WHY KIA BURNS ENGINE OIL, INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION HYUNDAI

  • The most common reason for your Kia or Hyundai vehicle to have massive oil consumption problems is gonna be the PCV Valve. This is a maintenance part that needs to be replaced every 60k miles, but most people either don’t know they have to change it or figure it’s something they don’t need to think about. But a bad PCV valve can be the difference between your car running 100 percent or running like a V8 in a 4 cylinder. The part only cost 15$ from the dealership and my mechanic actually put it on for free for me, took him 5 min. Super easy and worth giving a shot if your car is having these problems. Don’t start big! Start small and then if the problems are still happening then go bigger. Best of luck and I hope Everyone has a beautiful day! :)

KIA and Hyundai gdi engines suffer from oil consumption and crank bearing issues. Some other things you can do to limit oil consumption:
    1. Use a high quality oil for shorter oil changes.
    2. Use an engine flush to help clean the ring area.
    3. Use a good combustion cleaner like BG 44K occasionally.
    4. Go up a weight in oil
    5. The best is a piston soak using Berryman's B12 chemtool.

I had this same issue on a new VW Jetta back in the 90’s. The dealers said, oh it’s normal for the engine to burn a quart of oil every 1000 miles! After getting the regional VW rep. Involved , they tore the engine apart and one of the pistons was scored and fixed the issue. Got it back, no oil usage and drove it another 200k miles. Oil just does not disappear, if it’s not leaking it’s burning. So, for the oil to burn, it needs to be getting passed the pistons somehow. I would bet that the piston rings are failing on these cars due to a bad design. I would sell that car as fast as I could and don’t buy another Kia or Hyundai. They are known to have engine issues, it’s common.

Yup, the only reason a pcv valve will fix the oil issue is if your issue is an oil leak(usually a leaking valve cover gasket). The PCV relieves the pressure. It's very common for kia valve cover gaskets to go and leak and its most likely from the pcv valve sticking.

My Hyundai Getz supermini with the G4ED 1.6 liter engine is also using about 1 liter (about 1 quart) of engine oil every 3-4K km (2-2.5K miles). Bought the car new in 2003. Already clocked up about 475K km (nearly 300K miles) so yeah, not too happy about it. It only started using up oil about the last couple of years; never had to top up any oil in between services (every 10K km/6K miles) prior to that. Asked me all about it and told me to have the car towed in then I did my research oh my God people get rid of your kias. This has all kinds of things wrong and a Pcv valve. it’s not gonna fix it. Excessive oil consumption in Kia engines is a result of bad rings. Simple test is to drive your car, step on the gas pedal and accelerate fast. Look in your rear view mirror to see if any smoke is coming out of exhaust pipe. If so, that smoke is oil that is getting burned with the gas as a result of worn piston rings. Eventually, excessive oil will start to foul your spark plugs. Kia engines have major recalls along with class action lawsuits against them.

I had a 2013 kia soul with 2.0 and all the bells and whistles. Never had the oil problem even after it went over 100,000 miles. Later sold the car but then after bad luck with used cars, went to a used 2015 Kia Soul base model with the 1.6. It burns oil like mad. I did finally change spark plugs at same time i changed the pcv valve but i never assumed it would help with oil burning. No offense to this guy but i dont think this is a fix. And im not a car guy by any means but the pcv valve was incredibly easy to replace. It's a hose removal and wrench. Few minutes. $15 and less than 15 minutes. Got the part at Advance

So after an oil change, when does the car start to consume oil? If the car starts to gradually consume oil and within 1k miles, the level went down to half or more, then there could be another issue than just a fuel dilution. If engine starts to consume oil after a 1 or 2k miles, then fuel dilution is possibly making the oil thin and then the viscosity of oil isn't 5w-20 any more, it is much thinner. As a test, you can try a light 5w-30 full synthetic oil such as Pennzoil Platinum and then Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. These oils are not as thick as others in the same grade.

@bapez31 I replaced it on a 2014 Kia Sportage and didn't help. It's actually using more now. Carbon builds on the valves, flakes off and clogs up the oil rings and won't let the oil drain. I'm going to try another fix by adding Berryman b12 through the sparkplug holes.

@bapez31 Thanks! Before I bought it I thought I had researched fairly good on them and thought they were making better vehicles. I didn't once see anything about GDI engines. I have a sister in law that had a Hyundai SUV and loved it. She had no problems at all and put well over 200,000 miles on it. It must've been a year right before the GDI's. I did the " Italian tune up" yesterday, maybe that and Berryman B12 will fix it.

My 2017 Elantra just turned 98.000 miles, bought new. Its not using any oil between 4000 mile changes. Had a 2007 kia spectra, bought new. Sold it around 130.000 miles, it wasn't using any oil either, still running great. One thing I always do is follow the recommended break in procedures in the owners manuel. Dont drive it hard, no full throttle accelerations, dont maintain a steady speed, but vary the rpms while driving, but avoiding any high rpms 1st 1000 miles. I think the vast majority of complaints about kia and Hyundai come from 2nd and third party buyers who buy cars that have been poorly maintained, and driven like its a Corvette or something . Ive had 3 kias and the 1 Hyundai, all bought new, all were very reliable with no major issues with well over 100.000 miles, I bought a 2021 kia k5 GT LINE with premium package in May of 21. 20.000 miles now, no issues, as it should be. This one is GDI plus Turbo, so I'm going to be doing 3000 mile oil changes, its my intention to keep this one indefinitely, and Turbos are hard on oil.

With Kia and Hyundai, it’s likely a bad engine, good thing is you’re covered under warranty until 150 K 10years due to the lawsuit. Had my engine replaced at 130k a month ago. Just make sure The oil is filled to regular levels, and not sludge, or they’ll blame it on negligence and you lose the opportunity to get the engine replaced. So fill it up before u go. And enjoy your new engine. 😁

You can't my wife bought a brand new Kia sole I always check the oil they put a new engin in at 4000 miles now it don't use any oil between changes its not the pvc valve or oil filter lol the cylinder walls are shot your oil controls ring can't do its job Kia has a bull shit department. Remove valve cover. From your car engine.
    And clean 2 drain tubes..
Thera are inside. In The valve cover.
You have 2 drain lines on both side.
If remove 2 drains lines and clean them. You will have no more problem with oil...
Every car kia and hunday with 35 -80.000 Miles got same problem with oil. ..
If you dont clean the 2 oli drains. .
The oil will go to exaust and burn. It.
Then ashes going to plug your catalyc convertor..
Some people must replace catalyc convertor every 10-12 monthes.
