Europe is about the same size as the US (Europe is just a smidge bigger) But the European Union is just under half as big as the US. Don't even include Canada or Mexico with the US for size. I'm English but I've lived most of my life in America. I had to quit watching some youtube people/vlogers because the negative and nasty comments from the people in the UK were very upsetting to me. I decided a long time ago that they were just jealous because even though they say they don't like America/Americans they are adopting a lot of our words and phrases, wearing American clothing, eating American fast foods etc.

But,When I say anything like what you’ve said many Americans become very defensive and they are sort of in this denial that the negativity is not negativity and I’m being too sensitive. Lots of people in many countries hate the USA and its citizens, but they sure do love all the money we pour into their country constantly, [at our huge expense] not to mention sending our military to come to their rescue at the drop of a hat.
The US has made most of the rest of the world wealthy through globalism and the post war international order we established. This includes our enemies like China. Almost no one alive anymore has ever experienced how the world works without the US leading it. As we pull in the anchors and close up shop many countries will have a rude awakening. The US paid very dearly to build this world and we did it to protect ourselves but also all of the peace loving countries of the world, East and West. The ending of the Pax Americana will be good news for Americans and not good news for most of the rest of the world. Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan will show everyone what the new world order will look like. It will be a return to great power struggles, increased wars of aggression, border changes… it will be like the 1800s again. And America will largely be isolationist, within our hemisphere at least, and focus on autarky.
On the subject of fast food... I think that a lot of Americans come to the realization that when you have so many of the best fast food options available you tend to not eat fast food all the time.... Plus in America we have a ton more food options besides fast food. A lot of Americans will eat at home or eat at a sit-down restaurant and save fast food for when they are in a hurry.

Britain’s are not different enough from us for us to think of them as “ other” which is probably why no American ever says anything bad about British people, Australian people, Canadians, etc. We’re too similar in too many ways. I watched a video about an hour ago that was a mass of people who were chanting about the USA and it was not a positive one. It is true that America has always been respectful to many countries and their people, but it is almost never a mutual feeling.
My son worked at a camp this summer with many other workers from all over the world. One of the girls he got to know (from Europe) said “Your very aware and intelligent and yet you’re American.” 😩
What’s ironic about the stereotype of us being dumb and unaware is we can say that about some Europeans. You don’t know about all of our states. You don’t know how our political system is run. There are many things that some of them don’t know and that’s not a problem for me.
It is funny to watch these videos. Europeans and people from the UK always have an opinion on what America has done or is doing. Most Americans could care less what’s happening in other countries (unless it could directly affect us).
FOOTBALL was well established in the US well-before the British started calling soccer football. The British made the switch in the 1970s and 1980s for some reason-knowing Americans already have a sport called football. 🏈
I remember meeting some people in Russia who always talked poorly about America, but then when their relatives managed to get a green card, they would suddenly go, "Oh, they're so lucky! It is so great." And this was long before the war with Ukraine. Or others who criticized America's fast food but then when I said, I'll buy you lunch answered, "McDonald's would be good."
I understand some people may not like some of the things we Americans do or say. That said, I feel “hate” is a strong word. We can agree to disagree, but not have hate in our hearts. IMO

I always think they'd be more annoyed that so few Americans follow the sport that they probably don't realize we're hosting the World Cup next year. Rest assured, soccer isn't mentioned a lot due to disinterest in the sport generally speaking.

I knew they were either crowns or veneers as I have veneers myself. My point is, it was important to him to get his teeth looking straight and nice just like many other Brits these days. That wasn’t quite a priority back in the day in England but, things have changed since then and that stereotype needs to be squashed.
We really don’t eat that much fast food here. It’s expensive, loaded with fat and salt, and we know it’s terrible for us. My family might pick up some Burger King once every 6 months or so as a treat when we’re in a hurry or someone had surgery and wants a treat or the schedule is just too tight to make dinner at home. Our grocery stores are awesome, so home cooked food is always better. ‘Americans love and always eat fast food’ is kind of a myth. It *is* easy to become overweight on traditional American home cooking, though. We get all the best comfort food from every country here, so our diet is a lot more varied. Makes it a little too easy to only eat the comfort foods and ‘good’ stuff if we’re not being careful. 😂

The other parts of the "Brits called it Soccer first" counterargument is that football/soccer was brought over in it's collegiate form (which is what was formally known as Association Football a.k.a. Soccer), and even more importantly, by the time Soccer started gaining a following in the U.S. we already had a commonly played game called "Football".

37yo husband and father of 3, born and raised in Texas. Love watching your videos Lewis. If you ever have questions, comments, or concerns regarding America or more specifically Texas, I'm here to be your guide my boy. Here's my take on this video: 1.) The term "soccer" is a shortened version of "association football". The word "association" is often shortened to "asoc". In the 1890s, British schoolboys would add the letters "er" to the first syllable of a word to make it their own. For example, "rugby" became "rugger". However, the first syllable of "association" is "ass", so British schoolboys skipped over it and went to the second syllable, "soc", thus forming the term "soccer". Depending on who I'm talking to I will call it "soccer" or "football". 2.) Flying from LAX (Los Angeles, CA) to DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) is about a 3.5 hour to 4.5 hour flight depending on your airline and pilot. Every year my family and I drive from DFW to South Padre Island (very south Texas) and it is about a 7.5 hour to 8 hour drive, and that's us not even leaving Texas. 3.) Stereotypes are alive and well but for good reason. Most American's do not approve of the quality of food our government pumps out. It's cheaper to buy 5 cheeseburgers, 1 large french fry, and 1 large soda, than it is to buy a salad. I personally don't eat fast food at all if I can help it, but I work out and count macros, etc.. I'm a little more health conscious than most Americans. 4.) Jealousy towards America makes a lot of sense. We're the youngest country but also one of, if not the most, powerful. A lot of our traditions actually started from other countries and we merely adopted, but also, upgraded them to make them better for our economic situation. Great video. Entertaining as always. I live in Illinois and my sister lives in Oregon and driving non-stop would be over 26 hours without stops. Flying taking 6 hours to the closest airport and another 3 hour drive to get to where she lives.
Retired American military. Spent a lot of time in Iraq and Afghanistan with British among many other countries. British were always some of the best i ever got to work with.
Through my job I have the privilege of meeting people from all over the world. People from Scotland, Ukraine, Japan, Britain and many more. Not once have I ever heard anyone voice a dislike of anyone from another country. I find it an honor to have this opportunity and always welcome them to the United States. I absolutely love chatting with them and always wish them the best on their travels.
Once upon a time you could get a one-way flight for cheap. Airlines would run specials and cut the cost. Not anymore. It's cheaper to drive, especially if you have a group. 2 parents with 2 kids would be way more than driving. Plus you get to see more of our beautiful country.
I've been lucky and had the opportunity to travel. Over the years I've been to 46 of our states as well as 40 other countries. When traveling internationally, I found that most didn't hate Americans, but were very curious. The most often question was what they saw in movies real, to which my answer was, "very seldom". Just like with most any other country we have rich and poor, we often complain about what the government is or is not doing, we have good people and some not so good people, and everyone is trying to have the best life they can have. The bottom line is we have far more in common than different. I must admit I do two things when I leave the country, I try to speak in a lower volume and, don't use the term soccer. 😁 I must admit I remember a Britt friend's first trip here, it was hilarious! She came in the summer and we live in the south, so the heat was hard in her, and she quickly understood why every place had air conditioning. The fact we have drive up service for almost everything, was also surprising. Of course the shoe was on the other foot when I visited her! I saw something I've never seen, a bar in a church! She explained it was for social gatherings. Also seeing so many buildings that are older than our country. The term old for buildings had a totally different meaning.
Travelling in America is also the same currency. Most people miss this in videos. I can drive 30 hours to las Vegas from where i live and its just the same as if i was in my hometown
America is actually two entire continents combined predominantly into two sections North America and South America. The United States is only one section of North America but somehow it has become synonymous with the entirety of America. The US is not America any more than Great Britain is Europe. Here's just a bit about the size of our country. I live in the south east and my daughter is in Alaska. It would take 73 hours to drive to her house and I would have to go through Canada to get there. She is 4,488 miles from me. It's 13 hours by air.
Football Originated in college in New Jersey between Rutgers and Princeton university when they put the two together and played as a college sport and began there and exceeded to what it is now. 🏈⚽️🏉 America still loves and plays soccer and rugby as well as basketball being second biggest sport after Football.

As an American I'm often so jealous of Brits - free healthcare, time off work, beautiful countryside and architecture - so many beautiful buildings. I think it's just seeing something different from what you're used to but the Cotswolds was stunning and British homes and castles are amazing - oh gosh and your proximity to the rest of Europe! You guys can go to so many places that we'll never see in a lifetime unless you pay a lot of money to get there and can get the time off work to go.

The way that we see time and distance is so drastically different. London to Paris is roughly 6 1/2 hours by car. For an American that is the equivalent of, I have nothing planned this weekend, let's take a little road trip. That same trip is about 2 1/2 hours by train. This translates to, overtime was canceled today, but I need to be back home this evening for work tomorrow. If we fly, well then, it could have just been a half day at work and we didn't have anything else planned. I once drove 16 hours, each way, because I had an unexpected 4 day weekend and had never been to the southern most point in the continental US.
Brits, take a vacation to America. Walk into any bar. As soon as they hear the cool accent, you're not paying for another drink the entire night. We love Brits.

I see America and the UK as familial too. But I think of the UK more like our parent. We rebelled because we came of age and you kept trying to control us, like a kid storming out of their parents house as soon as they reach 18, but we grew up and reconciled. We're the rebellious extroverted older brother of Canada, the introverted golden child. Australia is another sibling, the athletic one who would rather be outside than in. Ireland is the cool aunt. And the family is the English speaking world so we have other relatives too in countries like South Africa, New Zealand, India, etc. Not sure how I'd qualify their relationship with us, cousins or half siblings or step siblings or something. lol.

We are mostly facsinated with British people and UK people in general. The only time you'll hear us talking bad on the British is on the 4th of July, but it's more bashing on the crown and not the actual people. The founding fathers were British, most people in the original colonies were British. A lot of our east cost cities and towns still use the names the British gave them. Like all of New England. If this was 200yrs ago, sure America would hate the uk, but 2 world wars was enough for us to drop the beef and be friends.

I don’t hate on anyone because of who they are or anything like that . I’ve learned to appreciate life. I went to bed one night and the next day I struggled to get on my feet and didn’t make it until 8 months later. That was 16 years ago and I am on my feet but have a terrible time trying to walk, sometimes I can’t. So my point is there are so many things to worry about other than what people have or where they’re from. Far as the British people. I spent all of my working career in the military or working as a contractor for the military. Had the opportunity to be around a good many of British military. Not even going to talk about maybe an incident here or there but for the most part like Lewis said it was more like brother and sisters and as a whole so glad we had/have each other as allies. There are a lot of people on each side of the pond I guess that participate in childish nonsense but I love the British.
Listen, I have to fly my daughter across the states twice a year. She lives in Tennessee and I live in Southern Oklahoma on the border of North Texas and just to fly her from Tennessee to me which is north Texas. It’s $200 one way and then another 200+ dollars to go back not to mention is the cheapest flight and she has to take four planes total. She has to take a plane to another state get off of that plane onto another one just to get here in southern Oklahoma/North Texas. That’s one way then when she goes home, she has to do it all over again with two different planes so the whole travel time is like eight hours each way and that’s by plane on the cheapest flight possible. So $400 twice a year to fly just from Tennessee to Texas that’s it mega mega expensive for a mid class family hopefully maybe that’ll give some of these people. An idea of how expensive it is to fly across the states.
‘Football’ is American style. ‘Futball’ is called Soccer. Many city sport complexes have converted old baseball diamonds to Soccer fields and is gaining popularity, especially among younger folks.
I eat fast food twice a year. A lot of Americans don't care for it as a regular meal. They're fat because of their eating habits and British are a close second.
you said something about it being cheaper to travel in America, but...comparatively, it might cost 50 pounds to fly to Poland. But it would cost the equivalent of 500 pounds to travel the same distance by flight in America. There Is a -lot- of distance between places. And while you are going from one place to another, the idiosyncrasies are different but a lot of the thought process is the same. You go from Britian to Spain or Britian to Germany and the culture is vastly different.

For any Europeans visiting multiple states in the US will demonstrate that we are a Republic of States. With a large land mass and multiple climates, state cultures differ enough for this to make sense.

I'm English but I've lived most of my life in America. I had to quit watching some youtube people/vlogers because the negative and nasty comments from the people in the UK were very upsetting to me. I decided a long time ago that they were just jealous because even though they say they don't like America/Americans they are adopting a lot of our words and phrases, wearing American clothing, eating American fast foods etc.
Yes we do intermix a lot. American eat a lot of British food enjoy our music love our phrases

But,When I say anything like what you’ve said many Americans become very defensive and they are sort of in this denial that the negativity is not negativity and I’m being too sensitive. A Native American here, I love the principals on which it was founded, I love the people (even the haters), I’ve been to 90+% of the states (from Alaska to Florida; Hawaii & California to Massachusetts and most in between). Been through much of Canada as well. I’ve gotten to visit a share of Europe (including England & 3 months in Austria), Turkey, Israel and Egypt. didn’t meet any haters throughout!!!- for that matter, met some very loving and kind people. I know I’ve been privileged and try not to “rub it in”.

Lots of people in many countries hate the USA and its citizens, but they sure do love all the money we pour into their country constantly, [at our huge expense] not to mention sending our military to come to their rescue at the drop of a hat.
The US has made most of the rest of the world wealthy through globalism and the post war international order we established. This includes our enemies like China. Almost no one alive anymore has ever experienced how the world works without the US leading it. As we pull in the anchors and close up shop many countries will have a rude awakening. The US paid very dearly to build this world and we did it to protect ourselves but also all of the peace loving countries of the world, East and West. The ending of the Pax Americana will be good news for Americans and not good news for most of the rest of the world. Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan will show everyone what the new world order will look like. It will be a return to great power struggles, increased wars of aggression, border changes… it will be like the 1800s again. And America will largely be isolationist, within our hemisphere at least, and focus on autarky.

On the subject of fast food... I think that a lot of Americans come to the realization that when you have so many of the best fast food options available you tend to not eat fast food all the time.... Plus in America we have a ton more food options besides fast food. A lot of Americans will eat at home or eat at a sit-down restaurant and save fast food for when they are in a hurry.

I watched a video about an hour ago that was a mass of people who were chanting about the USA and it was not a positive one. It is true that America has always been respectful to many countries and their people, but it is almost never a mutual feeling.

FOOTBALL was well established in the US well-before the British started calling soccer football. The British made the switch in the 1970s and 1980s for some reason-knowing Americans already have a sport called football. 🏈

I remember meeting some people in Russia who always talked poorly about America, but then when their relatives managed to get a green card, they would suddenly go, "Oh, they're so lucky! It is so great." And this was long before the war with Ukraine. Or others who criticized America's fast food but then when I said, I'll buy you lunch answered, "McDonald's would be good."
I understand some people may not like some of the things we Americans do or say. That said, I feel “hate” is a strong word. We can agree to disagree, but not have hate in our hearts. IMO

I knew they were either crowns or veneers as I have veneers myself. My point is, it was important to him to get his teeth looking straight and nice just like many other Brits these days. That wasn’t quite a priority back in the day in England but, things have changed since then and that stereotype needs to be squashed.
We really don’t eat that much fast food here. It’s expensive, loaded with fat and salt, and we know it’s terrible for us.
My family might pick up some Burger King once every 6 months or so as a treat when we’re in a hurry or someone had surgery and wants a treat or the schedule is just too tight to make dinner at home.
Our grocery stores are awesome, so home cooked food is always better. ‘Americans love and always eat fast food’ is kind of a myth. It *is* easy to become overweight on traditional American home cooking, though. We get all the best comfort food from every country here, so our diet is a lot more varied. Makes it a little too easy to only eat the comfort foods and ‘good’ stuff if we’re not being careful. 😂

The other parts of the "Brits called it Soccer first" counterargument is that football/soccer was brought over in it's collegiate form (which is what was formally known as Association Football a.k.a. Soccer), and even more importantly, by the time Soccer started gaining a following in the U.S. we already had a commonly played game called "Football".

Here's my take on this video:
1.) The term "soccer" is a shortened version of "association football". The word "association" is often shortened to "asoc". In the 1890s, British schoolboys would add the letters "er" to the first syllable of a word to make it their own. For example, "rugby" became "rugger". However, the first syllable of "association" is "ass", so British schoolboys skipped over it and went to the second syllable, "soc", thus forming the term "soccer". Depending on who I'm talking to I will call it "soccer" or "football".
2.) Flying from LAX (Los Angeles, CA) to DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) is about a 3.5 hour to 4.5 hour flight depending on your airline and pilot. Every year my family and I drive from DFW to South Padre Island (very south Texas) and it is about a 7.5 hour to 8 hour drive, and that's us not even leaving Texas.
3.) Stereotypes are alive and well but for good reason. Most American's do not approve of the quality of food our government pumps out. It's cheaper to buy 5 cheeseburgers, 1 large french fry, and 1 large soda, than it is to buy a salad. I personally don't eat fast food at all if I can help it, but I work out and count macros, etc.. I'm a little more health conscious than most Americans.
4.) Jealousy towards America makes a lot of sense. We're the youngest country but also one of, if not the most, powerful. A lot of our traditions actually started from other countries and we merely adopted, but also, upgraded them to make them better for our economic situation.

The thing about being American, I didn’t necessarily realize Europe doesn’t have a lot of what we have. I knew the obvious stuff based on our size but I don’t think typical people realize it. So, when we are seen by some as cocky/arrogant…it’s not intended that way. We aren’t being superior. It’s just a cultural thing. We interact with each other that way. The needle is just in a different place for us. Bc When I meet an arrogant person, they are arrogant with everyone and I don’t like it. Americans just have a cultural difference that I think is being misunderstood. Positivity. I’ve tried really hard to watch Brits and see our differences (bc I didn’t see in us, what was so different). So, I muted the tv and I picked up on a lot. We do interact differently. It’s just cultural. No harm is intended.
Just saying, if people in other countries think we are intentionally trying to turn them off, we aren’t.

Retired American military. Spent a lot of time in Iraq and Afghanistan with British among many other countries. British were always some of the best i ever got to work with.
Through my job I have the privilege of meeting people from all over the world. People from Scotland, Ukraine, Japan, Britain and many more. Not once have I ever heard anyone voice a dislike of anyone from another country. I find it an honor to have this opportunity and always welcome them to the United States. Once upon a time you could get a one-way flight for cheap. Airlines would run specials and cut the cost. Not anymore. It's cheaper to drive, especially if you have a group. 2 parents with 2 kids would be way more than driving. Plus you get to see more of our beautiful country.
I've been lucky and had the opportunity to travel. Over the years I've been to 46 of our states as well as 40 other countries.
When traveling internationally, I found that most didn't hate Americans, but were very curious. The most often question was what they saw in movies real, to which my answer was, "very seldom". Just like with most any other country we have rich and poor, we often complain about what the government is or is not doing, we have good people and some not so good people, and everyone is trying to have the best life they can have. The bottom line is we have far more in common than different.
I must admit I do two things when I leave the country, I try to speak in a lower volume and, don't use the term soccer. 😁
I must admit I remember a Britt friend's first trip here, it was hilarious! She came in the summer and we live in the south, so the heat was hard in her, and she quickly understood why every place had air conditioning. The fact we have drive up service for almost everything, was also surprising. Of course the shoe was on the other foot when I visited her! I saw something I've never seen, a bar in a church! She explained it was for social gatherings. Also seeing so many buildings that are older than our country. The term old for buildings had a totally different meaning.
Travelling in America is also the same currency. Most people miss this in videos. I can drive 30 hours to las Vegas from where i live and its just the same as if i was in my hometown

Here's just a bit about the size of our country. I live in the south east and my daughter is in Alaska. It would take 73 hours to drive to her house and I would have to go through Canada to get there. She is 4,488 miles from me. It's 13 hours by air.
Football Originated in college in New Jersey between Rutgers and Princeton university when they put the two together and played as a college sport and began there and exceeded to what it is now. 🏈⚽️🏉 America still loves and plays soccer and rugby as well as basketball being second biggest sport after Football.

As an American I'm often so jealous of Brits - free healthcare, time off work, beautiful countryside and architecture - so many beautiful buildings. I think it's just seeing something different from what you're used to but the Cotswolds was stunning and British homes and castles are amazing - oh gosh and your proximity to the rest of Europe! You guys can go to so many places that we'll never see in a lifetime unless you pay a lot of money to get there and can get the time off work to go.

We have all kinds of stereotypes here, but that's what makes us great.
I'm not a big people person, that's my dogs' job. She adores people. I don't care what you look or sound like. I care what you act like. I'm not impressed with what you wear, I'm impressed with what you've accomplished. Your actions and abilities are what show your true character, and that's what counts to me.
For us, in my family, we only ate fast food on Saturday or Sunday because it was my mom's day off from cooking.
The way that we see time and distance is so drastically different. London to Paris is roughly 6 1/2 hours by car. For an American that is the equivalent of, I have nothing planned this weekend, let's take a little road trip. That same trip is about 2 1/2 hours by train. This translates to, overtime was canceled today, but I need to be back home this evening for work tomorrow. If we fly, well then, it could have just been a half day at work and we didn't have anything else planned. I once drove 16 hours, each way, because I had an unexpected 4 day weekend and had never been to the southern most point in the continental US.

I see America and the UK as familial too. But I think of the UK more like our parent. We rebelled because we came of age and you kept trying to control us, like a kid storming out of their parents house as soon as they reach 18, but we grew up and reconciled. We're the rebellious extroverted older brother of Canada, the introverted golden child. Australia is another sibling, the athletic one who would rather be outside than in. Ireland is the cool aunt. And the family is the English speaking world so we have other relatives too in countries like South Africa, New Zealand, India, etc. Not sure how I'd qualify their relationship with us, cousins or half siblings or step siblings or something. lol.

We are mostly facsinated with British people and UK people in general. The only time you'll hear us talking bad on the British is on the 4th of July, but it's more bashing on the crown and not the actual people.
The founding fathers were British, most people in the original colonies were British. A lot of our east cost cities and towns still use the names the British gave them. Like all of New England.

It took me almost as long to get from my place to JFK Airport in New York as, then, to go from New York to Heathrow Airport in England.
Honestly I go to New York City every once in a while. It’s just different to Florida as I don’t deal with the tourists, the snowbirds, nor the crazy people. Yeah I know about Florida man but still New York I love because it’s just a place I can be free as I can actually get what I want. I see what it is and yeah it’s available. I’m on my own for a weekend and nothing bugging me. I finally can breathe you know.

I know their inclinations to narcissism, tribalism, crime justified by selfishness or warped morality, and the fact that most Americans would even bump off th ones they love if they thought it'd benefit them.

I don’t hate on anyone because of who they are or anything like that . I’ve learned to appreciate life. I went to bed one night and the next day I struggled to get on my feet and didn’t make it until 8 months later. That was 16 years ago and I am on my feet but have a terrible time trying to walk, sometimes I can’t. So my point is there are so many things to worry about other than what people have or where they’re from. Far as the British people. I spent all of my working career in the military or working as a contractor for the military. Had the opportunity to be around a good many of British military. Not even going to talk about maybe an incident here or there but for the most part like Lewis said it was more like brother and sisters and as a whole so glad we had/have each other as allies. There are a lot of people on each side of the pond I guess that participate in childish nonsense but I love the British.
Listen, I have to fly my daughter across the states twice a year. She lives in Tennessee and I live in Southern Oklahoma on the border of North Texas and just to fly her from Tennessee to me which is north Texas. It’s $200 one way and then another 200+ dollars to go back not to mention is the cheapest flight and she has to take four planes total. She has to take a plane to another state get off of that plane onto another one just to get here in southern Oklahoma/North Texas. That’s one way then when she goes home, she has to do it all over again with two different planes so the whole travel time is like eight hours each way and that’s by plane on the cheapest flight possible. So $400 twice a year to fly just from Tennessee to Texas that’s it mega mega expensive for a mid class family hopefully maybe that’ll give some of these people. An idea of how expensive it is to fly across the states.

I eat fast food twice a year. A lot of Americans don't care for it as a regular meal. They're fat because of their eating habits and British are a close second.

you said something about it being cheaper to travel in America, but...comparatively, it might cost 50 pounds to fly to Poland. But it would cost the equivalent of 500 pounds to travel the same distance by flight in America. There Is a -lot- of distance between places. And while you are going from one place to another, the idiosyncrasies are different but a lot of the thought process is the same. You go from Britian to Spain or Britian to Germany and the culture is vastly different.

For any Europeans visiting multiple states in the US will demonstrate that we are a Republic of States. With a large land mass and multiple climates, state cultures differ enough for this to make sense.
