Originally from the 1969 album, " Blind Faith", their only album while remaining together for a year. Written and sung by Winwood, the band has created a legacy that lasts to this day, largely due to this song. Clapton's style of playing the guitar gave this song a beautiful unique sound. Rumored to be about friends he had lost due to drugs, the guitars perhaps remain somber to show Winwood's pain. Beautiful to hear this more recent version showing they still mesh musically perfectly. Great time in music. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and David. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Steve is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, producer. He did everything for his solo album Arc Of A Diver. From Wiki: "Steve Winwood - lead and backing vocals, Prophet-5, Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80, Hammond B3 organ, Steinway piano, Ovation acoustic guitar, Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, Ibanez mandolin, bass guitar, Multimoog (also used for keyboard fretless bass), Hayman and Ludwig drums, Linn LM-1 programming, percussion, producer, engineer, mixing." Keep On Running was Spencer Davis Group's first hit in the UK and Steve was singing lead at 17. Check out the video from 1966! He's also playing guitar on that one. He's a musical prodigy, learning several instruments as a very young child (4-5 years old).
Thanks for stealing my thunder and saving me from typing all the details. One question: "Keep on Running"? Do you mean "Gimme Some Lovin'" (which rhymes)? I was in 7th or 8th grade when that one exploded into the U.S. from Spencer Davis Group, and nobody who I know who was around then would say it wasn't Steve Winwood's breakout hit in the U.S. with the SDG. "Can't find My Way Home" is usually considered the standout track from Blind Faith's only album back in 1969 = Clapton and Ginger Baker from the Cream breakup, Winwood post-Traffic, and Rich Gresch on bass. One more nugget of ancien Boomer memory if it serves correctly, Traffic's later album "Low Spark of High Heel Boys" was I believe recorded after the departure of guitarist Dave Mason. Winwood played almost every instrumental track on that LP with the addition mainly of traffic's woodwind and brass player Chris Wood? Stevie may have even played drums on that album along with guitar and most everything else.
Yes, he has such a stellar career! I definitely mean Keep On Running! People in the US seem to not know that one and only know the two others that were big hits over here in the US. It was their first hit in the UK- came out in 1965 making him 16 I believe when they recorded it. We didn't discover them until they did Gimme Some Lovin' and/or I'm A Man in 1967. Everyone recommends those two and they're fantastic but I prefer Keep On Running. Seriously, check out that video! He's incredible :) It's black and white, and he's singing and playing guitar. Evidently he started learning to play instruments at the age of 4!@@kikovazquez7277
Steve is a instrumental genius, playing a long, long list of different instruments. And yes, a fantastic guitar player. When one is invited to join Clapton at his Crossroads Festival, and you're on stage with Clapton and he hangs back and lets you take the stage, guitar in hand, you know you are an excellent guitar player. Now you need to watch Steve and Eric do "Dear Mr. Fantasy" at Eric's Crossroads Festival. Steve really shows his guitar chops on that tune!!! Since there are two different versions of Steve and Eric and "Mr. Fantasy" at the Crossroads Festival, I've put the link here for the one where Steve really lets it out on guitar... ua-cam.com/video/fmoL-qXAr5o/v-deo.htmlsi=p7nC0psDydNkI3EJ
Clapton's subtle complimentary addition is fantastic ! This song rings out in the Vietnam debacle that dominated a generation that played and loved the music that was inspirational then.
Winwood was always an excellent Guitar player, as well as Piano and Organ. He'll play Bass as well if need be. Winwood is playing most of the Instruments on the "John Barleycorn..." album, although Capaldi and Wood obviously chip in throughout. "Stranger to Himself" is pretty much just Stevie on all Instruments. Listen to his solos on "Every Mothers Son" or "Many a Mile to Freedom", hes not messing around!
Steve played every instrument as well as produced, mixed and engineered his album Arc Of A Diver. "Steve Winwood - lead and backing vocals, Prophet-5, Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80, Hammond B3 organ, Steinway piano, Ovation acoustic guitar, Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, Ibanez mandolin, bass guitar, Multimoog (also used for keyboard fretless bass), Hayman and Ludwig drums, Linn LM-1 programming, percussion, producer, engineer, mixing"
Loved it - I think my favorite version however is Steve solo on his acoustic guitar in front of his fireplace. I believe I saw it on here Harry, regardless it's now in my favorites playlist.
As others have mentioned, the original by Blind Faith (that included both Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood) is an absolute MUST as it features spectacular acoustic guitars to go with Steve's amazing voice.
This song was first recorded by super group Blind Faith which lasted for a few months during 1969. It consisted of Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ric Grech and Ginger Baker. Despite only lasting for a few months the band did release an album and did a summer tour. I guess you could say this is their most famous song covered by many.
So this performance is from the Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2007 Clapton had done a number of these. I loved the way Winwood had this smile on his face and nodded saying 'we killed it' A young Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhill doing Guitar fills. This version is better IMO that the original from 1969. At this same show Winwood did a version of 'Dear Mr Fantasy' Where he is playing guitar with out the other guitar playing his solo work is fantastic, you will be amazed. ua-cam.com/video/fmoL-qXAr5o/v-deo.html
I know you did a reaction to Blind Faith's "Do What You Like". Now, you MUST do one for the original version of this song from the same album. This live version IS absolutely stunning, and I don't even know how many times I've watched it! But ya just gotta do the OG!
Steve Winwood was playing guitar at age of 5 or so.... seems highly doubtful that Eric Clapton got him to 'come out from behind the keyboard and play guitar.' Steve was a musical prodigy, playing several instruments as a very young child.
The way it was written sounded like Steve was unsure of himself and could easily imply thatEric Clapton had a hand in it. They were in a band together once?! Wow. LMAO. Eric joined a band just so he could play with Steve lol@@dougww1ectebow
Though primarily a guitarist, keyboard player, and vocalist prominent for his distinctive, soulful high tenor voice, Steve Winwood plays other instruments proficiently, including drums, mandolin, bass, and saxophone. He is an immensely talented musician to say the least........
For Arc Of A Diver album, he did it all! 'Steve Winwood - lead and backing vocals, Prophet-5, Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80, Hammond B3 organ, Steinway piano, Ovation acoustic guitar, Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, Ibanez mandolin, bass guitar, Multimoog (also used for keyboard fretless bass), Hayman and Ludwig drums, Linn LM-1 programming, percussion, producer, engineer, mixing'
Steve Winwood is a very unique person, as to where he excels at several different arts. He is an incredible singer, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboard player to name a few!! Also, how great are these two that Derek Trucks is simply playing a casual rhythm guitar!!
Steve is an excellent guitarist. You should check out his live version of Dear Mister Fantasy, I think at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction for Traffic. He does a fantastic guitar solo on that.
Both of these men are not only good, longtime friends, but both are brothers in Jesus Christ. I guess that makes them my brothers as well. Thanks HARI God Bless you too!
Dragged my wife to the O2 Arena while in London to see where the Blind Faith reunion happened. His guitar during that show was astonishing .. and yes, everyone associates him with keyboards.
Harri, in case you didn't notice, Derek Trucks was on guitar to Winwood's right opposite Clapton. I believe this must have been at a celebration of the guitar concert that Clapton was instrumental (pun intended) in putting together.
Harri, check out Blind Faith- "Sea of Joy". Great song and of course both of these legends. You should also check out "John Barleycorn Must Die" a song by Traffic which is another iteration of Winwood. That album he plays many of the instruments including lead and acoustic guitars!
This was terrific and I love your reaction, but check out them introducing this song live in 1969... I think it's at Hyde Park in London. They're so YOUNG and so talented. Just amazing.
Of course Stevie Winwood was playing guitar all the time. I was in a concert of Traffic in 1974, in Germany, where Stevie played most of the time guitar and just not organ then. And this is an old song of Blind Faith and Stevie and Eric, also Ginger Baker were the core of this short-term band Blind Faith in 1969/1970.
there is live video of clapton and winwood doing hendrix VOODOO CHILE.....windwood on organ clapton on guitar......windwood played on the original recording....about 10 minutes of jaw dropping music
If you reacted to the Traffic song "Dear Mr. Fantasy" then you've heard Winwood's guitar playing before. If you haven't reacted to it then you've missed a treat.
I usually say that studo versions are the way to go and this is no exception. This isn't bad but it's not great unless you're already familiar with the song.
Winwood is one of the most underrated guitarist in rock. His play on Dear Mr Fantasy is classic.
Winwood is what is called a musical prodigy
Steve is a great guitarist
Don’t forget
Derek trucks and Doyle Bramhall
Gotta hear his acoustic version by himself awesome! Also, Derek Trucks playing there in the background!! Great guitarists!!
Clapton once said he always felt he had to be on top form when he played with Steve, because Winwood was such an effortlessly good guitarist.
There's a video online of Steve Winwood at age 15 singing like Ray Charles. He is a prodigy.
That performance blew my mind!
'Nobody Loves/Knows You When You're Down And Out'. A phenomenal reading from a 15-year -old Steve!
Steve Winwood produced a masterpiece of an album, Arc Of A Diver, where he played every instrument and wrote every song. Simply put, he is genius.

There is a video of a live performance of this song from Hyde Park in 1969.
Steve is a musician’s musician, he can play anything.
Clapton and Winwood always sound so great together. They complement each other perfectly.

Pretty sure Clapton has said one of the main influences on him switching from Gibson to Fender was that Winwood played one

Eric Clapton joined a band just to be with Steve Winwood. lol!

That's right! Blind Faith. Well All Right!!
It was definitely all right! :)@@brendamilloy2557
The Buddy Holly tune!!
This song has always been one of the ultimate groove songs. Always liked blind faith.
From their day's in Blind Faith. The best 1yr band in history. 😆
Clapton's subtle complimentary addition is fantastic ! This song rings out in the Vietnam debacle that dominated a generation that played and loved the music that was inspirational then.

Best version of the song hands down, it's on his own channel.
Yeah, like everyone is pointing out, “Dear Mr. Fantasy” is where you’ll see him shine on guitar.
As others have mentioned, the original by Blind Faith (that included both Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood) is an absolute MUST as it features spectacular acoustic guitars to go with Steve's amazing voice.

On Night Train Steve plays every instrument.
Steve was playing guitar on the first Traffic lp in 1967.
Classic tune. Steve Winwood. Blind Faith was a super group with Clapton and WInwood. This song was born during the Blind Faith era
My desert island song. This is perfection.
A great live version of their Blind Faith song that was so great in the day.
So this performance is from the Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2007 Clapton had done a number of these. Windwood... from 1969 "Can't Find My Way Home" onward... truly epic!
EC was the one who invited Winwood to come out from behind the keyboard and play guitar. He's equally good if not better on guitar as he is on keys.
Steve Winwood was playing guitar at age of 5 or so.... seems highly doubtful that Eric Clapton got him to 'come out from behind the keyboard and play guitar.' Steve was a musical prodigy, playing several instruments as a very young child.
I didn't say he taught him, just encouraged him to play more guitar. If you recall, they were in a band together once.@@lauraallen55
The way it was written sounded like Steve was unsure of himself and could easily imply thatEric Clapton had a hand in it.
They were in a band together once?! Wow. LMAO. Eric joined a band just so he could play with Steve lol@@dougww1ectebow

Stevie is a multitalented multi instrumental artist!
The original studio version of this is from Steve and Eric's only album together : Blind Faith.

Yes, studio version is transcendent!
Eric holding down the groove on rhythm!
Steve Winwood is a very unique person, as to where he excels at several different arts. He is an incredible singer, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboard player to name a few!!
Also, how great are these two that Derek Trucks is simply playing a casual rhythm guitar!!
Steve Winwood can jam out on guitar. Mr Fantasy is a decent example.
Also playing with them is the great Derrick Trucks from the Allman Brothers
Just laughing about that. We need someone to strum chords .. oh, yes he'll do.
Steve is an excellent guitarist. You should check out his live version of Dear Mister Fantasy, I think at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction for Traffic. He does a fantastic guitar solo on that.
He was a musical genius! He wrote this song when he was about 16!
Blind Faith, yes❤
Both of these men are not only good, longtime friends, but both are brothers in Jesus Christ. I guess that makes them my brothers as well.
Thanks HARI
God Bless you too!
I love these two together. I saw Eric in a interview and they are planning something for 2024!
Unbelievable talent on that stage
That song is actually iconic.
Winwood can shred on guitar. Don’t know if noticed, but that is Derek trucks on slide guitar.
Steve Winwood not only has a great voice, he plays about 23 different instruments, and excels at all of them.
He's a freaking musical genius.
Fantastic version Harri .
Timeless brilliance never gets old .
From the same concert, Crossroads 2007, watch Dear Mr Fantasy by Winwood. He is an excellent guitar player.
Great song!!!
Dragged my wife to the O2 Arena while in London to see where the Blind Faith reunion happened. His guitar during that show was astonishing .. and yes, everyone associates him with keyboards.
Steve Winwood is a great guitarist which often goes unrecognized by many people.
Always wondered if my two favorite rock geniuses, Winwood and John Paul Johns ever worked together.
Harri, in case you didn't notice, Derek Trucks was on guitar to Winwood's right opposite Clapton. I believe this must have been at a celebration of the guitar concert that Clapton was instrumental (pun intended) in putting together.
Two of the best!
great
Harri, check out Blind Faith- "Sea of Joy". Great song and of course both of these legends. You should also check out "John Barleycorn Must Die" a song by Traffic which is another iteration of Winwood. That album he plays many of the instruments including lead and acoustic guitars!
Yes Harri, Steve is a top rated guitarist. He also plays mandolin and who knows what else.
This was terrific and I love your reaction, but check out them introducing this song live in 1969... I think it's at Hyde Park in London. They're so YOUNG and so talented. Just amazing.
Steve's acoustic guitar version of "John Barleycorn Must Die", while quite disturbing, is a great performance.
Gorgeous .ear candy
Wow, where do you find these great collaborations. Thanks.
You should see him playing the guitar on dear Mr fantasy crossroads 2007 live 🎸🎶
From same performance, Dear Mr Fantasy, Steve has a 6 minute solo.
Steve on guitar....same concert the song is "dear mr fantasy".
They're Dear Mr Fantasy Live is a must see Harry. , from same performance, at Crossroads festival.
Of course Stevie Winwood was playing guitar all the time. I was in a concert of Traffic in 1974, in Germany, where Stevie played most of the time guitar and just not organ then. Lovely ❤
If you want to hear Winwoods guitar soar, try Dear Mr Fantasy - Crossroads 2007 (same concert) for an alltime solo.
there is live video of clapton and winwood doing hendrix VOODOO CHILE.....windwood on organ clapton on guitar......windwood played on the original recording....about 10 minutes of jaw dropping music
Stevie on the original as well I,think.
I thought the same thing about Greg Allman. All the videos I’ve seen for years, they’re behind keyboards.
You have Derek Trucks there too. And Doyle Bramhall II or II, if I spelled his name right. Thanks.
If you reacted to the Traffic song "Dear Mr. Fantasy" then you've heard Winwood's guitar playing before. If you haven't reacted to it then you've missed a treat.
Steve also happens to be one of the greatest guitar players of all time.. as well as everything else 🙄😂
Derek!
There is a longer version of this performance.Same concert look it Steve Jams on guitar
Sorry Mr Fantasy is the song I meant to say to watch he jams like Clapton
I usually say that studo versions are the way to go and this is no exception. This isn't bad but it's not great unless you're already familiar with the song.
