  • In today's video, Paul Drew and James Ivey from The Studio Rats take a look at the Texas Twang from Pedal Pawn.
This pedal is supposed to give you the classic Stevie Ray Vaughn tone. Does it live up to the hype?
Here is what Pedal Pawn say about the Texas Twang.
It’s been a lifelong journey to encapsulate our favourite Texan’s ‘Twang’ into a box! Alongside our countless hours of tweaking, we have received an outpouring of requests for this very creation! We listened to you, ourselves, (& Stevie on repeat for 20 years) & can now proudly present the - Pedal Pawn ® Texan Twang ™.
This custom boost circuit is specifically tuned for an abundance of glassy clean-up, for when you roll back the guitars volume knob on each setting. Rolling up the guitars volume knob produces the Texan Twang ™ we have searched for our whole lives!
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I think Stevie's tone was far less overdriven than we all imagine.

You’re right he also had a chorus running to thicken his sound

@@jhate666 I've never seen a chorus on his pedal board , but he did use a Leslie speaker sometimes so I guess it's that 👍

@@Dad-Gadpost prod chorus effect only on recordings... some songs used a lesley which is more noticeable. The chorus is super sutble

It’s funny how he mentions Eric Johnson with SRV just because they’re both Texans- their tones couldn’t be further apart!

Having played through this, and seeing the demos/reviews, it does nothing a TS9 and a cranked Fender tube amp won't. I don't understand the constant desire to try and achive a tone, at a low volume, which is unachievable at said volume?

With Sony Pro studio headphones on, the 'mid' really sounds like SRV. I think that "digging in" is an essential part of SRV's playing and would like to have seen Paul push those strings harder, with that mid sound. Nice pedal!

I wonder why pedals such as this, with an apparent sweet spot when the guitar volume is turned down, don't have a switch to cut the level of the input to simulate the guitar volume being turned down. Maybe even have a Strat knob on the pedal - the signal goes through the pretend guitar volume control when the switch engaged, and not when the switch is off. The obvious workaround is to use the guitar volume as intended, of course.

Well, the Volume and Tone knobs on a guitar were always meant to be used, not left at a constant 10. The full potential of an electric guitar can only be realised when this fact is taken into account.

I used to have a bit of a compulsion to ‘acquire’ SRV tones, via modeling and/or pedals. Then I woke up and recognized I can’t and will never be able to play like that. This thing, though-does seem to get that character. For those with the skills. I may have to get one of these to do the things I usually want from a Tube Screamer.

i felt like you could have spent some time on the mid with rolling guitar volume back. the high might work for dull amps, like mine can be at times. There's some mojo in that pedal that one day i hope to buy. and i don't play SRV, but i love the tone. Your SRV playing was impressive enough to me.

Interesting pedal but I prefer my Vertex SSS SRV pedal. Offers more useable tones imho. From Robben Ford and John Meyer to Stevie. I have it last in my chain and it’s on most of the time. I liked the mid setting on this demo. Maybe the high would be good in a full band context?

I hear "Lone Star" and I think of the Cardiff rock band from the 70s ...
    My generation I guess. 🙄
I'm glad you said "Fuzz Face". 👍
It sounded to my ear like a circuit with some FF action going on in there.
Like some Face + Boost kinda sorta thing.

Stevie’s sound embodied thousands of gigs starting in his early teens, extremely strong hands and an almost fundamentalist devotion to blues and the people who influenced him. Even if you fit the bill; good luck finding a venue that will let you dime at least (2) 115 or 410 loaded amps. His influence and mastery can’t be overlooked; making people feel the way he did doing your own thing doesn’t come with free shipping at a premium price point.

When I moved to Austin in 1985 and to this day, older Austin guitar players are much bigger fans of Jimmie than Stevie. I didn’t make a lot of friends telling them they’re crazy.
