This review shows us why competition is great. Without TCL and Hisense, Samsung might have gotten away with a price like this. But because we now have much lowered priced alternatives, this product is in a bad place price-wise and Samsung will probably be forced to adjust. This is a sign of a healthy market. I'm looking forward to how the 98+ tv space will evolve, even if I almost certainly won't buy one of those for quite a while.

    • @Caoimhin777

TCL & Hisense are heavily subsidized & partially owned by the Chinese government. This gives them a substantial unfair advantage in pricing over their non-Chinese counterparts. I definitely wouldn’t call that a healthy & fair market.

The trend is going towards huge tvs so I'd expect every brand to upgrade factories for larger sizes which would lead to the price to drop

Don't forget that PRC is heavily involved and there really is no competition

When the South Korean and “west” started producing top end products in China, they just made the biggest mistake and they basically sold their secrets. Now, the Chinese grew so massively in the car and tech industry, that they are as good or better than the best.

    • @timeliebe
      @timeliebe 2 місяці тому

@@Pallidus_Rider- oh, no, there's competition! It's just… Different because you're competing for the state rather than the market. If you think there's no competition between brands in China, then you're not paying attention to most stories about Chinese products.
If you mean that the Chinese can undercut our own costs because those corporations state favors have an edge that our privatized industry doesn't? There you may have a point, but the thing is we wouldn't have good modestly priced televisions if we had to rely on the greed of the US corporation .

I have the 75 QN90B and the issue you mentioned is very real and has happened to me too. Watch a Formula 1 race with the max brightness settings and you'll see even greater of these patches of backlight bleed almost everywhere on the race track. I've been trying to fix this and the only solution I found was to enable HDR. The processing I'd better on HDR. In SDR these issues are very high. I hope Samsung takes note of this and fixes it for everyone.

I’m loving the TCL 98” QM851G. I’m done with Samsung after the years of not having Dolby vision support and unnecessarily high price compared to TCL now. It’s too bad Sony doesn’t have a new 2024 98” model yet.

From 1 to 10. How to you rate the TCL?

@98 QM851G pretty fantastic it should be a solid 9 after the latest firmware update going OTA public in the next 2 weeks. No need to pay Samsung pricing and miss out on Dolby Vision. Android TV has better apps as well even though I mainly use my Apple TV. CEC remote control commands work better with TCL.

I think people put too much on the Dolby Vision. I find the HDR 10 pro is very good. not a good reason not to buy a TV because it does not support DV!

@@marcprobin1659 I’m happy to have both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Plus TCL has full Apple HomeKit support unlike Samsung. TCL has Android TV more compatible and polished apps than Tizen OS of Samsung. I remember the Samsung Paramount TV plus app being a POS not playing videos even after a reinstall.

The 85”/98” tcl qm8 is just a little different than the 75” and below from all the research ive done. Not a huge believer in Dolby vision, but what almost no one seems to mention.. the qm8 has ALL of the audio options like dts-X, etc. 🎉

Another great review Caleb, but a quick question for you. I'm interested in a 98-inch TV. Had a look at the Sony 98", in the curry store and the picture looked very good until you looked at the newer TVs and the brightness difference was tremendous, I know brightness is not everything but it did make a big difference, I know when you get the TV by itself in your own room you would forget about the brightness of other TVs, but of all the 98 inch TVs out there. Do you recommend the Sony over them or do you prefer something else? Thank you!

The Sony on sale for half the price at $5K is excellent. We bought one for our home theater room in August where it’s pretty much dedicated to movies both on streaming and 4K disc, and while it’s not quite as great as our large Sony OLED in the family room, it still is excellent. At $5K you’re also not completely all-in on price where if something spectacular comes out in two years I wouldn’t feel bad about swapping it to a new model.

My very first flat-screen TV was a 46 inch (or was it 48? Can’t remember now!) Samsung, their first 1080P TV. It was definitely a premium TV and, other than some DSE, was excellent. Until it broke (power supply) and would have cost more to fix it than it was now worth. So I ended up buying another Samsung, this time 4K at 55 inches, not nearly as high end as my original Samsung. The DSE was even worse and then some blob started appearing in the center of the screen which was especially noticeable in dark, atmospheric scenes. I also bought two more smaller Samsung TVs for the bedrooms, which were just ok, and also suffered from DSE. After three not so great TVs, particularly the 55 incher, I decided not to buy Samsung TVs anymore.
I think this is a really well-done and honest review. I appreciate that Caleb was trying to be fair in the pop-in by bringing up all the positive premium features. I liked almost every minute of this review. If I were in the market for a huge TV, which I probably never will be, I would not want one with that weird haloing thing (no matter how infrequently it occurs) at that price. There are other TVs that don’t have that weird thing that are much better-priced.

As an owner of Samsung tvs since 2005 (Loyal Sony owner from 92'- 2004), I can honestly say that there's no excuse worth a three times the retail price of a competing similar product.
I own a QN 90 A 85", and will probably purchase a new 98" or 100" in the spring ( tax return money). It won't be a Samsung QN90D. My hard earned money will go to the TCL QM851G or Hisence U8N. I'll risk their perceived lower quality at a cost of $3k, instead of trusting that a Samsung at $10k will outlast their competition by three times.

I haven't shopped for a TV in a while, but was surprised when I looked it up that Samsung is still the most popular TV brand in the US. It goes against my anecdotal evidence since I go shopping at Walmart most weekends, and most of the time I see folks walking out of the store with Hisense or TCL.

    • @vikingsfan2218

They're the only brand that seems to be competitive in every section of the market. They sell WOLEDs, QD-OLEDs, mini-LEDs, regular LEDs, glossy screens, matte screens, etc. And they do so at every panel size and price tier. I don't think any other brand can compete with Samsung's sheer breadth of TV offerings. And unlike most brands, Samsung has a division that produces panels, so no need to buy them from external distributors. Giving them more financial leeway to keep pumping out TVs
Also, I don't know if the average person is buying their TV from Walmart. Majority of people I see on the internet are getting their TVs from either Best Buy or Costco

Thank you so much for the honest and informative review. As I've said in another comment, is TV's worth about five grand and I would probably consider it more at that price. But the 85 in is a far better deal at less than $2,000 right now. I realized that there's a big difference between a 98-in and a 85-in, but since the largest TV I have in my house is 65 in. To be honest, I don't know if I would miss it or not since I don't have it to begin with. Personally, I don't think going from a 65-in to a 75 in is worth it, but an 85-in at a third of the price of the '98-in. I think I would do it considering it's the same model.

Would love to see Andrew Robinson or DT review a 65 or 75 of the QN90D - for other TVs, you're reviewing "normal" sizes - but for this Samsung, you're reviewing this monstrous 98" size that very few people will actually purchase. I have the 75" and this "shadow" problem around moving people simply does not happen, ever -- not on SD/low-res content, not on HD/UHD content -- just zero. Ditto the stuttering on panning shots.

Exactly my view.. I am thinking of buying the rightly priced ($1650) 85 inch QN90D and was looking fwd to a normal review after the elaborate unboxing . But this review was so hyper focused on the absurd cost of the 98” inch and every feature/flaw was presented in that light. Very few waiting for this video to drop are even remotely thinking of buying the 98 inch at $10k. Who is this video even meant for . lol . It’s just nonstop repetition that Hisense / tcl is better value. He already told that when unboxing . It doesn’t help increase the credibility when Hisense was their sponsor for the latest “you asked”

Would you go to last years G3 for a discount? Or do you think the A11 chip and better brightness is worth an extra 1k for the G4. I’m coming from an LG E6 (glas back panel) still works great but I want larger. I do like the inky black reminiscent of old plasmas. My fear tho is the the new brightness of the G4 will wash out the image and won’t be as rich. Plus. Fun fact is that the G3 was the last year LG did ATSC 3.0 next gen tuners in their TV’s standard. which I’m upset about as I watch antenna TV. All that said. I’m debating G3 or G4 83”. Is the 83”G3 non MLA a big enough deal to go G4 How bright is G4? Will it wash an image out? Thank you for your help. I dig ur videos.
Sidebar, heard form a Best Buy employee that the 4 series has issues. He said he’s replaced 3 panels since they’ve been up in the store. Think they were the B&C tho, smaller sizes. Heard anything about that?

Just think about all those AA or AAA batteries you’ll be saving over the years looking amount of like $12 or $14 over a 10 year period. Would you rather have an extra 8000 today or save $12-$14 and have a better power supply so the power remote. I think the answer is obvious Samsung all the way.

Was a few years until I even saw HDTV on it (via OTA PBS channel via my PC). But don't think I'd pay more than 5k today for a massive set. No justification for this to be so expensive relative to the other great LED options.

I wonder what a comparison to the 98" X90L would yield. Given your review of the 65", and what FOMO, Andrew Robinson, and other say about the Sony Processing, I think it might be the best premium value proposition in the 98" size. I've seen it next to some Samsungs, and LG's, and I'm always really impressed with the Sony. You can catch it for $800 more than the QM851 and that seems like a really good value proposition for a Premium Product.

I didn’t have to get to the end to decide it wasn’t “premium” enough to me to justify the price. It you talked about incredible picture quality, or a standard warranty with 3-4 years of in home service then I might think that it was worth it.
A 98” TV is about as large as I can fit into my current space, so past 98 it won’t work. I am going to replace a TCL 75” 825 from 3-4 years ago, I have been really pleased with the TCL and will move it but the thought of a 98” TV is hard to beat

I have the 75" and do not experience these issues. I've been actively looking for it also, given the Andrew Robinson review. My guess is this is either an issue processing for the 98" size or not enough dimming zones for that much screen real estate - something like that. Or just the limits of upscaling over such a vast size. Is that acceptable for the price of the 98? Who knows - that's on every individual consumer. But is it happening on more normal sized TVs? I don't see it. Doesn't mean it is not happening to anyone, but I'm not getting those things on mine.

Looks like 98" is the new 85". But there is the sinking feeling that the processors are stretched to perform at the level meant for 75" or 85". Now I'm looking into the future for a replacement for my Sony 75Z8H. It was purchased in 2020 during the Covid shortage. Available stock put me in the 8K market because it was priced that week at $3,899.99 The one disappointment with the 8K is upscaling. Only 4K discs look great. Too often there is a flicker from upscaling, I think. The Sony processor works hard to hold on to the image of herringbone or patterned images. It just flickers. Is this just the way the Sony 8K handles upscaling? Would it be wise to wait for more 98" 4Ks to come along? And why doesn't any major brand offer their best with their biggest? I'm thinking maybe 4K 85" high end will win my eye next time. But then, biggest is teasing me. What to do, what to do?

Audio is irrelevant because I have a true 7.1 surround sound system in my living room that kicks azz. Should I get the QN90C instead???? One thing about the Tizen operating system: I hate it. I never liked the way it organized the various streaming services, but it also has a very annoying glitch. I would be watching something, and suddenly, the screen would jump to Apple TV+, just as if someone had pressed a shortcut button. However, nobody was anywhere near the remote, not that it had an Apple TV shortcut, anyway. The picture would jump to Apple TV and then immediately jump back to the program I was watching. Updates haven't fixed this. I did eventually figure out how to stop it from jumping to Apple TV, I deleted every app on the TV. The only things left are my HDMI connections (My PC, my Roku, and my Blu-ray player) and Live TV. The 4th HDMI is connected to my soundbar. So now, about once a day, I will be watching something, and the TV will jump away as if someone pressed the home button and, a second later, jump back to what I was watching. If I do upgrade my TV, I wonder if I should give that one to my sister or give her the TV from my bedroom. Both of them are 82", but the one with the glitch is a QLED that costs $1,000 more than the TV in my bedroom.
There is another issue both my TVs have with my soundbars. They are all Samsung products. I originally connected both through a digital audio cable, but they both stopped connecting that way and started connecting via Bluetooth. I wouldn't care, but every few days, there would be a problem with the connection. Plus, it is my understanding that the soundbar should turn off and on automatically with the TV. That never seems to work despite the fact that they are all from the same manufacturer. So, I tried connecting via eArc with an HDMI cable. That worked when I set it up, but it was back to Bluetooth the next day.
I am ready to try a company other than Samsung for a while.

I just bought the 50 inch version of this tv and I noticed that in some scenes there’s also like a spotlight effect on the faces of people in darker scenes - where its like someone is holding a flash light to their face and then it stops. I have tried soooo many settings to stop this from happening. Im not sure if this is a display problem or a setting problem. Anyone else has this issue?

I own this particular 98 inch screen. It is perfect for watching sporting events and movies with friends. I have a recessed wall that this fits perfectly in. My concern is about the weight and about the fragility of the screen. The first one that was delivered was cracked and I got a new one that one had a non-functioning HDMI port, and the third one had dead pixels, Samsung eventually replaced that screen. This is simply a midpoint between really good flatscreen and increasingly better ultra short throw projectors. I will never buy another screen this big again. The next large screen will be a short throw projector once the technology surpasses OLED.

So basically, the intro tells us everything:
    - TLC/Hisense for $4000 is similar BUT
    - Samsung charges $6000 to give you more security, a promise that it will last longer (though NOT 150% longer as the price difference implies), a little more software (uninteresting) features and a little better sound (though still insufficient and you’ll have to buy a soundbar after all).
The Chinese are getting strong and fast, making decent products for a MUCH better price/performance ratio. If the difference is rather small, of course I’ll go Samsung/LG/Sony, but for a 100-150% uplift…no way Samsung.

I’ve seen this TV and honestly it’s not worth the cost difference of the QM8. I think the build quality, picture quality and sound are all better on QM8. Additionally, in my experience I’ve had more issues with Samsungs than any other TV, however, I have owned more Samsungs. I think the competition blows it away price for performance.
