Maya showed Kingpin the Echos of his past. I think she was trying to break him out of his own mental hell. He's still reliving the memory his father hurting his mother even day. She also showed him the memory of the ice cream vendor. He remembers every kill knowing it was wrong but what's the mindset he's in he still loses himself to his rage. She tried and failed. Instead of trying to erase what's been trapping him behind his own self-made prison bars, instead of trying to leave the worst of his own instincts, he's to afraid. He'd rather stay a rabbit in a snowstorm. I really liked what they tried to do even though it was executed kind of sloppily. Still I do stand by the fact that I think they treated the Legacy characters perfectly and overall I really did like this show. It is still very messy and has a lot of flaws but it had really cool action and character moments. 7.5/10 for the whole show in my opinion!

Fisk knows that Matt is Daredevil if the Netflix series is canon. Then why not reveal it to the entire world if not directly, but indirectly or putting a bounty of Matt's head like he did with Maya. I know that in the comics also Kingpin knows that Matt is DD but didn't reveal it to everyone for some reason (I forgot). Maybe that's the case here?
Or some parts of the Netflix show is not canon like Fisk knowing Matt's secret?

I honestly feel like this last episode ended more in a hurry to even get time to settle with emotions properly. I would've liked more kingpin and to show his emotional side, giving it some time to struggle with it, making it more detailed and with time. I definitely would have loved 6 episodes in this. Otherwise, This is such an amazing show, it's more grounded and earthy than the rest of the MCU. Weirdly, it feels breathable at its own pace rather than trying to compete and get along with the whole narrative of MCU and I loved it.

    • @Linator4
      @Linator4 Місяць тому

Coy said the same & while I love him, I think you both are reaching hard with that theory. That’s legitimately what Thunderbolt Ross’ role is gonna be (the team is literally named after him).
He’s gonna become President + Red Hulk, so I don’t see a need for 2 villainous political figures to be linked to banning heroes & teaming with the Contessa to launch the Dark Avenger Initiative. I think Mayor Kingpin will more than likely play a role in DD: Born Again.
If anything, I’d build him as the big bad of the street-level Defenders aka Heroes for Hire. I’d plant seeds throughout all the projects, especially the Spider-Man college trilogy with his villains & some of his allies.
Silver Sable could be his private security who eventually turns & helps Peter. You can maybe even have Fisk form an exclusive alliance with other major crime bosses & lead them as his Sinister Six, but his end goal would be a gang war in NYC. The main Heroes for Hire team would consist of:
      - Spider-Man
      - Daredevil
      - The Punisher
      - Jessica Jones
      - Luke Cage
      - Iron Fist

Kingpin leaving immediately after what Maya used her powers makes sense as he has never faced anyone with abilities, I wished for just a little bit of a fight between Maya and Fisk but we don’t need to rush that yet, the reception this show has gotten, we’re definitely getting a season 2 and we can get that in there, having Fisk retreat because he didn’t want to face his own internal conflict is a smart move, loved this show, I would’ve loved for an extra episode but I think making a show with less episodes to focus on the main story is what this show needed to be and it succeeded 9/10 for just due to how each scene had me invested

Man, it breaks my heart that Marvel didn't have the faith that this series deserved because there were seriously some POWERFUL aspects and messages here. It's so obvious something truly great was filmed and was just chopped to bits. The rumors about Marvel deeming this "unreleasable" at 6 episodes confuses the hell out of me now because I loved so much of this and feel like some extra breathing room (another episode) would have really turned it into something special.
I loved the sound design, the cinematography, the score (especially Fisk's theme), the costume design, the performances, the callbacks to Daredevil with Fisk's history, the overall gritty tone, the beautiful imagery, and the inspiring story of the Choctaw, so, so much. But, I cannot believe how badly this was butchered in the editing room. It's so obvious scenes are just missing and I honestly have no idea why they aren't there. I truly think that if Marvel had faith in this show and had given it the full 6 episode treatment, it would have been one of my favorite things they have put out in years. I enjoyed watching this show so much, but the sky high potential here really just irks me to no end.
Post credit scene does set up Born Again nicely I guess.

As far as the last episode goes I could see one thing being criticized as like corny which is when the power is shared with Bonnie and Chula but honestly it worked for me they are in the same maternal blood line in danger and the ancestors are filling the room it’d be weird if they played favorites with Maya based on the rules they’ve established but she just has more skills thus elevating maya to Echo hero status. I’ll also say that final set piece had me STRESSED like if one Native person died at that powwow I was ready to riot that had me on the edge of my seat questioning Maya’s choices rooting hard for Henry and Biscuits on the side. But I wasnt a fan of the ending and I felt it was like they tried to stage a boss fight where...they both walked away.......? Which was an odd choice.

Mostly enjoyed this series. You can really tell some actors put their all into learning signing. As a deaf lead actress, I'm not sure about her acting choice to sign only using her hands since body movement and facial expressions are such a large part of the language. The show should have had more episodes with longer episodes to really let the characters breathe, especially Maya's story. I wasn't a fan of completely changing Maya's powers and killing off her father so late in her life. Kingpin being basically a surrogate father is so powerfy for her journey into becoming who she is. Also removing her ability to read lips. I don't think she healed Kingpin's trauma in the end since Kingpin doesn't have the connection to his family and past. She probably offered the chance but he didn't take it as her mother spoke to her as if it was a choice Maya needed to take herself.
Also, I loved that the white wall he was staring at cracking in his memory calls back to the painting he would look at when he met Vanessa in Daredevil.

Question: Do you know if "Marvel's Spotlight" is just more mature limited shows? I took it as a separate branch where they will do put a spotlight mixing origins and solo character development in a limited arc. Literally putting a spotlight on the character. So say once Mutants come out, they can do a Marvel Spotlight on some villains or heroes or just people in between. Maybe even the humans who have to deal with superheroes for work. Like imagine a Night Nurse Spotlight, or a Mystique Spotlight or even a Shi'ar Empire spotlight. Stores that can provide background so the movies aren't so padded with exposition for different characters now that the universe is expanding with more teams and possibly team villains. I forgot... As a Navajo, I liked the Choctaw cultural representation, but overall, I was disappointed in the story and character of Echo. The show really failed to make me care for her, at all. It felt like they didn't know what to do with the character. Apparently, she wanted to become the new Queen, but why? What was her motivation? We're constantly told she has rage, but that is never really shown enough throughout the show. I think we needed more parallels between her and Fisk and showing how she was heading down the same road as him. I wasn't a fan of her getting powers and instantly knowing how to use them. She didn't really struggle in a way that made me feel like she "earned" them. And there was more exposition than anything that prevented me from really feeling those emotional moments in the show the way that I should have. I'm torn. I really wanted this to prove itself as being in the MCU, but it just feels forgettable.

I'm in the mindset that people can like what they like, all things being subjective but for me (I repeat...for me) everything you wrote is what I think has been wrong in the writing department at Disney in general for many years now. They have been regurgitating the same story over and over again, just swapping the characters and that's pretty much it. The depth, the inner struggles and the real challenges are spread thin now and it's always the same: The main protagonist is good at everything from the get-go without any plausible explanations, can beat up everyone without any real struggles, will never question themselves, often comes across as super arrogant and obnoxious, audiences are always told how the characters is by other characters without never showing it and the list goes on. Nothing is earned. We're supposed to like the characters because the show/or movie tells us to. Regardless if it's Star Wars, Pixar or the MCU, you'll find this recipe in everything now. It's not endearing nor interesting. It's unrelatable and bland. It's just lazy writing. The big drop in viewership on D+ and last year box office confirmed that a vast majority of fans bailed (me included). It's not a coincidence that they put on the brakes on pretty much every projects. I could be totally wrong, but I think they will course correct tin the next 3-4 years and they will come back with quality products that people want.

And perhaps some of the Heads could include Justin Hammer, who will be returning in Armor Wars and The Hood, who will be debuting in the Ironheart series. I have to say I was skeptical when they announced that they were going to do a Marvel Cinematic Version of Echo because of the direction that they took Echo in the comics. She inherited the Phoenix Force which is usually an X-men Power. Here her powers were far more connected to her heritage. Her code name also made more sense here as she contains an echo of her lineage rather then being a female version of Taskmaster as she was in the comics before she became a Phoenix.

It wasn't about revenge in the end like it was wither her father. Her father killed the ones responsible for his wife's death, but she, with the help of her ancestors and her family, grew past the need for revenge and helped her enemy to heal. Coy is right. Lot's to set up for the future. I really like this show and give it 8.5/10. I loved the part where the ancestors fought with her. People complain Marvel has a formulaic ending, and this did something different which is refreshing.

greg's brother completely hated the show. 😄 a shame that marvel/disney completely short-changed maya/echo/the choctaw.

I wonder if the shortening it down was more about cutting extraneous storylines and details, and less about creating a consistent tone. I say this because the acting and cinematography felt like there really was one person at the helm, instead of tons of individuals trying to put their own mark on the property. Which is very difficult to do when multiple people are involved (as per earlier comments about the Snyder cut). I do feel that the story had a fast tempo, but not as rushed or as hectic as other Marvel series (looking at you, She-Hulk…) and the ending had the right stakes, just a bit too easily resolved. But, that is strictly a nitpick on an outstanding series.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Love seeing you three talk about this stuff, in particular. Koy is a fucking encyclopedia of comic books, Greg is fantastic cinematic understanding, and John has such a great read on emotional context of scenes.

I did like the show, but it did feel like scenes were cut short or cut completely, there were weird time skips, or character moments that relied on bits that we didn't see. I wonder if it was supposed to be more episodes but was cut down to five so that it was more bingeable in one sitting.

That's exactly what happened. No idea why they cut it tho cus all the scenes we did get were pretty great

You dont beat fire with fire. You beat it with Water. In that way she hit Kingping harder in this episode than Spiderman or Daredevil ever could. She went into the darkest and deepest corner of his soul and disarmed him in his most vulnerable moment, and nobody has ever gotten that close to him in HIS LIFE, it scared the living christ out of him, sent him running. That was an amazing conclusion, because there was no other way they couldve beat him that wouldve made more sense.

I loved this series, and most of this episode. Except that the episodes were way too short, and this episode went full "All the Jedi live in you now", combined with Echo possibly "healing" Kingpin's pain(?). I hated those things. Otherwise good show.

She didn’t heal his pain at all. She only made him face it.

I kind of liked that instead of just trying to beat Wilson senseless, she "beat" him with compassion. It fits into her story arc. Her putting the hammer down in episode four was her embracing positive power. She freed herself by releasing the need for vengeance.

my take for a storyline would be kingpin only showing up in flashbacks & eventually at the end revealing that his still alive by running for mayor. what they there were doing with mayas origin i would keep all that & punch it up a bit more. her returning home due to her being severly injured while recovery shes starts having visions & learning about her ancestral duties like the lighthorsemen, i like how they showed flashbacks of her lineage tapping into the ancestral powers practically similar to iron fist make it mystical. street level she starts dismantling the crime underbelly she helped create leads into daredevil. when fisk mentioned meeting with the other heads, would be nuts if they introduced other crime boss super villains with powers like Mister Negative, Tombstone, Silvermane, Hammerhead one can only dream.

It doesn't really count as working together, I don't think, but back in the day it was widely believed that Tarantino rewrote or doctored the Crimson Tide script. (The line they point out in particular as being Q's is "Everybody who reads comic books knows that the Kirby Silver Surfer is the only true Silver Surfer.")

The cut down makes no sense in this series, they really built a world to explore, already have the super hero aspect. Have history play. It’s just too much to think you can do a five episode run. I don’t think it takes a genius to realize this should have been 8-10.
