My friend and the guys that lived near him used to play. We were in high school and I was over one day and became hooked. It is a great way to past a day and just play. You can play by yourself which is cool. I live in the Midwest and the winter months are long and not much to do. I just will pick two teams and play a world series.

Strat-o-matic is ingrained in us old time players. Excellent way of explaining the game to new comers. Thanks a lot! The best replay baseball game ever.

Great video. I really enjoyed your commentary about playing the game in your youth. I grew up playing APBA and still enjoy it. I made the plunge into Strat in '09. I own more seasons in it than I do in APBA. I love it, the Basic game is still so good and I think the Adv game is a perfect cards and dice baseball game but I just love the simplicity of the basic game and have grown to prefer playing it. I think the value is so much better than some games bc you get 3 games in 1 box. The cost of the game fits for me as well. Thanks again⚾🎲🎲🎲🙂

Hoping to play more Strat in the future but without a comfortable gaming space, which I don't see changing, I just don't think I will play it much or maybe at all. I will say though that I thoroughly enjoyed the few games I have played with Strat cards and dice. It was easy to understand the rules. The play moved much quicker than it has when I have tried a few other games. As for the cards they are pretty cool but I am not as infatuated with them as others are. I think other games have much more interesting cards. Anyway eh to finish this post I will say I hope before it is all said and done I get a game rolled with my son and dad one day. Going to be hard to get both to do it but I would love to share the game with them and show that a great baseball game can be found outside of video games.

AL, you are a great game reviewer. This one brings back the memories. I'm trying hard to get my youngest son interested in tabletop baseball so I took your advice and got him a copy of Strat-O-Matic.

Great job. This is one of the best videos I've seen on the subject of dice baseball games. Started playing SOM in 1964.

Was an APBA guy as a kid and have about 15 season card sets of that. Bought Statis Pro Baseball in 1989, liked your review on that. Never touched Statis-Pro games but your review was excellent. I like the dice rolling mechanism you displayed. I'd probably be a Basic Gamer at first, looks simple to play. APBA Basic is really easy to play but your demo of Strat appears to have better random-ness where APBA is limited with single-column hitters cards and limited pitcher card grades in Basic mode. Might have to try this. Cheers!

I recently stumbled upon this video in my recommended videos, and I can't begin to tell you how much I was able to relate - though substituting APBA for Strat-o-Matic. The connection I had to that game as a youth is now being replayed 10 years after leaving my last job, as I recently discovered my source code to port APBA to the Mac in 1989 - an application I submitted as part of my resume when applying to QC in 1991 to "prove" I knew how to write Mac software. So, in a sense, I can thank APBA for my career as a Mac programmer. That source was on a long forgotten PowerBook 5300c in my garage and now - as a purely intellectual exercise - I'm porting that code to modern Macs with an update UI. Along the way, I've been reconnecting with the game board, cards and dice, and have amazed how everything about the game has come flooding back to my mind: memorized card results, esoteric rules, and the magic of mind as theater as results are generated during an active game. It's been a lot of fun! Anyhow, thanks Al for your spot on reflection of what these games have meant to us.

@@hands-on-games I actually did realize that, but had no idea you were involved with table gaming until I came across the video. The Eudora days were good, and jwn2 was the one who had reviewed my APBA port when I applied (with no prior professional Mac programming experience) in the fall of '91. Good times!

Great video... it’s Interesting that this game didn’t include Errors/fielding ratings as one would think it wouldn’t be too much to add to the game play. Every flyout/ground ball would have an additional D20 roll to account for possibility of error. this game has a lot of possibilities for “house rules” to add to the realism...

Great video, Al. I too have in the last year come home to SOM baseball. And upon consulting the rules for a couple of minutes for the purpose of getting my bearings, I was rolling a game. I even ran on old-timers tournament that very weekend. I am currently in the midst of a 1960 replay and loving it. Oh how I missed the stats. I have enjoyed your channel and just now subscribed. Keep up the good work.

Hi Al: I really enjoyed this video along with the one on the Downey Games quick play for the College B-Ball game. What I liked most was your passion for the SOM game but even more so for what playing board games can do for the kids in today's world! I wish, as you obviously do, that we need to get our kids involved in using their minds not just their thumbs. For me my game in Jr High was APBA. We had a bunch of friends who came over to my house and played out Tournaments and games with APBA. Like you I can put the APBA basic game on my table top and play again like I was 13 or 14 years old. Keep the reviews and your passion coming. Best, David N

    Great video.
One correction here - the remark about rolls off of the pitcher's card generally being advantageous to the pitching team and rolls off of the hitter's card generally being advantageous to the hitting team is not true. If a batter is above average, yes, rolling off of his card is advantageous to the hitting team. But if your batter is below average, then no, it is more advantageous for the hitting team to get their roll off of the pitcher's card.
In a league setting where the average hitter batted .270, let's say you have a batter who hit .240 and he's facing a pitcher who allowed a batting average of .290 - it is to the hitting team's advantage to get the 4, 5 or 6 column instead of the 1, 2 or 3.

Great review, Al, I am amazed you found this game in a toy store! My first sports board game was APBA, around age 8, then I discovered Dynasty League (then called Pursue the Pennant) around age 18. Then a few years ago I finally picked up Strat--O-Matic, and enjoyed it very much. I highly recommend one of the SOM hall of fame sets.

Used to love this game back in middle school. We'd have drafts combining multiple years of teams. So say you took Pete Rose for the 1977 season, he'd be off the board for all the other seasons as well. Man that was fun. And we always played the advanced version. Nada to the basic.
