There's a theory that she let Coraline move in to protect Whybe. She knew her sister disappeared around that age and kind of used Coraline as a sacrifice to keep the other mother from going after her grandson.
Technically Whybe is a character made up for the film. He was never in the book since Gaiman wrote it as a single protagonist dealing with isolation and neglect.
I had to look up what was going down because I’m so out of loop with most news because I can’t handle it and my mental health but when all the astrology people said this was the year of karma they were not lying. Anyone with any form of authority who plays into a mysononistic world needs to be checked! That’s why Benji and I put a lot of effort into making sure we don’t intentionally or accidentally hurt anyone with these videos - we don’t want to be yet ANOTHER source of pain in this world 😞
Idk if y'all have ever seen Spirited Away, but I am kind of obsessed with how it's like the less unsettling Japanese folklore version of Coraline (or rather, Coraline is the English-American version of Spirited Away). I watched Spirited Away when I was very young and it gave me mild nightmares. I tried watching Coraline when I was a bit older, and was so scared I couldn't finish it. Only when I tried watching Coraline again as a tween was I able to watch until the end and even years later to this day years I still find it very unsettling - not just the creepiness but the bleakness of it, the sense of loneliness and detachment from her parents. Both Coraline and Spirited Away really feel like the manifestation of a child's nightmare - being traumatically separated from the safety of one's parents and in the dreaded darkness of night, thrust into an alternate reality filled with unwelcoming strangers where you have to fend for yourself and save your parents from an evil mother witch who wants to hold you hostage. Both films even deal with the child protagonist risking losing her own life/sense of self.
i don’t know if either of you have watched this show, dead boy detectives, it was recently cancelled by netflix even though its sister series the sandman is getting a second season. it has queer characters and follows a story of discovering oneself. it is honestly such a beautiful show that means a lot to so many people. i understand sometimes trying to save a cancelled show is fruitless at times, but it would mean a lot to a lot of people if you would consider watching it if you haven’t. not necessarily on this channel, just on your own time to up the views if you can 😭💗 i feel you would enjoy it! anyway, loved this video AND the ad!! complete artistry as always /gen
Kind of ties in with the author and the allegations though… I LOVED Dead Boy Detectives when it first came out but since people have come forward about the original author I can’t look at it the same again 💔 I’m sure the only reason The Sandman and Good Omens are going forward is they were renewed way before the news broke, meaning production/writing was well underway.

I hate that this the way I found out about the author of this book being accused of misconduct. I read the book in grade school and liked it and my friends and I enjoy watching this film. And I also like this author's other work. welp.
there’s a theory i like that wybie’s grandma allowed coraline’s family to move in bc of their financial situation and bc she thought coraline would be safe with the door sealed over. when coraline’s mom looks for the key to the door, you can see that it isn’t in the drawer for the first frames. it materializes as coraline’s mom rummages around for it, meaning wybie’s grandma didn’t leave it in the house for them to find. when she finds out wybie gave coraline the doll (which we see in the note, he found in a trunk) she’s upset and wants wybie to retrieve it bc she’s knows it’s dangerous. wybie’s grandma just wanted to help! **also! the tunnel is more of an entity/being in the book and the part where coraline is escaping for the last time through the tunnel was THE scariest part of the book for me
I hope this isn’t weird- but I love you guys so much. Even your ads bring me joy lol 😅 I’m always smiling or laughing along to your reactions/commentary. I also love the style/animation of this film. Corpse Bride next? Maybe? Someday? You guys are awesome, byeee!
Just a gorgeous movie. Nothing like stop motion. Selleck and Laika killed it so hard with this one. Love your guys' reactions so much! Keep up the good and responsible work 💪
My niece was little right at the intersections of Coraline and Lalaloopsy dolls and to this day she won't let my mom forget putting Coraline on for her when she was little and spawning a lifelong phobia of button eyes 😂
No one ever talks about the letter looping on the cake, that says “welcome home Coraline” the other mother loops the o on welcome but not on home, saying that she’s welcome but she’s not home. That part gave me chills 😂
I went to watch this when I was a complete scaredy-cat 8 year old at the cinema and by the time I got to the ghost scene I shot out of that screening like you wouldn't believe. It remains the only cinema screening I have ever left before the end credits rolled. A few years later, this movie became something I could comfortably fall asleep to 😂😅
Watched it as a kid and remember it being scary, but not enough to traumatize me. It’s definitely so fruitful to rewatch it I also like the idea that they tackled appreciating what you have for kids specifically, cause the other mother gave everything Coraline wanted knowing Coraline was dissatisfied with her family and would be easy to win over. She essentially got spoiled heavily, 24/7 parental attention, all the food she could want, a garden centered around her, her neighbors entertaining her the way she’d like them to, Wybie (poor dude) to talk less, etc. It’s a very selfish but childlike set of desires that she had, the super unrealistic kind that you shouldn’t actual have. I mean sure, her parents could’ve humored her a bit more or at least spoken to her better, but it’s understandable that they acted that way given how stressed they were financially. Coraline, being too young to understand, struggled to understand why her parents just couldn’t give her the things she wanted anyway. Kids don’t really comprehend money difficulties, especially if you’re not necessarily in poverty and have enough to get by. Also, if you guys haven’t already seen it, isle of dogs is a really good movie and I believe it uses the same animation style!
I'm glad that there was acknowledgment about what's been happening with Gaiman at the beginning of the video, especially since the news broke out a few months ago and there hasn't been much reporting about it since. I still loved the reaction, but it was nice to know there was solidarity with you about what has come to light.

@@PinkPopcast my mom hates scary movies of all kind so I have been catching up on Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas and I still have to see the Corpse Bride
Gaiman was very involved with the making of this movie. He explained in a behind the scenes interview that he wasn't sure about Wybie at first, but he warmed up to the idea after seeing a few finished scenes and eventually liked Wybie as a character.
@PinkPopcast I'm not too wild about Wybie, to be honest. I think it could have been better to have her on her own, like she is in the book to sell her feeling of isolation a bit more.
Coraline is a great movie. The Beldam is a dark and scary villain. It reminds me of Lalaloopsy dolls. I used to be scared of it when I was young, but after watching it years, it's actually pretty funny 😈😈😈😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣

It's got witches and monsters, but most importantly, heart! 💙❤️ And it's less than 8 hours in total with the first season. 👻👻🔍🔍💀💀
I know Rizzo hates musicals BUT would you guys consider reacting to Galavant? Even just the pilot. It's like a crack-fic that takes itself seriously, throws all the fantasy tropes on its head and is hilariously self aware. Also there are some surprising cameos in there. Everyone thought it would be cancelled after the first season ended on a cliffhanger and then it got a miraculous 2nd season to wrap things up.
My favorite memory of loving this movie when I describe it to my grandma who hates horror or anything scary on my flip phone telling her all the details and loving it she was frightened in how this was movie for kids 😂😂😂
theory is the grandma let Coralines family in (even though they had a daughter) because Wybie was the same age as his grandma's sister when she went missing. So she picked a family with a child as a sacrifice to ensure Wybie was safe
I find that kinda weird though personally, because Wybie tells Coraline that his grandma got upset at him when he got the doll from the trunk and went to give it to Coraline... If she wanted to sacrifice Coraline, why would she not want her to have the doll, which is the eyes of the belldam?
in the 5th grade my middle school gathered us all into the auditorium for a movie as a treat for the holiday and omg, the hooting and hollering when forcible and spink came on screen as mermaids will stick with me forever lmaoo, like clearly none of the teachers had watched this movie before giving it to like 300 10 year olds at once 😆

As a kid, I did not understand why this film HAUNTED me so much. It was creepy, unsettling, etc. but for some reason, it made me burst into uncontrollable sobs. I couldn't even think about it without feeling ill. Years later, my therapist recommended I watch it. Completely unpromted- she didn't even know I'd seen it before. We were at the begining of finally discussing just how narcicistic, abusive, and damaging my mother had been me entire childhood. I took her advice, and it finally clicked. "How could you run away from me?" "Let me love you" "She wants something to love. Or to eat". "Don't leave me, I'll die without you!!" As crazy as it sounds, this film helped me to understand and process all of those wounds, fears, and realise exactly why I was so upset by it all those years ago. Someone insisting they love you whilst being a monster underneath. All of the "right" things being there on the surface but KNOWING in your gut something is just wrong. It's also just so well made and crafted with so much love. I'm so glad you guys did this one, as always, I was absolutely delighted! Thank you
I love Coraline!! What a treat!! It's one of my top 10 go-to films during Halloween. When I worked in a video store, parents did NOT like it if it was playing on the TV. You could play the Addams Family, Beetlejuice, even a classic horror film but this movie was hated by those parents 😂
Last comment 😅 I was feeling sand and kind of down when i learned about Maggie Smith's passing so i needed the laugh more today. Thanks and love you. Keep watching so i can too❤
There’s a theory that Wybies grandma let Coraline and her parents move into the pink palace to protect Wybie, so he wouldn’t be the one getting taken. Another theory is that the well is also a portal to the other world, In the beginning when she’s making the making of the doll, you see a sky full of stars, just like wybie said about the well. And the reason the other mother wants the key to the little door is because no child in their right mind would jump into a well, so it’s easier to lure kids thru the little door There are so many theories and details it would take HOURS to talk about them
I always thought it was so random that she was from Pontiac Michigan. The random "I just moved from" place us usually Cleveland or something lol. I've never been to Oregon, but there are plenty of creepy old houses and slavic immigrants in Pontiac, probably less creepy fog though.

Terrible what’s going on with the author and I feel awful for the victims, I hope they get their justice.
Exactly! Justice for those wronged!
I'm out of the loop, what happened?
I really appreciate the disclaimer you guys gave at the beginning because it’s important to acknowledge the nuance of a horrible creator and then their work being completely reimagined and celebrating their work. It’s a tricky rope to walk since there’s so many horrible creatives in entertainment, but I’m glad you both recognize that reality, it’s refreshing ❤
Also HELP BABY RIZZO AS WYBIE??? imagine where we’d all be
Yeah I actually have no clue as to what they're referring to but, glad they did it regardless.
Any context is appreciated but I will probably go look it up anyway
There are definitely some films or series we don’t cover out of respect and solidarity. This is a film we probably wouldn’t have had an issue with in the future but because I forgot, I didn’t want it to feel in immediate poor taste for anyone still trigged and processing trauma because of the current accusations!
@@vozera723just to help inform: the author has been accused of (and is likely guilty of) sexual assault and forcing his victims into keeping quiet with NDAs and so forth. It’s despicable, but I’d rather you have awareness.
@@enbytoon you mean the the author of the book? Neil Gaiman?
@@enbytoonI hate thattttttt, isn't he the author of like so many different series? Why can't we have good things. Anyway thanks for the information much appreciated
you guys should do a few of laika’s other films!! kubo and the 2 strings is incredible and paranorman is great too!
I would love to eventually cover those!
Paranorman is amazing. They might need some tissues for that one cause that movie gets freaking dark.
Absolutely Paranorman!
Kubo is sooooo underrated!
im so happy to hear someone else has watch kubo & the 2 strings!! its my all time favorite & i mightve let out a cry for half the movie lol
A recommendation for spooky season: the craft from 1996!
Even of you’ve seen it before, because you always make reactions fun anyways!
Great movie!
This is how I found out about Neil Gaiman....it really is just everyone we can't trust isn't it....
Sadly, yeah, it really is feeling like that 😟
Anyone with any form of authority who plays into a mysononistic world needs to be checked! That’s why Benji and I put a lot of effort into making sure we don’t intentionally or accidentally hurt anyone with these videos - we don’t want to be yet ANOTHER source of pain in this world 😞
@@PinkPopcastWell said, I love you guys.
@@PinkPopcast You are probably the best reaction channel that I've ever seen. Always thoughtful and kind. Thank you for all the effort you put in ❤
Idk if y'all have ever seen Spirited Away, but I am kind of obsessed with how it's like the less unsettling Japanese folklore version of Coraline (or rather, Coraline is the English-American version of Spirited Away).
Oh my gosh that’s so depressing 😭 we will definitely check it out
Kind of ties in with the author and the allegations though… I LOVED Dead Boy Detectives when it first came out but since people have come forward about the original author I can’t look at it the same again 💔
I’m sure the only reason The Sandman and Good Omens are going forward is they were renewed way before the news broke, meaning production/writing was well underway.
Omg I also commented about Dead Boy Detectives and saw this after I posted haha! Great minds!!! Ya'll definitely should check out Dead Boy Detectives! 💜

I hate that this the way I found out about the author of this book being accused of misconduct. I read the book in grade school and liked it and my friends and I enjoy watching this film. And I also like this author's other work. welp.
I know 😭😭😭
What is going on, can you explain?
there’s a theory i like that wybie’s grandma allowed coraline’s family to move in bc of their financial situation and bc she thought coraline would be safe with the door sealed over. when coraline’s mom looks for the key to the door, you can see that it isn’t in the drawer for the first frames. it materializes as coraline’s mom rummages around for it, meaning wybie’s grandma didn’t leave it in the house for them to find. when she finds out wybie gave coraline the doll (which we see in the note, he found in a trunk) she’s upset and wants wybie to retrieve it bc she’s knows it’s dangerous. wybie’s grandma just wanted to help!
**also! the tunnel is more of an entity/being in the book and the part where coraline is escaping for the last time through the tunnel was THE scariest part of the book for me
Great sponsor commercial. You guys are so creative!
I hope this isn’t weird- but I love you guys so much. Even your ads bring me joy lol 😅 I’m always smiling or laughing along to your reactions/commentary.
I also love the style/animation of this film. Corpse Bride next? Maybe? Someday?

Just a gorgeous movie. Nothing like stop motion. Selleck and Laika killed it so hard with this one.
Love your guys' reactions so much! Keep up the good and responsible work 💪
Thank you ❤️
My niece was little right at the intersections of Coraline and Lalaloopsy dolls and to this day she won't let my mom forget putting Coraline on for her when she was little and spawning a lifelong phobia of button eyes 😂
Omg nooooo 😂
No one ever talks about the letter looping on the cake, that says “welcome home Coraline” the other mother loops the o on welcome but not on home, saying that she’s welcome but she’s not home. That part gave me chills 😂
I went to watch this when I was a complete scaredy-cat 8 year old at the cinema and by the time I got to the ghost scene I shot out of that screening like you wouldn't believe. It remains the only cinema screening I have ever left before the end credits rolled. A few years later, this movie became something I could comfortably fall asleep to 😂😅
😂😂 omg great that’s a great story you now get to tell
Hahaha being a kid is so funny
@@PinkPopcastYh it's a strange and lovely time of life. Great reaction as well!
Watched it as a kid and remember it being scary, but not enough to traumatize me. It’s definitely so fruitful to rewatch it
I also like the idea that they tackled appreciating what you have for kids specifically, cause the other mother gave everything Coraline wanted knowing Coraline was dissatisfied with her family and would be easy to win over.
Wow that’s honestly a fascinating analysis
absolutely love coraline and i applaud laika for their hard work and the love they pour into this film
Yes!!🙌
I'm glad that there was acknowledgment about what's been happening with Gaiman at the beginning of the video, especially since the news broke out a few months ago and there hasn't been much reporting about it since. I still loved the reaction, but it was nice to know there was solidarity with you about what has come to light.
My cousin was a data wrangler for Laika starting with Coraline up until Kubo and the Two Strings. I actually got to visit the set of Kubo and the Two Strings. It was incredible! I love all their films, but my favorite is Paranorman. Highly recommend that one as well.
I'm also a fan of dark whimsy kids stories Rizzo. It's one of my favorite genres. Another great reaction video! 💜

Gaiman was very involved with the making of this movie. He explained in a behind the scenes interview that he wasn't sure about Wybie at first, but he warmed up to the idea after seeing a few finished scenes and eventually liked Wybie as a character.
🤮
@PinkPopcast I'm not too wild about Wybie, to be honest. I think it could have been better to have her on her own, like she is in the book to sell her feeling of isolation a bit more.
Coraline is a great movie. The Beldam is a dark and scary villain. It reminds me of Lalaloopsy dolls. I used to be scared of it when I was young, but after watching it years, it's actually pretty funny

Would you guys ever react to A Quiet Place? Like all the movies around that or is that not as interesting?
We’d consider those films! I loved the first and third
@@PinkPopcast Same!
I’d love to see a reaction to those. I love the first one and the second was pretty good as well. Still need to watch A Quiet Place Day 1
I know Rizzo hates musicals BUT would you guys consider reacting to Galavant? Even just the pilot. It's like a crack-fic that takes itself seriously, throws all the fantasy tropes on its head and is hilariously self aware. Also there are some surprising cameos in there. Everyone thought it would be cancelled after the first season ended on a cliffhanger and then it got a miraculous 2nd season to wrap things up.
My favorite memory of loving this movie when I describe it to my grandma who hates horror or anything scary on my flip phone telling her all the details and loving it she was frightened in how this was movie for kids 😂😂😂
Brave kids!!! And great memory!
I WASN’T EXPECTING THIS WHAT!!!
I can’t wait to get off work and watch this later tonight!! 😭🙏🏽
Yay! Let us know what you think!
theory is the grandma let Coralines family in (even though they had a daughter) because Wybie was the same age as his grandma's sister when she went missing.
The triangular rock that she looked through, wasn’t a rock or stone at all, it was actually just made of candy, which is why it melted in the fire

@@PinkPopcasti was really expecting a cut out of Benji showing up from the rocks saying it. It was wonderful and funny in my head 😂
omg I JUST watched Coraline, you guys are actually reading my mind
As a kid, I did not understand why this film HAUNTED me so much. It was creepy, unsettling, etc. but for some reason, it made me burst into uncontrollable sobs. I couldn't even think about it without feeling ill.
Years later, my therapist recommended I watch it. Completely unpromted- she didn't even know I'd seen it before. We were at the begining of finally discussing just how narcicistic, abusive, and damaging my mother had been me entire childhood. I took her advice, and it finally clicked.
"How could you run away from me?" "Let me love you" "She wants something to love. Or to eat". "Don't leave me, I'll die without you!!"
As crazy as it sounds, this film helped me to understand and process all of those wounds, fears, and realise exactly why I was so upset by it all those years ago.
Seriously!?!? God it’s been awhile since I was a child but I don’t think this movie warrants that kind of reaction lol
@PinkPopcast right?! It surprised me and I've read its happened in other movie stores too!

Us too!! 😩😩
And the reason the other mother wants the key to the little door is because no child in their right mind would jump into a well, so it’s easier to lure kids thru the little door
There are so many theories and details it would take HOURS to talk about them
14:50 not 'it's open early today' like it's a restaurant😭
