@@SouthpawAutoworks All good! Hey, on a pump like this, they have a bit of in/out play right? My alternator belt disintegrated and stringy pieces got really stuck behind the pumps pulley. Is it possible that this can upset the amount of play? As a result of the stringy pieces i had to replace the seal but now my pump is loosing pressure (noise when turn steering wheel goes away with a few revs). There was no obvious damage inside the pump and i've had it apart twice checking the orientation of the parts, but i still get the whine and stiff steering. Cheers!
On the Honda pump used in the video series, I do not believe that there was any shaft end-play. The shaft bearing is pressed onto the shaft. That shaft and bearing are then pressed into the pump housing, and held in place with a snap ring. There's no way for the shaft to move inward/outward (no end-play). I imagine that this is the case for most power steering pumps...however, I could be wrong.
Generally speaking, pumps make noise when they ingest air. So, if the fluid level is low, it'll ingest air, resulting in the buzzing/whining sound. Also, worn out/damaged O-rings/seals can allow air to get sucked into the pump, too. For example, there's an O-ring on the inlet port hose bib of the Honda power steering pump. When that O-ring fails to work properly, it allows air to be sucked into the pump.

I would imagine so. However, oils typically have anti-foaming agents added to them, to help reduce foaming. Foaming can cause problems with main bearing clearances on engines, among other things.

Robert - i installed back the pump, was not able to remove the old pulley and bearing but they are still working fine, GUESS WHAT?? my PS is now working once again, like you said i might encounter several issues, different scenarios or problems, old bolt was stripped, i can't find repair kit, i just bought some O-rings, BUT I'M SOOO HAPPY... glad i found your guide, will try upload my video, will link your vids, thanks a lot bro.. i hope you can upload more vids about hondas specially the EG hatch or civic FD

Yo, Southpaw, you went all philosophical at the end, which I don't mind. Except the quote from Henry Ford, who I absolutely despise for various reasons. Even though, what he said was a good quote {I still can't stomach the guy}. But aside from all that, your, "how to", video is right up there with the best of the best. So, thank you for taking the time to be so thorough!!
Since I don't have a press I'm going to try using a Ball And U-Joint Service Set that I got from Rock Auto, which I have yet to try out. Unless you wouldn't recommend it. And, I'll be working on a pump out of a 2001 Kia Optima. Should be real fun, Yeah?
What I, just now, discovered, though, is that the first O-ring that you instructed to take out from the low pressure inlet port wasn't even installed, in the first place, when they switched out the pump a few years ago. The guy, apparently, did a rush job. And, when I went back to the same outfit, here in SLO Town, they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about as I tried to question them about the extra whining sound I was hearing. So, basically I've been having to drive it this way for the last few years. And recently, I even had to switch out the rack and pinion.
Simply install the missing O-ring and skip the whole rebuild process, maybe?? Because, all I need right now is to fix the air from getting in there. What thinkest thou? Bad idea?? Maybe worth a shot???

Sounds like putting the O-ring in first would be easy enough to try and see if it works. And then go from there. I'd like to hear what you decide to do, and how it goes.
@@SouthpawAutoworks Well, I just now looked at the gasket rebuild kit and it seems to not have that first, smaller gasket as part of the kit. Also, I just checked the shaft by spinning it and I can hear the bearings clicking against themselves as you spin it in a back and forth motion which may or may not indicate that they need to be switched out. I don't know enough to know either way. But, I fear that the O-ring might be unobtainable

Bearings shouldn't make any noise like that. Some time ago, during a transmission rebuild, I spent quite a while looking through a rebuild kit for a missing O-ring. Turned out it was hiding inside of the extension housing seal. It fit perfectly inside of it. Thought I'd throw that out there.

I have a Honda Accord 2011 model and there is a oil leakage on the low compressor valve and while steering left and right there is a noise.
Could you pls advise whether it is advisable to rebuild the same power steering pump or buy a new one.
Also what can be the cause of the noise..should i replace the bearings as well on the power steering pump.

Seals:
Tired seals will cause leaks. Additionally, bad seals can also cause power steering noise. If there's a bad seal is on the suction side of the system, air can then get sucked into the pump. Air in the pump creates noise.
Bearing:
The bearing can be inspected when the pump is apart. Should rotate smoothly. If you spin it by hand, quickly, the bearing should come to stop, all on its own, pretty quickly. However, if the bearing continues to spin, and comes to a stop slowly, it's a sign of a bearing that will fail in the near future. There's grease inside the bearing. When the grease starts drying up, the bearing will spin for a long time.
Rebuild VS Purchase:
That's your call...
Last time I checked, it was a lot more cost effective to purchase a rebuild/reseal kit, as opposed to purchasing a reman unit.
There are other factors to consider when rebuilding/resealing:
1). Time involved.
2). Might need to purchase tools.
3). No guarantees that it will be a success.
4). Potential frustration.
5). Etc.
But, then again, it could work out great, could save money, the experience could be a confidence-builder, etc.
You should be able to find comments in this video series, of other people successfully rebuilding their power steering pumps. It's possible...
Once again, that's your call.

On 09:55 Can we use Power Steering Pump Fluid to lubricate the seal instead of the Blue Gel grease ?
Hi. Thanks for making this series. Do the vanes ever need to be replaced? Would you get them to buy? Can the flow control valve be repaired or replaced if its bad? And what about the sub valve ?
Installing new vanes would be a plus, however, I previously had trouble sourcing them. Maybe the dealer carries them...

Too cool. I have 189,000 on my 2007 Civic 2-door EX. The front seal is leaking I think. Interesting but there is no oil on the drive belt. Do you normally need to replace vanes? Is there a wear length tolerance?
Ideally, it would be best to replace the old vanes with new ones. However, at the time of making the video, I wasn't able to find replacement ones quickly/easily.
I imagine there is a tolerance. I don't have the spec for it.

Great video!! Couple questions: what is the success rate of rebuilding yourself? I’ve got a growl but no leaks and no fluid loss. I’m apprehensive a rebuild with a seal kit won’t cure the growl. Also, I have a 2001 Tundra 3.4l V6
2001Tundra 3.4l V6 that has no bosses or grooves on the pulley, so I wonder how to get the pulley off (referencing a standard pulley puller).
Like I mentioned in the video series, I can't guarantee anyone's success. Setbacks are a part of learning new things.

Reseal kits are generally pretty inexpensive.
If you're hearing a growling sound coming from the pump, you may have a pump bearing that's failing.
I'm not familiar with your particular setup. Some pump pulleys come right off of the shaft, after removing the nut. Other pulleys require additional tools (pulley puller).
Thanks for the quick response. There is no nut on the pulley shaft so I assume it’s pressed on. But with no groove on the pulley, there’s no way to use the pulley puller. I’m wondering if the shaft will come out with the pulley attached. I’ll find out as I’m going to do this soon. Once again, thanks for the response and a great video. A clearer picture of what I’m talking about would be visible looking at reman pump pictures online (Rock Auto, Amazon, NAPA, etc.)
I looked at the photos. I see what you mean.
After doing some more digging, I discovered two (2) things:
1). I previously mentioned a bearing. It looks as though this unit is not equipped with a ball bearing. Instead, this design utilizes a bushing...that the pulley (and vane ring) shaft rides on. You mentioned a grinding noise. I responded with a ball bearing failure being the possible cause for the noise. That's no longer the case...
2). The pulley is pressed to the shaft. It looks as though the shaft has a snap ring, located at the opposite end of the shaft (Clarification: the pulley is located at the front of the pump. The snap ring is located at the rear of the pump). Looks like you might be able to gain access to the snap ring by removing the rear pump housing cover. With the snap ring removed, I imagine that you'll be able to remove the pulley, and shaft, out of the pump housing, through the front of the unit. With the pulley out of the way, you should be able to gain access to the front seal, for replacement.

Bruh southpaw, its 2am now i watched part 1 and 3, i may need to watch part 2, this is the same PS pump installed on my eg hatch, i wanna jump into to my garage right now and wanna give it a shot, i paid $80usd and previous mechanic made a mess, i told him that PS pump pulley bolt is on a reverse thread, he told me that they fixed a lot of pumps already and was not on reverse thread ( so previous mech was indeed wrong and now my PS pump is not working ) my only problem is looking for a repair kit, ANYONE KNOWS THE PART # FOR THE REPAIR KIT ON THIS EXACT MODEL?

Full disclosure, I'm not up to speed on the "eg hatch". Identifying all of the different trim packages, for most vehicles, is beyond my area of expertise.
I Googled "eg hatch." Best I could tell, it's a Honda Civic (CX or DX) ranging from 91-95. Based off of this finding, I put together some info for you. I hope this helps...

Can the pump cover be turned around for the back bracket to point to the desire directio?
I don't think so....
There's two alignment dowel pins that locate the pump intermals, and the cover. The pins are two didderent lengths and diameters.
I could be wrong. Just sharing my thoughts. Hope it helps.

I had to hunt through the junkyard for a donor unit.
If your bearing has legible numbers on it (identification), a good parts guy/gal (at your local parts house) may be able to track down a replacement bearing for you.
No way I could do this without getting at least 1 cat hair into that pump.
Those oiled air filters (for engines) are great for capturing contaminants. Oily parts on a bench are 2nd best.
do you have idea what is happening in my case: pump and rack were ok, but lines were rusty with no leaks, so i decided to prevent fail of rusted pipe so i took it out and i brought to shop that makes hydraulic lines and they made same , i installed it and filled tank with oil and spun pump with electric motor to fill lines what it did, i added more oil in tank and then i started engine, but steering wheel was heavy , it became lighter only over 3000rpm, did i destroyed pump somehow?, there always was oil in system, pump never worked on dry, oil is clear with no metal dust or parts, on idle there is on signs of oil flow what could be seen before

@@SouthpawAutoworks no noise at all even on end of travel where used to make noise, it seams that pump vanes extend only on high rpm, at idle when i look in tank , it seams there is no fluid flow,
@@SouthpawAutoworks new things, i spoke with my mechanic and he suggested to install oem line to see if it will work, i did and no, same thing but guy that made lines said that in pump is valve that can be blocked if pump worked on dry,
