    Thank you, Chris! As always, a clear and concise explanation. I finally got one of my kids to play with me. We played the elementary game, and are ready to jump up to advanced.

      Probably my 5th time or so watching these vids! Lol. Currently trying to figure out why one would never show blitz with the FS. My understanding is that you must show it to be able to do the FS blitz, but there isn’t a negative result for showing it and then not doing it. At least not that I can find. I’m probably missing something though.

      @@bigrevkev55 From a set of rules I downloaded from SOM's site. A couple downsides to showing the blitz:
      SAFETY BLITZ
      The defense announces he is “showing blitz”. This is done at the same time he announces his formation,
      which is prior to the offense selecting its play. After the offense has selected its play, the defensive coach
      can move his free safety to the line of scrimmage (any open slot - not just the blitz slots) if the blitz is on, or
      to any zone on the field if it is not. In all cases, even if the safety does not blitz, if the + (aka “sniper
      scope”) reading occurs consider that a Long Gain.
      If the safety actually blitzes, a sack does not occur and the offense throws a long pass then always refer to
      the “LONG PASS - 0 MEN” column of the defensive card no matter how many defenders are positioned in
      the long pass zone.

      A lot of folks have asked for this. But I really do not see where this is solitaire friendly. Also, I have no one with which to learn to play advanced and higher. Elementary has always been more than enough for me. So, I am sorry to disappoint, but that is a video I won't be making.

    As a Practical matter these LB and safety movements add much complexity especially when adding 5th DBs or 3 Wide so I usually keep my FS in the Long Zone. I also automatically go to 5th DB whenever Offenses go the 3 WR - so that the extra DB covers the 3rd WR - that is my understanding of the 5th DB. I also avoid 4WR and 6DBs to keep it a little simpler when playing solitaire. For people with more brainpower than I my hat is off to you, maybe I will get there someday although I have improved by keeping my rules printout close at hand during my solitaire 1995 replay.

    To help you out on the linebacker coverage - I am referring to my best understanding of relatively recent rules that state that if a Linebacker who has coverage responsibilities is moved up to the Line of Scrimmage (run or Blitz space) then his man is considered Open. If the man is left open (because the coverage man is on the line of scrimmage, or is an outside linebacker moved to Look in zone, or is double teaming another player) for Flat or Look in Passes refer to WRONG column on the receiver card (even if otherwise correctly guessing pass) for readings of DEFENDER on short or long passes pass is completed automatically for stated yardage. That's a mouthful. As a practical matter I rarely throw LONG or SHORT to running backs mostly flat and I rarely position LB as double teaming in my solitaire play to keep it simple. So what this seems to imply is that when Linebackers move up to the Line of Scrimmage and you throw FLAT to the Running Backs and, RECEIVER reading comes up for them - the WRONG column is used when rolling for the receiver. There are also some other special rules when throwing FLAT/LOOK IN to vacated zones that add a little more complexity - I am not commenting on those. Also the above rule for LBs at line of scrimmage doe not apply when inside the 10 Yard Line because the LBs are automatically required to be at the Line of Scrimmage. This is my understanding from reading a copy of the rules I have - If someone has more recent rules or has any corrections to my understanding please post this so I can better understand.

      It's actually great in my opinion. I made my own for my 1978 season I am in the middle of. I bought plastic tiles, print out the player squares on a label sheet, cut and pasted them onto the tiles. Adds a little something to the game, IMO. And I havent noticed an increase in price, ordered my new cards last month .

    So I guess the blitz is only effective for a possible quarterback sack ? I am trying to grasp why I would want to blitz linebackers. If they get caught out of position you can get really burned as opposed to their benefit in a successful blitz. I get the safety blitz use and benefits and drawbacks better . I tend to think playing it safe with the linebackers in position is a safer way to go. Can someone explain there interpretation of the benefits of using the blitz.

    • @barrye5376
      @barrye5376 6 років тому +2

      Alot of the decision to blitz depends on the Offensive Line and Defensive Pass Rush ratings of the players involved. Blitzing always adds to the chance of a Sack - but if you are blitzing with weak pass rushers against a stellar O Line - its less effective for sacks - but having a LB in a zone where a run goes will bolster the run results on the Defensive card results. So essentially its like real football - the good thing is the offense without an audible does not know how many where and which LBs will be blitzing Cat and Mouse like real pro football.

    • @bigrevkev55
      @bigrevkev55 2 роки тому +1

      Yes, it bolsters the run D to have LBs blitzing. But also, in SADV, blitzing more LBs can also increase the pass rush rating of the player who is selected for the pass rush.

      Sorry, just noticed this was on the football video. Have had this for a while. But, yes, updated rules with charts that appear to be more applicable to football in the last 15 years. Older card sets, you will still want that old book handy fir the charts it includes and still use that big XChart as well.

    I have a question. If I am playing a standard 4-3 defense with no blitz and everyone in position what column do read on the defense advance card on runs. I think it's the 1LB column on runs. It is the best one for sure. I think the blitz is an act of desperation to make something happen. On every type play the 0 men 0LB,or 3 men on every play represents linebackers out of position on blitzes. You can get beaten badly. I just think playing straight up defense formations is safest. I'm new to the game and am trying to get going playing solitaire. It's a great game for sure. Please help in explaining the blitz more.

    • @ChristopherWalrath
      @ChristopherWalrath  6 років тому +2

      OK. Here is the scoop as I recall. I do not play advanced and have not messed with this since the video. That being said, you will notice that the run zones contain the blitz zones. Primarily, placing linebackers into the blitz zones bolster the run against the type of play where they are located. Pass rush situations occur based solely on the result of the black die. So, there may be no pass rush, so this means the defense is only 'showing' blitz unless the dice say otherwise.
      Yes, standard is safer. However, certain circumstances will dictate moving players around. Running situations would warrant moving LBs up to support the run more. If you have a 5/6 rated LB, send him and move your remaining pass defenders around to fill in what gaps you may.
      What do you need explaining next? Let her rip.

    • @TheTheoldmaster
      @TheTheoldmaster 6 років тому +1

      This pertains to the proper column to read on the advance defense. If the defense is in a 4-3 and all players are in their positions(no blitz) and an end run or any run for that matter is called , you roll a 4-6 on the dice and look at the defense card do you look at the 0LB column because no LB was placed in a blitz mode to support stopping the run. I think it is that way but need clarification. This seams to be the only area I am not quite sure on. The same can be applied to the proper column on a pass play with a standard basic 4-3 defense is it the( 0 men) for short pass and long pass also ?

    • @ChristopherWalrath
      @ChristopherWalrath  6 років тому

      Correct, the column you use depends on the number of players that are in the zone that the play is directed to. Example, move the LLB to the End Run blitz zone, if tge offense calls End Run Right, read +1LB.

    • @TheTheoldmaster
      @TheTheoldmaster 6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the help. I am playing solitaire and will develop a solitaire defense chart to cover down and distance. I can see where the placement of linebackers in the advance game determines the column to get results from when you roll 4-6 on the dice. You can't have a perfect defense for both run and pass at the same time. I will develop a hybrid game defensive solitaire chart to cover down and distance somewhat like the game Paydirt does. From short yardage to prevent can be covered to make the game utilize the offense and defense ratings of the teams. The game will be almost as quick as the elementary version. I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.
