He Al, why don't you install some "curb stops" to avoid having to drain your whole water system? Curb stops are those valves that are usually installed underground out by a house's water meter. They can be shut on or off without any digging by also installing an empty riser pipe over them and using a 5 foot tall curb key to reach down the riser to the valve. And because they're underground, below the frostline, they don't freeze up in the winter. You can even get curb stops that include an automatic drain feature (like your hydrants) to isolate portions of your system that might freeze during the winter (eg the extension you're going to add going into your barn).
as per usual - good job - just dont forget the tractor door :)
Thanks for the reply about George. Hope they can get a replacement soon so to continue their plan.
Congratulates on a nice bumper crop of rocks this early in the season.
It was a good crop. 😆
Every good farmer has a great rock pile somewhere on their property. Yours will be seen from space soon 😂
@@vbtbmrt4394 that's funny but true
😂
Impressed by how hard you and Gina work. Look forward to all your new projects.
Goooooooood Morning Rich. Thanks for
Hello there to the Lumnah Family and all visitors to the OGP site from rainy 🌧 Minnesota! May all of our endeavors be blessed!
I'll tell you what. This is the first homestead channel I've seen that had a tragedy as yours just did. Once again I'm very sorry but I'll tell you something. It made your channel and y'all much more real. It is no game .
Have a great day to all in the Lumnah Universe
Goooooooood Morning Gin
Howdy Juergen! Hope all is well with you over in your neck of the woods!
Good morning from Arkansas
Good morning Al and Gina🌞 Yes, putting in several hundred feet of water line is a huge undertaking. Congratulations on the new hydrants and completing the job. Well done.🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love your channel and following along as your farm grows. 🥰❣️
Hey yall, I am glad the leak was where it was and not below. Like I said in your last video, removing so many big rocks, you will neem to find some fill. Good thing you have 500 acres to find fill. I really like the idea of a raised flower bed at the turn point to your home. Solar lights and maybe a flag pole.
The good thing about your property is, you will never have a shortage of rocks. You can throw a dart and dig, and you will find big rocks.
You sure have rocks of all sizes. Glad you have the waterlines all set again. Your machinery is not big but everyone has a job to do that saves a lot of back breaking work. Have a great day & keep smiling!
The Bobcat sure does save a lot of time and work on your backfill project. I can’t imagine how much time it would take without that thing. 👍
It was cute seeing the goats helping Miles eat his food!! ❤❤
Good company now that George is gone.
Apologies for being pedantic but it's Myles.
Good mauhnin Lumnah Acres and friends! Hope everyone is doing well, have been on a family vacation. Back now rested and rejuvenated! Wishing everyone a wonderful week!
Goooooooood Morning Elizabeth.
Good morning, Elizabeth - glad to hear you had some vay-kay, creating some family memories that become priceless over time!
I'm so glad to hear you got to visit your family. I got to have my three son's with me at my oldest son's girlfriend's family cabin this weekend and it was a blast! My oldest son has a wonderful girlfriend he's been with for 7 years and her family loves him too. It's great to have them all together. I had his brothers when he was in his early twenties and it's so fun to have them together. They all play musical instruments and like music and like to jam together. They also like video games so they played on a Nintendo Switch game together huddled around the little screen and beat the whole game. So fun to watch. And they put a 3D puzzle together of Spiderman and also exchanged Christmas gifts since I've been away for most of 6 months getting health help. So much fun. I really love my son's girlfriend and she's so much fun to talk to. The "boys" played and we got to visit. Perfect weekend for me!
@@StoneKathryn - Sounds like you had a wonderful time that you'll think back on warmly for a long time!
Al, you just did a whole bunch of extra work, that leak was from a packing gland. Just tighten the nut one or two flats the leak should stop. You will have to do that as time goes by .
That is what it looked like to me also.
The water was getting up to the packing gland with the hydrant off, which means the water was flowing through the valve faster than it could drain out of the weep hole. You're right that the leak would stop by tightening the packing gland nut, but the pipe would still be filled with water.
@@davidhuestis2110 Yes he could tighten it and test it with air pressure, and if it is fixed, then save it for a spare or for a new location.
Hi Al,Gina,Brutus. Well that was an adventure but excellent to have all the extra water supply & have to say Brutus is getting big.
Take care happy family.
Goood Morning modern steaders!! Gina, Al, Olivia, I hope things are getting a little better after your lousy week last week, hang in there. peace, love and hugs, Edman

Exactly - one more item checked... an endless more to do as they are never-ending with 500 acres! Take care, Eric!
@@samvalentine3206 working for yourself is a good thing!!!!!!!!!!
Good morning, I wanted to let you know that the leak by the handle is an easy fix. The nut that is on the hydrant is called a packing nut. As you use the hydrant this can start leaking and just needs to be tightened. After many years of use you may need to replace or add to the packing but it can all be done at the top of the hydrant. Many blessings to you!
Buy/rent a rock crusher to make a gravel pile from all those rocks. ;) And, next time you make changes to your water delivery system, add shutoff switches for every fork/branch so you don't have to shut the whole system down when making fixes or changes down the line.
That's a good idea. Maybe he'll do that. That did seem a real pain to have to drain the whole system again to fix that one spigot. Have a great week!
Great job, Al and Gina. Thanks for sharing.
Hello my friend, I hope you are well. love ya!
@@homesteadedman4784 Hi Edman. Hugs.

Oh, nice that Miles has the goats & Brutus for friends!

Good morning from Gatwick wishing you all a pleasant and peaceful day 🎉
Goooooooood Morning Hyland
Al I'd put a couple of rocks around the water supply by barn to stop anyone driving into it
Goooooooood Morning Andrew. Yes we need to do something by the barn
I hate to tell the bad news but Organic only refers to the fertilizer that they use. It still gets all the Pesticides sprayed on it . Worked in the business for over 20 years.
Al, the brass fitting (packing nut) where the leak was has packing material underneath it. If it starts leaking, you just tighten it down until the leak stops.
Good morning Al,Gina and all family and friends at Lumnah off grid ROCK FARM, come pick your own rocks ! I think the best investment today has been the Bob Cat-E42, it is always working somewhere. It is so good to see Miles, Hope, Daisy and Brutus all getting along so well. Have a great day and keep picking rocks.
My goodness, You work so hard. It is so nice to have water where You need it ! I LOVE YOU ALL !!! 🥰 🥰 🥰
Maybe you covered this earlier but could you put a normal ball valve a few feet away from the hose thing to provide you with a shut off so you don't have to drain down the whole system
Maybe place a few of the stones in a circle around the hydrants to prevent accidental bumping into by vehicles or animals...? And it would make a nice landscape touch.
Good morning Al, Gina, Olivia and all the Lumnah friends and extended family, hope everyone has a great week

Good morning, Lloyd - a great morning, thanks! Hope yours is too!
Al, looks like all you needed to do was cinch down the packing nut. 1/4 turn should do it.
I always put a 5 gallon bucket at the bottom of the hole and all connections inside the bucket, saves rock. The way you do it is fine l just never had enough stone to do it your way.

Good morning from 106° temperature, Mesa, AZ.
Just a but warm; however, it feels cooler when i watch Al & Gina on the OTG property. Things are getting better, just takes time. It gets so frustrating when you have air in the lines.

That sort of cleanup is what makes a 12’ towed land-leveler behind the tractor an excellent implement for landscaping and maintaining roads. A 3 point hitch box grader is useful, but it’s not speedy, and if you have a wide road or a large area to level, it gets a little tedious. Plus the towed blade isn’t affected by the tractor being out of level.
Maybe you should put a shutoff in the line so you don’t have to drain the tank every time!
No Al you want things fixed right like that faucet. And I don't blame you at all make sure it's fixed right to begin with, that would definitely Not in your character to let things slide and not fix them Proper, you are a awesome Jack of all trades Thumbs up to you buddy
The hydrant was leaking at the packing nut. If you just tighten that nut a little just until the water stops leaking. Don't over tighten it or it will make the handle harder to pull. You can also replace the packing under that nut and it's pretty simple to do. If any of the other hydrants start leaking around that stem later on you can do the same to those too.
We had one like that and nothing would work to fix it. The name on it was Conrad. The handle was falling apart and it was leaking at the top. We couldn't find any parts. We had to dig it up by hand and replace it. The Woodford spigot we replaced it with is much easier to adjust and much sturdier. Some of these spigots just wear out and you can't fix them. I'd get rid of it if it leaked at the top right from the get go. Have a great day!
@@StoneKathryn You can buy packing at a plumbing or hardware store and it looks like a piece of rope that you cut to make a circle around the stem where the nut is. Back the nut completely out and tuck the packing in so the seams touch and put as many as you can in there to be able to thread the nut and stagger the seams so to prevent a leak through the seams. I promise you these things can be fixed. I did this for a living for many years.
Wow fantastic JOB Al and Gina. A whole lot of work and effort went in on this project. GREAT JOB. Like the saying goes: " A WHOLE LOT OF WATER" YIPPEEE!!! God Bless you ALL
A job well done! Congratulations! 👍👍👏👏👏
Good morning! I’m glad the new water lines are working. You’re going to have plenty of big rocks for decorating the homestead. Maybe you could put a few around the lake to sit on when you’re fishing.
Good job y’all. Great video. Glad you’ve got all of that done. 👍❤️
Think about adding a couple of cutoff valves along your waterlines so you can make repairs and/or add to the system without having to drain the entire system!😊
We are doing this to our 1988 house- it was built with only 1 cutoff!
Great suggestion. Add a curb key just at the exit of the storage tank. Yes, it will need dug up at that area, but in the long run might save a lot of aggravation.
I remember when you tried using an ibc tot for your spring water system then had to purchase the current buried one. Things have changed so much. Your farm is improving, I look forward to each video.
Leak checking, mat near the pipe stand to protect the drainage, walking the line, and starting with covering by hand is some next level measure twice, cut once craftmanship. That is a prime example of why I enjoy your build projects, you are always looking twenty years later, not twenty minutes quicker. 10/10 would hire again
Your broken hydrant reminded me of a problem I had many years ago at work. When fiber to the home first rolled out there was a unit installed that converted the fiber data to copper data so you could connect the phone, pc or whatever. We had a time when one of them didn't work so we replaced it. And it didn't work. I installed a known working unit from another apartment and it worked fine. Ended up trying 5 new units before we got one that worked. "New" stuff that doesn't work makes you a little crazy.
You know Al what would be really awesome, at your other homestead you had stonewalls, maybe you made them or maybe they was on the property when you moved in either way these type of Stonewall they remind me of the old-fashioned farms, just the way I look at your farm but only with a big twist nothing but high technology. But it does look normal, not realizing it's 100% off grid that is awesome. Just a suggestion I always love them old stonewalls. Not that you don't have a beautiful beautiful farm I love watching your videos you and Gina are awesome. Don't see your daughter much at all but I'm sure she's like dad and mom. Have a great day Al and Gina
You will have to consider what kind of project you can undertake in the long term to use up the great pile of rocks you have collected. Glad to see you got all the underground water supply in place and located the leaks. Good job
Read the directions for the faucet. You can adjust that nut to stop the leaking.
It's brand new. It shouldn't leak. If he touched it it would void the warranty. Best to replace it. Have a great day!
One of the things I love about you, Al... I'm sure you get frustrated sometimes, especially with a new pump that comes in defective, but you never SHOW it on camera.
Good morning from East TN..Another great video from Lumnah Acres!!
Goooooooood Morning Ron. Thank you
Gina’s going to love all those rocks to frame in her Secret Garden.
Glad you could things fixed!
Love seeing the goats eat out of the same dish as Miles❤❤
Put a hook on the barn wall to hang the hose up. Plus something to keep the rest of the hoses off the ground
After watching you do two days work in thirty two minutes I'm wore out. I look forward to watching you every Tues, thur, and Saturday. Enjoy watching your progress.
I am so proud of you guys and how much you have accomplished. Yes bad heartbreaking things have happened but hopefully you guys are able to think of all of the good plans and things you have done. I am a ok sorry about gearge.
George?
All, in the future I would set the bucket down on the ground before you load it with rocks. That way it would take the strain from the cylinder on the tractor.
You need to build a rock wall like you had at the last homestead. So jealous I only have sand and clay.
Hooray.....NO LEAKS. Tks for video. Much love to ya.
Tighten that packing just a bit to see if it stops the leak, if not then it likely has a torn o-ring. Those things are completely rebuildable even after buried, I've done ours twice.

How old is Brutus now. He seems to be growing before my eyes. He’s beautiful.
Probably some packing down in that brass fitting. Turn it closed with a wrench. I bet the water leak will stop.
Al, that’s a packing nut on the top. Tightening it down will squeeze the packing tighter. If it is to tight, it’s hard to open the hydrant. Too loose it leaks. As you use the hydrant over the years it may start to leak, just tighten it down till it stops and your good to go.
We destroyed the homestead????

You should have Shut Off valves on each hydrant..Then you wouldn't have to drain everything when there's a Problem 🎉
You have enough rocks you could start a low rock wall all around your pastures Like they use to do in the past.
Progress at Lumnah Acres looking great !!
Great to have water up to the barn area ! God Bless you guy's!
Lot of nice rock for Gina's rock wall.
perseverance... well done and an encouragement to many who are also going through hard things. God bless you and your homestead!

Al, you are so meticulous, it's wonderful to watch. You and your family are definitely blessed. God bless.
You got it done. God bless.
@ 23:45 if the trench is lower after the install you could just sow grass seed and use as a swale to channel some of the water coming from the upper elevations / might be useful to control some of the run off preventing erosion ?
Good morning Lumnah's! Always seems to be a hiccup will happen on a job. Makes life interesting. Huge project accomplished.

Looks fantastic. Lots of work. TY F S.
Good morning Al and Gina! Always something to do on a Homestead.
Great progress thanks for sharing❤️🙏🙂
Farm life, ever evolving. Great work guys.
Good morning. The leak that you had on the hydrant looked like it was a loose packing nut. You might have more of those as the hydrants get used so just tighten the packing nut a little at a time until the leak stops. If you pull it too tight at any given time it may cause the valve to be very difficult to operate and cause premature failure. You can also replace the packing as the valves get older. That will save you a lot of time and effort in the future. Find out what size packing it requires and pick up some at your local plumber's supply house to keep on hand for the inevitable leaks from normal wear and tear. I hope this helps. Have a great day.
Good advice. We assume Al tried tightening the brass packing nut where the thru-rod goes... kind of academic now as it's been replaced. Might be needed in the future though... so good idea!
sometimes the fitting that is screwed in cracks when tightening with Teflon which can be over-tightened and you don't realize how much force that you put to it as Teflon makes things slide so well.
Awesome!!! It's gonna be a complete game changer for ya'll with all these water lines❤ Great job Al and Gina
I like that you used all brass fittings - no PVC. Smart!!
