blame military and swat for that on that camera @ScottyKilmer @0:50
I hope my finding is useful this one looks about right
The world would have unlimited energy if we could hook generators and batteries to Scotty’s hands in these videos. Haha. He’s the best. 💪👍
Imagine how happy his wife is.
i had not thought about that ----- you are clever -----burn one for me ---- keep up the good work
Very much so. : )
As an aircraft mechanic, borescoping has really taken off in about the last 5 years for troubleshooting cylinders. We like the vividia ablescopes. They’re cheap enough to replace if you tear one up but good enough quality to see valves and crosshatch
I like it better when Scotty uses video subject lines that aren't as dramatic as the last two. "I'm dying" and this? There's no need for the drama, as the content is so valuable.
Your honesty as a mechanic seems to be a "lost virtue" these days. Keep up the good work + God Bless You !
Some of these newer engines that use low tension piston rings are consuming loads of oil. The problem is ppl are being told they can go 10 thousand miles or more between oil changes, and the oil ring gets gunked-up and freezes in place allowing the oil to blow by. The answer to this is to use a quality oil, and change your oil every 5 thousand miles.
Do an oil analysis on most cars at 10K miles. Blackstone Labs will tell you the oil looks fine and can go further. Changing oil is seriously overrated. I mean it's cool if you like overchanging cuz u like to work on cars and it makes you feel better, but that's 40 bucks I'd rather save.
A replacement for Scotty's discontinued boroscope is the AUTOOL SVB305, same type of flex head boroscope with same features, is available at many online stores.
Professor Scotty, the man, the mystique, the legend.
And I thought I was going to hear a way to fix an oil burning car, great saleman
I don't even bother listening to Scotty. I thought he was going to recommend a mechanic in a can like he usually does, but I never saw a photo or him holding it up. Thought I was actually going to have to watch the video.
Scotty if that is the 1zz-fe motor, there was a TSB on those engines. What happened is Toyota mis-engineered the piston. What can be done is you order the new pistons and oil control ring or you pull the pistons drill one or two more holes in the pistons, or maybe open up the existing holes and then modify the oil control ring with more of a gap to allow more oil flow. The restriction of oil ended up excessively building up carbon and causing the oil control rings to seize and then the oil couldn't regulate the temps and, hence, the oil burn. Supposedly, Mobil One Full sythetic works best, I have ran Castrol Edge full synthetic for over 10 years and it's a amazing oil that's doesn't shear and handle the heats great but doesn't suspend and clean carbon like Mobil One does. I've owned my Corolla for almost 13 years. When I switched to Mobil One from Castrol Edge because I couldn't get it, I did end up having a leak near my chain tensioner. Mobil One full synthetic also demonstrated it's cleaning ability immediately vs Castrol Edge full synthetic. I would recommend to anyone who has the tools, time, and the ability to fix the piston and ring problem or just run Mobil One Full synthetic and possibly every once in a while run Marvel MMO in the last fews miles of a oil change! 👍
Scotty you are a genius auto mechanic.
It's amazing how much information I've gotten out of Scotty over the years and it hasn't cost me a penny. In fact, it's actually saved me money. This guy is a hero in my eyes.
@@ThomasKing19933 I agree.
I don’t see how Scotty identified how to fix the oil burning engine. This was more about diagnosing, not fixing the problem
Yup ,no answer on how to fix oil burning .?????
Thank you for saving my time.
My thoughts exactly. This feels like an advert for that fancy scope
These scopes are phenomenal, and " they look cool too!" Scotty is the BEST!
Got one myself, love it. Scotty is again right.
The cylinder wear you showed us 5:35 into this video is from the piston skirt rubbing the cylinder, not the rings. That's a classic piston skirt mark.
Interesting that Scotty still has a " stupid beauty cover" on his own car
Yep, Scotty's place in Rhode island and Scotty's place in Tennessee there are two big piles of "stupid beauty covers" that no one wants.
@@gazzafloss
Having the "beauty" covers on ups the value at selling time. The average schmuck thinks they make the engine look more modern. If you take yours off, save it for when you sell.
@@boyracer3477 lucky for me my 25 year old Mazda Miata MX5 doesn't have, never did have any sort of "stupid beauty cover", just a plain old engine. Scotty would love it. 😂
Some of them do serve a purpose, so make sure you check before chucking your stupid beauty cover lol.
@@gazzafloss
Pretty engine it is also.
I have a liftime powertrain warranty on my 09 ram with hemi. Recently noticed massive oil consumption, about 1 qt every 1,000 miles. It holds 7 qts. Took it to the dealer, they did an oil consumption test and confirmed that i was in fact burning about 1qt every 1,000 miles. Thats when they busted out a tech bulletin from chrysler saying that its acceptable/“normal” for any engine over 50,000 miles to burn up to 1qt every 750 miles. So they wouldnt do anything. And my first thought was “my oil changes are every 3,000 miles so its “normal” to burn 4 qts of oil? Thats over half!!” And thinking of the 2013+ rams, their interval in 6,000 miles for oil changes so chrysler is saying it would be normal for them to burn 8 qts of oil, which is all of the oil and then some. I mean, seriously?!? They are out of their minds.
👍🏻I had the same issue with a leased vehicle. After all the paperwork was completed I said Oh buy the was it burns a qt every 1,000 the look I got was priceless
9:52 🤣 nothing beats a picture!
At least you can fix an internal combustion engine. When the battery goes out on a EV, you're screwed.
I hear ya. But the powers that be don’t want the lower class and middle class to have their own means of transportation. In the future the 1% will probably be the only ones with their own cars.
The worst part is, there is very little you can fix on a BEV at home.
@@BigEightiesNewWaveTotally agree.
@@nickz6143What's stopping you from owning a car?
Have you kept track of the cost to rebuild or replace a modern engine? A $3000 new Leaf battery is Half that.
Scotty really makes understanding technical mechanical issues so Fun 😂👏💯
i remember my brother was into chevy camaros back in the 70s n 80s and a common prob they had with oil gettin in the comb. chamber was the oil seals on the valve stems a tedious job not particularly hard but it fixed it or greatly improved most of the time
I have a depstech USB C camera I use with my phone, it's really great
I resolved the clogged low tension rings with berrymans, down the cylinder 4 times over 24 hrs. It dissolved the gunk, had trouble starting after treatment but it now burns one tenth of what it used to
I think Scotty likes the borescopes. I will watch the video again to make sure
Also helpful for DIY gynecologists and proctologists 😉
MrPoopyFaulk
Scotty: "plus my weird nephew REALLY seems to be getting into auto repair now!"
I get great photos of PreTurds.
Thanks Scotty straight to the point on this video. I wish the mechanics in my area were like you.
Awesome video Scotty!!! Great tip and information. I'm going to order a Borescope to compliment all of my other tools. Thank You!!
If you want to fix it you can look into the engine restore with the copper lead and silver that seals a lot of the grooves and the cylinder wall and the trick in 2-stroke small engines and if you like in your car put some inside the cylinder with a syringe and the spark plugs out and run it up and down to coat it and it works really fast then just never put in something like a 7.3 l Diesel with a high pressure oil pump you will screw your injectors and everything else but that is an unusual case
Thank you Scotty Kilmer.
Answer: The Old AT-205 Reseal Formula before they changed it a couple of years ago. The new stuff doesn't work as good and they charge you Double for it as well.
No wonder! I used to have good luck with that stuff.
Agreed. The change was not for the better... including when it went from $10 to now $20.
Lucas makes a great one these days.
What's it called.
@@tonyb7748 Which one are you talking about with the Lucas?
Scotty did say how to fix a car that burns oil. He said to have the engine rebuilt or swap the engine with a newer one, but it costs a small fortune. Monitoring the oil level and filling up as needed is an affordable way of doing it.
There are additives that do help, like AT-205 or Restore engine treatment, and using an oil stabilizer can help, too.
Part of me really wants to rewatch this whole video and count the amount of times he mentions that articulated camera. He was so salty that that company stopped making them and converted to the 3 camera borescope…. I love it though! ❤😂
I could have sworn the first time I read this it said “My Wife will never be the same after this” 🤣
"The Gee in Geespotechnik stands for Gebrauchtwagen.... probably!"
Scotty: "You can't argue with a picture!"
Corporate lawyer: "Okay, I like a challenge"
Scotty is the Man! The absolute best G.O.A.T! Thanks.
In this High-Tech world, the BEST tools are predominately Low Tech.
Speaking from experience. CHEERS!
HI, I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER SOMEONE JUST TOLD ME THERE IS OIL ON THE ENGINE ( I SAW IT) AND IT PROB MEANS I NEED HEAD GASKETS BUT IT RUNS GREAT, IS THIS AN ISSUE OR NOT FOR THE VEHICLE. THANK YOU FOR ANY OF YOUR YOUR HELP ANGELA
You don’t have to replace the head gaskets, just check oil level more often. Peace of mind is wonderful, I would recommend replacing the gaskets. Take care.
That marked cyl was from being possibly overheated, the piston expands more than it would under normal temps and grabs the cyl.
I like your sense of humor!
Leak-down test is best. Leak-down test tells you per cylinder, where the leak is. Intake valves/exhaust valves/cylinder head/rings.
Leak-down is by far the most accurate.
Leak down works with women too.🙃
Yes, it drips out.@@antefizulic6851
If your car burns oil you need a bore scope to confirm the bores are scuffed.A good pcv system will reduce any visible smoke.
Borescope indicates 48 deg C in the air and scotty wearing denim jacket. Hmmm, either borescope needs cal or scotty is broken.
48c and you`re wearing a button shirt and a jean jacket??,,I`d be half naked sweating like crazy!
Lose some weight.
Shouldnt you vaccum the spark plug area before you take it out to make sure dirt doesn't get into the head?
Yes but he's the type that makes fun of engineers.
That would be great too see your blend doors in the dashboard
Scotty i have a 2017 terrain i just turned 100000 ru s great no leaks anywhere should i change the transmission fluid some say leave it alone no problem just leave it
I have an endoscope camera and flexible with the attachment magnet and hook if needed. Does that work for cars too. You have been a lifesaver for me and my 2003 Toyota Camry. I did buy it pre wrecked and I have a knack for avoiding accidents and slowly fixing it up and upgrade parts. Tie rods and struts would be great video for the potholes from hell is Nashville and I know it just doesn't effect tires I would appreciate a how diagnosis and repair front wheels/end work for me to save the engine mounts from cracking.
Scotty likes that articulated one 😂
Scotty, how is a judge supposed to distinguish between the cross-hatching of a bore-honing and cylinder damage ?> Please tell me that !
This Scotty video is even better than usual!!
Right ,we now how know how to fix an oil burning engine for free !
For a fee. Scotty will use that flexi tool to perform a no anaesthesia lower bowel look-see. Remind him to keep the hand waiving to a minimum.
Maybe he can find your lost TV remote you sat on.
I would lovevthis guy as my neigbor
Scotty you have a FZ6 Fazer !!! Nice bro I have a 2005 and love it
AHAHA that honest review about the flexible scope had me on the floor laughing!
Absolutely great video scotty keep up the good work
Thanks for the video. Very informative. Just wondering though, how are you managing to keep your garage so clutter free compared to your last one?
Nobody could have said it better
We love Scotty!!
6:46 he likes Benny hill,lol,
Love your videos, you and I have something in common. Working on cars especially my own! And I also have a ZZR. Love that bike, comfortable and fast enough! Question? I have a 2013 Toyota Rav4, Where's the best place to get Timing chain kits? Keep up the good work.
As usual Scotty knows what he is talking about! Worked on aircraft engines and we used borescopes ALL THE TIME. In fact, engines have borescope access ports as part of their design. I'm sure airframes do as well. Found out borescopes were affordable a couple of years ago and bought one. It is indispensable for inspecting areas on your car that you cannot access without removing quite a few parts. It has helped me eliminate potential problem sources and locate the actual problem. I've also used it to inspect many items around the house (gas furnace, sump pump, interior of walls, etc). I also agree with Scotty in that I wish it had the bendable "finger" tip.
Best mechanic ever 😊
My life will never be the same after watching this either.
As of April/24, looks like DepsTech has articulating models back in stock: DS630.
I'm waiting for the Free Part....The borescope isnt made any more... WoW...
What does this video have to do with the subject line?
Sad that us customers have to check our own cars to keep mechanics honest. I guess thats the world we live in.
"I really love this flexible probe!"
"so does my nephew for some weird reason!"
Scotty; please tell people to get a OEM PCV valve, And if it has a grommet, change it. They get brittle and hard and that brand new valve will not work correctly.
A picture is worth a thousand dollars. 😂
I'm sure you'll be fine.
You made $35M for telling people for 10 years the same thing:
Honda/ Toyota good.
Everything else bad.
Especially GM/BMW.
He’s not wrong
Well, the fact that Toyota/Honda has remained "good" the past 10 years is quite substantial.
@@kiavaxxaskew try atleast 40 years kid
Another great video, Scotty...
Send in a oil sample to the laboratory for analazation which will analyze the materials and they will tell you where the problem is or are???
As an aircraft mechanic, I can say: Our digital flexible boroscope costs at least €150.000. It is very necessary for the GEn-X engine.
Not gonna ask why he likes the wiggly one so much
I've been watching scotty for a few years now. I can confidently say that if you tape Scott's mouth... I will be able to know what he is saying with his hands.
It figures that Scotty gets the last of the cheap borescopes worth buying immediately before the industry standards change to save overindulgent rich adult kid’s money so he can tell us how good they used to be
SCOTTY...YOU ARE A FLEXO-SCOPE!!!!
Scotty is the BOSS!!!!
Never knew Emporer Palpatine was a mechanic before he turned evil
It seems always the older technology is preferred by Scotty and many people. Just like the manual transmission.
Because we prefer the ability to physically look at a problem.
Okay. This is bent, broken..
With microprocessor controlled things. Even inappropriate voltage for a moment can cause you a world of trouble.
Lol automatic transmissions are old technology at this point lol
Also hes not too technilogically inclinded but makes fun of engineers for making cars the way they do.
Thank you, Scotty
My 02 trailblazer has 233k doesnt burn a drop of oil its my 1st gm car/truck and i was surprised
Hi where's the location of PCV valve on 2.2 icdti civic engine.thanks.
Love your videos bro, the camera dapstick idk probably spelt wrong but they most likely sent you the newest model yet to be released for promotional reasons, hell you deserve it check their shop in a few months.
So exactly how doea this fix an oil burning engine? It helps diagnose the problem...not fix it.
Wait Scotty with an actual helpful mechanic video?? He going back to his good videos?
Love your videos Scotty!!
Can you use that thing for a do it yourself colonoscopy?
Yes just use lube first unless you live on the wild side
🤔 Hey Scotty, you left out a possible self-administered colonscopy 😳🤣😂
What is engine service soon
5:38 Scotty’s RI garage is starting to get that “Houston” look.
This is awesome but where’s the free part? 😂
All about how to test and nothing about how to fix for free!
Scotty, out of curiosity, please tell us how you feel about the articulated camera scopes?
I got a bore scope that I use for my rifles, never thought about using it on my car.
Was a gift for Christmas that plugs into my phone and it seems to work well.
Looks like Imma have to make an upgrade, especially one that articulates.
Me with an 07 Camry that burns oil. 👀 Guess it's a common issue.
great video
You're very good.
A cylinder leakage test on automobiles engines is a lot better it has to be done on aircraft engines annual inspections or use to be?
