Fareed forgets to mention that the Dutch "Golden Age" was enabled by colonial plunder and slavery over the course of centuries. As a Dutch person, I must insist that any analysis of Dutch wealth without any reference to colonialism in Indonesia, South Africa, Suriname, and the Antilles is woefully inadequate and deceptive.
It is not deceptive. Everybody knows about the colonialism of the Dutch and British but that doesn’t take away their engineering/industrial credits. I am from a country which was colonized by UK for hundreds of years. It was brutal in many cases, but at the same time the world we are living in shaped the industrial advancements made by the colonial powers.
Absolutely! His analogy for Mississippi with Britain is faulty too. Britain sucked the blood out of dozens of countries including South East Asia. Mississippi is dealing with racism from their own government.
I think he was referring to innovations in investment practices, which were based on Dutch land ownership norms (also sadly applied to colonialism) whereby 10 people would own 10% of 10 separate farms, so the individual risk of a farm not performing to any investor was a mere 10% (as opposed to a potential 100%). This long term, investment diversification strategy was applied to shipping and is still the basis of modern economics. It is even seen in countries with a mix of socialist and capitalist practices where the government owns shares in companies like China, Germany, and India but isn't always the sole shareholder.
“But you see, I had to spend that money to make more money. And this other thing lost money. Never mind that my net wealth keeps growing, how could I ever pay taxes? I have to keep spending my money to make more money!” Basically how rich taxes work. “Trickle down” is a very backwards descriptor, it bloats up.
I just did mine. It's become a payday loan for the non-rich. Capricious extortionate kaleidoscopic nightmare, I'd be ok with it if the super rich and corporations would pay fairshare.
I would add that women's rights movements have existed for over a century now and it never sparked a backlash like this. No, what's really going on is because a bunch of extremely rich, greedy elites (mostly Republicans) refuse to give up even a small portion of their wealth or power. So they manufacture fake grievances and created a culture war as a way to stay in power.
I can listen to Fakaria for hours if he can provide lectures on how the past has shaped the current world, especially those aforementioned revolutions.
The problem with tying economic indicators to the voting population is that the economic indicator formulas began systematically removing living expenses in favor of business expenses in the 1980s. Our individual well-being was basically severed from the national economy in favor of big business. It's why our wages never kept up with inflation. Inflation numbers only accurately reflect the inflation affecting businesses, not home owners, renters, workers or the disabled - you know, the voting population. Notice, the formulas for 'national inflation' no longer include the costs of housing, food, transportation, health care, insurance, CHILD CARE, or any of the other major expenses of working people.
Was thinking this too. That whole trickle down economy model is still applied but not effective. When’s the last time anyone got a cost of living increase?
How is it if the economy is not an indicator or evaluation factor for the success of an administration why is Trump desperately trying to take credit for it and selling this lie to his cult. If you ask any Trump cult follower why they’re voting for him one of the most frequent answer they give is that the economy was better under him even though it’s far from the truth or facts. It’s the lies and mind poisoning that Trump pushes at every single rally that has blinded these people thoroughly so much so they believe his lies to be true even though it’s far from the reality. It’s exactly what Hitler did to the Germans fear mongering and lies at every opportunity he got because he understood humans are vulnerable and most humans are basically robots that need to be told and controlled because they lack analytical and critical thinking powers. Trump has never read the Bible but he has learned and read Hitler’s Mein Kamp and he’s applying the same game to gain control at the expense of freedom and democracy.

I heard Mr. Zakaria interviewed about his new book on a couple of radio shows on National Public Radio (NPR). And quite frankly, the interviews were longer and better than here. His explanation about the "tribalism" in American politics is fascinating. He explains how Biden and the Democrats are campaigning on economic issues, and that is not moving the polling because the tRump GOP are highlighting (and setting fire to) so-called "cultural issues." This should have us worried. Gotta get his book.
Of course NPR had longer and better interviews with Zakaria on his new book. They are the best journalists out there: Colbert is merely the best talk show host.
Actually, the fact that the leaders of the Democratic Party are constantly demonizing their opponents is really the root of the problem. The significant anti-Semitism in the Democratic Party is also a real issue.

I’m not sure I could withstand from wanting to retaliate. Sadly.
Have you ever stopped to look at the holocaust survivors. The Jewish population in particular. Did they retaliate or did they move forward with their lives when WWII finished and rebuild. There are endless amounts of books written by survivors of concentration camps you can begin with one of the most known books "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankl. These books show that these individuals did not become terrorists but became more educated and contributing members of society.

Mr. Zakaria, Spot on about the Netherlands. After the 30 Year War (Catholic v. Indeed! And I think he nailed it when he pointed to the post-Obama era as being an era of "backlash". Trump was the antithesis of Obama in so many way, including in terms of political culture. The opposite of progressive is regressive. The opposite of liberal is illiberal. The opposite of enlightenment is counter-enlightenment. I myself have spent most of my life living in stable, mature democracies where it is generally seen as a normal thing that the political pendulum will swing back and forth every few election cycles, but never veering too far away from the political center. Trumpism breaks this predictable pattern. Trumpism doesn't wanna follow those boring old rules and conventions. The Trumpist blue print has been copied in Hungary, Brazil, the Philippines, Argentina and several other countries because lots of working-class voters are attracted to the refreshingly cheeky contrast to all those boring, serious politicians. Populism and anti-intellectualism, fuelled by the Kremlin bots stoking the fires and fanning the flames in Western democracies.
YES!!! can't believe I agree with Rumsfeld on this..... "Are you creating more terrorists than killing?" a rough statment ... similar to a Spanish Imperial statement .... "Great sins cast long shadows." WE ALL NEED to be careful with ourselves and each other!!
It's weird that two relatively smart men, would talk about the economy in this way... "under Obama, the stock market tripled", rich people getting richer IS NOT the economy. Median household income: 2008 - $52,029 adjusted for inflation $74,991 (2024) 2016 - $59,039 adjusted for inflation $76,336 (2024) 2024 - $74,755 Gross Domestic Product 2008 - $14.77t adjusted for inflation $21.04t (2023) 2012 - $16.25t adjusted for inflation $21.71t (2023) 2016 - $18.81t adjusted for inflation $24.04t (2023) 2020 - $21.32t adjusted for inflation $25.27t (2023) 2023 - $27.36t If you're numerically challenged, what this means is: Your PRODUCTION keeps going up, and your WAGES stay the same. So, the question becomes... why should Obama, Trump, Biden... or any president get credit from the average voter for "the economy"?
What Fareed is saying about the growing US economy is misleading, since all that newly created wealth is not flowing into the people's pockets but rather into the pockets of the 1%. The growth of the economy is meaningless if the majority of the population does not gain anything from it. Tribalism is a reaction of the working class (so the majority of people) to a state that does not provide for its citizens. Tribalism and right-wing reactionary movements are often an intro to fascism. But remember, this all starts because the 1% does not want to share their wealth, not even by paying taxes, even though publicly funded services helped them acquire all that wealth, not even mentioning the work of their workers.

I think he was comparing per capita income.... not a good measurement as wealth in Mississippi is distributed VERY unevenly. And I'm sure schools throughout Britain excel compared to Mississippi.
1:50 okay that makes no sense. Britain has a population of 60 million, Mississippi has 3 million. No way Britain doesn’t have a bigger economy… please explain?
That comparison between the UK and Mississippi is fake news. The per capita GDP of the UK is 46,000 USD, that of Mississipi is 34,000 USD. The UK would be ranked 42nd after Maine but before New Mexico, Kentucky, Montana, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, vvWest Virginia and Mississippi.
I wish Colbert had let Zakaria finish his thought on how reactionaries have responded throughout the ages to revolution. I guess I'll have to read the book.
The way it is phrased is a bit misleading. Britain has a GDP "per capita" smaller than any state, but the total GDP of the Britain would make it the 2nd highest.
He is comparing per capita gdp to make a point, i.e. misleading people to grab attention. Mississippi edges out the UK by a very small amount in per capita production but that does not translate to per capita income. UK actually has higher per capita income than Mississippi from what I could find. But even if Mississippi had a higher per capita income, to consider just one thing, the poor people in the UK don't have to worry about medical bills.
Very, very misleading, and not even true by any measure at all. U.K. GDP is over $3 trillion, only surpassed by California. GDP per capita is $48,000 in the U.K., $35,000 in Mississippi - and while it is true the U.K. is lower in this than many US states, the cost of living difference is enormous, with the US costs being way higher than the U.K. in almost every measure, so such a GDP difference is more than offset by lower costs in all areas in the UK.
The Dutch company Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography is one of only two companies in the world that make the machines that produce the most advanced micro chips. They’ve moved beyond wooden shoes and windmills.

One of the best journalists around. Smart and honest ❤
Great interview keep it up Colbert!!!
Nice one. Please have him back more often.
Fareed Zacharia is amazing! He always seems to see through the fog to the facts
Imagine how all of us could enjoy this booming economy if the wealthy paid their fair share of federal taxes.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
“But you see, I had to spend that money to make more money. And this other thing lost money. Never mind that my net wealth keeps growing, how could I ever pay taxes? I have to keep spending my money to make more money!”
Basically how rich taxes work.
So they manufacture fake grievances and created a culture war as a way to stay in power.
if it is you to decide what is called fair share. I believe this country will become communist. the rich A-holes believe it is pretty fair now.
I can listen to Fakaria for hours if he can provide lectures on how the past has shaped the current world, especially those aforementioned revolutions.

Minor typo I think ...
Please tell me more. How did we used to measure it if not by GDP?
Social Security has COLA increases every year ...

Much respect to this author and newsman who is a noble journalist
@@TheAureliac Was the word "genocide" uttered or avoided, as here? Talk about an elephant in the room.

I really enjoyed Fareed Zakaria’s interview.

6:53 “Are you creating more terrorists than you are killing?”
Not that I support any terrorism at all, but if I lived in Gaza, had my home blown up, my family, my school or workplace, my livelihood, my community’s structure and its families and so forth? And Israel was just carrying on with their lives, not only gaining prosperity but also supported practically and financially by the USA and many more? I’m not sure I could withstand from wanting to retaliate. Sadly.
Well said.
You’re so right. Terrorism comes from people who have nothing left to lose.
@@zadokcoaching3528 because they had the support of the *entire world* at that time (even though there was still a lot of anti-semitism), both socially and economically. makes it a little easier to not be bitter. it's still obviously a great thing that many holocaust survivors ended up trying to spread peaceful messages and just because they had support doesn't make it easy, but... look at israel. is that not an example of the bitterness that *did* survive from the holocaust? the defensiveness and anger that carried over?
@zadokcoaching3528 . This is an apples to Cadillac comparison and very disingenuous on its face.
Until World War 2 ended, the Jewish people could not even think about doing what you said. They were being systemically targeted and killed. Basic existence and survival were the only things to accomplish.
The Palestinian people are in the middle of their own mini World War 2. They can't even consider building anything of their own without their own recognized sovereignty. They do not have that now.

Mr. Zakaria, Spot on about the Netherlands. After the 30 Year War (Catholic v. Protestant, Treaty of Westphalia, Münster/Osnabrücke), it was the major winner of that ugly War, expelling Spain from its midst and truly became the 1st nation. Issuing stock options, the Netherlands had the first multi-national (1601), the VOC (Dutch East-/West Indies Company), set sail to the entire world (yes, set up colonies, Batavia, now Jakarta, Aruba, Dutch Suriname with certain Dutchmen involved in the slave trade), but also bought, what would become the famous island of Manhattan for trinkets worth then 24 bucks from the local native American Indians! Netherlands brought freedom of religion to America! Yes, much more than windmills, wooden shoes & Gouda cheese! Like Spinoza, many Portuguese Jews under threat by Torquemada (You could not talk him out of...anything, Mel Brooks-ism) found refuge in A'dam...Hup Holland Hup!
The Dutch also gave us tooth decay.
The Dutch are truly a marvelous people, marvelous nation.

It's weird that two relatively smart men, would talk about the economy in this way... "under Obama, the stock market tripled", rich people getting richer IS NOT the economy.
Median household income:

If you're numerically challenged, what this means is: Your PRODUCTION keeps going up, and your WAGES stay the same.
So, the question becomes... why should Obama, Trump, Biden... or any president get credit from the average voter for "the economy"?
Biden is trying to change this. Tough to do with this Congress. Hopefully another Republican or two will resign. Then we will see.
SC’s show is not only very funny, it’s also a great place to hear insightful learned professionals discuss very complex issues.

Britain would be the poorest state, yet they still manage to provide healthcare for their people.
Spot on also that “fact” about Mississippi is incorrect it only applies if you remove London…
Conservative Party has underfunded the NHS .... patients wait a long time for substandard treatment .... yes, it is free ..... people with money have private doctors ...

I would like to hear a panel discussion with Zacharia and Peter Zeihan.
OMG How is Britain even surviving..😮
Because he lied.

The GDP of Mississippi is in the billions, while the GDP of Great Britain is in the trillions. How exactly would it be the 'poorest state' if it joined the US?
