These totals don`t count the working homeless that live in their cars / RV`s / or friend( s ) couches. They are still homeless, but work minimum wage and can`t afford apartment rent.
Not 2 hours ago I had a lady ask me if I was hungry. I was just standing by my truck smoking. Homeless is everywhere and she thought I needed help. Bless her.
Here is the honest truth about homelessness in the US. The homeless here want to be that way. I have offered food and work opportunities to people. They don’t want it. They want money. Money for alcohol and drugs. I understand that most are mentally I’ll and dependent on drugs. I can’t help them. I do have compassion and empathy for them but I’m not funding their habits. I don’t know what the answer is but they have to assist in their own rescue. That’s my opinion
"I have offered food and work opportunities to people" Did said work opportunities offer a place for them to stay instead of freezing to death on the streets? If not, then no one in that position is going to take such a hollow offer. "They don’t want it. They want money. Money for alcohol and drugs." Gee, I wonder why? Probably because they're depressed and broken, know they will never have a home again, have untreated physical and mental health problems, no insurance in case they get injured, I can go on. For people like that, the only thing they have left in life is to rot away because that is what society has done for them. "I understand that most are mentally I’ll and dependent on drugs" Please provide proof of this please rather than just your opinion. Low wages, unemployment, high housing and healthcare costs, domestic violence, systemic inequality and discrimination, family disownment, etc., all of these greatly contribute to the homeless crisis in the US, not just "mental illness and drugs". "I can’t help them" You can. Simply speaking out about the issue and bringing light to it can be a *big* help. "but they have to assist in their own rescue" How can they when they know there is little to no hope for them.
This is NOT an exclusively American problem. It exists in exactly the same way in large Canadian cities. The only difference is that the Media won't tell you about the problems in Canada. Here's a video to watch from Chris Nucci. He lives within two miles of the Canadian Parliament building in Ottawa. He has a problem with homeless people setting up camp in front of his apartment building : Why People Are Leaving Canada Forever
For years I thought there were few if any homeless in the UK. Then I visited in both 2022 and 2024. I found out there are people who “sleep rough” there in every big town and city. I saw them in Bath, Liverpool and Edinburgh. The difference is they are not allowed to set up tent cities on the streets. They just come out after dark most places. There are big cities in the US that have similar laws like Miami and Dallas where public tent camping is illegal. Once a city allows permanent encampments everything gets out of control.
This is a little misleading because typically the population of a city is directly proportional to the number of homeless. A better indicator is looking at state poverty rates. U.S. states with the HIGHEST poverty rates: Mississippi: REPUBLICAN West Virginia: REPUBLICAN Arkansas: REPUBLICAN Louisiana: REPUBLICAN Alabama: Republican Source: U.S. Census Bureau
This is a lazy counter since it’s a fact that local politics is more impactful to your life than state politics. It’s not a coincidence that the worst cities to live are democrat run. If what you’re implying is true, then it’s really strange that the fastest growing states are nearly exclusively Republican.
The USA has challenge w/ homelessness and gets a lot of bad publicity, but on a per capita basis it's not above the mean on a global standard. According to Habitat for Humanity other first world nations such as Germany, France, the UK, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand have higher rates of homelessness per 10,000 people.
Where I live in Detroit. the homeless sleep during the day because its so cold at night, many have died while sleeping. So they move around and walk at night to keep body temperatures up.
Many of the idle that advertise "will work for food" ALWAYS seem to refuse a job offer... it's impossible to fine one that will exchange a days labor for pay. The majority of those sitting on the street will only accept cash "help"!!
I can confirm those San Francisco and Sacramento ones. I had a homemade encampment down the street from my condo and one guy across from my condo. I will never forget when I visited San Francisco and the guy fussed at us for walking on the sidewalk and he was trying to sleep.
A lot of people genuinely feel safer outside than at those facilities, also another big issue is that some of the longer term ones also drug test, and the truth is that most people that are homeless are also addicted.
Not most homeless are addicted. Most have mental illnesses. A lot use drugs. In Austin there may be a thousand beds at various facilities combined. Never heard of any facility drug testing. They may search to insure no drugs enter. That may keep some away. There are over 5,000 homeless. There just isn’t anywhere for many to go. It’s also illegal to sleep anywhere in public. People have to sleep. Plenty of vacant land could be turned into camp sites.
If the biggest social welfare country in the world can`t solve the problem, its not an easy problem to solve anywhere: France has an estimated 300,000 homeless people, which is double the number in 2012 and triple the number in 2001. The greater Paris region accounts for 44% of the homeless population in France.
I agree that many of the homeless are mentally ill and/or drug/alcohol addicted. But, there are others, regular people, like me, who worked my entire life & had a normal home & lifestyle. Then in my 50's a back injury made working impossible. During the over two years of fighting with social security disabilty for the benefits I paid into as an employee, I ran out of money & lost my home. I would work if I could. I don't do drugs other than medical prescriptions. But, now I have horrible credit & no one wants to rent to me. Once you're knocked down it can be very hard to get back on your feet. My income is half of what it used to be and rent in Sacramento, CA is high. I know this is a long rant, sorry, but seeing comments like every homeless person wants to be homeless, is lazy, or is an addict is unfair to a growing population of "working class" people, familes some with children, who are facing circumstances beyond their control. Have some empathy. But for the grace of God, it could be you.
That should be a mortgage payment towards a mid-sized house not rent for a 1 bedroom. That is just insane, I don't know how some property owners justify it.
It's safer to sleep during the day. There's a lot of "just world theories" around homelessness because that's how humans are conditioned to think. We like to think of these issues as an aberration in order to avoid believing that it could happen to us. But the reality is, most people are just one false accusation away from living on the streets. "Cancel culture" in the digital age at work. These systems create permanent records that haunt people indefinitely.
"Its not only california" ... proceeds to list every major california city consuming 70% of the list. Dude wants NY to be on top cuz he's from california. Thats why it's top at only 10.6 per 1000... as I'm typing he says "a list nobody wants to be on the top of" and it's not cuz of CAs weather, it's because of their politics. I moved from there lol.

I don’t really believe anyone chooses to be homeless. It’s really sad but people who are homeless are usually addicts, very poor or have serious mental disabilities which should never happen here in America. It upsets me so much that our government takes such good care of illegals but not our precious veterans who have serious mental issues or drug addictions because they just want to numb everything. I’m praying this will all change soon here in the USA and around the world. There’s absolutely NO excuse for homelessness, especially here. It breaks my heart that we don’t take care of those who fought for our freedom but come across the border illegally and we’ll help you live like a movie star! Unbelievable!!!💔
It's the nature of cities. But these examples are as much a product of capitalism as anything else. They're also proof that trickle down economics is a myth. The trickle seems to run out way before it reaches the bottom 90%
Reality is the elites own everything and in turn make it so that they get richer and the result is everyone else stay just above broke or poor. Even if they don't mean to effect everyone else, everything they do effects everyone else.
This is one of the richest countries in the world. No one should have to be homeless. It shouldn't even be an option. I believe as the years go by many more people are going to be homeless because of the economy becoming extremely expensive. It's sad, it really is. I'm afraid for the future. Great reaction guys!👍🏾

Many go to California from other states because of the weather and wealth and beauty. Rather be homeless there than Mississippi.

Not to mention safety, it’s much safer sleeping during the day, less drunks around than during the night that are likely to harass you.

There aren’t enough shelters, etc for the homeless in America. It’s not that they don’t want to go inside.
The shelters are dangerous, especially the women’s ones.

I think maybe one reason they sleep in the daytime is because they can get attacked and their stuff gets stolen at night. It's very sad isn't it.
