Please note while I do my best, mistakes sometimes happen, but the intent and fun of the game remains intact. My main goal is to show and highlight the basics of game play. I've played Strat-o-matic hockey for almost 30 years. There's a lot of rule modifications, but it's really, really fun if you enjoy face-to-face competitive games with a buddy.
@Forever Board I've looked at hockey, so far only pulled the trigger on baseball in addition to football. :)
This gotta be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I never knew they made a football board game that’s so advance. Makes you feel like a coach. Definitely gonna look into getting this

This was a great video! I’m mostly, well all, APBA, though I have tried Strat baseball. I watched a half dozen videos on APBA football, and they just made me think it was unplayable. Your video was so clear, makes me think the game is playable and still able to be adapted for individual changes. Well done!
Great to see a How to Play for Strat-O-Matic Football. I really enjoy SoM Baseball an picked up the 1987 and 1991 seasons a few years ago. It's a great game. I might have to pick this one up. Thanks!

Super helpful, thank you! I have a fairly strong collection of SOM cards and appreciate their approach despite having chosen APBA first and sticking with it to this day. APBA Football originally had the solo player roll a single die to determine defensive line setting, and I'm planning to return to that method for some basic-level demos and projects, but adjusting the meanings of the 1 to 6 roll situationally. For instance, vs. a first-and-10 early in the game, I might make the die 1 a pass defense (light D line), 6 a run defense (heavy line) and 2-5 standard defense (which should be used the bulk of the time, in my view). On a third-and-six, I might make it pass defense on 1-2, standard 3-5 run/ground/heavy line 6 (sometimes works to load that line up in a passing situation - adds to a sack loss if you get lucky in that regard).

Cool looking game! When I glanced at the thumbnail I thought it was electric football for a minute there lol, looks fun, I was wondering if you ever got a chance to pick up that new Horrified American Monsters, I played the original with some friends kinda lite but it was fun

are those two separate boards to set your defense what the game comes with now? when I bought the 2014 set it still had the original game board from the 70s (one piece with yard marker and time on it). what does it give you now for time and field position then?
gee... where did you get the idea to use those marvel champions dials to keep score... hum.. whoever thought of that was a genius for sure.... nice to see this playthrough Dale... I will email you today about our get together...
@idjester Before the Marvel Champions dials, I used LOTR dials. But I think we are both still geniuses. ;)
I'm confused. When do you go with four dice? When do you go to the white rulebook chart?
New to the Football Game after 43 years of Collecting/playing SOM Baseball.
Question- Does this 'new version' of the game work with the 'old' "Big Cards" beyond the no having the 'Super Advanced' gaming feature on those older style cards?
Do the charts and rules, etc work with both kinds of card sets?
OR do you need an old game to play the "Big Cards" cards, and a 'Newer" game to play the 1972 and 2020's teams sets....? Thank you

What is the 1970 etc seasons? Are these cards? or digital "cards" ?
When I played Paydirt Solo I took out the short yardage run defenses for the other team in certain scenarios. I mean a team isn`t going to play short yardage defense late in a ball game and the other team is facing a 3rd down and 11 yards to go and is down by 10 points. I assume you do that some how also in this game..
Thanks for watching! That sounds like a good ruling once you've got the basics down. Many people have made up their own chart to use in special situations.

How can penalties be included in the basic football game?
How is it determined by the red die that the defense guess right or wrong?
1, 2, 3 - guessed wrong
4,5,6 - guessed right
Unlike strat baseball , hard to play advanced or super advanced in the football game if solitaire.
@peter tort I haven't played advanced in either, but from reading rules, I'd totally agree with you there. :)
Do you play a lot of simulations in Strat? I've seen some videos of people doing them which I really enjoy, but everytime I do one myself, all games come out ridiculously low-scoring. Almost feels like I'm doing something wrong.
@Tim Vergoossen I haven't, but with dice rolls, I can see extremely low scores or really high scores. Work on that D. ;)
Touchbacks go to the 25, not the 20...unless you're playing a version prior to 2018.

@Rock Hammer Thanks for watching! Adding a couple items from the advanced rules will start working the clock more. Also using time-outs, 2 minute office, etc. So definitely more clock management as rules are explored. And a neat thing about the game, once you leave basic, you can play with some advanced rules, so you don't need to learn them all at once. :)
When are there penalties in the basic game?
Penalties are an advanced item that can be added in with another die to roll. :)

Isn't this just an elaborate "rock, paper, scissors" game? And even less strategy/skill required when you throw randomness of the dice into the mix?
Strat gets way more statistically accurate when you get into the advanced/super advanced modes.
The game is meant to be learned in stages so you learn basic, then advanced and so on. Most people I know that play progressed pretty quickly from basic to ADV, spend a season playing advanced and then go super advanced.
Try it. It’s awesome, I promise. I’ve been playing Strat-O-Matic for 19 years.
@@zaccaldwell5563 Thank you for the advice! I will have to try this with my wife since I can't get her to play Combat Commander or Napoleonics. My son tells me I might have a very old copy of Strat o Matic in my gaming collection but never took it out of the moving boxes since we moved 23 years ago. I only unpacked the ones my son wanted to play while he was still living here, and those were mostly eurogames. My wife is an absolute pro and college football maniac, I bet there's a card set I could purchase that would bring my old game into the most recent seasons. I thought about buying a Steam PC game for her to play called Pro Strategy Football I think? I never got an answer as to how she and I would play against each other one 1 computer though. Thanks again!
All the charts and memories. Painful old memories requiring a lie down. Strat - for people who think Warhammer is just too straightforward. The way to mitigate dice RNG is roll more dice and quality card stock is for cowards.
FYI Gronk can do every play on both sides of the ball because He Is Groot
