She has that look we dads all get from our kids when we try to show them what we thought was cool when we were kids. They watch with us out of pity and occasionally get. Just like our jokes and dance moves.

It's suppose to have "bad" effects since it's a homage to the old Flash Gordon serials of the 1950's.

Yeah, rather than compete with Star Wars's realism, the the legendary film producer Dino De Laurentiis decided to take a comics & film serial approach and add a dash of campy humor. Ironically George Lucas wanted to film a Flash Gordon movie but couldn't get the rights so he made Star Wars instead.

I'm 69, so I saw it when I was 30. I went into the theater with no expectations, and had a great time. Flash works because it doesn't take itself too seriously. And, the colors and set design are perfect for a comic book movie.

To join the people talking about the effects in Flash Gordon, there were so many effects shots planned that the blue screen work had to be done using an electronic separation similar to what was then done on TV.
It rarely shows, except that some layers can be coloured differently due to re-copying. It mostly works, and sometimes actually follows the original comic page's panel structure.
The big thing for me is that the scriptwriter was Lorenzo Semple Jr., the writer of much of the Batman TV series from 1966.
This guarantees a queasy, ugly violent undercurrent that cuts across the broader, more innocent comedy.

So glad I got to see them live. Once on rhe works tour, and twice on the kind of magic tour, including Knebworth and what ended up being their last ever concert with Freddie. They flew in on a helicopter and at the end Freddie wore the crown and robe while god save the queen played. Epic.

I had the same experience watching this movie in the theater when I was 10 years old. I loved it! The theater at the time was selling a companion movie booklet, and my parents bought me it because I loved the movie so much. I wish I still had it...it had all behind the scenes pictures and concept art done for the making of the movie etc.. I got the soundtrack album by Queen and wore it out, so good!! Glad you did this one!

I mean, it's a De Laurentiis film. It's gonna be covered in camp. I saw Star Wars in theaters before seeing Flash Gordon. My dad took me to see Flash because he grew up watching the original TV serials. So, I was around 5 when I first saw Flash. It's a guilty pleasure of mine and I watch it all the time. It's a 2 hour rock opera. If you go into the film with that in mind, it's an awesome movie. If you go into the film for the very first time expecting a serious take on the character, you'll often times judge the film too harshly. Rock opera. Remember that going in. Enjoy.

I'm a few years older than you, (just five) so we both were teens in the 80s. Cable for us was basically what UA-cam, Netflix and Hulu are for teens of today. And HBO was the THE service to have to watch movies. I remember when we first got cable (I think it was maybe 1982) and our "remote" was a device that connected to the cable box; it wasn't wireless.

The special effects were hokey, even for the time. That is what was intended. Flash Gordon was originally a comic strip from the 1930’s, and there was a deliberate attempt to recreate that comic strip feeling. As such, I think the special effects are amazingly successful. Even the costumery looks like it walked off the page of a comic strip published in 1934. The choice of Queen for the music was sheer genius because their music has that space-opera feeling that suits the movie perfectly. But the special effects are also perfect for the artistic vision of the movie.

Funnily enough, I once wrote an ode, in the style of McGonagall and Milligan, after I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Brian Blessed aka Prince Vultan at a Q&A/screening of Flash Gordon back in my uni days, and he launched, apropos of nothing, into an hour+ set of him doing his various routines, explaining his life and career and various crazy adventures; the man required neither a microphone nor any additional means of amplification - just a stage, a captive audience, and for the host to get out of his way and let the man work the crowd. This was my ode to the occasion.
OooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooyezoyezoyez! Gather round, folks, for the Ballad of Brian Blessed...
T'was in the spring of 2014, son,
When Lord Sir Brian Blessed struck the town of Lincoln without rhyme or rea-son.
Late that night, without any warning,
He blew out the venue's entire PA system, simply by yawning!

If you want to get hardcore queen and some film nostalgia in the same timespan with your daughter, try THE HIGHLANDER. Has the 80's , and queen did the whole soundtrack to that one as well. And since your daughter is 14, it is appropriate for her age range. I was exposed to this film when i was 7 in 1986 and became a convert to being a metalhead. In fact you might say that if metal was akin to street drugs, then queen would have been my gateway band.

Quite a few very good actors appeared in Flash Gordon, we see at least a couple of them in this music video.
Brian Blessed was a fantastic stage and screen actor from the UK. Big bearded men on one of the flying things.
The other is Timothy Dalton, who was later to play the role of James Bond 007, although only really made the 2 Bond movies the Welshman was and is incredibly intelligent.
Dalton is what's known as a Shakespearean actor.

I think I had Sam Worthington as Flash, Ben Kingsley as Ming, William DaFoe as Klytus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Dr. Zarkov, Mila Kunnis as Princess Aura, Mel Gibson as Prince Vultan, Megan Fox as Dale Arden, and Alex O'Laughlin (from Hawaii Five-0) as Prince Barin. Actually some of those I just made up on the spot just now, but you get the picture. I think a Remake with today's VFx would be badass.

I love the Flash Gordon film,I’m also a fan of the 50’s T.V series too. I had the sticker album of the 80’s movie. I own it on blu ray now.👍

They knew they were doing a camp movie. :) And of course, not to be confused with Flesh Gordon.
But then, the movies of the day are more and more a showcase of computer- generated effects, where the plot is 6th sequel to a 3rd generation of someone with more modern looking outfit, with music sampled from a song that has been a decades old hit by itself.

Aged about 8 I think my first tingly feelings were seeing Ornella Muti as Mings daughter in this movie.

Flash Gordon is based on a comic book and the movies a faithful adaption it was made in 1980. Some of the special effects don’t hold up but it’s a bit campy a bit cheesy but it’s still a great movie

LOL I'm the same age and had the exact experience. And the movie ended with a question mark and I thought for sure there would be a sequel. But it was a bust. If that movie were released today it might be rated R because its pretty sexual. Max Von Sydow was so awesome.

Its true listen to your dad. My dad had me sit on his lap and watch the movie a long time ago and I enjoyed it says an early 90s child which wasn't actually to far off from the 80s.

I was 4 when I saw this movie. I had seen Star Wars already, meanwhile my daughter is 6 and hasn't seen a single movie in the theatre. I had seen Indiana Jones and empire strikes back but we had no internet or cable.

You should probably inform them of how much money it took to make Flash Gordon compared to the amount spent on todays films, maybe that would help them understand the budgets they had to work in when it comes to ability of special effects etc ..

What do you mean “Flash Gordon approaching”? Open Fire! All weapons!

When we were kids, we had a sort of understanding when it came to special effects. We knew they weren't real, and our expectations only went so far when it came to how realistic they ought to look. To us, the more real it looked, the cooler it was. Sometimes, it was better when it was surreal. Check out Shogun Assassin. Do you really think human beings have about 10 gallons of blood in their body under high pressure? You would if you thought that shit was real after seeing someone get slashed in that movie. But it was fucking awesome.

I love this movie, love the music and would possibly be interested in seeing it remade, if it was done well and kept the Queen soundtrack. Maybe rerecord the soundtrack with Queen's new lineup. I've heard Adam Lambert does a really good job as lead singer.
