    These things are just modern higher capacity versions of UPS's (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) that we've had for PCs for three decades. They used to work with lead-acid batteries (so were very heavy), but now they're being updated with Li-Ion, which makes them a lot lighter/portable.

    It's a self contained inverter not a generator and way too expensive $1400 is way out of reach for most people.

      It might be worth it because it's true sine wave.... Decent true sine inverters cost just as much as this thing. Plus it comes with a battery and charger. Most cheap inverters are square wave or modified sine and they won't run many modern electronics

    • @boxjoint
      @boxjoint 4 роки тому

      Way to expensive for the regular Joe or Jane carpenter. Plus, $1400 for 1.5 hours of full constant power is unrealistic! No one would run a heater for 1.5 hours with that thing. Maybe you should have tried the circular saw cutting wood and figured out how long it would have lasted with the strain and surge of starting the saw motor every 30-45 seconds. I bet it wouldn’t have lasted half the time at most. Maybe if it lasted 8 hours on a job site with multiple users and multiple tools. Portable battery technology isn’t there yet.

      If it’s chargeable via solar then it’s a generator. It does generate electricity when you add solar panels. They have ones that aren’t solar power capable and those are just batteries. It’s like a regular generator. You need gas, oil, spark plugs for it to work. These just need panels.

    • @originalname9999
      @originalname9999 4 роки тому +1

    I don't know why they call it a generator when all it is, is a battery bank and inverter. It doesn't generate electricity - it just stores it and then converts it to AC. If tied to solar panels, it should last longer. I wonder if there is a solar charge controller in there ... MPPT?

    Most of the comments are spot on. As others have noted - Not a "generator" at all, but rather a battery 'power bank'. Most likely it has Lithium batteries inside (lightweight and high power density) - but the sort of rapid charging you demonstrated might not bode well for longevity. And as we all know by now LI bats have a nasty tendency to burst into intense flames when they go 'bad' - which rapid charging might increase the probability of. Much would depend on the electronic controller used in the product - which undoubtedly involves a microprocessor, firmware and code. And of course, if the microprocessor goes out, you're SOL and your $1400 unit is 'bricked'.

    Love your channel and learning heaps. Thanks! You probably already know but all it really does is rectify the mains and store the power as DC (probably 18650s). A boost converter ups the voltage to mains level and then it just switches the polarity going out at 60Hz. Mosfets switch the battery polarity 60 times a second and then it makes it into a pretty sine wave. They are pretty good. Lithium cells are only good for about 500 cycles though. A 240 Watt hour powered my TV and Firestick for just over and hour. Don't go below 20% charge or it can damage the cells.Storing lithium cells at above 40-60% long term doesnt do them any good either - the internal resistance goes up because tendrils form internally and coat the anode and cathode in the cells and limit conductivity. I think an engine based generator would be more dependable / repairable in a SHTF situation.

    I’d say if you had a 1500 watt draw for 1hr 26mins before the battery went dead that’s pretty impressive- and the saw test was the kicker. It couldn’t start the compressor but like you said even a gas powered generator couldn’t do it. The price is a bit steep but you have to figure in no fuel/oil and maintenance costs that go with a gas generator. I’d definitely give strong consideration to buying one. Very good review, thanks.

In that context, it has benefit that may be worth the price and a buyer that could afford it. The family camping version will be down the road after the cost comes down.

    No carbon monoxide emission so you can use it indoors. No noise, so a campground with “ no generators after x: PM “ has no problems. Pricey, yes, but convenient for short term use.

    how much power did it consume while doing the 0...100 percent re-charge?
    So, you need 'house power' and the best usage/recharge ratio is slightly less than 50 percent.
    how many recharge cycles is it good for?
    how long does it hold its' charge when not in use?
    what is its' percent efficiency between charging power and usage power

      To be fair most lithium-ion battery tech is over 95% charge-discharge efficient so you get back almost all the energy you put in. Most good inverters are also over 95% so I would be very surprised if the whole thing was worse than 80% efficient. However, calling it a generator is a huge stretch. It is a backup power supply. Those were available for ages for anyone who doesn't want to put together some batteries an inverter and a charger. There is one good thing about this device however, most 1800w inverters will trip the breaker if you attach a 1500w motor because motors take many times their rated load in the first second they are started. This device seems to handle this fine.

    Hi Steve. As good as that device may be, it is only a glorified UPS (uninterrupted power supply) which have been around nearly as long as computers have. Cheers.

    So some questions that I did not see immediately answered on their website. First, how long are the batteries expected to last? How many cycles? And second, once the batteries have reached end of life are they user replaceable? Or do you need to recycle the entire unit and buy another one? Lastly, I think they should have an extended runtime battery add-on.

    Steve that is the furthest thing from a generator it's simply a uninterrupted power supply. That might be something that I would maybe hook up to my computer maybe but let's face it if you have a power outage at your house and it's going to last for a couple of days and you need your refrigerator to stay cool to your deep freeze and maybe even watch some TV it would fall very very short that's why I have a I think it's like a 8555 generator. Of course it uses gasoline and I mentioned the previous video I only put real gas in it. I think I'd rate that thing about two beers. It maybe something cool to carry down beside the lake while you're fishing at night so you could put on some music maybe and have an LED light so you can watch your reels then be able to take fish off your hook or put bait on. But I don't think I would spend $1,400 for one to do that. I think I continue doing like I do and run a couple of extension cords down to the side of the lake. I guess it's nice being within 70 ft of the water! Not much of a like about 12 acres but it holds some pretty good catfish, bass and bream. Keep up the good work dude I thank you for your videos until you're better paid!

    BIG TESTS ... I would be curious to see if it would be possible to power a 120 volt mig welder and if so how long and up to what amperage it could withstand.
    Other things; the life time (in years) of this generator to give 100% power compared to a gasoline generator. Everyone knows that batteries lose their capacity over time. (loaded and unloaded).
    Thank you for this test Steve

  • @seanh6578

    I don't understand how it can be called a generator! It's a battery pack, and as a large capacity portable battery pack it seem pretty cool for what it is. But When the power goes out, I plug in the generator to the house, put fuel in it, and run the generator until power comes back on.
    This is just a pretty cool battery pack. Just an honest assessment of what it is..
