I want over to my local liquor shop yesterday with a friend to pick up a new bottle of monkey shoulder because it's a good blend that's why. next to it they had a compass box great king street for $25. figuring for that price it was worth grabbing me and my friend both got a bottle of it and went up to the register to pay. after ringing us up the cashier asked if we wanted it in a bag and my friend responded with no just leave it in the bottle
hahahahah. your friend is awesome. On a side note, that Great King Street is lovely. The "Artist blend" variation of it is good too. Slightly friendlier.

I just found the Allardice near my (finally)... I tried adding some Quinta Ruban but I actually liked the Allardice on its own better than the "poor man's" blend of Mcallan M

I will always love experiments and alchemy in the service of finding cheap and accessible versions of super rare, expensive whiskeys. Thanks to a friend I recently got to try some high end ($120+) whiskeys, and thankfully for my bank balance I wasn't overwhelmed with any of them enough to be tempted to justify the price tags. But the curiosity of just how good the Pappys of the world really are will always be there

So you guys got me into blending whiskeys, and I found that Aberlour 12 double wood and Buffalo Trace (at about a 4:1 ratio) resolves quite nicely in a way I wouldn't expect.

GunnySGT1911, i'm totally in for a guest from the community pouring the whiskey. The only issue is shooting time. It's completely random, and we usually don't know we're going to shoot until about 30minutes before the cameras turn on.

If it wasn't for your show, I probably would have never had the urge to try Single Malt scotch, for which I have had my first tasting of this past weekend at a cigar bar (A Dalmore 12 in fact, which is around $70 a bottle in my area). And I love it! So damn you guys for making a broke college student's dreams come true and crushed at the same time! So cheers and keep making the show that we all love!

I found a bottle of the glendronach 21 and I’m trying to find the 18. My question is how much of a difference is there between the two?
Hello gentleman. As my whiskey addiction (I mean affection) grows, I decided that I needed to experience something a little meaner. Most of my selections up to this point have been within the ‘friendly’ category (Glenfiddich 15, Monkey Shoulder, Macallan, Glenlivet 12, Greenspot, various bourbons, etc). You guys have talked quite a bit about peat and how interesting it is. I decided to go all in and just pick up a bottle of Laphroaig 10. It was relatively cheaper than the other types of peated whiskey at the shop. I will never forget hearing the cork pop and immediately getting hit with the aroma. It was brutally violent but oddly beautiful. I poured myself a dram and just sat with it for around five minutes. I kept bringing it up to my nose trying to pick apart what I could. There was so much going on, it was a sensory overload! After taking that first sip I knew the only mistake I made, was waiting so long to try it. I loved every bit of it! Campfire, seaweed, that lingering finish… It was absolutely amazing. My whiskey life will never be the same!! Thanks for putting out this great content every day and subtly giving your viewers a nudge to experience things they may not have considered.
Daniel Bileci if you want a "mean" whisky, not many are meaner than Stagg Jr. It's barrel proof uncut, unfiltered, and really aggressive.

You got a lot of bottles stacked up in the background. After opening one, how long after should you finish it off so that you don't lose any flavor in the last pour? I heard about six months. Can you really taste the difference? This is giving me a good excuse to finish off my current stock :)
If it's mostly full, you have years if it's properly sealed. If it's under halfway you have 6-8 months. If it's mostly empty if you have months.

I got a bottle of Aberlour 17 cask strength special edition at the distillery. Should I open it? I fear I may never be able to get another one.
My rule is always open it. I do that first the moment I get a whisky so I'm not tempted to sit on it.
Whisky is for drinking. The memories created drinking it will last longer than the magic of opening it.
My biggest recommendation is to create a special circumstance that requires the opening of the bottle in small increments. For example, we have a small wedding chapel on the property, and I have a rule to always share the bottle of 25yr Bunnahabhain I have with anyone who has been involved in a wedding ceremony at the chapel. It's lasted a full year, and the memories are amazing.
Whiskey Vault I agree. I just needed that friendly push. I like that you brought up bunnahabin. Are their older whiskeys peated? Or more complex? I find the 12 (the only one I have had) to be a bit less than exiting.

Gledronach 18 Allardice vs Glendronach 16 Platinum, which is better?
Been shopping today and bought a GlenDronach 12 and a Tullibardine Sauterne Finish. I am not sure about the latter. It's really whitewine heavy in it's taste and has a really aggressive mouthfeel. Has no age statement so it has to be real young to be so alcohol heavy in taste.
You guys know where this is going? Review the Tullibardine 225 please!

You should really check out Arbelour A'bunadh! It'a sherry whisky, but very smooth and complex, even though it's cheaper and stronger than Allerdice (around 60%). And Clynelish raw cask, sherry not bourbon butt

$86?? Geez, I wish... 3 years later, good luck finding GlenDronach 18 for anything under $150.. That being said, I'd say it's still worth it. One of the finest bottles of Scotch in my collection, and that's coming from a peat-head.

Yeah, go for the heavy sherry cask whisky. Macallan or glendronach. Or head to irish and get green spot or jameson cask mates.

Ok ace. My first ever bourbon was rock town Arkansas whiskey. It was a sample from the drinks by the dram people. I searched on here and couldn't see it. Wonder if you've thought about doing it? I did definitely Taste some cooling mint. Was shocked as that's something I thought I'd never get in whiskey but that's bourbon for you and was during my first entry into the world of whisk(e)y. This was really a great show.
But one thing about the water. I think that after distillation next to nothing of the water used in mashing the grain remains in the whisky. Especially minerals should be left behind. Much more influence has the water used in the bottling plant when the strength is reduced to drinking levels. But i heard the the water used here is either filtered or even demineralized to avoid changing the taste of the product. Are there distillers who use the same water for the whole process?
The water you use in the mash has a huge affect on the outcome. And it's a very common thing for distillers in the US to use the same water source from beginning to end.
The other thing that Scotland and Kentucky have in common is a high mineral content water source (Limestone mostly) as the basis for the whisky. It definitely improves the whole process from mash and distilling to aging.
I’ve tried many many different whiskey brands at many price ranges. Macallan M is unmatched in my opinion. But there definitely are brands/bottles that can come somewhat close.

Today the Glendronach 18 costs around $160 USD. What really makes it special is that the distillery was shut down for 5 years when it was distilled. When the distillery reopened they had to market the whiskey as 18 instead of 23 because of those 5 years they were closed. So any 18 yr old Gelndronach you buy today is actually 23 yr.
Plus it's tasty as hell. A lot of nice spice - sage, thyme, orange, Christmas cake, musty notes - a beautiful whisky

My findings are as follows;
The Yamazaki 12 is a great whisky.
The Longmorn 15 is orgasmic.
I shall me sending my paper out for peer review, expect to see it published in a whisky review magazine or something later in the year.
I was trying out Bulliet Bourbon as I watched today's show. I was picking up toffee/butterscotch sweetness, some spice/pepper notes, hint of cinnamon, some woodiness, and something I couldn't put my finger on. Then suddenly in the video you said "walnuts," and that indistinct flavor became black walnut. The darn thing is, I'm sure it wasn't black walnut until I heard you say it. But now I can't get it out of my head. I have to try it again later. Good example of priming.
GunnySGT1911 I had a similar experience here at work as I was tasting a particular rare bourbon. There was something I couldn't quite nail down and the flavor/aroma I was relating to was permanent marker. Then one of my colleagues was talking about it and he said acetone (nail polish remover) and then it clicked. I knew I was close but wasn't there until he said that and as soon as I heard that it all became clear.
First off. Tasting a bourbon at work....well played, sir, well played. lol The thing is, I wasn't tasting black walnut. It was something else completely. I was trying to identify it, but when I heard Daniel say, "walnut," it completely overwrote what I was experiencing to the point I could hardly taste anything else.
Its funny that you mentioned acetone. When I first smelled the Bulliet, was immediately transported back to my childhood, Halloween, 1978. I just put on my Spiderman costume and my nose was full of that fresh vinyl smell. It was a total flashback. I suspect it was the first concentrated ethanol vapors escaping from the glass that did it. After than I got vanilla, cinnamon and toffee on the nose. But that first smell..... The human brain is an amazing thing. Then add in amazing whiskey and anything can happen. Cheers!

It took me completely off my guard. I was totally unprepared for how powerful a sensation it created. It totally overwrote what I was tasting to the point I couldn't recall just what exactly it was. Now hours later, I tried it again and I'm left thinking something to do with thanksgiving/pumpkin pie.....until I thought about black walnut and completely over shadowed my experience again. Thanks a lot Daniel. lol I'll consider it a fair trade for how much I've learned from watching your videos.

So a few years back I was getting a tattoo from my buddy who's a talented artist and it was his 40th Birthday.
He knowing I was a scotch fan told me about his birthday bottle, a Glenfarclas 40yr. I of course inquired to its quality and he happened to have it in shop and knowing I am a huge scotch fan offered a generous sample.
I exclaimed my delight for the malt and reverence for his generosity and asked if it was the "best" or "oldest" bottle in his collection to which he relied, "I don't think so." And continued to pull down a Dallas Dhu 1975 (32yr) old malt cask bottling, a 30yr Jura and an Old Pulteney 30yr.

Another item you forgot to mention that increases cost are tariffs. Especially now that they put a high tariff on whiskey.
Episode idea number 2 - If you guys were to be stranded on a desert island 'castaway' style with a Wilson soccer ball and only one bottle of whisky from the vault, which would it be.
That sounds terrifying.
I imagine at first you both pick the bottle you each would personally take to a desrt island, and then you have to find a compromise that you both like. Desert Island Whisk(e)y's.
I bought Hudson baby bourbon the other day that is a perfect sit relax and not think whiskey oh and does anyone else think we should come up with a song for when Daniel brings out the step stool something like stairway to heaven or the main theme to the hobbit

Regarding your "favor to the distillery" comment, from what I have heard and read, distilleries have to purchase their own products from a distributor like everybody else. They don't simply send a case to the gift shop instead of putting it on a truck.
