It's kind of like "th" in English, as the person above has pointed out, one of those unfamiliar sounds we substitute with more familiar sounds at first ("d", "f", "z" instead of "th" in English) when learning a new language, that we then learn to articulate as we come to master a language.

The video is misleading. The correct pronunciation of the letter "Ы" is "УЙ!". I speak few languages myself (also Russian), that's why you can trust me.

I Romania we have that sound like ( î ) and for us it's a everyday thing we use it so much and we have two Îî from I and Î from A Ââ we have another one Ăă but that's another story it's more complicated but Russian and Chinese,Korean, Japanese have it too tho

You're genius, I've been learning Russian for a year now and constantly struggling with this. No teacher I've had could explain it as well as you. Apparently no one knew how to pronounce it with the correct mouth position despite being perfectly able to make the sound themselves. Had an Ukrainian teacher in the beginning who said it's supposed to sound as though someone's punching you in the solar plexus while saying i, I didn't really get it then despite her best efforts 😅
Apparently, these were incompetent teachers, an experienced Russian teacher should know how to pronounce the sound "ы" and be able to explain the correct position of the tongue and so on

This was my biggest roadblock until I found this video. I'm finally able to sight read Cyrillic almost as quick as English, but I've been mystified by this one little thing. This is the best way I've seen so far to describe it and I'm already trying it in longer words. Thank you, liked and subbed.
This might help: russian consonants are velarized before the ы so what this means is basically that your tounge is bunched back like you would pronounce the letter w (like in the word "we") so when your tounge is in that same position after velarized consonant, the sound ы comes extremely naturally

Man, I hear what you're saying, it makes perfect sense, but I STILL sound like I'm just doing a Kermit the frog impression. And my tongue gets "stuck" because I'm consciously trying to place it there and then the next word gets smashed into the Tbl or Mbl. So hard. At least I can say the Russian "R" sound properly

You probably already have learned to pronounce it, but I still wanna share a tip to pronounce it instantly. So, there are two "Ng" sounds in English: the soft one (as in "singer"), and the hard one (as in "Kong".So, try pronouncing "singer" with the hard "Ng".You will get "sыnger". That's a common mistake of Russian speakers, by the way.I myself have fallen into this
As a professional teacher, I can recommend the following - say the English [u:] (like in mood, room) and while saying it smile. It is important; start with pronouncing the long u: sound and then smile while making the sound. This way your lips, tongue, and jaw get in the right position and you pronounce a perfect ы sound. Practice it as many times as needed, the more often the better. Your articulatory system will be able to remember what to do next time you need to say ы in Russian.
I just noticed something. I've been learning Russian through English, because that's where most resources are, but I think the Russian ,,ы'' sounds very similar to the Portuguese "e", which is my native language. That makes it so much easier. At least, the tongue positioning is very similar.

Problem is how different language sounds on same letter. Basically i or I or ы sounds similar in Russian and Turkish.thats why russians are more prone to speak Turkish than other Nationals
Which variety of Portuguese do you natively speak? I'm asking because I've read that a sound similar to ы exists in unstressed syllables in European Portuguese but not in Brazilian.

It's kinda like 'oo' from "book" combined with something halfway between 'i' in "sit" and 'ee' in "meet."

Problem is how different language sounds on same letter. Basically i or I or ы sounds similar in Russian and Turkish.thats why russians are more prone to speak Turkish than other Nationals

@@oben9 Yeah, Russian spelling and pronunciation are kind of similar with Turkish one
"Ы" became from combination of "Ъ (hard sign)" and "i". So it was "ъi" in beginning
The russian sounds are very easy to me because of my native language, portuguese. I think the "ы" is the most dificult but it was easy to me
I've heard that russians who learn portuguese have almost zero accent, I guess it works in both ways
Which variety of Portuguese do you natively speak? I'm asking because I've read that a sound similar to ы exists in unstressed syllables in European Portuguese but not in Brazilian.
@@luckyluckydog123 It's in European Portuguese, in words like "melhor" the "e" sounds like ы in european portuguese, in most of the varients of brazilian portuguese they pronounce it with a stressed э like in the word "это"
