Today on the channel, I drive the legendary Toyota Starlet Glanza V - a short-lived car that preceded the Yaris and is easily one of my favourite superminis.

Don't think the na 4efe engine has 85bhp pal, think it's nearer 100bhp in the glanza s.
@@mypinis carfromjapan.com/specifications/toyota/starlet/581381482afaa2c4b2868a12
Thousands of these and the previous GT ended up in New Zealand and were super cheap for most of the 2000s. My last one was $800 for a GT with 250,000km on it, Didn’t blow any smoke and apart from a slight crunch on third gear ran like a dream with nothing but oil changes for maintenance. Sadly they are pretty rare now and starting to go for silly money
That's old Toyota engines for you. Never needed anything but oil changes. (:
Still many of these driving about in Cyprus too.
There are tons of them in the caribbean
Had a stock 1.3 starlet. Cruised in it once for an hour at a constant 155kmh. Great on the corners too.
Ohh my God Jay Emm you legend , man the starlet has a special place in my heart and the glanza is the holy grail . I need this glanza in my life 😍.
OMG! 🤣
Still loads of these terrorising the back streets of New Zealand - bless em. Love a Glanza V.
These used to be 10 a penny in Ireland when I was growing up. Great little car.
10 a penny would still be overpriced.
Another great review!
Love how Toyota just use the same part across models, the wiper and indicator stalks, window switches and isolator switch are the same in all my previous 3 Toyotas and the starlet.
Thought Toyota were introducing new parts for old models so hopefully they produce parts for these too
Great to see you review the Glanza James.
My very first car was a 1997 Glanza V that I imported myself from Japan way back
in 2004. It had a few mods on it when I got it like Livesports bodykit, Bride seats, rear seats removed, full roll cage
lovely SSR Spec-C 15" wheels and a few other bits.
Of course since it was my first car and the whole JDM tuning thing was very popular at that
time, I of course spent an absolute fortune on the car, eventually bringing it to about 250hp.
I still haven't car, its been in my garage since 2009.
Hopefully whenever I can get enough money together, I will eventually get it back on the roads again.
They are a brilliant car.
Oh and a little hint for the owner of the car you reviewed James.
If it came with an LSD from factory, it should say it on the sticker on the inside of the drivers door, or
possibly the passenger side (its been a long time since I've checked).
Worth having a look anyway.
Or test the LSD - one wheel on tarmac, one wheel on damp grass. Does it spin or does it move?
I had the Unicorn of starlets, the Starlet GT turbo quad light. Only made them for one year and imo is the best starlet. Sold it for £3500 in beautiful condition back in the mid 2000s. Crazy what these are worth now. The famed soft clutch was the big failure on these and that the bonnet scoop would flood the spark plugs in heavy rain.
Owned and drove what I considered it’s successor. The Daihatsu YRV Turbo 130. Loved it! But handling round corners was a bit iffy! The Autobox was a surprise especially in steershift mode… 👍🏻
Why do people who own these always have 3 of them? Haha 😅
They were dirt cheap for ages so it was easy to grab a whole car for parts for like 500$
1 to race, 1 to daily drive & 1 to speculate
These were really popular in Australia when they came out in ‘97/98 , you still see them on the road, with some over 320K klm (200K mi) , but not the Glanza model. There are some these around, but these were private ( Grey) imports.
Cuz three of them fit in one parking spot :-)
Redundancy? 😂😂😂 On ships for example You have say 3 main engine Lub Oil pumps, One running and 1st and 2nd Standby! 😆😆
Finally........🎉 thanks. From today onwards I'm going to request reviews because you happen to be the only youtuber who really considers his viewers. 😅 Big thanks again. Did not watch this video yet, but I will as soon as I get free time.
These used to be everywhere in Ireland just 10 years ago, now they are like seeing a unicorn in a sea of boring diesel golfs, passats and Audis.
Now that looks alot of fun!!! Do like that body kit and overall styling, generally have a soft spot 4 Starlets and 90s Japanese cars. Cheers Jay for your knowledgeable and very entertaining review, you often find weird and wonderful motors.
I owned one of these brilliant cars regret having to sell it to this day. Fantastic review you did this car justice.
I only ever had the very rare non turbo SR model, a guy I went to college with had a Glanza that was tuned to just under 300bhp and it was absolutely RAPID. Crazy to think you could pick these up for £1500 once upon a time!!
That's the tale of a lot of these older cars. At one point they were just another car. 😞
No, you had an SR Starlet, not the non turbo Glanza, they're not that rare either they're just worth a bit more than the normal starlets these days
@@2Skills4u I never said it was a non turbo Glanza 😂😂 I said non turbo SR model which means an SR… also, not that rare?? Are you having a laugh? There were only 1000 SRs in the UK when they were brand new, let alone now…
Currently sitting in my silver SR whilst reading this 🤣
@@aivarusk218 SR's are still easy to find for sale to this day...
I had a Starlet SR in black, peeled off the awful stickers and did an airbox mod to make a really fun little hatch with a nice TTE exhaust from memory albeit stock interior. Was a great little reliable thrash hatch 😁👍
TY, 'Yung Mann'! Thanks J, a lot of fun there, & like most Toyotas back then, most of the boot taken up by the name! 🙏🙏
Oh, I love this car! Together with the Yaris Turbo.
We did had a Caret spec Starlet in Europe. It was called the GXi. It had the same chrome accents on the outside and wonderfull velours seats on the inside.
I remember hiring a stock 1.3 Starlet in Oz. Drive amazing well- great handling, peppy, quiet.
An epic car ! I’m so glad you done a review on this , even the non turbos are fantastic
Damn i Love this car!
I had a non-glanza starlet for my first car and it already felt quick with its 75 non-turbo hp.
Always wanted to buy one.
I've always noticed that about older compacts like this, they always feel a bit quicker than the numbers would indicate. I'm in the US so naturally we don't get anything fun here, but I own, as an example, a 1999 Corolla with a 4spd automatic. Quite possibly the most boring car you could imagine, however... 120 hp, from a non-VVTi variant of the 1ZZ-FE, and a kerb weight of about 1100 kg - it's surprisingly fun to drive! It handles _far_ better than you would expect for a commodity economy car and it's not as slow as you would think. The biggest problem is the extremely long gear ratios, but the very wide torque band makes up for it.
Same here, it was way faster than all the clios, puntos and fiestas all my mates had. I’ve never known a car take so much abuse and never ever had a single part replaced
I like the nod to MCM with that chopped air refresher
Jayemm it would be lovely if you could review the normal starlet also . Very popular cars over here in my country 😊 . loving your reviews
I can help. "Same car but REALLY REALLY GUTLESS". Hope that helps.
@@CathodeRayNipplez 😂
Top video! This is my brother Chris’ starlet, weird watching this from being his brother and seeing this car daily🤣, but still a great watch!😇
Absolutely cracking car a mates older brother had one growing up and we all loved the thing!
Great review. I've been had mine about 10 years with minimal fuss. Makes a great fun wee daily driver. Did get an FN2 Civic Type R to replace it a couple of years ago but ended up selling that and keeping this as I much prefer the 90s simplicity (and being able to see out the back). Just need to swap the bubbly driver's door over for the spare one sitting next to my desk :-)
I remember a lady friend of mine had one of these in the USA.
I need to say that she had a Starlet that was modified with that engine. It was a fun little car. Not particularly fast but a lot of fun! We had some around town romps in that little guy.
Oh and since it was Toyota of old. It never gave her any serious issues. (:
These were never sold in the US?
I remember a few of these being around when I owned my Daihatsu Charade GTti. Very similar cars. Good times.
Nice video thank you like this glanza
front mount intercooler, downpipe, exhaust and wind the boost to 13psi (just below what the 1bar map sensor would allow) and you have a rapid starlet indeed
I had 2 of the older ep82 starlet gt turbos in the early 2000's when I lived up in Shetland. One was a gt advance quad headlight model and the other was a hugely modified ex Japanese track car. Now I live in Australia, I am looking for another one.
I did not know the yaris replaced this!! Thanks james
Been waiting for this one
Love the condition, honest and used
Another great review!
Love how Toyota just use the same part across models, the wiper and indicator stalks, window switches and isolator switch are the same in all my previous starlets
Thought Toyota were introducing new parts for old models so hopefully they produce parts for these too .....
Great little cars. I've had two - a pre-facelift and post-facelift, both white near-fresh imports with only a couple of modifications (cat-back, induction kit, aftermarket BOV).
The owners club / forum is the best resource for information on these cars.
Fun fact: the Lo-boost mode is controlled by a little vacuum solenoid in the engine bay, any by default actually restricts 1st and 2nd gear to Lo mode, so those gears actually only use ~115bhp - this can be bypassed by rearranging a couple of lines on the solenoid, a 30 second job, it removes the functionality of the 'Lo' switch but gives full 135bhp in all gears.
Is that restriction in 1st and 2nd gears only in Lo-boost mode?
Another good video ❤
James, what about testing a charade DeTomaso?
They were cool, very rare little beasts and if you did a video showing the negative points on them I may no longer lust after one!
I'm in Canada. Never seen this animal, but I do miss my '98 Honda DX 5 speed hatchback. Reliable, fun to drive (low to the ground and good handler), great on gas, and surprisingly comfy for a compact car.
EK Honda Civic’s Rule!
I own a Starlet GT from 1993. Same engine, and a riot to drive.
So I first drove one of these back in 2001 (no licence but thanks JDM mental step dad at the time who basically let me live me gran turismo dream with all the cars you had) and to this day having driven type R's and leon cupra R's ... this was simply more fun! It's a little rocket!!! I've not watch the video yet 😅 I got so giddy seeing Jay and this pop up I was like NOPE gotta spew my opinion! So first off they're so fucking nippy! And I don't mean swift sport nippy I mean RS2 killing nippy, the handling was so precise! Suspension was hard but manageable and being 6ft 6 I was relatively comfortable in there! These cars are a gem! A true undersung hero that was in an era dominated by the old Civic Type R and that mental Talbot sunbeam lotus messed around with!
Proper fun little car. I would love to hear what you think of the Suzuki swift gti 16v from the nineties James. Cheap but very cheerful. Anyone out there got one Mr Emm could borrow?
I LOVE the Mighty Car Mods chopped fingers air freshener!!!!
Love this car i used to own a k24 ep3r facelift now am looking into these ones shame we cant get 1993 models here in Aus
Realy enjoy your car reviews Jay and wondered hav you ever found the Toyota Sera to look at.
Yep - I reviewed one
These reviews of normal-ish cars are great. The supercars are fine but with things like this you can think I wonder what one of them costs and look it up and find it's doable! There seems to be a few of these for sale in NZ. Missed the days when they were silly cheap though I imagine.
I've had a n/a Starlet since 2017 bought it of an older gentleman, learnt to drive suppervised by dad. 2023 and its still on 50,000 miles completely stock. Love it, however the 74 hp is not the most exciting.
Ok they're completely unrelatable to an EP3 or any kind of mini so you stop that right now. They are however an amazing car for what they offer. Light, fast and very enjoyable at low speeds. Even better is the EP83 Starlet GT. Lots of EP3 Turbos for sale in Ireland 🇮🇪. Ireland has all the best jdm cars. The Brits snubbed "grey imports" to the Irish delight!
I've had 2 of these in the past (an EP82 and EP91), Sold them both for
I have an na 98 starlet, lowered with KYB gas shocks and poly bushed. It only has 75 hp but is an absolute hoot to thrash due to it weighing nothing. Just did 1100 miles on a scottish camping trip, best car ever with cool rarity value.
@@BrettSauve they're Excel-G gas shocks part number 1062849 RMP and LMP. Hope that helps.
Hmmmm, would love to have a drag race between this, a 6N2 polo and my CRZ, I think it would be close!
You answered the exact question I looked everywhere for. How would I, a 6ft 2 inch person, fit in the vehicle.
Thank you!
We never got these in South Africa, but we did get the Conquest RSi...an absolute screamer of an N/A 1.6L hatchback, think Civic R before Civic R was a thing...
I wonder if anyone remembers the Toyota Paseo. A Starlet based coupe thingy that kinda competed with the Ford Puma here in Europe.
Gran Turismo 1 Starter Pack favorite ! 😆
😂❤❤❤ What a beautiful little beast.😊
Beast 🤣
Awesome
I have one of these in the usa only issue is finding parts such as calipers and simple things like buttons
My friend used to have a 250bhp about 10 years ago
got one here in the states super fun turned it up to 13psi should be making like 150-160hp and you can check if it has a LSD by the vin
How can I check that exactly?
What was that at the 10-minute mark when the lorry went past? I wondered if you'd lost a camera.
I remember when you could get a standard fresh import for 5k
My friend had a great race against a galanza and his Almera gti, very close, but Almera won just
There is a local glanza pushing some 345 bhp on a heavily built 4efte
Dihatsu charade gtti is something rare as well
the cup holder is a valid option the starlet i have has no cup holders
Had the opportunity to buy ones of these when I was 18, but couldn't afford the insurance 😢
@@Chris-ob7qd it was about £4k per year, but that was over 15 years ago.
Glanzas are mental, my mates was batshit crazy
can the engine for this v version fit in an ep90
Mega little car, I drove one in the late 90's and used to blow GTE 16v astra's off...Ha !!
It must’ve been modified because my old GTE 16v Astra was significantly quicker than my friends Glanza turbo.
All Glanzas ended up here in Australia or New Zealand
I had one of these at college wgich i bought for 850 quid.
These are great little cars, but to get shut of an 86 for it is madness.😂
There are lots of these kicking around Auckland even now....
I love your contents, can I get a comment heart?
❤
What the hell is a parking stick? Haha 😂
Ah, the mighty car mods chopped air freshener.
9:58 😂😂
What the hell happened there?
When are you doing the Daihatsu Charade GTI might as well do the full gambit of cars nobody gave duck about in this country 😂
ITS ON YOUR EAR 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Give it a revin Kevin.
You could tell if it had an lsd on the plate in the engine bay
I'm surprised this hasn't seen a tree or phone pole yet
Mate 😂😂 have you dyed your hair 😂😂😂😂😂. You need to get your bird under control 😂😂😂😂😂. Or stop drinking one or the other 😂😂😂😂 ❤❤
Fabulous little car
Would rather a march supercharged k10 micra
These are fun little cars, especially when they’re running 200+ hp, but they’re overpriced for what they are
Alfa Romeo for the milleniens.
i think im early
That's what she said.
And as a bonus, they will go for 500 thousand k's without any problems and without leaking any fluids or burning any oil, virtually indestructible.
One of my favorite cars in the 90s, my brother has one fun to zip through the city with it. The new starlets are trash.
Is it just me or the front looks a bit like a subaru legacy?
Bucket of lukewarm water over the car when doors frozen shut. Never had a problem.
Starlet Glanza sounds like a 1840's Can-can girl
I Know this is really NAF as we Pomms used to say! 😂 But I don't care anymore I'm 72'and a child of the 70s 😆😆 0-60mph in 8.2 secs! I'm shocked! For a supposedly Hot Hatch is it? Or is that the base model James?, I was expecting you given power to weight ratio, to say mmm Sub 6 at least 😂 Even my old XJ 8 could overhaul that! (In a straight line that is! Old JJ pretty good on the mountain roads for a non BMW luxo barge(of which an 88 year old mate of mine in Innisfail has 2 beautiful examples! Both 740's I think? 99 and 01😆 but yep little Starlet and EP3 would leave us on the mountain roads of North Queensland for sure! For Pomms and Yanks and others who don't know, think Central America With Aussies instead of Spanish or Portuguese! (No disrespect especially to Colombians!) 😂😂 Stay Safe Yaz Awl!
Haven’t watched this yet but having owned both a Glanza and ep82, I much prefer the ep82. Way cooler in my opinion.
Cooler 🤣
@@CathodeRayNipplez yep. A nice stock ep82 is a cool little car nowadays.
@@declancarey1435 "In the eye of the beholder" - Anon
Used to see so many of these on the roads in Ireland about 10 or 15 years ago, now you'd hardly ever see them. Makes you wonder were they all just written off or did the supposed "car guys" fail to take the proper maintenance measures to keep an older car roadworthy.
You used to be able to get these for less than 2k, so most have probably died due to negligence
No it’s mainly due to car insurance companies a few years ago will not not insure JAP imports . Any ones you see on roads nowadays in Ireland is usually insured through classic car policy .
Always driven by numpties round my way
Well yea, I mean just look at it. Attracts a certain type.
These were all over ireland a few few years ago. Mine was dyno'd at 167hp and was a little rocket. Great little cars. Not worth the money being asked today, I paid 8500 euro for mine. Ive seen one with a 1.5 forged engine and 300hp. One of these is far better than a gt86, they are utter dog shit to drive.
No mate its not a Baby Honda Civic EP3. It made a name on its own... Toyota Starlet GT and later model Glanza. tyn
