Thank you. I never thought it would sound and run this well when I picked it up. It was in a very sad state. It goes to show that these motors are incredibly durable. It had been tossed away and horribly neglected. Plugs left out, pistons stuck, and rodent nest debris inside the bottom cylinder. No screws holding the recoil on, hood wouldn't latch, fuel lines were petrified and not connected to anything. Even the mice that were once in it bailed out. Now it is ready for many summers of boating again. I'm looking forward to putting some time on this one this year. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I'm pleased with how this motor turned out. It was such a mess when I bought it. I can't complain for a 25 dollar parts motor though. I am really surprised how nice it is now. I now have the steering cable geometry fixed at the transom and made a couple roller cable guides for under the deck. I got about 30° each way of steering wheel rotation out of it with the geometry corrected. I needed to keep the cables from stacking on the drum after that. It has a much nicer steering feel now. Yes sir! It's not often that SW LA, and SE MI have the same weather. Thank you! This 18 was such a mess when I bought it, even I never imagined it would turn out to run this well. A little cleaning up amd some fresh paint on top of the hood and it even looks pretty decent now. I made some updates to.the steering in the P-12 too. I corrected the cable geometry at the transom last winter before putting it in storage. This spring I made a couple of roller cables guides for under the deck to help alleviate the cable stacking that became a problem after I got more steering angle from correcting the pulley geometry. It is an absolute pleasure to run now. I still have a few small leaks to take care of, but it is a great little fun boat. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. This is a pretty late model motor for me. It does move along nicely. My '67 is still just a.little faster, but this one does very well. Considering what a mess it was, I couldn't be happier with it. I'm sure it could pull a skier if it didn't have to have a second person in the boat for a spotter. Today I got a different guy dropping off a 85 30hp for impeller and carb work, then he gonna bring his 25hp for the same things. Getting 250$ per motor for the work- carb rebuild, fuel pump/lines/filter, impeller, and gear oil. :)

Congratulations on your new motor. I will certainly try for get a video made of the internals of this motor. What are you looking for specifically? The linkage for the auto shift throttle / transmission arrangement? That, I suppose, is the most interesting and unusual part of this motor under the hood. As far as any small shops working on older outboards in the K-Zoo area, I don't really know. Close to me, the only shop that even works on motors this old is Lockeman's Hardware and Boats in Detroit. For your area, my best suggestion at this time is probably to attend the AOMCI show and swap meet in Constantine. That meet will be July 9, 10, and 11th this year. Are you holding the camera in this video, or is that a mount? It’s really smooth and clear with no shakiness. I am looking for something for when I’m fishing so I can make some videos... Stripers are here now, and shad are starting to show early too :)
This is my GoPro on a mount clamped to the gunwale of the boat. The camera's image stabilization is also fantastic. The gunwales will shake quite a bit at a certain rpm at idle and it just shows up as a shaky rail in the video. The image stays steady. I made a mount that goes in the oarlock too, but I don't use it much now that I have the clamp on mount. I can't make a very good video holding a camera and operating remote controls and a steering wheel. I have no trouble with tiller motors, but remotes make it tough. I have done it, but it is difficult to do well.
Thank you. Depending upon the lake I'm on, sometimes I have to keep.my prop out of the rocks too. I just happened to hit the mud on the bottom of the lake and spin a prop hub for my season opener on season #2. From there, "keep your prop outta the mud" just stuck. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. You can see how well the water pumpnis working by watching the amount of water coming out of the exhaust relief hole while the engine is running. If the powerhead is staying cool enough to touch for several seconds while the engine is running it is cooling OK. If it has been more than two or three years, or if you don't know when the water pump was last serviced, I would recommend pulling the lower unit and inspecting the pump / replacing the impeller. The impeller plate and housing may be getting worn or grooved and may need to be replaced as well. Thanks for watching!
Okay it seems to have a good amount of water coming out of the exhaust but it has been sitting for 10 plus years in a in a garage that's not heated not heated and we get winter here where I'm at should I check all seals and everything before putting it in the water or do you think it will be fine also what is the oilf mix ratio I've heard some people saying that you mix motor oil with the gas at like 24 to 1 or something but I'm not for because I've also heard people saying that you can run 50 to 1 on Modern 2-stroke oil really appreciate your help

Congratulations on your new motor! I have a video on the remote controls and steering build on this channel. There are no links or websites. I built most of it myself using a generic boat steering wheel, a steering drum from a commercially produced steering wheel that was made for cable pulley steering, pulleys, and hardware. The other items I made myself. The controls made a wonderful boat out of this little 12 foot Aerocraft. I was not very fond of it as a tiller controlled boat. Uncomfortable and handled poorly compared to my other boats I use with tiller motors. The remotes and center seating position turned this boat into a go-kart on the water. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. The old girl cleaned up pretty well. I had to give it a shot of paint on the top and polish out the rest of the existing paint on the cover. Thank you! This boat is a ~1968 Aerocraft P-12. Deep and wide 12 footer that started life as an open hull, 3-bench 12 foot fishing boat. The hull is about 160 lbs. It's about 11"-8" from stem to stern and factory rated for 20hp, which was the highest rated 22c.i. OMC outboard built at the time of manufacture. I built and added the remote controls to it because I found this particular boat to be most uncomfortable and poor handling from the rear bench at the tiller when solo. With the controls, it is a super little boat and a ton of fun. Thanks for watching!

@@postaltraining This one turned out so well, I have really thought about building another one with a different hull. I am really holding out for a Model R Alumacraft though. This is one of the last Aerocraft aluminum boats they built before selling out to Browning. It's too bad it was so beat up when I bought it. I will eventually get the leaks all fixed. The Gluvit did a great job on the seams that were leaking. The keel had lost all of the sealant as well and I'm still getting a small leak through there. It has quite a lot of dents and scars, but it still looks pretty good. Once I get the keel sealed I plan to look into a bit more bracing at the transom. It is solid, but I'd has had a few pretty hard blows on the corners and I'd like to brace up the floor a little more. It's a work in process and it gets a little better all the time. This boat is a blast. I managed 29mph with a small block 25hp last fall, but that motor is still.giving me trouble. I'll get one working well eventually, but it is a hoot with an 18 and that's what I keep on it most of the time. 🙂👍
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 here's one good hull that's fast and solid, but narrow beam- ANY "heavy duty" (115 lbs vs 97 lbs for "regular" gauge offering) 12' starcraft from the early to mid 1970s and maybe even longer than that. i have forward controls in that thing and have taken 2 foot chop with no problem. it is a tippy boat to get in and out of- really only a one person boat but lots of fun and 20 1/2 mph with QD and AJ hubless michigan speed prop. that was when i was 65 pounds heavier- i've lost a whole QD since then lol
@@postaltraining Yes, that is a good sturdy lightweight hull. I considered a shallow 12 foot Crestliner too. 10hp rated Shallow, narrow beam, and just over 100lbs. I could stand to lose about a QD myself. I know it would help me as well as my top speed in a boat. For now, I'll keep tweaking my Aerocraft.
Hey mr Ben, I mighta bit off more than I can chew yesterday... I got a 1988 30hp that the guy said had timing issues, he messed with the timing but I’m not sure exactly what he did... you have any videos for timing on this type of motor, apparently it needs to be set with a timing light at WOT? I think I found that it should be set to 30degrees btdc? This is the newest motor I’ve had and looked at, completely different that anything I’ve seen yet... Edit: I haven’t even tried to start it yet, so I don’t really even know what’s what yet... it’s here for impeller and carb, he sprung that ignition on me in my driveway...
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 yeah, it’s gotta be at wide open throttle with a load to set it. I callled the guy and told him I don’t have that ability here. The motors came for just routine basic stuff-impellers and fuel system cleanup, he sprung the timing issue on me in my driveway, even he wasn’t sure what he did... I told him last night he gotta come get them it’s not something I can get into and then won’t be able to complete. I feel bad but he did kinda surprise me with that issue...
@@TheFrogfeeder It happens, Man. I have not always been able to get them all done either. I had a '92 Johnson 40 hp and the boat it was on for over a year before I finally got the running issue fixed. I was down to my last ditch effort and it finally worked. I was the fourth guy to work on that one amd I didn't think it I was going to get it either. Luckily I had the time to try things and I finally figured it out. Motors I'm not familiar with or that require diagnostic equipment I don't have, I try to stay away from.
I fish a little, but my boats are typically built with boating in mind as the primary function. I do have a couple of open hull tiller boats for fishing if that is my primary purpose for that day. My remote steer boats do still fish pretty well, but an open hull layout is nice for fishing. Thanks for watching!
Hey I have a question for you. I have a 55 Evinrude fleet twin 7.5 that has a leaky gear case. I have resealed it 2 times with a full seal kit and it still leaks bad. I’d run it for 5 minutes in a barrel and pull the oil plug and it would be white as milk. Would it be possible to locate the leak? I’m thinking it might have a crack somewhere as I do not know the history of it before I got it a year ago. Thanks!
I pressure test them and check all the places that can leak for bubbles if it loses pressure to find the leak(s). I made my pressure tester out of a radiator pressure tester. Did you replace the shift rod O-ring? I find that is normally the first seal to fail. Also, when you resealed it before, Did you seal around the screw holes and put sealer on the screw threads? Those are all places that can leak.
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 I made my own pressure tester just to find out that it has a crack in the lower unit where the water pickup is and it lets water directly in! thanks for the info on it though!
Thank you. I was getting a solid 25mph with the highest I saw of 25.5mph. Compression was 120/116 last time I measured it. That was after about an hour of run time. I have not checked it again yet. I'll probably put a few more hours on it before taking another reading. I did recently have the cylinder head off and the cylinder bores look great. No scoring and still has cross hatch in both. I was amazed considering what it looked like when I got it. Thanks for watching, Greg!
Thank you. The OMC 18s are my favorite motors. The biggest differences I have seen between the low-tension magneto and the universal magneto are these. The low-tension magneto is very critical of points timing. Much more so than the universal magneto. When parts wear, sometimes the low-tension magneto will not maintain points timing well enough for good run quality, especially at lower speeds. They are also, historically, more prone to spark plug fouling than the earlier ignition system. These issues are more common as the system gets more wear on it, but occasionally they just don't work well even if everything is in good condition. I do not personally see that the low-tension system was any kind of progress or step forward. In my mind, all they did was add an extra coil and complication to a system that had worked flawlessly for 20 years. They still had mechanical points and condensers, 3 coils instead of 2, more wires and connectors than before, and end up with a system that is more sensitive to wear and more difficult to tune properly. For these reasons, I could not see throwing good money after bad to fix the original system when I had the parts on hand to retrofit to a system that I see as superior. Thanks for watching!

Now, I could see why they went to the CDI type around 1977, because that eliminated points. But I never understood why they made everything so complicated with the low tension models.
@@kyledevries4423 Same wonders here. It seems they clearly took a step backwards before moving forward. I wonder if, with other manufacturers bringing out electronic ignition, if they didn't feel like they had to do "something" amd that something was low-tension magneto. In my opinion, the only worse systemon an outboard was the Mercury Thunderbolt / phase maker.
I have problems with my 18 HP fastwin water comes thru head but doesn't come out at back of lower unit. There's a hole in the front of lower unit it comes out at. Does that happen much. ?
The water coming out of the hole at the front of the midsection just above the water line is normal. That keeps water from going too high inside the drive shaft cavity. Are you getting sufficient water through the powerhead to keep it cool? It seems unlikely if there is none coming out of the relief hole at the back of the midsection. The exit hole may be clogged under the powerhead. I would recommend removing the lower unit and connecting a garden hose to the water tube. Turn the hose on and see of water will flow through the powerhead and out the water outlet. While the lower unit is off, remove the prop, connect a drill motor to the drive shaft, submerge the lower unit just to the water pump and spin it with the drill motor. This will show you whether the pump is working. If you do not know when the impeller was last replaced, I'd highly recommend replacing it while the lower unit is off. There is a possibility the water tube grommets are not sealing and that the pump itself is worn too. If the impeller plate and / or the impeller housing are grooved badly enough, the pump will not function well enough to keep the engine cool. Thanks for watching!
The huge number of old Evinrude/Johnson outboards still in use are a testament to the quality that was put into the engines and lower units. So sad to see American industry being gutted by horrible political policies.

That definitely depends on what you consider overkill. Does thus boat need 25hp? No, certainly not. It does close to 20mph with 10hp. I usually run an 18hp Evinrude on this boat which is a great match. That moves it at between 24 and 26 mph. I got just a fuzz under 29 mph with this 25hp. That is as fast as I have had this boat moving. In working toward being able to get a consistent and steady 30mph out of this boat. It's a lot of fun at 25mph, but I'd like to be able to do that with a little left to go. 30-31mph is where I'd like to be and I'm sure it's going to take at least 25hp to get there.it is still an enjoyable boat to run even with 10hp though. This is my GoPro on a mount clamped to the gunwale of the boat. The camera's image stabilization is also fantastic. The gunwales will shake quite a bit at a certain rpm at idle and it just shows up as a shaky rail in the video. The image stays steady. I made a mount that goes in the oarlock too, but I don't use it much now that I have the clamp on mount. I can't make a very good video holding a camera and operating remote controls and a steering wheel. I have no trouble with tiller motors, but remotes make it tough. I have done it, but it is difficult to do well.
I forgot to say; I like your motto keep your prop out of the mud.. I have to keep my prop out of the ROCKS...
Thank you. Depending upon the lake I'm on, sometimes I have to keep.my prop out of the rocks too. I just happened to hit the mud on the bottom of the lake and spin a prop hub for my season opener on season #2. From there, "keep your prop outta the mud" just stuck. Thanks for watching!
Sweet motor i have a 59 evinrude golden jubilee 10 horse how do i check the water pump without pulling the foot of the motor
Thank you. You can see how well the water pumpnis working by watching the amount of water coming out of the exhaust relief hole while the engine is running. If the powerhead is staying cool enough to touch for several seconds while the engine is running it is cooling OK. If it has been more than two or three years, or if you don't know when the water pump was last serviced, I would recommend pulling the lower unit and inspecting the pump / replacing the impeller. The impeller plate and housing may be getting worn or grooved and may need to be replaced as well. Thanks for watching!
Okay it seems to have a good amount of water coming out of the exhaust but it has been sitting for 10 plus years in a in a garage that's not heated not heated and we get winter here where I'm at should I check all seals and everything before putting it in the water or do you think it will be fine also what is the oilf mix ratio I've heard some people saying that you mix motor oil with the gas at like 24 to 1 or something but I'm not for because I've also heard people saying that you can run 50 to 1 on Modern 2-stroke oil really appreciate your help
just picked up a 1973 fastwin 18hp just like urs what i want to know and see is the steering setup from what i cam make out that is pretty sweet where did you get it links? website? thanks maybe you can make a vid of the steering setup from wheel to motor cables etc etc.
Congratulations on your new motor! I have a video on the remote controls and steering build on this channel. There are no links or websites. I built most of it myself using a generic boat steering wheel, a steering drum from a commercially produced steering wheel that was made for cable pulley steering, pulleys, and hardware. The other items I made myself. The controls made a wonderful boat out of this little 12 foot Aerocraft. I was not very fond of it as a tiller controlled boat. Uncomfortable and handled poorly compared to my other boats I use with tiller motors. The remotes and center seating position turned this boat into a go-kart on the water. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. The old girl cleaned up pretty well. I had to give it a shot of paint on the top and polish out the rest of the existing paint on the cover. Thank you! This boat is a ~1968 Aerocraft P-12. Deep and wide 12 footer that started life as an open hull, 3-bench 12 foot fishing boat. The hull is about 160 lbs. It's about 11"-8" from stem to stern and factory rated for 20hp, which was the highest rated 22c.i. OMC outboard built at the time of manufacture. I built and added the remote controls to it because I found this particular boat to be most uncomfortable and poor handling from the rear bench at the tiller when solo. With the controls, it is a super little boat and a ton of fun. Thanks for watching!

@@postaltraining This one turned out so well, I have really thought about building another one with a different hull. I am really holding out for a Model R Alumacraft though. This is one of the last Aerocraft aluminum boats they built before selling out to Browning. It's too bad it was so beat up when I bought it. I will eventually get the leaks all fixed. The Gluvit did a great job on the seams that were leaking. The keel had lost all of the sealant as well and I'm still getting a small leak through there. It has quite a lot of dents and scars, but it still looks pretty good. Once I get the keel sealed I plan to look into a bit more bracing at the transom. It is solid, but I'd has had a few pretty hard blows on the corners and I'd like to brace up the floor a little more. It's a work in process and it gets a little better all the time. This boat is a blast. I managed 29mph with a small block 25hp last fall, but that motor is still.giving me trouble. I'll get one working well eventually, but it is a hoot with an 18 and that's what I keep on it most of the time. 🙂👍
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 here's one good hull that's fast and solid, but narrow beam- ANY "heavy duty" (115 lbs vs 97 lbs for "regular" gauge offering) 12' starcraft from the early to mid 1970s and maybe even longer than that.
i have forward controls in that thing and have taken 2 foot chop with no problem. it is a tippy boat to get in and out of- really only a one person boat
but lots of fun and 20 1/2 mph with QD and AJ hubless michigan speed prop. that was when i was 65 pounds heavier- i've lost a whole QD since then lol
@@postaltraining Yes, that is a good sturdy lightweight hull. I considered a shallow 12 foot Crestliner too. 10hp rated Shallow, narrow beam, and just over 100lbs. I could stand to lose about a QD myself. I know it would help me as well as my top speed in a boat. For now, I'll keep tweaking my Aerocraft.
Hey mr Ben, I mighta bit off more than I can chew yesterday... I got a 1988 30hp that the guy said had timing issues, he messed with the timing but I’m not sure exactly what he did... you have any videos for timing on this type of motor, apparently it needs to be set with a timing light at WOT? I think I found that it should be set to 30degrees btdc? This is the newest motor I’ve had and looked at, completely different that anything I’ve seen yet...
Edit: I haven’t even tried to start it yet, so I don’t really even know what’s what yet... it’s here for impeller and carb, he sprung that ignition on me in my driveway...
I have zero experience with timing adjustments on a CDI motor like this one. I think you need a test tank and a test wheel to do it properly.
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 yeah, it’s gotta be at wide open throttle with a load to set it. I callled the guy and told him I don’t have that ability here. The motors came for just routine basic stuff-impellers and fuel system cleanup, he sprung the timing issue on me in my driveway, even he wasn’t sure what he did... I told him last night he gotta come get them it’s not something I can get into and then won’t be able to complete. I feel bad but he did kinda surprise me with that issue...
@@TheFrogfeeder It happens, Man. I have not always been able to get them all done either. I had a '92 Johnson 40 hp and the boat it was on for over a year before I finally got the running issue fixed. I was down to my last ditch effort and it finally worked. I was the fourth guy to work on that one amd I didn't think it I was going to get it either. Luckily I had the time to try things and I finally figured it out. Motors I'm not familiar with or that require diagnostic equipment I don't have, I try to stay away from.
You do great work at repairing outbound motors... Do you fish with any of your rigs you build?? Just asking..
I fish a little, but my boats are typically built with boating in mind as the primary function. I do have a couple of open hull tiller boats for fishing if that is my primary purpose for that day. My remote steer boats do still fish pretty well, but an open hull layout is nice for fishing. Thanks for watching!

Hey I have a question for you. I have a 55 Evinrude fleet twin 7.5 that has a leaky gear case. I have resealed it 2 times with a full seal kit and it still leaks bad. I’d run it for 5 minutes in a barrel and pull the oil plug and it would be white as milk. Would it be possible to locate the leak? I’m thinking it might have a crack somewhere as I do not know the history of it before I got it a year ago. Thanks!
I pressure test them and check all the places that can leak for bubbles if it loses pressure to find the leak(s). I made my pressure tester out of a radiator pressure tester. Did you replace the shift rod O-ring? I find that is normally the first seal to fail. Also, when you resealed it before, Did you seal around the screw holes and put sealer on the screw threads? Those are all places that can leak.
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 I made my own pressure tester just to find out that it has a crack in the lower unit where the water pickup is and it lets water directly in! thanks for the info on it though!
Sounds great. What kind of speed were you getting? What were your compression numbers after running it?
Thank you. I was getting a solid 25mph with the highest I saw of 25.5mph. Compression was 120/116 last time I measured it. That was after about an hour of run time. I have not checked it again yet. I'll probably put a few more hours on it before taking another reading. I did recently have the cylinder head off and the cylinder bores look great. No scoring and still has cross hatch in both. I was amazed considering what it looked like when I got it. Thanks for watching, Greg!
Nice job, you seem to really like those 18's. Do you notice any big running difference between the low tension ignition and the old universal magneto?
Thank you. The OMC 18s are my favorite motors. The biggest differences I have seen between the low-tension magneto and the universal magneto are these. The low-tension magneto is very critical of points timing. Much more so than the universal magneto. When parts wear, sometimes the low-tension magneto will not maintain points timing well enough for good run quality, especially at lower speeds. They are also, historically, more prone to spark plug fouling than the earlier ignition system. These issues are more common as the system gets more wear on it, but occasionally they just don't work well even if everything is in good condition.
I do not personally see that the low-tension system was any kind of progress or step forward. In my mind, all they did was add an extra coil and complication to a system that had worked flawlessly for 20 years. They still had mechanical points and condensers, 3 coils instead of 2, more wires and connectors than before, and end up with a system that is more sensitive to wear and more difficult to tune properly. For these reasons, I could not see throwing good money after bad to fix the original system when I had the parts on hand to retrofit to a system that I see as superior. Thanks for watching!

Now, I could see why they went to the CDI type around 1977, because that eliminated points. But I never understood why they made everything so complicated with the low tension models.
@@kyledevries4423 Same wonders here. It seems they clearly took a step backwards before moving forward. I wonder if, with other manufacturers bringing out electronic ignition, if they didn't feel like they had to do "something" amd that something was low-tension magneto. In my opinion, the only worse systemon an outboard was the Mercury Thunderbolt / phase maker.

I have problems with my 18 HP fastwin water comes thru head but doesn't come out at back of lower unit. There's a hole in the front of lower unit it comes out at. Does that happen much. ?
The water coming out of the hole at the front of the midsection just above the water line is normal. That keeps water from going too high inside the drive shaft cavity. Are you getting sufficient water through the powerhead to keep it cool? It seems unlikely if there is none coming out of the relief hole at the back of the midsection. The exit hole may be clogged under the powerhead. I would recommend removing the lower unit and connecting a garden hose to the water tube. Turn the hose on and see of water will flow through the powerhead and out the water outlet. While the lower unit is off, remove the prop, connect a drill motor to the drive shaft, submerge the lower unit just to the water pump and spin it with the drill motor. This will show you whether the pump is working. If you do not know when the impeller was last replaced, I'd highly recommend replacing it while the lower unit is off. There is a possibility the water tube grommets are not sealing and that the pump itself is worn too. If the impeller plate and / or the impeller housing are grooved badly enough, the pump will not function well enough to keep the engine cool. Thanks for watching!

The huge number of old Evinrude/Johnson outboards still in use are a testament to the quality that was put into the engines and lower units. So sad to see American industry being gutted by horrible political policies.
That and a Mercury 20 were always my favorite motors, Evinrude easier and cheaper to work on

That definitely depends on what you consider overkill. Does thus boat need 25hp? No, certainly not. It does close to 20mph with 10hp. I usually run an 18hp Evinrude on this boat which is a great match. That moves it at between 24 and 26 mph. I got just a fuzz under 29 mph with this 25hp. That is as fast as I have had this boat moving. In working toward being able to get a consistent and steady 30mph out of this boat. It's a lot of fun at 25mph, but I'd like to be able to do that with a little left to go. 30-31mph is where I'd like to be and I'm sure it's going to take at least 25hp to get there.it is still an enjoyable boat to run even with 10hp though.
