  • Can you tell which one is which? In this video, we demo two incredible black nickel brass snare drums; an iconic Ludwig Black Beauty 6.5x14" snare played by Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen - and - Lars Ulrich on the Metallica Masters of Puppets album, versus the Dialtune 6.5x14" black nickel brass snare with a 1.2mm shell.
Recorded by Cole Paramore, and made possible thanks to our friends at Robert Lang Studios (learn more at robertlangstudios.com).

Was waiting ages for this! I actually liked the DT better, but they were close enough that a 10 seconds for a slight tuning change, a baby amount of dampening, could match the the BB. To get the BB to sound like the DT, you'd need a swap heads for something a bit more open, getting the tuning right doing manual tuning. Play the head in as it's going to stretch, so on, so forth.
And the immediate versatility and ability to experiment on the fly with no time consequences is a massive plus that the DT gives you that the BB doesn't. I got the DT and was blown away, but a little part of me was always wondering if I should get a BB for more sound critical purposes. Now I'm more than satisfied with my DT for anything that I'd want a black beauty for otherwise. Congrats, you guys made the perfect snare.

I only got it right because I recall the Dialtune having a good amount of ring and overtones in a previous video. I'm a fan of the Black Beauty but I think the Dialtune sounded better in this comparison!

    A. Sounds great.... Perfect snare sound to me.
    B. Seems tuned lower.... Bit too boingy for my taste.

Hear a little more ring on B. Not a bad thing for me.

Did you try to tune them the same? The Dialtone's ring was harsher and had a long sustain.
Unfortunately I'm really adversely sensitive to snare ring (it's a Sensory Defensiveness thing) so I'm in a constant struggle to tone down or muffle the ring without losing the unique sound of each snare.
I can put a big fat snare mat on and it sounds great but I find if you muffle snares too much they all start to sound the same.
I want to buy a black beauty and I'm hoping if I call Ludwig they'll install an internal adjustable muffler for me.
    Thanx for the comparison.

They are indeed tuned the same. More overtones with the Dialtune for sure. As they say, you can always take out overtones but you can't put it back in.

Pre reveal comment: all I detect is that the overtones from drum B are a bit more pronounced (and lower in pitch?). I wonder if getting the snare side head tighter on drum B would minimize that difference.
    I like A more, personally.
    Thanks for making this video!

Post reveal comment: I'm honestly kinda sad 😆
I hoped to prefer the dialtune. But the difference is minimal, both drums sound awesome, and I'm sure that, with some tweaks, the Dialtune could sound even closer to what I want than it does here.
Request: Please show us how to make the Dialtune sound more like different depth snare drums, perhaps 5.5, 5 and 4 inch deep snare drums. I'm assuming that it's achievable with some dampening, and that by cranking the reso head, even the response could become similar (quicker), but I hope to see videos testing it out.

How'd I know? Cause drum B didn't sound as good. Not that B sounded bad, and it's a cool thing for simplified tuning.
