  • I do a bit of deep dive in looking at Strat-O-Matic's recently reissued 1985 NFL Football cards. Many players and four defenses are featured (5 if you notice Atlanta's defensive cards at the start of the video).

12:21 he got injured that year. It was the beginning of the end for Danny. But, what a card!

25:08 cards are almost identical except for the QB cards. The flat pass yardage has been adjusted greatly

I know they've had a tendency to make changes to the cards in re-issues.

I had the original '85 set that was issued in the summer of 1986. I believe it was the last set that came already cut and it was also the last football set that was issued on the really thick black and white card stock.

The Bears were so good that SoM changed the rules for the Bears. They could blitz the linebackers while still covering 1 man in the flat and look in pass zones.

In my friend's replay of the 1985 season. I was able to beat the Bears with Atlanta ( pound the rock with Riggs)13-10, and Green Bay 28-7. Lynn Dickey was 21/27 for 279 yards, and Middleton ( i think?) had 100 yard game.. The key to beating the Bears is to call RUN almost EVERY PLAY. Make McMahon beat you. He usually would. My Rams gave the Bears a good game losing 30-27. Brock held on to the ball so long his O- line were all 0's. Eventually, the Bears lost in the SB to Miami 35-31. I wasn't coaching the Dolphins but obviously a game like that favors Miami.

I have the original 1980 season and several receivers had long gains on the flat pass.

Really? I didn't recall Strat having done that before.

@@sportsmanz5948 Sure. Stanley Morgan's 1980 card has 15 long gains, including 3 in Flat pass and 6 in short pass. That's an extreme example of course.

I hope you have as much fun running the 1985 Bears c&d that I had with the computer version. After finishing a perfect regular season, I was afraid to screw up in the playoffs. Lets just say I'm ready for the Super Bowl and scared that I'm going to have it be my first loss.

Something tells me they won't be quite that dominant in C&D Strat as in real life. But I'm eager to find out.

I replayed the ‘85 season cards and dice, every game, every team, several years ago
Niners beat the Bears in NFC Champ and Dolphins beat Pats in AFC.
Niners beat the Dolphins in SB
I have the box scores packed away somewhere. But, the key to beating the Bears is NOT turn the ball over, and throw short. The pass rush is a killer

@@mid_life_crisis13 The Dolphins probably SHOULD HAVE beaten New England. NE had a better defense, but that Dolphin air attack was unreal.

@@mid_life_crisis13And call RUN DEFENSE. Otherwise, Payton and Suhey ( and even McMahon will kill you on the ground)

1985 CHI Bears: "We are going to go undefeated and be the greatest football team in history!"
1985 Dan Marino and the MIA Dolphins: "Hold the champagne!"
I was at the rain soaked Orange Bowl for that game and it is still the greatest Dolphins game I ever saw!
    PHINS UP!!!

Good stuff SMZ, including your look over of the computer cards. My *stuff* is on the fed ex truck-hoping for mid week arrival. Until then, I'm relying on you & the other table top channel creators to get me thru... Thanks for all u do. And, uh, sorry about your Sox, thought they'd be way better...

Ahhhh, not so fast. No, I don't live in Chicago. Nor am I from Chicago. I just happen to be a fan of Chicago teams. My wife, however, IS originally from Chicago. But that's just a coincidence. A convenient one since it has allowed me to go see several White Sox games over the years.
