- This video shows a tank test for a vintage 1968 Evinrude Fastwin 18HP outboard motor. The customer was having issues with the engine stalling at idle speed. Although dirty carburetors often cause symptoms like this, it was concluded that adjusting the low speed mixture screw was all that was needed.

Love seeing these old motors running like a champ ... Ihave a 63 sportwin 10hp ..runs like a top ... Also appreciate this informative info sir...
Help me out
Great video. Just picked up my first project boat with one of these motors hanging on the back. Lots of work to do but I'm excited to do it. This is one of the only videos I've found that explain this motor in any technical capacity and you've already answered a couple questions of mine so I thank you for that.
Thank you !! Just bought a 1965 18 hp Fishwin & its doing the exact same thing. I will give this a try & keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again !
Update: Went to make the mixture richer & the knob was maxed out already. Fanagled it like you said so I could get a richer mixture, pretty easy & think I found its sweet spot, amazing ! It took my confidence level from a 0 to about an 8 out of 10, lol. You the Man !
Thanks for making the video. I am picking a long dormant fastwin from the ealry 70's tomorrow.Hope it is in good shape
I have the same motor bought it last week off a man paid him $160 bucks it runs good but watching this video I understand the motor better now. This will show me how to adjust it the right way thanks for the video. Oh yeah it’s on a 14ft Arkansas Jon boat big motor small boat
Great video on Carb adjustments..!!!!
Thank you for sharing.
This was very helpful. Thanks I’ll try again now with a bit more hope
Best video on UA-cam! Thanks brother.
Nicely done
I had that one, what memories!
Nice work

Good information.
I have a 1988 force 9.9. Was running g great, had 120 psi compression. Then took it over mountains on a lake hot day and more passengers then usual, and it seemed to have over heated. The cylinder head cover paint got burnt. My impeller is definitely working. Was trying to mess with premix screw but didnt help. Now my compression is showing 90 and when I pulled plugs they were wet. Also at trying to rev it high by hand the rpms are surging up and down. Any advice for me? Does too much oil in gas cause compression to drop?
Got same motor. Great motor just keep that fing ethanol out of the carb haha damn right it'll run forever!
I have a 1970 18hp. The lean mixture linkage is broken off. This caused me to run lean and the engine bogged down completely. Had to troll 2 miles upriver to get to the landing. I could have adjusted the lean mix screw by hand if I had known what the problem was at the time. I’ll make a new adjustment arm and take it to the river for a test.
Interesting, I have the '73 version. Smokes like a b*tch but runs like a top. Lots of vibration but a great motor for my 14' jon boat. I'm about to run a Seafoam treatment on it, change the lower-oil & change the plugs, which I do every 3 or so years. Thanks for the post!
I've got a 1968 Fastwin that will not start unless you add fuel to carb throat or cylinders. Runs perfect once it fires up. Any idea what the cause could be? Compression is 120/125, Carbs been cleaned, new points, condensers, plugs, wires, all new fuel hoses and gas tank.
I have the the same motor but with the high and low speed screw but I I have to hold the choke and pull the cord at the same time in order to start it is there away of fixing it so that I don't have to hold the choke?
Great info! I have a72 18hp and tried a few of your tips. The helped but I'm still getting a low idle/low speed surge in all weather conditions. I have a brand new fuel tank/line and primer, new fuel line from carb to fuel pump, just rebuilt and cleaned carb, fairly new plugs (about 2 months old). If I'm moving about 3mph or faster I have no issues, and the primer has good pressure at idle and when under load. I've adjusted the low speed mixture a bit, only an 1/8" at a time back and forth to see if anything changes. Any ideas???
Thanks,
Phil
is it cooling properly ie. what is the cylinder head temp? have you checked for hot blue spark with a tester>? id check timing as well and pop off the flywheel. make sure the points are gapped to spec and the coils test good with an ohm meter. if its overheating could be the exhaust gasket underneath...
My Evinrude 18 Bj 68 I have awakened after 30 years from the preservation. This also went very well. Runs great when he takes full gas. I give full throttle and it pulls like a 4 ps engine. If I then take a few times gas completely away and again full gas he goes off like a rocket and then stops the gas. If I go back completely from the gas, the whole game starts again from the front.
Can someone help me?
Spark plugs, fuel hoses and oil are new.
He also goes on the first train.
I have a 1962 Evinrude fastwin is it true if you do not have a thermostat in the motor will it affect the operation of the motor
Really good video. I have the same motor. Also having issues with the high/low air fuel mix needle. I thing it is way out of adjustment out of the parameters. I can't find anything on how to re adjust it. Ie get it back to its factory settings. If any one could help with this i would appreciate the help.
what did you do to enrich the fuel can't see what your doing
Watched your video. Very informative, but i need to to know how far to turn air/fuel mix out from stop position. Linkage and knob have been removed before i attempted adjustment.
I don’t know if you ever found your answer, but what I did was from fully closed I turned it a 1/8 turn then try starting. If it doesn’t start then turn another 1/8 turn and try starting. Do that till it starts then go from there. I also make marks on the low mix screw so I know where it’s good on cold start, warm start, fully closed, etc.
my 18 hp evinrude sneezes and won't start. any advice. carb clean spark plugs ok
I have a '72 25 horse Evinrude similar to this one. It's the first boat I've owned, and I noticed that the low speed mixture knob only travels about 1/2 a turn. Is that correct? Also, what were you touching to kill the motor? Thanks,
I also noticed that I didn't see an air filter, is this normal?
The restriction is only for fine adjustment. You have to pull the plastic coupler off, adjust the mixture, then replace the plastic sleeve with the adjustment needle CENTERED within its adjustment range.
Yupp I was out on the water just had to tweak it a bit and found somewhat optimum. When I slowly creep up to full throttle though at the top speed was some stutter.... so I was like whoa and slowed down. Richen it a bit???
I have a 1962 28 horse Evinrude what fuel mixture y'all running thank you
Great video. Thanks. I used the Sea Foam and it really helped my motor. Question unrelated to carb: The grease fitting on the shift lever...I have pumped a ton of grease into it and am not getting any coming out anywhere. Where should it come out? Should I just keep pumping it in, or could I damage something?
For that grease fitting, just 3 or 4 strokes on the grease gun is all you need. Excess grease from continuing to pump is dropping down your exhaust tube into the lower unit. No damage, just gonna be a little messy down there if you remove the lower unit.
highlandoutboards Very good. Thank you.
Where can i get a mixture knob and the o ring or whatever that keeps the choke le er out by itself on my 1968 evenrude 25hp? Nobody seems to have them everywhere i look?
www.boats.net/catalog/evinrude/outboard-by-year/1968/18802a/carburetor-group it's # 81 $15 bucks. #80 is the choke knob. no 0 rings for either....
just realized they didn't make a 25 horse in 68', but those above knobs should work. need the model # port side of motor to tell what you really have...
How many psi ist great for this motors i have one sane thing runs 3 miles but low aceleration ?
Low acceleration could also be caused by your carburetor mixture settings. Mixtures that are too rich are equally likely to cause acceleration problems as mixtures that are too lean.
The factory specifications put most of the compression testing emphasis on having compression in both the cylinders within 5psi of each other. They don't emphasize having a specific compression value in the service manual, but the community generally recommends compression of greater than 70psi. Ideally somewhere between 75 and 85psi.
You need to run 1 fl oz of Sea Foam per gallon of mixed fuel in your regular fuel tank. Good maintenance. Problems solved.
My throttle always wants to return to slowest setting - thus killing the motor. How do I make it so that throttle stays where it is set? Or how do I adjust what the slowest setting is so that it doesn't die? I basically have to hold the throttle handle giving it a bit of throttle all the time.
Tolli Lowell-Forker there is a little screw on the left side of the shaft. You can tighten that screw to prevent the throttle from backing off too far and causing it to die. If you open an close the throttle you will see how it works
There's an idle stop screw on the side where the throttle linkage 'tower' shaft engages with the tiller's horizontal shaft. It may be a nylon screw and broken or missing.
I'm new to having a boat. Got my 5 year old and myself one and really want to know everything about my motor. 18hp 18202 R E0011300 EvinRude. What is the fuel ratio? Is this a 2 stroke motor. What makes it a 2 stroke? I have a 6 gal tank. Help me out please with any info that will help me not break down this weekend on the lake.
Fuel ratio is 50:1. A 2 stroke means you mix the oil & gas in the tank, theyre not in separate compartments
Is normal the white smoke ? Or not ?
I have the same motor it will start an just run for a second an then I have to prime it again but it will start right back up an run until the bowl is empty ... any suggestions
Air is getting into your fuel line somewhere. Either at connector on tank side, connector on motor side, or fuel line to the carburetor.
So just got an aluminum boat, welded Gregor. It came with a 6hp fastwin, and this 18hp fastwin. The 6 runs like a top, the 18 not so much. Got it to turn over with starting fluid, it’s a start.
Edit: what is the electrical connector for in the center of the front, between the choke and low speed adjuster?
Sounds like the kill switch button
I just bought the same motor and I thought it had optional electric start 😂
@@CERTIFIEDUA-camDOCTOR oh man, I’ve come a long way since that comment... lol only 11 months ago I was asking that? Now I’m buying old non runners, fixing them and selling them...anything from ‘64 to about ‘75 35hp and down I am a whiz, and getting good with the next 2 bigger size groups.
I have a question about the motor my cousin has one and when you are driving it it will Skip like it all most seems Like it misses a tooth they took the lower end off and didn't see any broke teeth on lower unit.. when it dose it it's like it skips then wines up
hit the wrong button wasn't finished.. but when it wines up it will kick back in and snap the prop pin.. do you think it could be clutch? and advice will be appreciated
it all so i think 1959 18 hp evinrude
I’m not a professional. I’ve worked on my small engines plenty of times. My belief, what you’re dealing with is the Dog Clutch is Worn. There is a Pin Part that Falls into a Slot. If you look at the Slot, you’ll probably notice it’s rounded off. Order a New Dog Clutch, or have it Machined, to a Sharp Edge like New. I’ve Machined mine and worked Perfectly. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I hope this helps
wolfcale's ranch Worn rounded shift dogs on gears and dog. Typical issue. You can grind them square or replace them. On long island NY I grew up working on these. Good luck.
Please can you tell me how many psi on conpresion this motors ?
The factory specifications put most of the compression testing emphasis on having compression in both the cylinders within 5psi of each other. They don't emphasize having a specific compression value in the service manual, but the community generally recommends compression of greater than 70psi. Ideally somewhere between 75 and 85psi.
Ninety PSI is good; 100 to 110 is even better.
Where should be my settings to start? from close to open..I cant get it running now.
It Should be with choke on. If it is Not Starting, Check for spark and max fuel a bit
When you look at the motor from the side it looks pointed in front but if you look at it from the front it's flat.
Low speed lean pop. Back needle out half a turn or more.
Is the fuel mixture on these 24.1 Or 50.1?
50:1
Working the throttle by hand, you're not moving the timing. It won't rev up and run right if the timing isn't moved along with the throttle. They move in sync timing and throttle.
i have the same motor do u know where i can find a fuel pump for this motor
This motor uses fuel pump assembly part number 382875 which you can order from boats.net or marineengine.com
Fuel pumps are readily available aftermarket; try the Sierra brand name!
Better watch your hands around that flywheel :)
Can you make the same video with High Speed mixture ?
On this exact model, the high speed mixture is not adjustable. It has a fixed mixture defined by the orifice in the plug at the bottom of the carb bowl.
yes i know it,but i have a 1962 Evinrude with low and highspeed mixture. But i have no idea, for adjust the Highspeed needle
On that model and same for similar years/models, the starting position for the low speed mixture screw is 1 to 1.5 turns counter-clockwise from a lightly seated position. The starting position for the high speed mixture screw is 0.75 to 1 turn counter-clockwise from a lightly seated position. Use this as a starting point.
what size hose do you have for the gas connector and bulb?
5/16 inch inner diameter fuel line
Thanks!!
Customer can in and is having it fixed? the local outboard shop told me to go away and never come back with my ancient OMC outboard and they wouldnt even touch them
Thats sad because these motors are trustworthy... I have a 63 ten i serviced it and been running like a dream ..never left me stranded ever.. Great motor tho man ..
Got same motor
I have same motor miine is a model e... I cant seem to get good high speed revs. so there is no way to adjust full fix at high speed?
High speed fuel mix can be affected by the low speed mixture setting. Also, high speed fuel mix can be affected by the cleanliness of the high-speed orifice. Make sure it is clear of residue or obstructions.
Clean the carb and check the ignition to make sure you're getting strong spark. Oxidized breaker points or fouled plugs could be the culprit. Also check compression to make sure powerhead isn't tired.
U got use throttle handle cause it advances ignition also.
No doubt. Wondering why its faltering, and I'm just sitting here like 'you drowning it in gas, of course its choking.'
I have one gust like it with electric start
dang spit it out
how much
how much for motor please
That motor is missing or has a broken water restrictor in the mid section.I have seen it many times.Water is just slushing and pulsing out the engine which isnt OK to me for my engines but probably you will get away with it no buddy likes pulling the powerhead off to replace the plastic restrictor. At idle it should be spraying like a shower head.Check the thermostat too take it out or replace it.Just an observance from mechanic for years on outboards.I have a real nice 1968 Evinrude 18H.P. in my collection same year with less than 25 hours on it.I love these videos ..
Is there another name for the water restrictor that you're talking about? I just checked Marine Engine web site for this part and can't find it in their parts diagrams. I'm looking at the diagram for a 1961 18hp, 15034.
@@TerryInOttawa Hello Terry sorry for late response look at 1968 Evinrude 18HP m/n 18802 at the marineengine.com website lower unit group parts view and you will see the restrictor P/N 313435.Like I said you probably get away without it as the earlier 18s didnt have it . I just think the restrictors came out because the waterpumps were so strong without the restrictor that they wanted to slow the cooling flow time down a little to run warmer at higher power settings even with a thermostat but Im not sure...Glenn
GFPALL62 do you have a fix for a 85hp Johnson that will not start without starting fluid then starts fine after that
Woo you only want your outboard motor for collection can't believe only 25 hour on it
please text me the price
Hello
that is not a 1968 early 60's
