The Chinese stuff is real history, their Cultural Revolution and rise of Mao and Communism. I mean, those specific people didn't exist, but the general events.
It's... pretty weighty, ugly stuff.
yeah, totally based on true events. Wiki "cultural revolution" and you'll find many extraordinary intellectuals that might've achieved so much more if not wrongly prosecuted, and ordinary people were beaten and tortured to death, all because just one person high above called for "breaking the old world." Remember, the same Cultural Revolution thing is still lurking in China today because people are still under the leadership of the same party that kills its own people like Soviet. That's why the party is furious about this show and Netflix is still out-of-reach in China.
The Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Estimates range in the tens of millions dead from Mao's revolution. The young were turned against the old, and then, when the young were no longer useful to the revolution and became a liability, they sent them out to do labor (like deforestation) in harsh conditions. Many died.

As for the beginning, that was a “struggle session” wherein the revolutionary youth would bring forth people whom they believed to be counter-revolutionaries before a crowd and would humiliate and beat them. These were a known phenomenon in the early years of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, as well as later during the “cultural revolution”.

Tower of Babel is a crazy metaphor when you think about it. Divide humans so we can't reach heaven, because if we were all on one accord and saw each other as the same here on earth we could turn it into paradise and live in harmony.

I watched the first two episodes and i got impatient and and confused about the beginning. so i had to look up the whole show. Apparently its based off of a chinese novel series. And this is 1. The US verison theres a Chinese verison too and 2. Seems like its a long ride. But i really want to buy the books now.

They've been running a bunch of particle accelerators for a while now. They even use some smaller, similar devices to make materials for PET scans in medicine.
Worst accidents in working accelerators (discounting head bumps and big equipment falling on you, etc) we're 2 events where people's bodies got into the beam because the safety protocols were ignored in a BIG way. One got hit in the head, one in the hands. The head guy survived (Burgorski incident) and hand guy lost a hand and fingers after tissue died and had to be amputated (Hanoi accelerator accident}. No black holes yet, though.

Squid= Navy service person, Jar Head= Marine, Grunt=Army, Wing-nut/Zoomy= Air Force. These are military slang for each other. Another old slang for Marine was "Sea going Bellhop."

The first book was fun, and the second had an interesting start, but it culminated into one of the most forced endings I've seen, and the third book was entirely uninteresting.

@@YaBoyRockLee Errr… semi-patronising tone from commenter perhaps not warranted, but honestly pretty alarming to see intelligent reactors who have never heard of the cultural revolution or how communist China operated to the extent they think it’s alternate history. It’s an absolutely huge part of world history and probably more relevant now that it has ever been, given China’s current position in world affairs and given how universities in Western Countries are now operating. The commenter making the dumb joke about “I know everything about everything” obviously has a very small understanding of how significant - and well known - this period of Chinese history is, and not just to Chinese people. Not heard of the cultural revolution, and not understanding the basics of how communist China operated is about the equivalent of not having heard of the American war of independence or the the civil war. Nothing wrong with not knowing per se, but to have an attitude of dismissal is alarming.

I find it interesting how many people misunderstand the Babel story. The story text says God scattered the people because he was afraid of what humanity could do when together. That part was never taught me in Sunday school.
