So, as I'm sure you gathered from the live comments, the real 'star' of Blind Faith was Steve Winwood. He had been the vocalist/keyboardist for The Spencer Davis Group previous to this. Check out Gimme Some Lovin next. That's his first hit and was recorded when Winwood was 19. He's 21 here. Then check out Traffic - his next group after Blind Faith. Amazing stuff. Keep the faith.

I hope Alex hops into the comments! Steve Winwood was a prodigy, joined Spencer Davis Group at 15, and he already had that voice. Then he was in Traffic, and then did Blind Faith for one album. He is one of the most beautiful voices in rock. The most unassuming rock GOD in the business. BRILLIANT on guitar and keyboards. And even better as a singer. He may be underrated in the press, but he is WORSHIPPED by Clapton and basically everyone else. His stage presence is like, a white shirt and jeans, "don't look at me." The song isn't about the chorus. It's a timeless yearning. That's why it's so personal for so many people, as you can see in the comments. Everyone has a story or knows someone who does. So so so happy you did this one. It's beloved by the greatest artists, and so many big names have covered it as a live song. I've been loving Stevie Winwood ever since he *was* Stevie....
Steve Winwood Vocals, Rick Gretsch Bass, Eric Clapton Lead Guitar and Ginger Baker Drums. A short lived super group in the late 60's and a very haunting song that touches on the times of drugs and over indulgences and not able to find their way back. A great song to bring the 60's to an end of an era.

In college a friend would borrow his roomates VW wagon or something (was it a VW?) and we would drive 45 minutes from college to Peakin Peak to ski when school was called off. Often we were the first ones down the slopes after lake effect dumped tons of snow. We had Low Spark and hash for the whole ride to the slope. And a boda bag with wine in it. Great times.
Steve Winwood is one of the greatest rock vocalists, musicians and songwriters!
Quick correction: Jeff Beck replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds in 1965. Jimmy Page became the Bassist in 1965then replaced Jeff Beck on lead guitar in 1966. When the other members quit in 1968 Jimmy replaced them with John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant and did a tour as the New Yardbirds before renaming themselves Led Zepppelin.
As for Steve (Stevie) Winwood, he is and was a musical prodigy. He joined The Spencer Davis Group at 14 after playing keyboard behind Muddy Waters, B. B. King, Howlin' Wolf and others when they toured the UK. He played on the Spencer Davis hits Keep On Runnin', I'm A Man, and Gimme Some Lovin', writing and singing the last two. Other groups he was in were Powerhouse (a very brief, 3 song duo with Eric Clapton), Traffic, Blind Faith, Go, and Ginger Baker's Air Force. Later hits as a solo artist include Back In The High Life Again and Roll With It.

The neat thing is, if you grew up in the 1980s znd heard 1980s Steve Winwood you think he is a great artist/piano player. But back in the day, he was also a great and underrated guitar player.

I don't think A&A realize a lot of musicians back in the day, jumped from group to group because they wanted to expand their musical experiences and abilities. Winwood is a classic example, which is why he's such a great artist. Blind Faith and Traffic touched on several genres, which made them so unique!

This is the third time you've reacted to Steve Winwood... he sang Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and played that organ you liked on Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Chile (on Patreon)... his career retrospective set is four discs of total sauce from the spencer davis group in the mid 60s to traffic to bind faith to more traffic to a dozen or so solo albums -- he's a giant.
I really want to emphasize this. When we (fans) first heard the lineup of the group Blind Faith, we did *NOT* go "Oh, here is Eric Clapton with his latest group of random musicians". Every performer in this band was a huge star in their own right. For me and my friends, the initial reaction was more like, "I'm sorry, but I cannot even imagine this much talent in a single group...". And given the previous releases from these artists, I'd also say we didn't have the slightest idea of what the record would sound like. We couldn't even guess, but we were confident it was going to be amazing.

"And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home" could have been a really bad lyric, but sang by Steve Winwood it is magically transformed into one of the best lines ever.

For me, the beauty of the song is not so much what it's "literally" about, rather that it's very "open" - in the sense that the concept of "can't find my way home" can apply to so many moments in life, and the song is about being lost in the search. You might (or might not) know what you are looking for, but even if you know, you can't find it. And that leads to his "confusion" in the performance, too. He doesn't "nail" the chorus because he's lost. And that's why no matter what age I am when I listen to this, it rings bells for me.

Aaron and David, you both hit it on the head about the chorus, the metaphor of searching for something and that ultimately the meaning is in in the eye of the beholder. I loved this song since I first heard it back in 1969; the haunting lyrics and vocal, along with the low key soothing instrumentation are perfection. Always in awe of the musical genius of these songwriters, they have such a gift. Also, a limitation of reaction videos is that some songs may warrant more than one listening in order to appreciate the song in its totality.

When a song called 'Can't find my way home' doesn't resolve in an expected, comfortable way... its probably a feature/intended not a bug/mistake. When it comes from a song writer like Winwood, its most certainly intentional. The whole song feels directionless, the meandering guitar lines certainly set that mood.

I think Badge was a sign of things to come had they not broken up. They were starting to get away from blues jams and write tight more pop oriented songs. Think George Harrison co-wrote it
The ONLY thing wrong with this song is that it's WAY too short! It could easily be twice as long and still be too short. You can just lose yourself in this song.
I can't imagine thinking anything wrong about this song!!! It has torn me up every time I heard it all my life...trust me,that's a lot of years...and I never had the album, never was a huge Blind Faith follower, yet THIS SONG speaks my heart in all ways. You guys need to listen to it through MY ears instead of your headphones. It's an S, whatever that is! Gentle vocals yet killer, like the sudden cymbal crash that just emphasizes the pain, as only Ginger Baker could....it sneaks up and bites you on the ass.

It's an ode to the lost times in life. I was never an addict, but was caught in the AIDS crisis in the 80's, friends dying around me and trying to care for them. The hopeless drive to go on nonetheless, without even knowing where you're heading, almost not daring to hope for salvation. This song speaks to the sense of hopeless plodding-on determination that still lies right under the surface of my daily reality.
I suspect that until you've known hard times and felt lost and directionless, you maybe can't know what this song is about.
For someone who struggles in many ways, this song hits home. For some reason it also resonated a bit about today's sad anniversary. I guess that what music does at times. Great job.

Saw Steve Windwood open for Tom Petty and The Heatbreakers about 5 years ago and he played this on the piano as a solo. You could hear a pin drop.
The splash cymbal tone and where it was in the mix is due to problems with digital transfers and what algorithms can do to destroy the tone and dynamics. I challenge you to go back and listen to an original analog to vinyl.copy and it will teach you something about the drawbacks of digital.

@@tommathews3964 well, it's a time like this where it's noticed that you can go back to original print to see what can happen, sometimes antiquated DAC technology, other times, the algorithm has carved off some transient lower mid tones off another instrument and left this cymbal naked and emphasized nasty 13k while carving off the 8-10k overtones and you get a trashcan lid in the middle of a chill song.
And lose the headphones for some good speakers. Not all music does well on phones.

I think sometimes when you dive into the lyrics you can't see the Forest for the trees. This is supposed to evoke a feeling, of being lost and trying to find redemption, and it does. It is gospel.

What I found amazing about Steve Winwood is that he has always been a believer. He sings in a choir in his homeland. So you touched upon something that I believe is correct. A lot of believers got into drugs, rock scene, etc. They got lost in that ... but many have found their way home. I don't know if Steve was feeling a bit lost at the time he wrote this. Would be nice to hear him comment on it
In my top 5 treasured albums of all times. I still throw this on when i'm driving. Winwood is always touching our spirits. He did a great solo comeback album. Higher Love was the hit track but the album is full of good music.

I, for one, am very glad the refrain "I can't find my way back home" stays ethereal and not more hook-like. I think it speaks to the theme of the song. The point is that he is not in control but is lost. Winwood's voice is haunting. More Traffic please!

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, on vocals, were so good together. When the bands Cream and Traffic split this band was formed from members of the two previous bands. Clapton and Ginger Baker, on drums, came over from Cream. Steve Winwood and Rich Grech, on bass, came over from Traffic. This band didn't" stay together very long but they put out some incredible music. I would recommend diving into more Traffic if you like Steve Winwood "s vocals. Suggest you check out "LOw Spark on High Heel Boys".
I did not know Rick Grech had played with Traffic. I thought Grech came over from a band called Family. I thought Traffic was composed of Winwood, Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi with Dave Mason coming in and out of the band.
CC you are correct , Ric was in Family not Traffic.
@@CC-Wulf Grech was the bassist on the "Low Spark" album. Their later work included a revolving ensemble but Wood, Capaldi and Winwood were the core. Mason never fully fit.
It's amazing how many great singers, guitar players, bass players and drummers came out of the 1960s.

One thought about reacting to songs from this era is albums were designed to be heard in their entirety. Plucking a single song can be the difference between savoring a chocolate chip cookie versus choking on a spoonful of flour.
This is a really good point. Which is not to say you have to react to entire albums every time you want to listen to a song from this era--just know that, when you react to stuff from this time period, there's probably quite a bit of missing context.
Honestly, listening to music in the 60s, 70s, and even the early 80s was such a fundamentally different experience than what we do now--socially, culturally, practically, technologically--that it's almost impossible to convey if you didn't experience it directly.
(That's not a value judgement, by the way. I'm sure lots of other people over 40 will disagree with me when I say I don't think that way of listening to music is actually BETTER than the way we listen to music today. It's just different.)
Winwood is super talented! He's a multi-instrumentalist and amazing songwriter, he was in the Spencer Davis Group at only 14yo with songs "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man" which are worth checking out, but then he went to the band Traffic which you should definitely check out the songs "Empty Pages" "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" "Feelin' Alright" "Light Up or Leave Me Alone". Also check out more Blind Faith songs like "Presence of the Lord" and y'know.. the rest of the album lol
I remember Steve Winwood when he was still Stevie Winwood. He was like 16 when he started. Delaney and Bonnie (and friends) also included Clapton. Excelent technical guitar playing in this song. Haunting vocals, beautiful song. Star status for this band. A+ in my opinion. You need to listen to it again, that chorus has stuck with me for 40+ years. He is lost in a haze of drugs and finding his way home is incomprehensible. I like the splash because that is water in his face to wake him up from his drug induced haze. This song was a mantra for us kids who grew up in the 60s and 70s in the drug infused lifestyle of the youth. Thanks for reacting to this one.
I totally agree with your take on this Sherry. I love watching the old performances that all of these guys did. You can see how high they were. Lol Especially where Eric Clapton during 'Strange Brew" looking out of his mind. It makes me chuckle. But the vibes are unreal and the chemistry they all had with each other always felt like it was other worldly.
What is to me a funny kind of tidbit is that the Carpenter's song Superstar is really a Delaney and Bonnie song, and the original title is "Groupie (Superstar)". I imagine Richard Carpenter picked the song since he found other songs for them?
Wikipedia reads: in 1969 the song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell with a songwriting credit also given to Delaney Bramlett...Richard changed a lyric in the second verse from "And I can hardly wait/To sleep with you again" to the somewhat less suggestive "And I can hardly wait/To be with you again."...The track was finished in one take.

@@sheilaswegler4859 Actually Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell wrote it but it was credited to both of them and Delaney Bramlett as well. I heard her sing it about 10 years ago at a fundraiser I had attended and though her voice was a bit craggy from age and illness, she sang that song with such a passion that even the band members were crying. She really moved me with that song. I was sad when I learned she had died a couple of years later. Bonnie sang this song at Leon Russell's funeral and everyone totally lost it.
i loved delaney and bonnie so much that i named my daughter delaney. :) and i named my son connor, there's some inner alliteration happening there. so you take those guys and you throw leon russell into the mix with mad dogs and englishmen and you had this cauldron of crazy excellence just perolating. it was bands like this that kept me going throughout the '70s as disco ravaged the landscaped, lol.

One of the most impeccable songs of all time. The line “I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home” sung to us back in the 70s even if it doesn’t mean what we took it to mean back then. I’m just the opposite, that line is the most memorable to me. Nice vid guys!

"Steve Winwood" keys guitar and lead vocals! He still performs it now. He's a phenomenal lead player. That chorus was to be forlorn whole point of the song.
"Can't Find My Way Home" an Acoustical Piece pretty much laid back & mellow. The next 3 Tracks R definitely worth Reacting to. "Sea Of Joy" is a Banger

Remember when you did "I'm a Man" by Chicago? Steve Winwood, lead singer of Blind Faith, was in the Spencer Davis Group. Wrote the song and originally sang it.
And the Spencer Davis version is sooooooo much better. IMO :)

Alex, the drummer for Blind Faith was Ginger Baker, who was the drummer for Cream. Cream did the song White Room that you reviewed a while ago.
This song is hauntingly good and just like you said it will grow on you over the years. That guitar is just magically soothing, along with his incredible voice
You are looking at the song from the modern perspective of "The War On Drugs" and "Just Say No" and the conversation about addiction. But you have to erase those perspectives if you're going to look at the songs of the 60s & 70s - a time when people sought to use drugs to reach spiritually higher. They weren't "fighting addiction", there wasn't even the discussion that they might be addicted. Back then the saying was "Better Living Through Chemistry!". The idea was to BE "Lost In The Sauce" all the time for some people - ESPECIALLY Rock Musicians. They felt if freed up their creativity.
Revisionists always look at the past from the eyes of the present. You have the right idea.

I had heard this song many times, and it was just another song to me. When I went to a college Christian outdoor show, and they played this in a video, complete with lyrics. I was pretty lost and confused at the time, and it really hit me hard. I wanted to go home so badly, but there was no place to go home to. I felt I was truly alone. Then they played 'In the Presence of the Lord'. I learned that hippies could believe, and that with a bit of trust, things would be all right. I had just taken the first steps of a lifelong journey. Thanks for doing what you do.

Steve Winwood had the most relaxed, cool, laid back swag of any rock star from Spencer Davis to Traffic to Blind Faith to his solo career, even if he went a little Hollywood. Has no peer.

I'm really tired of "it's about drugs" being the goto explanation for songs.. sure sometimes it really is but this song is more deep than just coming down from a trip
Whatever it may have been written about, everyone takes it their own way. That's what makes it great.
Most of us got loaded then and the “go to” on any song lyrics that are open to interpretation was, “It’s about drugs.” I prefer lyrics that are a bit ambiguous. It allows the listener to bring their own interpretation making the song more meaningful to THEM.... and a pox on songwriters who, when asked, will outright say what their song’s lyrics mean.
@@Rick_Hoppe I was definitely "expanding my mind" back then too.. this is one of those songs that has changed meaning as I grow older and I suspect that gives credit to its creator.
I don't think it's about an individual coming down from a trip so much as the entire counter culture reigning itself back in after the acid explosion of 67. Unfortunately, too many ended up trading LSD for heroin.

Actually, Cream was the first supergroup, being "the cream of the crop", with the three of them having spent time together either with the Bluesbreakers or the Graham Bonds Organization.

Actually, the FIRST to be called a SUPERGROUP. Was there and done that. Remember it all quite well Ironically, Cream's Farewell concert at the Garden and about a year or so later Blind Faiths single night concert on Thanksgiving night, also at the Garden.
Traffic was legendary- Dave Mason, Jim Capaldi; Chris Wood....and then add Steve Winwood...anything they did.

I totally get what you meant about the session musicians and how pro's can just hit that "groove" where everything is clicking and the music just seems to transcend everything. Watched a video of Keith Richards and Ron Woods just picking up their guitars and noodling around and then it just started to coalesce and holy SHIT did they jam!

Steve Winwood had his first No. 1 single when he was 17, three years before this. This band had so much horsepower LIFE magazine did a multi-page article on the supergroups of this era, complete with handy flowchart.

I saw Steve Winwood live in Montreal (Canada) a few years ago, and about the same year saw Paul McCarney live. These musicians are so relaxed when they perform and keep switching instruments almost every song (cords, keyboards), it looks like they are in their living room walking around all nice and mellow. Steve Winwood never misses a key or a beat, this is how you should picture him when he performs. Check out the Clapton/Winwood 2008 live from Madison Square Garden concert, it will blow your mind.

Well, just about 2 hours to go before Andy and Alex react to an epic song composed by Steve Winwood. Steve and Eric Clapton combined members of their former bands Cream and Traffic to create Blind faith.(Ginger Baker on drums and Ric Grech on bass). The self titled album was made in 69. The band broke up unfortunately after only one tour. What a collaboration. The decadent song " Can't find my way home" will certainly caress the ears of our reactors. Funny thing is none of them wanted Ginger Baker to be the drummer and didn't tell him about the band. Then he showed up 1st day of practice out of the blue and they were too scared to tell him to go away.
After my divorce this song took on a different and deeper meaning. Missing my son and my wife and literally not be able to "go home" brought new meaning to this song for me.

It was done so many years after Stevie and Eric were in blind faith, and there is such a love between the two guys and so much memory in the way they look at each other and how they perform the song it's going to make you cry.
