Hey Lars, I tried to learn Fusion 360 5 years ago and stuck with 123D Design. You are so easy to follow and a very good teacher. You speak slow enough to follow and are very comprehend-able. I am sure with the help of your videos that I will be able to succeed this time. Thanks and God bless you.
Could you do an updated version of this video with the latest edition of Fusion 360? Right out of the gate, Model is now Design, which threw me off of even being able to get started. I use fusion 360 once or twice a year, while I work amongst a lot of other technologies. So I always watch THIS video first, before I start a new project. I've seen it 10 times. Thanks, Lars
Hey Lars, is there any chance of an update series with the new UI? Tried to follow you but things work differently now. Couldn’t get my lines to turn from blue to black. Super frustrating. I’m sure a new series would be very popular
I actually don't understand why people don''t like this video, I know some terms and locations are different now, but doesn't take that much to understand the new version of what he's saying and he's actually done an amazing job!! Thank you a lot!

Many thanks for teaching me how to model something in the same time it took to watch your beginner 1,2,3 videos. I honestly thought it would take me a year to get that far but in one afternoon I designed a conduit box to my own measurements and then changed it to a gearbox case idea! It only took a good teacher like you to make it all fall into place. 3 months later and I'm designing things I thought would have taken me years to learn. thank you soo much!!!!
Hello, I am not an engineer, I am an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. I am less than a beginner in 3D modeling and sketching. I tried to look for many videos to start learning but I have to admit that you are perfect in explaining things to guys like me and you really know how to present your ideas and to explain why. Thumbs up, thumbs up and thumbs up. I will continue watching your videos and I hope I find w-hat I am looking for. Foe example I have stl files for mandible and stl file for bone plate, and I am trying to virtually bend this plate on the outer contour of the mandible. I hope I can find a solution here
I happened to choose your three part beginner video when starting out in Fusion 360 over all the other channels available. I can’t imagine anyone else could have put together a better beginner tutorial and I feel no need to look elsewhere on UA-cam as I continue to learn this software. Over these three quick and concise videos I have gone from confused and frustrated to having a great grounding in the fundamentals of Fusion 360 and an appreciation of the power of parametric modelling. Thanks Lars
Newbie to Fusion 360 writing on 12/19/20. Helpful video, enjoy the slow pace. BUT... the video could use updating, because the menus and short cuts have changed in the past two years. Although, having to search around to find the current location of the commands (particularly the shortcuts, which have changed) had its own value in familiarizing me with the menus and helping me find my way around.
Hi Lars, thanks for the great videos. This one seems to be very out of date based on the current version of Fusion 360 (12/17/2020). I hope you will consider revising this video series to make it useful again.
Lars you're a frickin' legend. I've wanted to learn a cad program for years and I've learnt how to use fusion in a weekend watching your videos. Thank you so much.
After a traumatic brain injury, I have had to re-evaluate a lot of my life. Though looking at a screen is not the best for me I am able to take breaks as needed which was one of my reasons for focusing to get into the world of 3D printing. Most information is boring and you make it fun. I also appreciate that it is not "too simplified" as this has encouraged me to explore the program a little more to fill in the few gaps that I needed more explanation on. In just 48 hours I went from yelling at the screen in frustration to creating the thing that was in my head, better than my mind could think of. Thank you for, as you said, filling in the gaps that most other tutorials leave out, and keeping the videos shorter for those that do not want a lecture, yet still want to learn. It made going back to some of the more boring videos better since what they under explain you got just right. Mainly, best practices. Using Components to separate sketches and bodies has made working with this program much better for me.
Fusion has changed since the video, but I figured it out. If you can't figure it out by pausing and searching you need to step back some. I am very new to this, ie: never touched CAD or modeling. Love the effort put in, on two part 2!
We'll first thing I learned on this today was the newer version which I have doesn't refer to model anymore. It's now Design. I was able to follow along keeping in mind some things that are not the same but have the same outcome👍
Best tutorial I have seen. Amazing how much I learned in this short tutorial. I did 5 of the fusion360 tutorials and by the end was so confused I gave up because nothing worked and my settings were so screwed up it was beyond saving. I couldn´t make a box with rounded corners in over 3 hours using their tutorials. Altogether after almost 7 hours and 4 attempts and start overs I didn´t get as far as you just took me in 20 minutes and I actually understand what I did. Even doing fusions own tutorials going step by step I end up lost because they don´t tell you what things do. They also assume you know what their terms and tiny symbols mean. Even just knowing you have to turn the lines from blue to black is not explained in their tutorials or what clicking those things does even though you use those relationship symbols in the tutorial. You just click buttons und hope you don´t accidentally click once to much because that will put it in the wrong one of 30 modes and you will never get back to the right place.
loved your advice on relationships, been having some trouble with my girlfriend and it helped alot. I've tied her down now and given her a bunch of rules and she seems happy this way!
Watched this and managed to make a pretty intricate thing in Fusion 360 despite the difference in interface. Watch the video and use the core pieces of it.
hey!! Never had a chance to thank you for the tutorial. It opened the doors of CAD for me having no prior experience, and now im making crazy stuff with my 3d printer. You're awesome!
The version I'm using - 2.0.8412 on Windows 10 - doesn't have quite the same keystrokes, and this makes for some confusion, especially with Press Pull, where it appears you need to get into a kind of 3D view for it to work at all. In the upper left is a square that might say "TOP", and if you put your mouse in the cube and click+drag, you can change the perspective; then Q=Press Pull works as described.
Hi Lars I am a total beginner from Darkness in Denmark and have today been recommended to learn Fusion 360, and am glad that I came across your video so I can learn something from you.
This video is great, but it would be great if you did an updated version of it because there are plenty of changes that have been made to the program, such as the Model environment is now called something else.
Fking A!!! Was trying to figure out how to start with fusion 360 for about 2 hours. Couldn't understand even how to start a sketch. This 20 minutes video made me feel like a professional now🙏🙏🙏🙏
Awesome tutorial for beginners! I recommend going through it more than once before moving on to a new tutorial. Good to learn and memorize functions before learning others. Thanks!
i have no idea if you are stil reading this but i really love the way you explain it really simple. i did design a lot years ago in autodesk inventor and solidworks so the whole introduction to top down assembly was very well explained and i did start over with my latest design. i do have a question: you made the first extrusion and then the sketch with offset 4mm. then you extruded that down to make a box out of the block. and extruded that 4 mm to object . is it possible to reference the second 4mm to the first? we don't type in the 4 mm in de cut extrution to object but use the first so second distance = first distance . ( hope my question makes sense )
Lars, your content has helped so much. I spent hours trying to make some basic parts on my own with pretty poor results. After watching just this video I created a functional part in about 30 minutes. Big thank you and much love from California!
Unfortunate that so much of the UI has been moved around or changed since this was made. I love your teaching style but it's very frustrating to be following along and keep having to stop because what I need to do is no longer there. Then I have to scan around and look for where something has been relocated or renamed, sometimes having to go to a search engine to find the solution. It makes learning with this video go from what should feel like a joy to truly laborious.
Thank you very much for your in-depth teaching! I gained some CAD knowledge in HS about 6 years ago and am starting to get back into it as a hobby. Based on this video, I look forward to using your other videos to get me back on track!
im enjoying your videos but having difficulty cause the new version of fusion 360 the commands are different and I cant get passed the extrusion part. the "Q" command doesn't work for me and im stuck having a circle on my screen. getting discouraged. but i really want to learn this..
Just watched the video and followed along. Had some issues with push/pulling the second time around to get the depth of the box, not sure what happened but eventually got it. When switching from the top to the bottom of the box how did you rotate the view to the bottom? I don't think you talked about that shortcut in the video unless you've got others I should watch first.
I watch a lot of instructional videos and this is really refreshing. Its is accurate, interesting, and straight to the point, with limited waffle about unnecessary crap. Looking forward to the rest.
That's what's so frustrating about this, learn it and walk away for 5 mins, they have changed it and need to learn all over again. Within the 1st 5 mins of the video, the "model" selection isn't there anymore!
Hi Lars, Great Video. Being an X military instructor I like the fact that you, unlike most youtubers, start at the very basic beginning of each project. One thing I would suggest is that you both enlarge and turn your cursor to black in color. In some of your presentations I could not follow exactly where you moved cursor before you initiated the command.
great tutorial man I am making the jump from tinker cad to this. I am going to print the box (I made it along with you.) I am hoping that the quality is better! btw the fillet option WOW that's so cool and so much easier than joining transparent plains to whole ones. much more stable cause it's not in a browser
I am learning fusion 360 and out of all the other videos yours has been the best, the way you explain the software is clear and not confusing keep it up. Definitely thumbs up.
This is the best video I've seen on the basics of Fusion 360! Subscribed. I'm a Designer/Engineer and have had experience with computer software. However, the other people who have presented the basic training jump around or go through things assuming that someone is familiar with the software! Thanks, Lars! BTW, are you originally from New England? Your accent sounds like Mass. or Rho-Disland.
This is really helpful. The only issue is, I'm using the 2021 version so a lot of commands are no longer in the same place. Either way, it's a great introduction. Additional comment: I tried drawing a line from the bottom upwards and it won't let me. If I move up and to an angle, the line only moves along the base and there's no way I can change it to create an angle.
Hi Lars, I probably first saw this video a year ago - and now i'm back a year later, ready to follow along with fusion. if i recall, your video(s) were the best I've seen, and i can't wait to follow along with more of them - THANK YOU!
Maybe need to update your tutorial? As the UI seems to be very different from this today. Top first menu; selected “Model” on mine it’s “Design”. Then the origin looks different and is turned, half the items in the “Sketch Pallet” are missing. Typing’S’ brings up Design shortcuts and a search for the same item did not work out. Will have to see how much else is different…. Great help so far, thx shame one can’t follow through.
Thank you Lars, you understand that someone completely new often needs to see the very first mouse kick in order to get started, I wish more how to video makers realised this, thank you, John from Sunny Devon UK
Thanks a lot for these videos. After going through ALL the basic tutorials one evening I found yours the next and in just two days from point zero I am able to create amazing stuff with incredible precision that is unthinkable with Tinkercad.
Hi, Great videos! but I think I'm right in saying that the current version (Oct 2019) has a new UI interface and the 'Model' mode is now dead and 'Desgn' mode replaces it. Using the old functionality UI has also been removed. That in mind the vids are still relevant.
Even though this video is 4 years dated, the way you explain the concepts is timeless and transcends any updates to the software. I tried another more up-to-date video, but after the first lesson, I didn't know why I was doing what I was doing, and ultimately it was a waste of time. Thanks so much for putting out this video and your series!
@@JustMike2791 I don't think you're an idiot. We probably just have different ways of learning things that's all. When I watch the video, it makes me think of how I would go about making a cake. I start with the bottom 2d sketch of the cake(e.g a circle), then add layers(i.e extrude) to the cake (e.g the fillings toppings etc.). The tools I use are not as important to me as the concept of starting with something 2 Dimensional, and then adding layers/extruding the 2 dimensional shape to a 3d model.
Nice informative video , but it's a bit obsolete now that the interface has changed, couldn't follow in practice at the same time. The absolute beginner here will try to figure the changes with the new version.
Lars, Many thanks, these are the most intuitive Fusion videos I have watched on YT. I have been pulling out my hair trying to make sense of this software and your set of videos have been the answer to my prayer. Thank you. Regards Paul
They are pretty cool. Prices aren't bad either. I think soon it will follow the paper printing market. Sell the machine fairly cheap. Make the money on the filament.

I know it's an old video, I downloaded the hobbiest version of Fusion 360. I was thinking I could deal with the interface differences, but I couldn't figure out the offset command. I've never worked with 3d modeling, but I kept thinking there should be an offset edge; I couldn't get offset plane or face to work like you did in video. Can anyone recommend a current video that similar to this? I like the author presentation and style of teaching.
Hello Barry I think I had exactly the same issue as you. Where I tried several times to activate the offset as Lars did and one I did not get the red rectangle to manipulate and two I did not get the handles or whatever they are called on the sides. I tried several times but got the same result. By progressing regardless I just discovered that what I did get was an offset plane or surface that was above the box. It might just be a difference in the version of software or perhaps I’m not understanding something that Lars was saying. I too would appreciate any suggestions.
I know this is years old, but I just wanted to thank you for this and your other tutorials. I started with them a few years ago, knowing nothing about parametric modelling, and now I use F360 every day for work and feel... if not an expert, quite comfortable in it. Hi lars. I'm new to CAD and Fusion 360. i know this video was uploaded 5 years ago. My basic screen looks different. Where yours has a box in the upper left corner saying Model, mine says Design, and the drop down menu is different. Has the layout been redesigned or have you configured the screen differently? EDIT: I see that the design has been updated since this video. I will learn the basic stuff first on another video then come back here as I like your style and explanations of why. Just racing through builds doesnt teach you the why.

First, I am trying to learn by 'Monkey see, monkey do' and the first thing I see is 'MODEL' on the topleft corner - I don't have that, I have 'DESIGN'. I am going to presume that Fusion360 has changed since 2016 when the video was made. It just makes me wary what else may have changed.
Now I have watched the 2nd video in the series and I am starting to get excited about the capabilities of the software. I am converting my 3D modelling mind from SketchUp to Fusion, the former was my 'quick and dirty' solution to CAD for 3D printing. Already I see solutions to the features (lack of) that frustrated me before.
@@roberttownshend3050 sounds super cool! just keep going i think it will get easier along the way (after i have watched the video i'm gonna say what i learned
I watched the videos - several times - and set about making my first 'real' design. I have done a few quick small components, a collar with holes, a support column and about a year ago I took a dxf file of a gear profile, extruded it on Fusion360 and 3D printed an intermediate gear for my mini-lathe. This time I needed a rack for my small (4mm - 11mm) spanners. It took a couple of hours and several changes of direction in the way I did the CAD, but when I got to the final stage and mirrored the two sides to make the rack, I felt that I had started to get a grasp of how to do things. The rack was 3D printed and is now in use. I am sure that Fusion360 will be much the same as learning a musical instrument. Uncertainty at first and a lot of hesitation and mistakes, but with practice I hope I will get more fluent.
First time ever using Fusion 360. I have the newest version out. I had a little trouble following your steps as the screens were different. BUT I did manage to make the part and it turned out just like yours did. I will probably go back and watch this video several times to see the steps again and take notes. I tried watching other videos on UA-cam and got lost within the first several minutes. Thank you for "breaking the ice" for me!!

5 years later and this video is still VERRY helpful!! Just wish you had a class I could attend..
Lars, Bless you my friend, I have wanted to learn CAD for years but till I retired never took the time; embarrassing for someone who lives in Autodesk’s home town [San Rafael,CA]. I am 2 vids into your Intro to Fusion series & love the presentation, so clear and so logical; this gives me hope I can actually master this great tool. Well, back to school. -Take Care & Thanks
From the other comments, there are lots of other changes that can be confusing for a beginner. Thanks for this video!
most of the stuff is pretty same...
@@jithamanyusettur3163 Looks pretty different to me. Maybe if you were used to the previous versions it's a minor change, but I'm new and so many of these menus and options aren't in front of me. Or maybe have different names? Heck if I know. I'd love to see an updated tutorial.
@@KurtSchwindu can start with this ua-cam.com/play/PLmN15diDm2iKJ_snJ60QpUUMcte19QaTs.html and then get some familiarity with updated version then u can come back to this....
This is great! I just started playing with fusion360 after using Sketch for a few years. This video was very easy to follow. Looking forward to learning more!
You are a great teacher, your English is impeccable, and you are beautiful.
Thank you 😊
I actually don't understand why people don''t like this video, I know some terms and locations are different now, but doesn't take that much to understand the new version of what he's saying and he's actually done an amazing job!! Thank you a lot!
Great Start! I've been banging my head trying to understand this software. No one else explains it so logically. Thanks a lot Lars!
You are so very welcome :-) Thank you for watching!
Lars' orientation is Y axis up. That setting is accessed by clicking on you profile circle at the upper left, then Preferences -> General - > Default Modeling Orientation. Choose: Y up
Many thanks for teaching me how to model something in the same time it took to watch your beginner 1,2,3 videos.
I hope I can find a solution here
Any way you can do an updated video? I tried following this and I couldn't using the latest version.
2020 quarantine skill learning, whoop whoop. appreciate the content!
Me too :D
Me three!
Thank you so much for taking the time to produce such informative and educational videos.
You are so very welcome!
Happy to hear that you found the content useful. Thank you for writing and for watching!!
this tutorial needs to be redone. 6 years of updates its now completely different
Yeah, I had to keep canceling and figuring some things out on my own. But in all, it was a really helpful video.
Thanks!
Just starting on 3d modeling.. Awesome tutorial! thanks. subcribed!
i have no idea if you are stil reading this but i really love the way you explain it really simple. i did design a lot years ago in autodesk inventor and solidworks so the whole introduction to top down assembly was very well explained and i did start over with my latest design. i do have a question: you made the first extrusion and then the sketch with offset 4mm. then you extruded that down to make a box out of the block. and extruded that 4 mm to object . is it possible to reference the second 4mm to the first? we don't type in the 4 mm in de cut extrution to object but use the first so second distance = first distance . ( hope my question makes sense )
Lars, your content has helped so much. I spent hours trying to make some basic parts on my own with pretty poor results. After watching just this video I created a functional part in about 30 minutes. Big thank you and much love from California!
"Relationships impose rules that tie you down"... Giving 3D help AND being a scholar... nice
Thanks for letting me know. I just realized the video is over 7-years old. Need something more recent.
Lars - could you re-make this series featuring the latest version of Fusion 360, please?
So out of date for new (2020) users. But I"m sure it was good when it was current back then. Back to searching. Thanks!
It worked for me
That's what's so frustrating about this, learn it and walk away for 5 mins, they have changed it and need to learn all over again. Within the 1st 5 mins of the video, the "model" selection isn't there anymore!
@@bbjunkie model = design.
Same situation. I love tinkercad but it's time to move beyond
You only forgot to tell press shift and hold roll mouse button. Awesome video.
THANKS
Thanks.
I'm in NH and that dosent sound like a New England accent to me. I was guessing he's from Europe.
I just watched part 2 and he's pronouncing his "R's" and hasn't said "wicked" once haha
OK, what version are you using, coz your's completely different from the new version online.
Looks like it's time to make a new video. I just downloaded Fusion 360 [january 2021] and the menu options etc. have changed.
same lmao
Please revise to match the 2023 edition. Menus are not the same, easy to get lost trying to follow your otherwise excellent instruction! Thanks!
Echoing other comments here... an updated version of this video series would be fantastic
Unfortunately, I must respectfully disagree. I tried it and got lost SO fast. Or, maybe I'm an idiot.
I know this video is a few years old but THANK YOU.
Every comment is from the past couple weeks. A lot of people must have gotten 3D printers this holiday season or something 😂
They are pretty cool. Prices aren't bad either. I think soon it will follow the paper printing market. Sell the machine fairly cheap. Make the money on the filament.
Thank you, Mr. Christensen, for my making my 10-year-old grandchild a life-long Autodesk user.
Wow that's awesome, I'm 17 and I can't even imagine being able to do this at 10 years old
GREAT Video Lars! Very instructional and super easy to understand. I just bought a 3d printer for my business, and I needed to learn how to draw in a CAD software. This video is perfect for beginners. I'm heading now to watch part 2!
I am trying to learn Fusion 360 for personal use and it seems like there are significant differences between my version and the one Lars use. I.e. I can't offset the rectangle. I think.
you may have to update your video a bit.. I just got Fusion and some of the menus have changed.
Really nice! Concise, right to the point, no unnecessary small talk, different ways to come to solutions and pitfalls. Exactly what I needed! Right speed and no unmentioned clicks. Thank you very much! I am looking forward to listening to the other tutorials.

I have the same version, I clicked on the edge of the shape to use offset, hope it helps
Can you do a new beginners video for the latest fusion 360 2022 Thanks
Bro it's all the same
Agree. There are so many UI changes now it's next to impossible to follow along in the application.
@@RipleysPuzzles This is not true. I just went through the whole thing and the differences, if any, are minor.
I know this is years old, but I just wanted to thank you for this and your other tutorials. I started with them a few years ago, knowing nothing about parametric modelling, and now I use F360 every day for work and feel... if not an expert, quite comfortable in it. Thank you for getting me started off so well.
Thank you so much, Rose. Really appreciate the kind words. Happy you find the content helpful.
Lars: “Relationships are really important.”
Me: I know, I wish I had one.
Hang in there my friend :-) you will find yours, I'll be rooting for you!!
Lars Christensen oh wow! You really do respond to each and every comment, talk about commitment!
This was absolutely incredible and eye opening for me. I've held off getting a 3d printer as i didn't want to just make keychains or things in tinkerclad. I can't wait to see the rest of your series, and learn whatever else you're willing to teach - THANK YOU!

Please remake this series for the 2020 version of fusion 360!
Yes, I just tried this tonight and it looks different and I quickly lost the way
@@dereksmith7770 lol his instruction is the easiest ive seen so far. So i loaded the program and was like woah. This is not what i signed up for lol. I found someone else who imo isnt as good. But still really detailed and slow. Ill shout him out if i can find it again.
After 40 hours with other software, I found this, I’ve learned more in the last two hours than last week’s nightmare. Big Thanks!
@19:55 You lost me at "scrollover". How do you do that? You didnt mention how. Thanks.
I only get design on my free trial and no model drop down. Is this tutorial for licensed version?
Agreed looking for it cause it's not looking the same. I got to box and height but stumbling around
It would be nice to see you do a SelfCAD intro!
I think your videos are just fine as well :-)
Looks like selfcad is for 3d printing and artists not for enginers while fusion is a more complex software targeting enginers

Best "how to" of any software I have ever watched!! well done can't wait to dive in
Lars, when I use the Q function for Press Pull after the Offset command the box doesn't autorotate so I can negatively extrude the middle section away... any ideas?
I am stuck on this as well. Have not found a answer on line either.
Did you click on the bottom object?
Marcus Aurelius Yes... It was not working on the 3yo version I was using. Had to upgrade to the latest version. All appears to be working fine now but having some other issues. Not at computer right now. Thanks for your videos 🙏
I had that problem too.
I clicked a step Back and forward and then it worked.
I guess its a common Bug they don´t fix.
Lars, have you given any thought to updating / revisiting this content? The Fusion 360 UI has changed quite a bit, and for beginners it's a bit frustrating.
Derek, has same question as you, hard to follow when a lot of names, positions and ..... have changed. If it is meant to help a tru beginner, please update screen shots /Dan
This is the best tutorial I have come across, I think you could improve it by always saying what area you are clicking on- by doing so it gets put in the transcript. Personally, I find it difficult to listen and simultaneously navigate. So, having the transcript, with a minimum of missing details makes it easier. Thank you Lars.
