- How To DIY Program with a Computer. I mention a file at about 1:25. This is just a chirp image for some friends so we would all have the same frequencies on our radios. You can create your own and save it, or clone a friend's radio and save it.
Thanks for watching, and don't forget to Like and Subscribe to see the latest!
I highly recommend getting your ham radio license. Check out Hamstudy for free lessons and practice tests.

Oh thank god a how to that doesn't treat the audience like people who never saw a computer or radio before. You are worth a 10x your weight in gold.
Great video! Very useful.
Helpful. Thanks for the vid
Great Video. Thanks.
Just it to transmit to my other 2 meter radio on simplex mode so what am I doing wrong on reapeater settings?? Please read prior note from few minutes .thanks
Thank you so very much!
Helped me alot. Thanks!
How did you connect to the computer? Did you have a usb connector
good video
My Boafeng UV-82 is not transmitting on any channel do I need to to change setting on chirp?
Just followed your direction for uv82hp and radio ruined just tuck squelch open menu dont work how do I delete what you had me put in it. Is there a factory reset ?? Crazy
I don't have such ports and it keeps saying "wrong model", what should I do?
This is the best and cheap device
Thanks!
Will the tioradio work the same way programming it .
How about programing it manually
I am not familiar with the tioradio. If it can be done with chirp, I imagine it would be quite similar.
Hi Ryan i just got a baofeng UV-82hp for many reason as did my small group of ppl and while looking for some guidance on how to set it up i came across your video and realized that we live in the same town! i will say i wish i could pm you directly for some of questions but i guess one that i can ask publicly is.. like 2 way radios can i use the Baofeng as a 2 way radio on certain frequencies without getting a ham license? and is that what you have programed in for the FRS? I will say i am newbie to this and didn't realize that amount of leg work it takes to get set up but im trying to get there but have many questions. thanks for video
I always recommend getting the Ham Radio license. Check out hamstudy.org for free lessons.
what do i put in port/
Do i need to install the driver of uv82 to the computer before opening chirp ??
Mine worked without needing to install anything specific for the radio.
hi! we will go to a festival with a big group of friends. so far we will have 4 walkie talkies, can l join them with one of these?
That was the EASIEST chirp program video ever!!! Thank you
Is that an a larger battery that you have on the radio? where did you get it from
It's larger yes. Amazon and eBay have them for a little under $20.
Hello ,could you give me the download to replace factory file, thanks for the video.
cher ami , pourriez vous m'envoyer le software programming pour le Baofeng UV82 merci beaucoup par avance
Hello WROS900 here we’re did you download the file to replace the factory file thanks for the great video!
P.s. should I go back and do your video or do complete all reset is that really bad ??? Please read following settings and see if I have correct !!!
You just need to turn your shift off. Your radio is transmitting as though it was transmitting to a repeater and that will not work for simplex.
how did you compile the frequencies to upload to the software?
Yes, I need that list
Hey Ryan you mentioned you sent the data file... Where can I get a copy?
That was for a group of locals in my area for some local frequencies. I didn't realize this video was going to basically go viral when I posted it! You can make one up by going to radioreference website and finding your area.
Do you cover ctcss tones?
Can’t get past that first option prior to the start of the cloning via windows system help? 🤕
Which option? What's the time stamp if you don't know what it is.
Excellent video! I have a question about programming GMRS frequencies and GRMS repeater programming in the BF UV82 Can you please get back to me on this. I am a licensed HAM and have my GMRS license. This will help me so I don't need to buy another radio. I have 3 of these now and sure would like to use them on GMRS and monitor 2meter if possible. Thanks in advance,
So you can use this baofeng and contact cb radio?
No.
So do you need to go to your local radio frequency to get your own frequencies of your area and how do you download all of that to your computer so you don't have to install them one at a time
radioreference.com is a great way to find local frequencies. You can them type them into Chirp manually and save the file to use again later.
@@BucktailResearch is there a faster way than just doing it one at a time because you showed a way to do all of them at once and then install them that way
I set it up the first time manually for my area, then saved it. After it's saved you can do it exactly the way I showed from that file every time. Alternately, you can import batches of frequencies such as FRS or Marine Radio from the menu of chirp.
@1:23 what file?
This was for a specific group of people. I didn't realize how many other people would end up viewing this.
Is the uv82 better than the uv5r?
I prefer it. I like having two PTT buttons, one for each channel. I actually use that quite a bit. Also water resistant.
SO i got a question. How come when I plug the radio in and turn it on my computer restarts
That's a new one. Never had anything like that happen! No idea. What *exact* computer and radio?
@@BucktailResearch LOL me neither I have a UV5r and a couple BF-888s radios they dont do it lol. I wonder if its a faulty radio maybe.
Really good video. What is that extension on the bottom of your 82?
It's a high capacity battery.
P.s. have squelch set at two
Please email me with what all settings for repeater with pl 114.8. - .600

I am having trouble getting my radio to download. Keeps giving me an error message. Using Chirp. My radio is Baofeng UV-82
Any hints?
Did it upload the original data from the radio ok?
@@BucktailResearch no
my 'Port' is not auto-populated like in the video and the drop-down doesn't work. Any ideas?
What operating system? What PC? It's not recognizing the ports for some reason.
@@BucktailResearch Win 11. My grown son has the same radio and he says I need to get the cable driver. If I get a moment maybe I should rtfm lol
Hello, what is the version of the software you are using? Put the download link.
I always use the latest version of chirp. I'm not sure what version was released when i made this.
@@BucktailResearch
What is the latest version now?
I am from Iran, where are you?
Any link to How to create that file you uploaded?
Thank you...
It's just a frequency list I had created in chirp before and then saved.
@@BucktailResearch what kind of file is it? img or .csv?
@@tubepaste Don't recall, but it was saved in Chirp so whatever the default chirp file type is.
@Ryan Close - regarding the file with frequencies you mention in your video. You mentioned King County and I was wondering if you were in the Seattle area like i am. And if so you could send me your file? :)
No, opposite side of the country. Sorry!
@@BucktailResearch Oh good you are on my side lol can't wait to watch. Do I have to have windows or can I do it on chrome? "Didn't watch yet just reading comments first"
@@johnpoole8321 I don't think chirp will work with Chrome, but it will work on Windows and Ubuntu for sure.
Link of the chirp you're using please.. thanks
chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home
@@BucktailResearch thank you very much..
Can you do police scanner please? And show how you can get the tone mode.
Which police scanner?
Ryan Close UV-82. Because I have my department frequency, I just can’t get the tone, offset, etc right.
Do you need a license to download from chirp?
No. You only need a license to transmit if you're in the US.
At about 1:25 into your video, you referenced a file to open and you said, "which I sent to you guys". When/where did you send it?
This was for a specific group of people. I didn't realize how many other people would end up viewing this.
@@BucktailResearch oops glad I read this. Did you make another video on this radio for newbies?
I didn't, but it seems like maybe I should make some more videos.
@@BucktailResearch Yes please , peeps are just getting in to it and I myself at least want CB part to work so no trouble with ham.
^ answered wrong post lol.
What file?
Read the video description.
Why did you change the MR A and B Channels?
Not sure what you're asking? You mean why did I make it display channel name instead of frequency?
@@BucktailResearch
At 3:41 in your video you changed two stock settings. I was wondering what they were and why you changed them to 11 and 24.
Thx
@@Ronicon08JK oh ok. That's the two channels I wanted the radio to be on when it was turned on for the first time. Nothing too important.
@@BucktailResearch Oh Okay cool! Thanks
using chirp how do I set it up only as a police and fire scanner
Just go to a site like radioreference.com and find your local frequencies, then add them to your chirp list that you are going to upload.
@@BucktailResearch WHAT SETTING DO i CHANGE SO I WONT TRANMITT
Can't help you there. I've never attempted to do that.
I can’t get my radio to be detected by my pc.
You have the correct port selected? Windows or Linux?
I keep getting the error " the radio did not respond". I tried all the COM PORTS????????
Is the programming cable showing up in your USB? Correct radio selected?
@@BucktailResearch yes. BaoFung 82 HP
What PORT???
It's not going to be the same as my PC. Just play around until you find the one that works. If you still can't find it, there are detailed tutorials on how to determine what devices are on what ports on UA-cam.
for some reason i an stilll see the frequency only and not the names
Not sure. If you selected "name" to be displayed in the settings and uploaded to your radio it should work.
Menu option 21 and 22 on the radio you can change it manually to display Name, Channel Number or Frequency. You can set A and B independently to display as you wish. Don't forget you need to actually name the channel first in Chirp 😉
How do I delete channels I don’t want?
Don't know, friend.
Fixed it . it was the auto lock you had me turn on unlocked and turned auto lock off
Glad you were able to get it sorted!
i just bought one of these and went to retrieve program from radio and it tells ne it is btech 5x3. Help
You have to manually select what radio it is.
@@BucktailResearch I did, I picked the right model then when it finishing cloning it says it a different model
@@dalejones2108 could be the firmware. Was it able to upload to the radio under that model?
@@BucktailResearch nope
@@dalejones2108 hopefully someone can chime in if they've run into this problem.
I would like to respectfully ask you to change the name of this great UA-cam. Please change it to:
"Programming Baofeng UV-82 with Chirp for the people I previously sent the file to".
I just purchased my radio and am a brand new Technician. Thank you.
I'll add it!
McKean County? I'm in Cattaraugus County. Interesting.

I usually use 6 for squelch.
Your problem is that you have shift activated. You need to make sure it has neither a "+" nor a "-" for shift.
