    This was exactly what I needed to hear, my 2 new piggies have been too scared to drink so I'm going to try the cucumber trick. That should keep them hydrated until they dare to take a sip

      This is so helpful. Thank you. Just one question...when you need to clean and they are new and terrified ...hoe do you do it ?? Also needing to deep clean. I'll have to take them out of cage and into a play pen etc...I tried today but they squealed:( one of them sometimes eats from.my hand now ...) the other is terrified. Day one
      ......day 2 tomorrow. I'm fostering xxxxx

      @@melodymoments614 clean one half of a cage at a time. They will have some safe space to hide while cleaning and you don't have to stress them by picking them up when they are not ready yet. Mine quickly grew to love cleaning cause they get to investigate the dustpan

    My guinea died 3 days ago from a stroke or heart attack, so we got squeak a new friend, the new little baby has a big age gap and he keeps snuggling him when we introduce them, but squeak isn’t being mean- which is good.
    They are so cute and Bubbles seems to think squeak is his mum 🥰🥰🥰

    Hi, an excellent video als always. When I got my last piggi 9 months ago I was lucky. The baby bonded immediatly to an experienced lady piggi. And 1 hour later the baby did the highest popcorns I ever saw. She was then fully adopted the the new home and the new group. On the other hand years ago I got a very young lady from the rescure. It was so shy that she was hidding in a house. But one of my very experienced ladys brought here a pice of cucumber in the house the young lady was hidding. This young piggi had a bad start in here live. She was rescued from an garbage can. But after 2 years she had lost all here fears and trusted humans again.

    When you brought our first 3 piggies home, they were really not used to being handled and were very nervous. I found a really long Romaine lettuce leaf was great to encourage them with hand feeding as it meant they could safely have a nibble but still be quite a long distance away from me, bless them! They were soon enjoying Peaflakes and taking them out of my hand. Thank you for another lovely video Sarah and great to see how the four of them are getting along so nicely together. I bet the babies have really grown?! x :-)

    Me and my boyfriend got ourselves two guinea pigs pretty recently, only 3 weeks old. We were told by the lady at the pet store, who have many guinea pigs herself, to leave tha cage open and not have any hiding spots for the piggies out. This way, they will get used to you roaming around more easily, and will in general be more accepting towards your movements.
    We made sure they had plenty of hay in a corner to hide in, but other than that nothing. It worked for us, after only one week they seekm so much more trusting. They have hiding huts now but are not glued to them. Just thought I'd let people know, since it seems normal to give them a hiding space from the beginning, and I honestly think this will make the process of bonding with them much slower.

    Hey everyone, I bought 2 male cavies about 3 days ago and I love em. They are very scared of me but after a day of adjusting they are eating their veggies. So far the only things I've done to bond are sit next to their cage and talk to them after feeding time (10am and 10pm). Whenever I enter the room they run, and same when im feeding them they run and hide for a few minutes before finally coming out to eat. Just wondering if maybe there's something extra I should do to get then to acclimate a bit quicker?

    There are different ways of helping your Guinea Pigs feel at home, some people pretend to ignore them for 2 days and some people cuddle them and talk to them, I think the cuddle and talking method is better. If you have Guinea Pigs that are already used to the routine and confident then the new members will start to copy them and get to know you quicker.

It was a lovely sound after 5 weeks. I used a dark box picking them up. I'm used to birds. Yes I had the cage set up, the WRONG cage (petshop). Don't pick them up from above, my big mistake.

    Hi. I've just brought home 3 baby sows. I've just witnessed a "play dead" ! Even though I knew about it, it's still a scary, worried few moments! They're all hiding after gently entering their new home. My Boar (who lost his cage mate recently😢) was, at first, curious of his new neighbours, has decided to "leave home" and hide behind the chair across the living room! 🤣
    For obvious reasons my piggies will have to admire/gossip/argue etc through the fence 🤭.
    Tipsy is almost 5 years old and can still have his door open to roam if he feels like it. ( supervised!) The girls are enclosed and in time can explore when they feel brave enough! Bless, they're soooo adorable! ❤
    Everything went well on their journey home, just 15 minutes.
    I can hear some activity coming from behind me.....its just after 5pm. Tipsy will no doubt tell the girls the routine and what delicious treats are in store as well, when he decides to make his way home.....!!
    Now.....time to pick some names for my "newbies" ......🤔
    Take Care and Keep Safe.
    Love your channel and your piggies 😍❤

    My piggies (2 boys) are a bit over 2 years old now and very skittish still. In fact, I only just held them in my arms for the first time the other day because they're so scared. It felt amazing to hold them and I want to hold them more, but I just don't want them to feel scared! The main problem is just getting them out of their cage. They act like I'm going to kill them and I don't blame them, as they are prey animals. It's very hard. I should've tried harder... I just hate to upset them/stress them out.

    Super useful. Also, I think having older pigs around might help with taming; they learn from watching other pigs, sometimes quite quickly.

      @@SqueakDreams Right, herd animal behavior- if the older pigs are out and about, they can assume there isn't a threat. Also, they can hide under the older pigs!

  • @musicalmarion
    @musicalmarion 4 роки тому +5

    It definitely helps if there are older piggies in the cage too, they follow their direction and don't bolt so much. It's important to keep up the contact, because Guinea Pigs will forget being safely handled if you lose interest. Picking up a tunnel or a hide with them inside is the best way to catch them. I don't necessarily agree about waiting 2 weeks before starting taming, I think they don't have much sense of time so I would begin after a few hours. It depends on how much they've already been handled. Also it can be harder after allowing a long time of them running away, because they have spent a longer time reinforcing that reaction to you. I think males are braver than females to tame, but I'm sure many will disagree?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  4 роки тому +2

      Oh yes it helps for sure! And I think I meant about the handling - one to two weeks if they are very skittish, but taming with food and petting can stay right after they have been left overnight to settle in. 😀

    Thank you so much for all your advice. I have just rescued a Guinea pig that was in a house with 2 medium size dogs, one being a boxer and 2 young children. So I have had him 4 days and have been talking to him and sitting back from his cage so that he has space. I have never owned a Guinea pig before so your videos are helping me and I am also learning from the g.pig himself. Yesterday he ate his vegetables in my presence and also today too, he also ran round his cage and wheeked...does this mean he is happy please? He seemed to be happy and even came right up to the cage and looked at me. I have always had cats and have one still but I am keeping him away fom the cage. Both the cat and the Guinea pig have black fur, so I am hoping they will be friends! One in the cage and one outside of course, ha ha!! Love your Guinea pigs. 😁🐹🐈

      Did you own one? And if you did, how did he end up in that situation! I currently have adopted a single pig because hes a runt and was being bullied by others, he is 5 months old so I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to introduce him to a friend right now, please give me advice. 😭😭

    What do you wash the fleece blankets with for the piggies. Just vinegar or unscented laundry soap.

    I am seeing this so late, I just got my piggie yesterday, 12 week old male, he is very very skittish but the second I pick him up he hides between my neck and hair, and won't move. I did have him snuggling underneath my blankets last night, and he started making a few little noises. He did eat but didn't drink, and is still very shy, but super sweet... I just worry that me trying to gently hold him showing him that I won't hurt him is actually scaring him more.
    I also gave him some Timothy Hay and he is finally munching a bit.

    I just brought my new girl home. Unfortunatly she has to be quarentined before she can be introduced to my other pig (she's not in ideal health because while her previous owners cared about her they were a bit misinformed), and the only place she can be quarentined is my bedroom, so I'm in there a lot. Luckily she seems to be settling in well and has even come out of the hides and explored the cage a few times while I'm in the room

      Awh bless her, it sounds like she's lucky to have found a new home with you - hopefully the quarantine goes okay and she can meet her new friend/s soon! 😍

    This was VERY helpful. I just brought home two piggies, a brother and sister who are the sweetest. The problem is we have to wait for a few weeks until the little boy has his appointment for getting neutered, they definitely would be happier together but we don't want babies! I kept wondering should I let them have time together?? But it sounds like I should let them get used to being in separate cages (since we have 4 weeks until the appointment) And just leave them be so they can settle in.

      @@SqueakDreams I meant that I didn't hand feed to bond on purpose 😂😂.
      Also I was wondering, does your opinion change on keeping pairs depending on if it's 2 males or 2 females

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  3 роки тому +1

      @@frasermartin345 I think 2 females or 2 males can make equally good pairings. Males can be more difficult to bond if two adults, but two young males or an older male and a baby will normally bond okay. Some says males can be more confident and friendly with us humans too. But either option is great!

    Hi! Thank you for your videos. I am a new guinea pig owner and have had our piggies for almost a week (they are about 7 weeks old). I enjoy watching your videos and learning how to bond and take care our our fur babies. Our piggies are still very scared of us but one in particular still refuses to be around when he are near by. My question is, how do you take them out to clean their cage when they bold and make it hard to pet in order to pick up? We really want to make sure that we keep their space clean but it is hard when we can't take them out. Help! Thank you again.

    We just bought 2 baby guinea pigs. One is a Tri color Abyssinian and the other is a Red&White. The Tri color is super super terrified, and we have been trying to just hold treats but she runs and hides at the sight or sound of anything and everything. The Red/White one is coming around. But the Tri hides under anything and everything. We don’t have a confident adult here, would it help getting a confident adult? Or do we return her to the store? We prepared the night before, and brought both them home in a carrier. What do we do? We have been providing fresh hay, veggies, and water.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  3 роки тому

      Don't take her back, she is more shy but keep up the good work and she will learn to be brave. Confidence takes time with pigs, just like with humans. Roxy was extremely shy as a baby but at 10 month old she is a lovely girl always being for treats!
