Some Fishermen are Jerks! The Unwritten Rules of Fishing (Level 1)

  • We all know that some fishermen are jerks, so here are the unwritten rules of fishing (level1). Has a fisherman ever come over and fished right in your spot while you are still there? This behavior is a very poor attempt at flexing. A lot of people, including myself, go fishing for more reasons than just catching fish. I really enjoy my time away from the annoying people in life. When someone comes from a mile away just to be in your way, I call that annoying. These people are like line jumpers, shrugging while they arrive late and cut in front of you. If you want to be considered a good fisherman by Realistic Fishing, respect other sportsmen and don't be a jerk.

When I'm in my boat, I steer clear of bank fishermen.
I have the whole lake. All they have is that little piece of shoreline.
I also avoid docks that have people on them. They need their privacy.

I used to live lakefront on a mostly private lake. I worked 10 to 12hrs a day plus a 3 hr drive 5 or 6 days a week as a restaurant manager. I dealt with hundreds n hundreds of ppl daily! I would take 20 min or so when I got home to sit on the dock just relax n cast out a pole or 2! N I can't tell u how many times some jack ass in a boat would come do this same thing n actually try to cast at my dock that I was sitting n fishing on! I would cast directly over their boat n say "Oh I'm sorry I thought u were a figment of my imagination because a real person couldn't possibly be that big of a rude duechebag!" Lmao

My boss lets me fish on his dock anytime. I usually go at night since there’s much less boat traffic. His dock is very well lit by 3 big halogens on the boat lift jet ski lifts and the center of the dock. Everyone that owns a dock there has big green dock lights. These lights attract fish... and people on boats. I usually have a Bluetooth speaker cranking and with all the lights I’m pretty obvious standing on the dock. Tons of docks empty and they still roll up and crowd me. It’s amazing.
I just start a conversation with them and try to irritate the crap out of them by asking nonstop questions until they leave. “Hi fellas. Any luck? Whatcha fishing for. What kinda gear you throwing? Mighty nice boat can I ride with ya? Blah blah blah” if that doesn’t work I’ll change the music to something horrendous and sing really loud

    • @dylant4737
      @dylant4737 4 роки тому +1

Ger Lor EXACTLY! Being in a boat gives you 99% access to ALL the fishing spots, but a shore fisherman may only have x amount of places to fish, whether the water’s too shallow, too much trees and vegetation, a steep drop off cliff etc. That boat guy could fish all of those spots, so maybe stick to more deserted areas and leave popular bank spots alone.

This year has been the absolute worst for this behavior. My daughter and I were kayak fishing together and we were reeling in bass and a guy with a ranger bass boat came over and hit my kayak and started fishing over top of me.. I flipped.. I had 4 other occurrences this year with people crowding on a wide open lake. And one boat launch encounter. We are all out there to enjoy the day and introduce young kids to fishing, but yet there are those that want to discourage future anglers. I have fished for decades but this year has left my head spinning.

Being a bank angler, I perfectly understand the feeling man! I might be tempted to switch to a heavy jig and swing it close. I usually have heavy line too, so, is easy to break some interfering lines. When I get to a spot that is occupied, since sometimes there is not any other accessible area open nearr by, I always ask if they mind me casting close to them if they say no problem, I´ll go as far as I can from their spot and never cast in the direction they are casting. If I'm with my kid, I always tell him to cast in the other direction too. If they say they need some space, well, they got firsts, so I have to move and sometimes it sucks but is the right thing to do. Unfortunately, there are some world class jerks everywhere. Tight lines man!

I deal with that sh!t almost everyday here. I've had my lines caught by boats trolling 10 feet away from me. I moved and switched to a catfishing rod with 3 ounces of lead and they got close to me again! So I reeled in once more and walked 30 or so feet further away and they did it again, so I launched that 3 ounces of lead through the side of their boat, reeled in and left.

When I started this video all I could think of was how I'd tie on a cheap hook and big sinker and purposely cast out and snag his boat to make him get the hint and possibly have a mess he has to untangle from his boat. Then you went and did the thing haha. You were a bit more subtle than I would have been. It's 1 thing if it's a constricted area and people are a bit more bunched together, but in this case there was literally an ENTIRE lake and he was the one who 1.) could go anywhere, 2.) wasn't there first. He's completely in the wrong and this video shows how oblivious he truly is. If he acts this way out on a lake imagine how many other things in life he does to mess with people. Ugh.

Agreed. I'm only 30, but I've realized I would rather make an example out of people, rather than smack talk.
Was taught very early age when fishing you don't crowd people, you don't cross people's lines, basic etiquette.
This group of people showed up to the tailwaters where I was fishing once. Mom, dad, 3 or 4 kids, grandma, grandpa, 4 or 5 in the early 20s. Grandma casted right where I had my line in the water for catfish. I literally left it there, watching it, just to see if she would say 'sorry' or 'I crossed your line' or something like that. Instead, she waited, then jerked her rod like she got this big bite and started reeling, knowing full well it was just my bottom rig. I went over grabbed my rod, let a bunch of drag out and put it in a Y of a small tree nearby. Watched her struggle with it, until she decided to cut her line. Meanwhile, I was fuming mad...but kept silent. Walked up to the dam, they call "the tank", it has guard rails, sidewalks where the water is let out of lake into river, etc. Some guy was bow fishing, see him there all the time. Hollered asked him if I could have the carp he was bow fishing, he gave me silent 'alright' acknowledgement. Brought them over to me in a bucket, these people who had crowded me...you'd think they thought someone gave me gold. I ended up giving them fish to that family, but I just had to make em squirm a little inside.
    I'm a terrible human being 😅.

Old Northwest trick when guys crowd you from below while salmon fishing on anchor. Buy some day old bread and start tearing chunks and throwing them in the drink.
Within no time the guy below you will have his boat being swarmed by seagulls going for the bread. Its right out of the movie "The Birds." 😂 I've watched two different "old timers" use the bread trick to great effect!

I've had people cast right directly over me and get lines crossed. Hate it when people just barge in.
However a few months ago I had this woman come with her children, and she courteously asked me if they could fish there too, to which I said absolutely. She was respectful and that respect deserved to he honored so I had no problems with them fishing there with me. I even strung a few lines up baited a few hooks, straightedge a backlash or two, and unhooked a couple fish for the kids as well.
It was a very pleasant experience.

I've been teaching my mom how to fish this year and I'm always going over the "unwritten rules". #1 for me is respect someones space, both on land and in the water. I had a really good day a month or two ago, catching them every few minutes on senkos in the same spot. Some kid asked "any luck?" and I told him and showed him what I was using. A few minutes later he's exactly where I am. On my left side, on my right, casting where I was casting. Just gets annoying when you spend hours on a lake, circling the entire thing, trying to find the bass and figure what they want that day, then you finally get it right and someone comes in and tries taking over your spot as soon as they get there.

I have a feeling that if you had confronted him, he would have said he was headed there anyway, and he's known about that very honey hole for 45 years. He discovered it originally, and has every right to be there, even if he fouls your line, causes you to lose lures and bait, wastes your time and patience, or even steals your fish. Been where you were more than a few times. Boaters that cruise up on the land-locked bank fisherfolk are on par with fellow bank fisherfolk that set up and crank up their music and attempt to create a party. Fish don't party! Fish leave the scene!
Manners (or lack of) are a major indicator of a person's general character. I use the words "please" and "thank you" in nearly every business transaction I make, be it selling a job or buying a pack of smokes. It is effortless to gain respect from a total stranger by simply offering respect up front... Simple manners work everywhere.
I'd expand upon this but I've had my say in your space. See how that works! LOL!

I feel you 100%. I fish from a kayak and seems that most guys in bass boats think its ok to cut me off and jump in front of me on the strech of bank im working and then have the nerve to wave and ask if im catching any.

I have no respect for fishermen that avoid shore fishermen's spots!!! Boats have the entire lake to fish, shore fishermen usually only have one or two spots to fish! Absolutely disgusting! I wouldve dropped a 3 ounce sinker with a huge treble hook into his boat!

You never, ever pull up on a guy bank fishing if you are in a boat! What the hell is wrong with some people! These are the same people that will blow through your fishing hole full throttle and just stare at you. Makes me wanna follow them and be an azzhole right back, but I don't. I know my temper will get the best of me and IT WILL escalate and turn into a bad day.

Not just people in boats. It happens to me way too often when bank fishing and other fishermen park themselves right next to me when there is miles of open coast. Not only are they encroaching on your spot that you have been fishing for a while, but there is chance of crossing lines and losing baits. Fishing etiquette is to distance yourself from other fishermen to not interfere with each other's fishing.

This kinda happened to me recently while I was trying to make the most of a holiday (day off from work and school) and take my young daughters and wife fishing. Some jerk pulled his boat up within casting distance of where we were fishing, cranked up some loud music and several people jumped into the water to swim and splash right above my daughter's bait. The thing that really gets me in these situations is that the person on the boat has complete access to the entire lake; whereas the person on shore is stuck to what they can reach from the shoreline - and often trees, logs, whatever limit them even more. So why does the person in the boat have to push me out of my limited spot?

I came up on a bridge a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to crappie fish. There were 2 other boats, I asked if I could join. They didn’t care...I caught one 2lb crappie then I felt bad and left. Went 100 yards away and caught a 4lb bass. I just put my crappie pole up, and went back to bass fishing.

Sup Alex. Agree 1000%. Glad you casted in his boat. I've done that many times, sometimes just with a weight. Some catch on and some cut line lol. That's why I often ask are there boating regulations about that? 😤

I was bank fishing and caught a catfish and this kid saw it and came over to talk my ear off about fishing. (which is fine) But he set up a bottom rig directly to the right of me then walked directly to the left of me and started casting a chatter-bait, essentially boxing me in. He was just a kid so I didn't say anything.

I feel your pain brother. I bank fish on a river, boats have the whole dang river yet will pull up and fish 30 yds.' from you. Your right , they are truly oblivious or just an a$$. You handled it perfectly. The boat was the catch of the day!

If I’m fishing on the bank I fish anywhere I can cast to. If you enter that area... I’m going to cast into your boat. If your troll past me I’m going to cast over your line and take your gear. You have the whole lake in a boat. You wouldn’t walk up and stand next to someone already fishing, so leave me to my 50’ half circle ffs 🙄

I think I had the worst encounter with a boat while I was fishing last week. I went fishing at my favorite spot I casted both of my rods, put them in makeshift rod holders (that were just holes in the ground), sat back, and relaxed. Five minutes later, four jackasses on an inflatable raft with a motor attached to it drove super close to the shore purposely, ultimately snagging my lines and taking my rods with them. I was so pissed off I tried to throw bricks, and anything I could pick up at the shitbirds but missed, those rods cost over 200 dollars I seriously hope they sink for that shit!

Love your shirt, and yes I agree with you. You should have cast your line in to his boat until he left the area. I fish from a boat and any time I come across someone fishing form shore I make sure I am far enough away that I can not cast into the area that they are fishing because I can fish a lot more area than they can because "I AM IN A BOAT". So I show all the respect that I can. I WILL NOW SUBSCRIBE TO YOUR CHANNEL. "I feel your pain brother, I would be so pissed off and I would not have been as calm as you.

the worst are the rental boats at my fishing spot . ill be fishing a cove ,and one of the pontoons will come blasting in full speed ,stop withing casting distance , then proceed to all jump in the water and start splashing around.had one while i was at the marina run into my motor with the pontoon . looked at me shrugged and took off . i said something to one of the marina employees and they were like we are not responsible

I've had my share of people. I once had a spot where it was clear water and started to fish. A man came by and went through the water to get on a rock close to the middle of the spot. He jumps off the rock creating a big splash scaring the bass I was after. He has the nerve to say "I'm pushing the fish towards you." All while looking at me and telling his son behind it was okay to jump. I lost it. In front of his family I told him "Learn some respect f*****g a**hole." I grabbed my gear and left.

I'm so glad you hooked his boat. Honestly I would've probably added more weight before I cast at him but I laughed so hard when you said "my bad" that was awesome. I hate people like that especially on a boat. Bank fishing is limited so boats should leave guys that bank fish alone no questions ask
