- This is a detailed video of my procedure for performing a complete overhaul and rebuild of the power steering pump on a 2002 Honda Odyssey. At 178,000 miles, it developed a leak and I decided to attempt an overhaul on the pump rather than buying a replacement. I purchased a repair kit online from Rock Auto for around $20 including shipping. Since a quality rebuilt/remanufactured pump can cost upwards of $200, I thought it was worth a try.
The repair kit which included all of the o-rings and seals was a Gates brand, part #348527.
With the right basic tools and some patience, it is not a very difficult job.
UPDATE: The leak was not with the pump after all. This project was a worthwhile attempt at fixing the problem and I enjoyed learning about the process of overhauling the pump. However, the leak was actually in the high pressure hose. Here's my follow-up video on what turned out to be the ultimate fix.

Thank you for this video. By far: one of the best how to videos I have watched on vehicles (believe me, I watch a lot). Great camera angles, Great commentary, No video shake or sudden movements. Your explanations and play by play how-to was excellent. I rebuilt my power steering pump in the amount of time it took me to watch the video with only a couple pauses. I would have never thought to rebuild the pump if I hadn't seen your video. Glad I did cause my o-rings were just like yours; flattened and brittle (125K on vehicle). Please post anything else you do to the '02 Odyssey cause there aren't many videos on this year of vehicle.

Awesome, detailed video. I am going to give this a shot myself tomorrow. My power steering pump keeps blowing the top off the reservoir and spitting out fluid. I've flushed the system a couple times and replaced the reservoir. I have a feeling the culprit might be that O ring that you said usually goes bad. Thanks for the video. I never would have thought I could do this myself before watching this.

Thanks for posting! My problem was simpler. Our 2003 Odyssey developed a noisy power steering pump and I was advised to "just swap out the o-rings" which seemed pretty simple until we tried it. All the other videos on UA-cam show how to change the o-rings on Accords, but I couldn't find ones for the Odyssey. The top O-Ring is easy to do, but the bottom one requires you to remove the bolt under the inlet and I wasn't sure of the sequence of steps to get to that bolt. I figured I needed to remove the pulley, but until I discovered your video I didn't really have a clear idea. Your clear and concise video really helped me to understand the process, but I could get away with not removing the entire pump from the vehicle, so it was simpler. One thing that I did wrong on reassembly was not noticing the two different surfaces on the two sides of the pulley itself, so before I completed the job, I watched your video again, and realized the welded side went out and the smooth side goes toward the pump, so... I pulled the pulley, reversed it, and all is well. Getting to the inlet bolt to tighten isn't easy, you need a short stubby wrench, a socket won't fit there. I should note the two o-rings combined are under 2 bucks from Honda, and our local dealer quoted around $100 for the labor. Love to see a video showing just how to change out the o-rings on the Odyssey, but since you did a total rebuild, won't expect one! My o'rings were flat and brittle as well. Thanks again, your video made this repair possible before a big snow storm hit!

Great to learn from your work that I will pay close attention when rebuilding my 1999 Honda Accord power steering pump. It's leaking and making noise. It has 203,000 miles on it, so time to rebuild it.

I used this info for my '99 Prelude power steering. Thanks a lot! I did the hoses while I was at it, and flushed the fluid. I don't remember the power steering feeling so good, and so QUIET!
Outstanding video...like a magic trick, it's easy when you know /see how it's done. I rebuilt my 99 ody pump based on this video. Sure it's easier to replace the entire pump but where's the fun in that. Your attention to detail was surpassed only by the simplicity with which you performed the work! My only difficulty was returning the shaft/bearing into the housing. The 30 mm socket worked to a point but was to large to clear the housing. I used a 29mm socket to seat the bearing for the snap ring. If you have any other Odyssey repair videos I'd enjoy watching all of them...Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with those of us who are always learning and trying to do more with less!

Great video. I went to a pick a part and got my used pump for $43 with one year warranty as I didn't have time to buy a kit and rebuild everything however with my old pump I'll try to fix it and have a spare part for next time. Thanks!
This is a truly excellent video. Very well done. Almost makes me wish I owned an Odyssey so I can follow your lead.
I should mention, that when you are removing the pulley, you say you "believe this is normal left-handed threads", but then removal counter-clockwise demonstrates that it is right-handed. Left-handed threads are uncommon.
I think there's at least one other place in the video like that. Its an important distinction when you're using a breaker bar.

i did a backwards experimentation of what you did lol ... replaced high pressure hose first, which was leaking though, yet my pump was also leaking, so that got replaced within the next few days!

There is no way in hell I could of rebuilt the Power Steering Pump of my 2005 Honda Odyssey without this video. Thanks so much for taking the time for creating and editing this video. By the way, the only difference with the 2005 Od was how to loosen the tension on the belt. Oh yes, and it fixed the problem. Nice job.

I do suggest thread lock on the pulley nut. The whole reason i'm watching this video is mine fell off some time ago. The pulley and belt stayed on for how long without it . eventually the teeth on the pulley on the pump the car wouldn't drive. Great Video , very informative , thank you!
Both are very great videos; clear, well explained. I'm a new bee into the car stuff. This motivates me a lot in working on my odyssey 2005 in the future. Had changed the front brake pads and bled the brake on it 2 months ago. Next project on my plate is changing the engine/transmission mounts on the odyssey. My pump is driving me insane with its whining and i have 4 kids so it must be bad. I replaced the line orings and it reduced the noise to only when i hit the throttle. Ur video has gave me the confidence to tackle tge rebuild. Plus its alot cheaper. So thank u. Nicely done vid.

The manual does not specify a part number but it may be a NTN 6303LU (17x40x12). You should be able to cross reference the number off the old one and get one at a bearing shop, online, or an auto parts store like NAPA.

u could use the pliers u used to move the hose clamps to use as the special pulley tool to loosen the nut. i have the same pliers and i use them to loosen the cam pulley nut.
This video helped me out alot I was able to find the repair kit at Napa for 12.00$ thanks for posting.
Update following all your steps we got it done but the rebuild set did not come with the O ring for the high pressure line. Along with I found evidence that the pump had been under too much pressure that the barring had to be replaced.
Nice video. I would suggest cleaning all the dirt, oil and other crap off the outside of the housing prior to disassembly. No need to take an unnecessary change of getting debris inside of the pump. Reattaching the dirty high-pressure hose fitting into the pump body was one chance of contaminants entering the system. The o-ring replacement at the low-pressure elbow was another chance of introducing grit, dirt and assorted crap into the system.

@@WorseThanChiggers i changed both the low/high pres 'O' rings.. the sound is reduced much, but the steering is still a little stiff, but better. wonder if there is still air in the system. It is a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 with 106K miles
@@abemathew There could still very well be air trapped in the system and you'd want to go through the purge process again. Also check the fluid level in the reservoir and the belt tension.

Good video .. I’ve done this job, and never thought of removing the pulley from the pump first .. it sure gives easy access to the lower mounting bolt .. will do it that way next time .. BTW, its not at all necessary to drain and remove the reservoir.

Very informative video. I worked on hydraulics, and have one concern. When you placed the reservoir, there was nothing to stop grit from falling into the rubber tube, at 38.38 minutes. If that happens, it can cause the death of the pump internals. Scratches or valve jamb. Seal off every point of entry/exit until until the last second.
I own a 2005 Honda CR-V that was leaking steering pump fluid as well. There is a TSB from Honda indicating the issue and they stated to replace a failing O-ring on the low pressure return hose fitting to the pump. I am guessing that this might apply to other Honda vehicles as well. Maybe a complete rebuild would not be necessary. Great video with thorough details. Well done.

got a 90 accord ex. the original pump shaft that rotates the pulley has 1 raised notch and not the "cog" looking type. the new pump has a dip in the shaft where the notch is supposed 2 be so the pulley is spinning freely not grabbing the pump shaft. it came with the notch but in a separate bag and im not sure how to fit the metal notch in the pump shaft groove
For Honda Accord Owner: I've had 2 recalls from Honda deanship, one of the was replacing the entire power steering pump for FREE. So you guys should call and ask if your car have a recalls. I've 2003 Honda Accord Coupe V6 btw.
that's a 7th gen, mine is a 6th gen, the only recall I've seen on it is the air bag inflators on both sides

Thank you, very well done. Informative. I am doing the same job using a REBUILT unit. Rebuild is not always better than doing it your self. My unit REBUILT unit came with dirty red power steering fluid in it. As you noticed in your video the fluids are not red! Makes you wonder what quality inspection might have been with my unit.I was hoping you would have covered how to replace the belt, even if you didn't do it. It looks like a motor mount mystery be removed. Thanks, I just might keep my pump CORE and REBUILD it for myself or my dad's new Honda Odyssey.
Replacing the belt is not difficult but you do have to remove the engine mount bracket. Support the engine by lifting it slightly with a jack and a block of wood under the oil pan. Then you can easily remove the engine mount bracket and remove the belt.

Great video fixing the wrong problem. See his same video on fixing the power steering high pressure hose which was the real problem. I am shocked that the author, who seems very thorough and detailed, did not update this video telling everyone he had misdiagnosed the problem and that one should not attempt to rebuild the power steering pump until they thoroughly check the high pressure hose.

Still, I was really glad to have learned the process of rebuilding the pump for only the cost of the seal kit and to document the procedure for those who actually have that problem. I don't mind making mistakes while learning from you guys who provide such valuable feedback.

Hey everybody, I figured out how to remove the ball bearing. you use 2 sockets and a hand clamp. The bearing can only be removed one way and when you press it back on it has a lip/ edge so you do not want to force in on past that point. Make a note of which side the red bubber dust seal is facing on the shaft, the other side is a metal dust shield, do not reverse that orientation. Notice I put pressure on the inner metal wall of the bearing when installing, do not put pressure to the outer metal wall or you can destroy the new bearing. I'm very glad the video was helpful. I started with seven bottles since I did two complete flushes beforehand but did not show that process on this video. So my whole system was completely empty when I overhauled the pump. It took about two bottles to refill the system after each complete flush including bleeding out the air. I recommend having one more bottle on hand than anticipated in case it takes a little more. Good luck with yours. Let us know how it goes!

worsethanchiggers ok well I just finished the install. The old pump was making a weird clicking noise so I put in another pump. At first it was still making the whining/moaning noises and I thought I had just wasted a lot of time/effort. But I kept adding in more fluid and kept moving the wheels back and forth and voila! It doesn't have the issue anymore and all is well. For the record I got a used steering pump off of ebay for $50 to get rid of the clicking noise, got a $4 o-ring for the hose that goes into the reservoir that I'm pretty sure fixed the moaning, three bottles of Honda genuine steering fluid from the local Honda dealer for about $5 a bottle (rip off), and a $20 socket tool set from Lowes to do the install. After installing the o-ring and the other steering pump all is well. So hallelujah! Thanks again for the amazing video, saved my booty (:

There are several good videos here on UA-cam on how to do a fluid flush specifically on Hondas. Basically, you disconnect the return line from the reservoir, add an additional piece of hose, and run it into a bottle. Then briefly run the car to expel the fluid into the bottom while topping off the reservoir. I seem to remember flushing with several bottles.

Awesome video it really helped. Changed out leaking pump on 03 ody didn't have time or proper tools to overhaul. Replaced with remanufactured pump. Have you had to replace any motor mounts on your odyssey? I think that is next on the list.
That's certainly less work to replace the pump rather than doing an overhaul. I just thought it would be a good learning experience. Turns out I also have a leaking high pressure hose. I may make a video of that job, too. Yes, I've replaced the front and passenger side engine mounts a few years ago. It's a very straight forward process. Hope it goes well for you.

Got a rebuild pump and after I was done and bleed the system I couldn't turn the wheels with out raising the RPM quite a bit. So I will be sending it back for a new one.

Replace the o-ring on the low pressure side where it attaches to the pump. There's a TSB on that because air is drawn in at that connection causing noise. Other than that, be sure to properly bleed the system of air. If you still have noise, you may have a faulty pump or rack.

You skipped ahead around the 37 minute mark when you were reattaching the high pressure hose to the pump. You put the O-ring on, then pressed it in a little, but it didn't seat. Next we saw you snugging the bolts. Did you use the bolts to pull the pressure hose in to seat, or were you able to seat it by hand before tightening the bolts?
I completed the rebuild, which I wouldn't have attempted without having seen your excellent video. But on that step, I think I damaged the O-ring trying to get it to seat. It absolutely would not by hand. I tightened it down and sprayed out a bunch of fluid.
Eventually I got things working again using a nitrile O-Ring from a a cheap Harbor Freight assortment. (Yeah, crazy, I know). This time I carefully aligned the hose and alternately tightened down the 2 bolts until they were seated. Before the final one, I experimented a few times wiggling and jiggling and trying to seat the O-rings which showed me how I damaged the first one. Fortunately there were several in the assortment.
I'm wondering if I couldn't seat it by hand because of hydraulic pressure when there is a seal. With no O-ring the hose would seat freely.
Any guess whether nitrile will hold up? The O-ring kit says its good for hydraulic fluid.
I have genuine Honda O-rings on order, so I'll probably only rely on the cheap one for a few days.
I love observant viewers and you identified an important issue that others may encounter. I, too, had issues with getting my o-ring to seat properly and the experience was almost exactly like what you described. In hind sight, it would have been better to capture the struggles on video as well as the eventual resolution. However, I eventually stopped the camera at that point thinking that there was no need to capture the continuing struggles on wasted raw video just to be edited out later. I, too, damaged the o-ring by tightening the bolts before it was properly seated. I think it's less of a hydraulic pressure issue and more that it is just a very snug fit between mating surfaces. It gets caught on the lip of the opening thus being squashed and torn on one side. My resolution was the same in that I used another o-ring, coincidentally also from a Harbor Freight kit, and worked to get it properly seated with plenty of new fluid to lubricate it before tightening the bolts. It took some careful twisting and rocking before it eased in. That's when the video resumes. My opinion is that the Harbor Freight nitrile (green) or vitron (red) o-rings are of good quality and are perfectly good substitutes. You won't go wrong with swapping that out for a genuine Honda o-ring but, personally, I'd leave it alone since you successfully got it installed and it isn't leaking. Thanks a ton for pointing that out and sharing your experience.
