I met her. Giving away my age. I worked in the Toy department at Bloomingdale's in NYC...she was buying Lego for her Grandchildren. She was TALL. I'm 5.10...more or less my height. Very nice and polite. I wish I asked for an Autograph! Great video!!

One of my favorite movies is Gaslight. That movie is where the term "gas lighting" comes from.

I saw Ingrid in the Bells of St. Mary's when I was a chid and was convinced all nuns were beautiful and kind. Then, I met Sister Bertha during my first year in Catholic School. She did not get the memo to be beautiful and kind. Ingrid Bergman was a great actress.

I never comment but she is definitely top 3 for me for who you've covered. She just seemed to have such a balance of both masculinity & femininity, which made it easier to navigate on her own terms, IMO because when you operate too heavily in either, I feel like you become too careless/emotionless or too caring & you sacrifice yourself in the midst. I love that she learned after the 1st marriage to not allow the toxicity drag out for too long. She LIVED LIFE & you can tell she really lived & loved every moment & I love that for her. Ingrid Bergman was talented, beautiful, and versatile. She was also her own woman living in a man's world. As much as I love many of her films, I'm awed by her bravery to follow her heart and be true to herself. Yes, she was vilified in Hollywood and paid a huge price for her affair with Roberto Rossellini. That said, she had 3 beautiful children with him (Isabella Rossellini was one of them) and lived her own life. What's equally impressive was her successful return to Hollywood. Thank you for doing a deep dive into the iconic Ingrid Bergman. ❤❤❤

Her cancelation/blackballing came about for one reason only. Money. She had a very European outlook, so she didn't try to hide anything about the affair or the pregnancy. In American culture that was a huge no no at that time. So, the ppl who canceled her/separated themselves from her did so because they knew the American ppl would cancel them too. Their careers were in just as much jeapordy. It was always about the bottom line, not their personal beliefs or feelings on the subject. As you said many of them were involved in much worse behavior. Ironically my favorite Bergman film is Indiscreet.

She was not EVIL! She was an actress. One usually finds that the moralizers are often less moral than the people they excoriate. Relax, it's just image and vanity. In real life, everyone said what a fun person she was. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. At least, she took responsibility for hers and blamed no one else. There is an All Star Tribute video from 1979 on UA-cam. It's great. Frank Sinatra is in it as well as alot of other actors and actresses who paid homage to her. There have been alot worse things said about actresses than her. Unlike Bette Davis, she didn't have a scandal about beating her children. She was not difficult for actors or producers to work with. Her accent and voice is beautiful. She is not catty with other females, but is professional and real.

I just watched Notorious and I must say Ingrid acted so beautifully and gloriously in this intense legendary movie, along with Cary Grant. This is underrated masterpiece is Alfred Hitchock's greatest work. Ingrid was a true acting talent.

I haven’t watched too many Ingrid Bergman movies but one of my all time favorite Golden Age era movies has to be Casablanca. You should do a breakdown on Humphrey Bogart (He’s not as attractive as Clark Gable but he commanded the Silver screen).

Back in the day removing hair to make your forehead bigger was a very common thing. Usually by plucking, but they never ended up with a overly large forehead so I think it was just done to balance out the features or remove some babyhair. But I doubt a woman who doesn't wear make up or pluck her eyebrows is removing a lot of her other hair.
Cheating is always a scandal, it's just that back then they just didn't divorce. They just lived their lives as if they were single. I'm iffy about her reasons to start these affairs though, so many of these amazing women start dating the most powerful men they come across, who look old and gross. You can't help thinking they are doing it for the perks.

@@lubazak636 We always knew about casting couches but she wasn't a child, she could say she was married and leave the industry. It seems many of these women date men in power, even mob bosses at times and everyone seemed to know about it too.

Totally agreed Karine Ingrid Bergman was playing the Hollywood game like every other actress in Hollywood. The way the men set it up and then she was getting bastardized for it by the very men created this mygonstic institution who just love breaking their own rules and mostly because her heart wasn't in it and she wasn't fool by the pretence of it all was the real problem I mean men were allowed to be heartbreakers not women it just wasn't done then and yes because she was a power player and yes, because she did weld a great deal of influence during this era.
I didn't think outside of Grace Kelly any actress who graced as much astounding beauty with a subtle regal poise on the silver screens with much dignity as Ingrid Bergman that's how I liked to remember her a true Queen amongst a sea of followers that's her unique european quality.
I remember how I used to listen to the commentary and how men particularly justified this hatred of Ingrid because they felt because of the conservativeness of the time rather than they were brandishing a feminist rebel so betrayed by the opposite of her person compared to the characters or rather the roles she was pigeon holed to played with those doe eye fresh look who else could you be better sweet innocent ingenue rather what they could only accept of a foreigner to play that would acceptable because of America's xenophobia & sexism and Ingues was very popular then practically every leading actress was playing was playing a baby. When I was a young giel I really didn't think about this perspective until you brought it up!
I mean you only have to look towards other stereotypes popular for foreigners like Hedy Lamar characterization to know it's true but guess what that's what acting is and damn it she was good at it!
And I got a funny feeling the reason why women of this era wasn't condemning her because during these times where sexual politics were both oppressive and stifling I believe they were secretly too busy fantasize a precariously free life like hers.
