Also, when my wheel knuckle when out on my previous car it did so after generating some serious heat in the rotor/caliper... literally on fire. The failure happened on loose red dirt.. common in my home town for equestrian stuff and the superheated dirt was baked onto one of my rims.. it's chippable to remove but i'm not trying to take a chisel to my rims. Suggestions?

    I clean my 2009 SL550 powdered calipers (fronts with MB logo) every time I'm done driving the car. The OEM pads leave alot of dust-->switching to Akebono's ceramic EURO both front and back. The car has 19" AMG rims with 951 pckge--> those get clean as well. CLEANING--> clean damp rag. For heavy deposits I use a blue shop towel and spray BRAKLEEN on the towel and a used toothbrush to get every nook-and-cranny. Car has under 14k miles and both front calipers look new.....both sides of the caliper.

    I would Cerakote the calipers. its a ceramic based coating that is used on guns, and lots of guys with stuntbikes use it too. you put it with the gyeon or whatever brand of ceramic protective coating and it should be wipe off for any dust. I know guys that painted the heads on their engines, their turbo housings, frames and wheels with Cerakote, and headers on bikes with the high temp oven cured kind.
    its lays on really, really thin though.

    Iron remover is a relatively new product that is available to the consumers. In the past, both professionals and consumers use highly acidic wheel cleaners to clean wheels and calipers. While they are fine for organic and asbestos based brake pads, they are inadequate for newer brake systems from the late 90's. Over the years, metallic contents are becoming larger parts of brake pad formulas, these metallic contents stick inside wheel clear coats and calipers. Traditional acidic wheel cleaners are no longer suitable for newer cars. For about a decade, the only solution to prevent baked on metallic on wheels and calipers was to frequently clean the wheels. People realize that washing your wheels once a week is not a permanent solution, especially for people living in condos and apartments or during winter climates. So detailers started to find a solution to this problem. There are industrial solutions that are designed to react with and loosen metallic contents. Detailers tried them on wheels and found them to work just fine. So this is how iron remover was invented. Also. although they are called iron remover, they actually react with all sorts of metals. Iron remover just sounds better. Also, iron remover can be used on white cars. Over time, people notice that white paint become yellow. Using iron remover on white paint jobs can also restore lighter color paint jobs.

    • @thearcher1740
      @thearcher1740 5 років тому

      Ha yes sir! I wouldn't even think of cleaning regular 1-2 piston floating style caliper. They're small/less visible and don't look appealing even when clean.
      On a high performance car with 4-6 piston HUGE brakes, perfectly clean calipers paired w/ some 5 spoke wheels, can make a big difference. Counter intuitively, the waxing / ceramic coating / sealant is probably most required on these calipers as they see the most amount of brake/rail/iron dust. So they are in most need of a sacrificial layer to expedite cleaning.
      Also, one of my cars is a GM (Camaro SS) ;-) See caliper pic below!
