The animation is genuinely fine. I honestly never did and still don’t understand why people think it’s bad. The textures are shit, but the facial expressions are completely fine.
Imagine what the kids in the train cars went through during the whirly-derly, heart-stopping, concussion-causing, bone-breaking rollercoaster ride without warning it was going to happen.
I don’t know if anyone came up with this theory already, but I always thought the conductor was the adult version of the kid. It makes sense why the conductor is aware of the kid’s choices on the journey🤔
I like that theory, I just thought since they work for Santa that they knew everything and wanted the kids to right their wrongs so they keep believing in a way that allows them to find the answers themselves and get to meet Santa.
When this movie came out on DVD my whole family sat down in the living room with coco and watched it for the first time together some time around the beginning of December. Then we kids proceed to watch it almost everyday till that Christmas. This weird experiment of a movie holds a special place in my heart and it was a blast seeing Benji discover the spirit of Christmas in "real time". 😂
@@PinkPopcast He really is! 😬😰 I was like 4 or 5 years old when I saw that part for the FIRST. TIME. And back then, I would always run away from our living room when we had our family movie night every Christmas.

the spirit of christmas is to remind folks as a group to celebrate joy, family, child-like playfulness, & warm feelings. The film called The Man who Invented Christmas talks about charles dickens creating his novel A Christmas Carol as a warning message during a period of time when industrial culture was making the community very cold, dull, & depressing. Christmas spirit is to remember it's okay to bring color & hope into life :)
I always liked The Polarexpress because of the internal growth the children go through. Billy: learns to open up and to trust in others. Anybody who isn’t subscribed to their Patreon, go do it now! It’s definitely worth it. All I’m saying is that Benji has a specific theory of what the elf’s are doing ones Santa is on his way and they’re all alone 🤣🤣🤣
I remember watching this once in school for Christmas free day (a day with no classes just hang outs) and do you know with all the scenes where they are riding into the North Pole through the arches. The fake houses, the kids in pyjamas on the train and all the elves marching together and all standing around for Santa like a cult and and my history teacher says to the math teacher moderately loudly behind me "Jesus, this parallels Auschwitz a bit, doesn't it?" Since then, I haven't been able to see it the same. Thus, this film (with the freakishly animated people) isn't a holiday classic for me 😅
This film will always hold a special place in my heart. I got to see it when it came out in theaters in IMAX 3D. As a kid, everything looked so real (haha obviously not now) and they used the 3D elements to their advantage. Plus I just love this soundtrack, it hits me in the feels and I get teary eyed.
Honestly is controversial as the animation is I think it is very impressive. The Polar Express is the first feature film made entirely from motion capture. The directing of the film is some of the best I've ever seen in an animated movie and it helps the motion capture look better. Tom Hanks motion captured for 6 characters including the Conductor, Hero Boy, Santa, Hobo, the Father, and Scrooge. Hero Boy is voiced by Juni from Spy Kids and Hero Girl is voiced by Nona Gaye the daughter of Marvin Gaye.
i saw a deleted scene from this movie that explains the whole story behind the hobo ghost and it's... rather dark. basically, the hobo is named king (because king of the north pole and all that jazz), and he frequently would ride trains for free. but one night, on christmas eve, he rode atop the polar express, hesitated too much upon approaching flattop tunnel, and... his top got flattened. now his ghost rides atop the polar express every christmas eve
23:00 honestly, besides from the creepy puppet on the Polar Express, this scene always freaked me out the most as a kid (and even nowadays lol). Just the thought of walking down a street thats somehow smaller than avarage, with every house lit up around you but no other people in sight and no way to get out of there... Idk. This emptiness always gave me the creeps. Kinda looked like the walls and windows were just for show with no real homes behind them. Scary af haha
you said "adventure is out there" and now i want to see yall watch pixar's up 😂 im sure yallve seen it but i think it would be a fun time! i didnt even realize till just now you havent done that one!
Ive always thought is was sad that his sister never woke up to get in the train, but I guess the whole point is that big kids and some kids in general were lossing their spirit so the ride was for them.
I'm so happy you're watching this movie :D Polar Express is kind of a comfort movie for me. Saw it really often when I was little and I always kinda connect it with my dad because he's a huge railroad/train fan xD And I actually don't mind the animation so much, I think it's still really cute.^^ (Btw: LOVE your Christmas sweaters! xD)
Even at the age of 7, I questioned how none of the children died when they were submerged in frozen water at the back of the train. yeah...this movie is stupid but the part with the bell does make me tear up a bit
When I was a kid me and my parents and cousins went on this train that was supposed to be themed after the movie, like a real train ride, I was too young to remember details but we got hot chocolate and we also had glowsticks for some reason. Might be a reach but this movie is kafkaesque to me in a way 😂
When I was in elementary school, I remember, every year in my music class we had a polar express party and we’d watch polar express and get hot chocolate. I miss those times 🥲
sounds like torture in the end to break your spirits which would be the opposite of a Christmas movie or whatever this CG hell is "supposed' to which is to UPLIFT spirits.
See they did the same thing for two years for me but they had us come in our pjs and bring treats and they were some of my best Christmas memories from school so I’m biased hahaha
We did the same thing at my elementary school and there are better Christmas movies so idk why this became the elementary school tradition for so many schools, but honestly them making us watch this movie each year had the opposite effect on me and made me appreciate it more than I probably would have
6:15-6:23 it’s okay I didn’t have my hot chocolate either I was trying to prep it during this scene😂 In elementary school I watched not only How The Grinch Stole Christmas but The Polar Express too and let me tell you Benji’s facial expressions is a WHOLE MOOD! Questionable moments in the movie but hey it’s a fun time I guess😂💀
I used to be a HUGE hater of this film because I found the animation a little uncanny as a kid, but we ended up doing a medley of the songs in choir so I decided to give it another chance. Upon re-watch, Tom Hanks in practically every role is still unsettling but the overall message of the story is touching. I always wondered what the guy in the train was meant to be though, as that doesn’t seem to be resolved. Edit: I love how the music in your recap is Christmas themed!
38:32 Hero Boy (I'll never not be angry he's just named Hero Boy but his sister who barely exists in this has one) almost stopped believing because no one has real proof and the North Pole is void of life so...
I have a question as to why the Polar Express inly comes to some kids and not others. Like I get the whole point of Believing but the kid only did because of the Express train and nothing else....
They don't have the roller coaster aspect, but I know in my last state, they had an event where your family could ride the train and get the hot chocolate dance and go to the North Pole and such. I think Amtrak ran it so it may be in multiple states.
It’s hilarious that Rizzo added the comment about action progressing the plot as much as the dumb song in post! The power of editing. I was cracking up!! 😂
Honestly I think the polar express has that ability to allow me to not think about the plot and just simple embrace the cozy and magical/mystical world. Do I know it’s stupid a bit? Yes. Do I know they made this 20 page children’s book way too long? Also yes. However, it’s honestly one of my favorite Christmas movies for its vibes, beauty and just funness. You two made my sister and I laugh so hard our parents asked if we were alright from the other room 😂 love you two so much! Never change. Hope you two had a good holiday and enjoy the rest of 2024.
I actually love this movie because of how creepy it is. My favorite part is the reveal of "he sees you when you're sleeping, etc" is literal surveillance cameras.
I… kinda wish I saw it as a child in 3D lol, feel this is a film that needs childhood nostalgia or the spectacle of seeing that computer animation for the first time in 2004. Loved your commentary tho! And R.I.P. to gay icon Michael Jeter (the steamer with the long beard) - look up his Tony Award performance for “Grand Hotel” if you haven’t seen it!
I remember watching this when it first came out and getting a bell 🔔 in my stocking. My dad acting like he couldn't hear the bell. Even though this movie as some creepy moments in it. It's one of my favorite because I always think of my dad when I watch it now.
as a kid we watched this movie every year at school. I dont remember the movie much now because as a kid I never knew what was happening. But theres so many fun parts of this movie that I didnt care. Our teachers providing hot chocolate and cookie as us kid were in our christmas pjs after a day of christmas games and crafts and watching this movie at the end of the day is my favorite christmas memories.
I love how every time Rizzo would look too Benji his face was just blank and disassociating for half the movie 😂😂😂 This was one of the only approved Christmas movies in my middle school/high school and every freaking class would show it on the last couple days before winter break when we had nothing to do. Besides it just being an ugly and weird movie I mainly grew to hate it because of that 😂😂😂 haven’t watched it yet and honestly I refuse to ever again!
I love the ugly Christmas vibes! For some reason this is the one movie I don’t get the hype about, I don’t like, and then I rewatch it and I’m like “huh, ok I do kinda like it. Mainly cause of the ending half touches me emotionally but the rest of the movie is…”.
As a kid I was like Benji watching this movie. The only part I found enjoyable was the hot chocolate scene, the animation always creeped me out, and don't get me started on the kid in the yellow pajamas. The message of polar express is good I just don't vibe with this movie. I guess I like Christmas movies where the plot doesn't directly revolve around the Christmas spirit and if it does it's just the message of, "hey be nice to people". I like Christmas movies with lots of singing and dancing because I loved White Christmas, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Holiday Inn, and Santa Claus is coming to town growing up. As an adult I found It Happened on 5th Avenue which is along the lines of A Christmas Carol; teaching a rich man what is important in life.
there was so much hype about this movie because it was the first ever 100% mo cap animated film, and I remember just watching it like "why won't it end?" lmao (also Muppet Christmas Carol is the GOAT)
I still remember being a kid renting this movie and watching it in my parent's room with a warm, giddy feeling. This movie will never not bring back those warm fuzzies. Also, the hobo and conductor are supposed to represent the boy's potential life outlooks. The conductor represents the boy's belief, magic, and unexplainable wonder in the world. The hobo represents the boy's banality, hard truth, and explainable logic.
one little thing that bugged the HELL outa me was that jingle bell ringing while his squishy little fingers are RIGHT ON THE METAL??? it makes a beautiful little ring-ding-ring sound when he shakes it and that shit shoulda sounded like clank-clack-clickety-clink-clang
It’s so odd how good the artwork is and how uncanny the animation still is. Like they had figured out textures and fabrics and multiple layers of rendering light and shadow, and were taking full advantage of CGI’s frame-by-frame nature to compose wonderful shots and sequences; but they hadn’t quite cracked the code on making limbs and digits not bend like hot dogs, or adding enough incidental muscle motion around the eyes to keep them from looking glassy and checked-out.
I love this book- when I was in elementary school this book was read one year to the entire school and all of the kindergartners/ first graders got bells- I still have mine! however I have always had issues with this movie and not just because the early 3d tom hanks and other humans animation freaked me out! the fact that as you get older you reach a point where you can no longer hear the bell means not only that your childhood is over but your inner child has diminished to the point of it almost if not essentially became non-existent is depressing to me and what does that say about those of us who are adults whose inner child never really faded or truly went away compared to those that did? Rizzo sounded like Roz from monsters inc when he was repeating the elf's trust me line
"seems like a cult." they are. the indoctrination starts with hot chocolate. all those elves were human children once upon a time and this is absolutely a horror movie. the animation itself tried to warn us 😬
Watching this at 28 years old I don’t know why kid me thought that this was live action with CGI maybe because I thought It looked so realistic but now…
I saw this movie in the cinema and absolutely loved it and it still holds a special place in my heart. So growing up and finding out some people hate this movie was heartbreaking
I think if I was a little kid when this came out I would have loved it, but I was in high school when it came out so I never got into it. Although the design of some of the characters might have turned me off a bit, definitely not the best use of motion capture. Quantic dream they are not. (The video game company that made Detroit: Become Human, Beyond Two Souls, and Heavy Rain.). Understand how people would get into it though. It’s well made and has a good message Great reaction as always though guys, hope you guys had a great holiday and a happy new year! Also anytime one of you said Christmas magic I would sing Christmas Magic Linda Belcher style.
this movie next hit i think bc i was older when it came out, but my younger cousin loved it!! i think most kids born past 2000 think of this as a classic lol. the animation design freaks me out lol the conductor is also mean lol. and the 3D moments are too much without watching in 3D
Oh I watched this for the first time on Christmas day and HATED it 😂. It was so tedious and I really didnt like the graphics. Apart from that it was great 😂😂
I always liked the animation for this movie (I think it was one of the first 3d movies I saw) and I was surprised people hated the animation when I grew up 🤣🤣
they can never make me hate this movie 🤧 i am aware how weird and creepy it is but it was always a family favorite so i will always treasure the story & songs ♥️🎄
Every year in band the last 2 days before Christmas break we would have Tim Hortons donut holes, apple cider, and watch The Polar Express. I hate apple cider and I hate The Polar Express.
This studio made such creepy movies, and it's wild that from this to I think the last film they made before Disney killed them it got progressively worse kdjfhds. I just remember watching this with a vague sense of unease which isn't a bad thing, necessarily, but thank god I never saw the other two as a child. Mars Needs Moms almost looks like they thought well maybe if we try to go more stylized and less human it'll fit the style better, and they were incorrect dskjfhdsdjk.
As a child, it freaked me out that all of the adult male characters were voiced by Tom Hanks. It was a surreal experience, to say the least.
So funny! Didn’t bother me but I think I was also following the behind the scenes process before it came out
If that freak's you out watch Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby where the same actor plays the father and captain hook.
Hell yeah, animated freaks of nature, all of whom are Tom Hanks. Let's gooooooooo
the real Tom hanks is the Tom hanks we met along the way
The animation is genuinely fine. I honestly never did and still don’t understand why people think it’s bad. The textures are shit, but the facial expressions are completely fine.
@@Cactusfruitsquisher its not necessarily bad, its scary as hell. creatures from the deepest depths of the uncanny valley
I will never get over how they drift a literal train
That’s my favorite stupid part lolol
Seems as though both Buzz and Woody grew up to be Santa Claus 😂 🧑🎄
😂😂 omg true!!
Imagine what the kids in the train cars went through during the whirly-derly, heart-stopping, concussion-causing, bone-breaking rollercoaster ride without warning it was going to happen.
THATS WHAT WE WERE THINKING!!!
I don’t know if anyone came up with this theory already, but I always thought the conductor was the adult version of the kid. It makes sense why the conductor is aware of the kid’s choices on the journey🤔
Oooo I never thought of it that way 🤔
Yeah I think the conductor is the future when Hero Boy believes in Santa and the Hobo is the future when the Hero Boy doesn't believe in Santa.

Fun fact: Nasty girl Tinashe did the mocap for the girl
Wait WHAT!?
Hahahahaha truth!
This movie was wild and beautiful. Tom Hanks actually played 7 players. Happy Holidays Pink Popcast
🎄🎄🎄🎉🎉🎉🥹🥹🥹
SEVEN!?!? Who all??? Conductor, Dad, Santa?…
@@PinkPopcast Yeah and Hero boy, Hobo, the Scrooge puppet and the narrator
"seems like a cult." they are. the indoctrination starts with hot chocolate. all those elves were human children once upon a time and this is absolutely a horror movie. the animation itself tried to warn us 😬
OMG 😂
Billy the poor kid the only child in the whole movie besides the main character’s sister that has a name
My favorite line of this movie reaction is Benji: "Am I still dissociated looking"
I was Benji when I first saw this. So disappointed because i really liked the book.
The book is great!!!
I never had the energy or the interest to watch this movie because im not big on Christmas, but I'd do anything for you. ❤
🥺🥹
Y'all made this 10x better i laughed so hard so thanks
I think if I was a little kid when this came out I would have loved it, but I was in high school when it came out so I never got into it. Although the design of some of the characters might have turned me off a bit, definitely not the best use of motion capture. Quantic dream they are not. (The video game company that made Detroit: Become Human, Beyond Two Souls, and Heavy Rain.). Understand how people would get into it though. It’s well made and has a good message
Great reaction as always though guys, hope you guys had a great holiday and a happy new year!
Also anytime one of you said Christmas magic I would sing Christmas Magic Linda Belcher style.
Love the Belchers!!!
@@PinkPopcast you guys should totally react to some of their Christmas or Halloween episodes.
this movie next hit i think bc i was older when it came out, but my younger cousin loved it!! i think most kids born past 2000 think of this as a classic lol. the animation design freaks me out lol the conductor is also mean lol. and the 3D moments are too much without watching in 3D
Exactly! But I would love to see it in 3D!
Oh I watched this for the first time on Christmas day and HATED it 😂. It was so tedious and I really didnt like the graphics. Apart from that it was great 😂😂
Hahahahaha “apart from that”
@@PinkPopcast I like to be positive at Christmas 😂😂
ah, yes, the Santa truther movie
Hahaha not Santa Truther 😅
☕ Yes let's talk about the bum on the train giving the kids moonshine boot sock coffee
Hahahahaha must be ASS nasty!
The animation terrified me as a kid, every time I saw this movie on TV I immediately switched to another channel 😂😂
BWAHAHAHAHA omg 😂
This studio made such creepy movies, and it's wild that from this to I think the last film they made before Disney killed them it got progressively worse kdjfhds. I just remember watching this with a vague sense of unease which isn't a bad thing, necessarily, but thank god I never saw the other two as a child. Mars Needs Moms almost looks like they thought well maybe if we try to go more stylized and less human it'll fit the style better, and they were incorrect dskjfhdsdjk.
I liked A Christmas Carol though!
Ngl…I would drink chocolate milk as well for Christmas for the same reason. So you’re okay Benji.
Thank you!!!
As weird as this movie is, that last bit of monologue gets me every time
Everyone is Tom Hanks
I remember seeing this for the first time at a Girl Scouts Christmas party, and boyyy I felt unnerved by the animation.
Least favorite Christmas movie. It’s somehow both boring and terrifying.
Benji's face is priceless 😂😂😂 and it's telling me he didn't like movies that Rizzo watched without him😂
The correct title is THE POLAR EXPRESS IS SCARY 😭
