The beginning of this is a true historical event that occurred in China, known as the "Cultural Revolution," which took place from 1966 to 1976. During that time, the Chinese government conducted a comprehensive purge in politics, culture, science, and class. They aimed for communism, materialism, and atheism, encouraging people to denounce each other. As a result, scholars, experts, doctors, and others with certain assets were indiscriminately accused of various nonexistent crimes, publicly humiliated, tortured, and their families persecuted to death, leading to the deaths of millions of people in China.

@@EhtelFeighner If other forces are not thoroughly cleaned up, they will grow stronger and deepen the conflicts again, and the people will suffer again. Therefore, this movement is a movement to wipe out the bourgeoisie and the old feudal social forces. The people must unite and unite all ideas in order to jointly build a strong country instead of being divided. This is what must be done, and peaceful evolution is impossible.

What many failed to understand is that its intention was to strengthen the cultural society but due to systemic failures of administration and supervision the whole thing ran out of control. People took huge liberties interpreting its purpose and use it as an opportunity/excuse to bully, oppress those who they have the slightest problem with. It became petty, personal and absurd into a tragic chaos. That's what happens when you mix idolising your leader and dispensing autonomy in accusation and prosecution without a foundation proper education and management.

To me the sell of this pilot episode was the reveal of the Chinese project's true purpose, and When the "Boss in charge" said "That's our enemy", which implies his awareness of WTF is up, looking at the big picture. I personally didn't mind the backstory because it sets the precedent of a "cultural shock" represented in the Chinese Revolution, the Scientific angle's perspective from East & West POV, and how they both try to meet up in the middle in the pursuit of discovery, but in this case is over a "mad project".

The Cultural Revolution's portrayal is somewhat true to its onset. It's important to recognize that Beijing, being the capital of China, was the epicenter of these political events. Extreme occurrences in the capital do not necessarily reflect the situation throughout the country or at the same level of intensity. Similarly, when the Black Lives Matter movement occurred, not all of America experienced the same level of intensity.

Interesting scene guy in the pub trying to chat to the ladies, you can see their eagerness and arrogance of putting him down just to show off their academic pedigree. I guess they had to modernize stupid oafish men versus genius women.
I don't understand the basic complaint about the show being too high brow? Trust me, they dumbed it down quite a bit to compromise towards an assumed dumb audience. If some of the concepts appear to be "too high brow", you can google it. If you're too lazy to do so, that's on you and not to blame the show for it and I also think people are underestimated.
The Chinese tv show did not dumb it down and I could still follow it and I'm not a physicist, not a scientiest in any way. Liu, the book author, breaks things down quite nicely for a non-scientist reader, but yeah, paying intention is required, but I guess today's audience, especially American ones, should have brought things down pre-chewed otherwise things get stuck in their throats.

Yeah Interstellar was also hard science but they were able to bring it down to a level that any casual viewer understood. this show was also dragging with some plot that's not developing the story. The composer was Ramin Djawadi, great composer but for some reason i did not feel his music here and D&D despite the last season of game of thrones they made one of the greatest complex TV Story of all time, i have so much respect for D&D but i did not really see their story telling complexity in this one.
