- In 2020 we converted an ex-British Gas 2015 Volkswagen Caddy Maxi, turning it into a complete camper for weekend getaways. In this video we go through the stages of insulating the van, ply lining the van, painting the callipers, building a pull out bed and carpeting the walls (with a few trips thrown in).
Looking back over this video fills us with such a sense of pride - but also it's crazy to see just how much work goes into a van build. Thank you again to everyone who's followed us along this journey and given us all the advice and encouragement we've needed. We can't wait to get away in the van again and show you the trips we have! So in the meantime, here is our journey over the summer of 2020!
We spent a while researching the best methods for the conversion and thought we'd share our process to help others. If you want to convert a van on a budget then this is the video for you. In total I only spent around £300 for the conversion.

Thanks for watching! And I've never considered doing it for others. When you say basic level, how do you mean? Unfortunately I wouldn't have the time at the moment as I've got to much on. But costs you'd be looking at £300-£500 for materials and then a labour cost on top I guess. Sorry!
How did you manage to get this re-registered as a camper van? Thought it had to have a sink and fixed seating area etc in the UK ? Asking because i'm about to start a minibus conversion and the registration process looks a nightmare.
Yeah you're right I think it is a nightmare like you say. I haven't done that as mines still a van as has no camper qualities.
Very impressive workmanship there, applying the carpet can be a very tricky process, looks like you’ve done a proper tidy job on that, fair play 👍🏻

Hey! I’ve messaged on here previously as I’m about to buy a caddy to convert. Bit of a personal question but do you mind me asking how much you paid for this blue one and how many miles it had on the clock. I’m struggling to know whether to get an older cheaper one but risk all the miles it’s done or get a newer one but £££. Thanks mate

That one I picked up for £6000 with 45k miles. 2015 plate with the alloys and roof bars included. Van prices have gone up by 45% in the last year so you'll struggle to get anything at a reasonable price anymore.
If it's got higher miles but has had a good service history then you should be ok. If you're unsure use click mechanic to get someone to check it out before you make the purchase. Hope that helps!
Hi Will, The eBay link that you gave for your cushions doesn't work anymore, please can you share your wisdom on how to source affordable cushions for my pullout bed? Any help gratefully received!
Ah that's a shame. If you search mattressrus into ebay they might come up. I'd say the best way is to buy some foam like a double bed size and then cut it with a bread knivfe to the size you want. Is the cheapest way to do it. Ebay will be the cheapest place to buy decent foam. I got 2 inches normal and 1inch memory foam and it's great.

Great job ive converted a few vans each one got bigger T4 to a XLWB Boxer best mod is the Chinese diesel heater do like them caddy’s half tempted to change the car for one 🤔
ah that's awesome! I can't wait to take on a T5 and then something bigger in the future. Working my way up to it haha. I would deffo recommend getting a caddy, I've loved it. Happy to answer any questions you have, or even do a video about certain questions and show you any elements of the van.

is the temperature inside alright even without a heater?
Yh it's super warm, been away in the winter and never felt cold at tall. I could have put more insulation in as well.
