    I like the fact that you opt for paper over plastic bags. paper falls onto the ground, paper decays becomes dirt. Plastic falls on the ground, breaks up into very fine pieces, and it stays plastic in the soil. it does not become soil

      But like George Carlin said, plastic came from the Earth and maybe the Earth will embrace it as its own and incorporate it into its ecosystem. The guy was a hoot. lol

    Thank you for going over the whole process again. I know it's seems like you have done it all before but I really like watching it again. Never think that what you are showing is repeticious but it's why we come here, to see your operation and how you do things. Even if we have seen it a dozen times before, I want to see it again. I enjoy your filming methods and how you will speed up the video or play music when we wouldn't be able to hear you. Love your channel.

    Hey Molly sorry I missed commenting on the last video, but Hey I’m here to ask you some more dumb questions😊. As I was watching I couldn’t help but think I wonder what the history of Bell Farms is, when did it start ect ect. I’d love to see a video on the history of this family farm. To see from where it started to what it’s grown into today. That would be cool.

      Great, now to planting. Are the paper bags more expensive than the plastic and do the potatoes shelf life increase without any light? You know me, Mr Analyse man. Haha. Ty for posting. I have been eating a lot of potatoes and been eating some Goldens, Idaho and Russet. No DELICIOUS BELL farms taters yet, but I am sure they will be here before Christmas. (I hope so). Also what is the "buyers choice" as in size of bag they prefer? Lots of questions but I know you have the answers. Take care Molly.❤

    • @BellsFarming
      @BellsFarming  2 місяці тому

      @@alphaguy54paper bags do cost more than the plastic ones. They also have to be hung by hand, but on the wickets like the poly bags. So it does take quite a bit longer to bag them. When I say buyers choice, I mean the produce buyers at the warehouses make the call on what they want to buy from farmers. We used to sell a lot of 10lb paper bags to market basket. That was full tractor trailer loads at a time. But I think the buyers decided the 5lb bags were better for them. Kind of like using the blue market basket bags instead of the farm who grew them bags. It’s up to them.

    Howdy from Fort Erie Ontario Canada. Just found you on UA-cam and was immediately drawn to your channel and have subscribed. I follow several farming channels but was drawn to your because my Uncle Mac Laver had a potato farm on the outskirts of western Toronto and as a 12 year old kid my parents and I were called on to help cut the potatoes into the eyes for planting in the spring. The seed potatoes were buried in bags in a pit dug into the field. We also helped in the harvest, riding the sorter to take out the vegetation, rocks and any other items not wanted. The saving grace to this back breaking job was that we got to throw the rotten potatoes at each other. I also got to learn how to drive the old ford tractor in the fields after harvest. Many happy memories, so happy to follow you in these modern times. Ciao from this wannabe 81 year old farmer.

    Thanks for the explanation on wetting down the pile, as I wondered too. Also, the plastic vs. paper bag; it's nice seeing the Bell branding and gives the consumer a sense of connection back to the farm. I don't think many people realize the demands the buyer makes on the farmer (this type package, this size product, this variety of product, etc.) and that its challenging for the farmer to control some of it or any of it, and it's just the nature of the business. Always has been, and more than likely always will be. I wish I could find your product up here in Franklin county.

    I have trucked potatoes for WD out of Alliston, Ont, but have not been to Maine. Loaded out of the field and storage barns just like yours. The barns I’ve hauled out of had a trough in the middle. They used a 6in water hose washing the spuds into the trough to a conveyer right into our insulated trailer. Trucked potatoes to UTZ in Hanover, Pa and Frito in Binghamton NY. You have a wonderful farm, super job! Keep up the amazing work!😊

    Love to watch the process. What different types of potatoes has Bell done over the years. I haven't seen the planting process so looking forward to that. Hope to meet ya in person this summer when we stop by for corn and potatoes. Keep doing you, velcro lab Quigley😊

      You will get to see me this summer! You might have to drive around back to wave at me from the corn line! But we will definitely meet this summer. They have grown reds, and quite a few different varieties of yellows. I wanted to try a tinny patch of those purple ones for fun. But that didn’t go for it hahah

    I never thought that watching taters roll through conveyor belts would be entertaining and informative.
    Your videos give a deep appreciation the saying “farm to table”.
    Keep up the great work and most of all: stay safe.

    Your video channel is one of 3 farms that I watch whenever posted. Yours is by far the largest, most automated production! I see the others doing most of the work by hand, then watch your work being done by machines. I like the comparison!! Will you have videos of planting the fields?

      If they are treated properly for storage they can last 10 months or longer.

    Thanks Molly great watching and learning, and one more thing by the time you get this comment I think you’re getting dumped on with snow I sent your way from Iowa ….! I read about 50 farmers in Maine that tested their soil and it was contaminated with “the dreaded forever chemical “ what a story behind that?….?

    • @BellsFarming
      @BellsFarming  2 місяці тому

      Oh pfas is probably what you’re talking about. There is a lot of misinformation about pfas. Fluoride is a pfas, and it’s used to make the paper that most fast foods restaurants use to wrap their sandwich’s and line paper drinking cups. There is pfas is everything of daily life. It seems that some people just want to pick and choose where it’s allowed. Definitely put it in the drinking water. But if it’s found in the ground it ruins farm lands. I highly disagree with the way government is trying to handle it.

      Pfas is a huge topic to try and go over, but to add to Mollys response, I believe a lot of the farmland that tested high were location s where a lot of “sludge” was spread/ composted sewage.( we’ve never used that) And there was a paper mill issue I believe in central Maine but not sure the details. Either way, the stuff is everywhere and is sucks some people are losing their livelihood over it while other companies are still able to profit from it. My 2 cents . Thanks for watching the videos !

      Thanks to both of you I spend hours trying to find ways to avoid plastic bags, as per a warning 15 years ago that “The Health Ranger “ issued about this stuff in fertilizer being encouraged to use by (you guessed it) those watching the hen house. I realize by Molly’s comments that you folks get it.!!!!!! Really enjoy both of you and your hard work--Videos..

    Do potatoes that have been stored since fall spoil faster once you pack them. Seems like they grow alien things fast this time of the year after purchase.

      Honestly I think potatoes want to sprout all the time after they get into the grocery store. All the light and warmth of the store kicks that desire to sprout into motion.

    Ok I'm hooked. LOL I started watching when I found Laura Farms then I found 3 others you being one of the 3. I love your vids and I do have a question. I'm a trucker of many years and I'm 67 now but that don't mean anything about my question LOL. I see the spuds are wet from when he picks them up but how do they dry before the bagging? I ask because I see your clean up after and you guys are in mud under the machines. Some of them anyway. I check often for your new vids and I love them all even the other ones I watch. All my years on the road I have never pulled any farm loads I have 48 years out here and when I fully retire at the end of the year it will be 49.5 and about 4 million years. I do get up there by you. I have been to Bangor AF Base and Searsport. I pull a tanker. Thanks again.

      You make me laugh:) thank you. So there is a sling table that kinda dries the potatoes a little before they go into the newtec grader. But the potatoes are slightly wet when they go into the bag. They just dry in a day. What you should do when you retires is find a side gig working on a farm driving a potato truck or something seasonally for harvest! I bet you would really enjoy that. We have two guys that drive our potato trucks that are retired. They love it

    Hi Molly/Shane seeing how invested you all are in diesel equipment a company in British Columbia Canada called Edison Motors has built heavy haul diesel hybrid electric transports basically a diesel generator with electric Eaxels at about 700 HP they claim a 50 percent reduction in diesel cost might be an option for your fleet one other added benefit of this system is you also have a mobile power generation unit as well for power outages just a thought I really do enjoy all your videos cheers

      We are going to start picking up our seed on in Good Friday. We haul many loads back from the Aroostook county over the month of April. Usually plant late April early May.
