    As a tanker truck driver, now retired, I once pickup a load of honey. The truck was capable of hauling 4000 gallons legally but they only had 3500 gallons and change on hand. I only now appreciate how long and hard it was to come up with that much honey. Wow good work guys!

      It would take me almost 10 years to produce that much honey. If you had not seen how we get the honey to the honey house, the video link below will show you, I hope you will check it out. Glad to hear you are retired, it's my prayer everyone who works gets to see that day. I have been retired since 2009 and now volunteer keeping bees for the monks. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. Here at St, Joseph Abbey we are blessed with over 180 hives in our apiaries, and with that many hives we are able to supply our Gift Shop with honey to last all through the year. We have been asked numerous times about adding mead to what we supply to the Gift Shop, but as much honey as it would take to make mead, I worry we would then not have enough honey to sell. For now, we will continue with just selling honey. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. Dad and I used to do anywhere between 40 and 80 gallons every year, by hand.
    He'd cut the caps off with a heat knife, I'd take them and spin them two at a time, flipping to get the other side, a 2 frame extractor.
    Damn if I didn't get the thick honey ones spun out before he was done cutting two more.
    Moving everything around in 1.5 gallon pots borrowed from the kitchen.
    We only had 1 heated 50G drum, so anything after that just sat in the basement until he cooked the first batch, the whole family bottled and labelled, and then we'd finish up.
    18 colonies at max before I went off to college and he started buying from others.
    (We have a xmas tree farm, and would sell all we made through the year, most at xmas. )
    Brought back memories of the hot knife cutting the caps off, me spinning, and the smells/sound of spinning.
    The only thing I really liked was watching the "cobwebs" hit the walls of the extractor, but there wasn't really enough time to enjoy that.
    Oh yeah, we did it in the basement of a 200 year old farmhouse, so bees EVERYWHERE from oct 15th or thereabouts thru Dec 1st. fun fun....

Even the water used to wash down all the equipment runs outside where the bees can drink it up. So enjoyed meeting and visiting with you last night at the Marshall Texas Beekeepers meeting. Great takeaways from your topic were - outside storing of frames only works if they are honey frames. (so, where do you store excess brood frames?) Also, your uncapping process and allowing the caps to be in the honey storage tanks. (Great time saver tip) My own honey hut is 12x24, I’m still in the process of finishing out the interior and am so inspired by the creativity of the artist who did yours 😊 I sure hope she enters her quilts in exhibition shows 🎉 be sure to add some photos of the finished interior to your video speaking slides. Again, thank you so much for your testimony of the God connection a beekeeper benefits from receiving when working their apiary and that if it doesn’t bring you joy, you need to simplify your process. 🙏🏻

      What an honor it was for me to speak at the Marshall Texas beekeepers club meeting, and to meet so many wonderful beekeepers like yourself Charla. My wife, Mona, was an interior designer in her working days, and painted murals on dozens of commercial and residential walls in the Houston area, she grew up in Tomball, and she was responsible for the creation of the honey house walls. It took us about a week to start and finish the project, and rest assured, I will be updating the slide presentation with the new design. Hi Jeff, I noticed you struggling with the squeegee walking from front to back of the uncapping machine and a thought came to me. I'm a woman so I'll have to ask you to forgive and go with a description rather than a part name.
    So your squeegee, there is a joiner for galvanized poles that are e pole caps connected with a hinge/swivel. If you put this on the end of your squeegee, you can make the handle of your squeegee long enough to push through from the front without needing more space. You just hold it at a 90 degree at the hinge and then unfold it as you need the length. Then fold it back as you pull the squeegee back toward you. Put a pipe clip on it, fold and clip when done and it stores the same.
    Thank you for taking us along with you, God be with you in the days ahead...

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 місяці тому +1

      Great idea about improving the squeegee, but I solved the issue in a different manner, I simply elevated the end of the machine to get the honey to flow down quicker. That way, I no longer had to pass the squeegee through the machine thus eliminating the need for a long pole. It is always my pleasure to share my experiences of keeping bees and all the other jobs associated with that. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. Dumb question, but I'm not a beekeeper so I can ask those lol. When there's that many cappings, how do you prevent larvae from hatching? I know smaller processing loads I've watched, the people have frozen them over night etc?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 місяці тому +7

      That's actually a very good question and one that a seasoned beekeeper may not even consider. In the past I have actually had beetle larvae hatch out from the cappings if I allow the cappings to stay in the drums for to long, over 2 weeks. But in fact, it matters not if they do hatch as they are nowhere near the honey which is several inches below them, they only stay on the top of the cappings. Now, I make sure I get the job done within a week after processing insuring that does not happen. Thanks for watching. God's peace David.

    He needs to get an extra-extra long squeegee handle to get the honey out from below the uncapping machine! It's wild how fast those 55 gallon blue drums fill up!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  2 місяці тому +2

      I wound up adding a 2X4 at the end of the uncapping machine to give a slope to it. After that, the honey/wax slurry moved really fast all on it own. Every time the extractor runs, it's about 20 gallons of honey that come from it, and at that rate, it does fill a drum very quickly. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. Jeff like to offer a suggestion which I think could cut your workload. If you installed a large wire mesh filter across the bottom of the drip tank to capture the capping's also set a mesh basket in the drum to capture the capping's from the extractor. It would speed the refining process.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 місяці тому

      Because the honey/wax slurry that winds up in the tank is pumped into the drum, the process is VERY quick. My interest is speed when processing honey, and there is nothing slower than honey passing through a strainer. For this reason I allow it all to mix together and come back after the processing is over and strain it at that point. I appreciate your suggestion and thank you for it and for watching. God's peace brother.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 місяці тому

      Because the comb is built on plastic foundation, there is no chance of the wax distorting or falling from the frame.That is the main reason most beekeeper use plastic foundation in their honey supers. The cost is $12.00 for a one pound, plastic bottle, and $10.00 for shipping. If you want more than one bottle, the shipping cost is still $10.00 for up to 2 bottles, but each bottle is still $12.00. As soon as I get your check, I will send it out. Make the check out to "St. Joseph Abbey" but send the letter to:
      Mr. Ed
      75376 River Rd.
      St. Benedict, La. 70457
      If you'd like, I'll even sign the bottle. Looking forward to hearing from you. God's peace Sean.

    This year in my yard I have had a bumper crop of clover. I mow it and the next day it is back. I sat and watched it and I see thousands of honey bees in my yard. I don't know anyone close to me that has bees. How far will they travel to find my clover?

    • @cathiwim

      Thank you, it has been a work in progress of over 8 years, but now I think we have everything we need to get the job done very fast and very efficient. All that is used to clean up is cold water. I never use cleaning solutions as they all leave some sort of chemical trail and I do not want anything in our honey except what the bees put into it. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. Mr. Ed, have you ever had, or do you ever get a pesky bee that for some reason, seems to be in an aggressive behavior and will get in your face, even though you aren't near the hives. Is it the weather that gets them worked up? I seem to get 1 or 2 during the summer months that comes buzzing at me when im hanging the clothes to dry, or in my garage. My bees aren't aggressive, but I do notice this behavior around this time of year. The good Lord has blessed you with all that delicious honey.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 місяці тому

      Bees exhibit a more "aggressive" nature whenever there is a dearth going on. Because there are not resources coming into the hive, and the field bees have no work to do because there is no nectar to be gathered, they may become a bit more testy. And yes, I truly am a blessed man. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Chuck.

    in previous videos i saw you taking a bite out of a comb from a bee hive that you are removing somewhere. Obviously that has no foundation of plastic, but doesn't the wax has any bad taste to it when you take a bite like that ?
