Coopster, you got to be the man on this guitars, outstanding. love watching your videos. love the comparisons of Gibson to Epi's you do. Thanks for taking the time to do this. It's help me out tremendously
@MorrisseyMarr95 Amen! In Rush's early period, Alex Lifeson played with a lot of distortion on his semi-hollow Gibson ES-355. Nothing wrong with it at all. As you say, this guitar is VERY versatile (not to mention a great deal for the price)! I have a Dot myself, in vintage sunburst, and I absolutely love it!
It's not about a guitar being for metal or jazz or blues or whatever, it's about it being more well suited to a particular type of music, which really doesn't mean shit. With that out of the way, I dig your playing.
I refinish guitars. I placed a Gibson template over the head of my Dot and cut out a Gibson head stock shape. Found a decal on eBay. I later Sold it on eBay with full disclosure that it was an Epi Dot. Enough wood in the headstock on these which makes it an easy conversion. I also matched the red on the sides with a perfect blend.
I went to buy an epiphone dot today, but when i got there they only had a left-hander, i'm going back o wednesday to see if they have a right hander in, it really does sound great.
Depends if you've got the right equipment. I dont own one myself hoping to get one in the future but from what people have told me it'll handle pretty much anything if you've got the right amp etc. Its a really good guitar :)
@Tapiola2007 I own a black one and I have fitted a trapeze tailpiece on it and taken off the pick up covers and changed the control knobs to tele style chrome ones..I play metal and hard rock and own some nice old guitars, among them a 62 strat and a 64 tele and I find myself using the dot a lot more..Its not as comfy as a strat but I love the feel of the neck and I think to be honest that amplification is prob more imp for sounds. I use an ibanez tube screamer thru a Marshall valvestate ..
@jerydab Actually that is not entirely true. The ES-335, Casino, and Es 330 were all released the same year in 1958. Gibson has owned Epiphone since 1957. The Casino is actually Epis version of the ES-330, but is just subsequently more popular since it was the instrument of choice of the Beatles. At the time Epiphone and Gibsons were made side by side in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
@mitchellyoungable i play an epiphone dot too. the action on my one is nice and low but thats adjustable if you prefer it higher and the neck is thick and really comfortable to play on. hope this helps :)
its about time someone shredded the shit out of a guitar like this. I fucking hate looking for a demo of a Dot or a Gretsch or any other type of 'jazz/blues' style guitar and finding that most of the videos are people going slow as fuck with barely any distortion, playing slow blues over a cheesy backing track, despite the title saying overdrive..........whoa...glad i got that off my chest..
@happyending3000 It sounds really dumb but a cloth strap helps. I have a bass with really bad dive and I have both the regular (nylon?) and cotton straps and the cotton one kinda grips your shirt so it doesn't slide much.
Blink 182's Tom Delonge uses a 335 with an dirty pickup which is an alternative punk also: Sick Puppies frontman uses an 335 and they are a little heavy alternative
@Epidot335 And also, I'm strongly considering getting a dot but using to play heavier music too. thanks for having this video up to show how well the dot handles heavier stuff. any mods on it?
it's got an incredible range of sound. actually, eiphone dot was used by john lennon [he had a natural color dot], you cn see it when they played onthe roof in LONDON, what's more it's good for jazz and blues - the neck pickup makes it soft and warm, but if you set this baby into high tone distortion it really can roock out. I mean, Edge from U2 uses it, and he can rock out really well, also Oasis uses epihone dot, as well as Green day, Queens of the stone age... maybe not death metal, but still
@youngaikidoka hehehe yes I get you and I totally agree! I bought me a Dot because it sounds very good for blues, and many blues artists play them, but it seems the Dot can be used for metal too. I'm not really a metal fan, but this tone is nice. So if it sounds nice, why don't use it for that kind of music? So I agree with you. But it looks a bit weird to play metal with a Dot, because they are usually used for blues and jazz and that kind of stuff! :p
exactly! what pissed me off when i got this guitar is people telling me "thats a jazz guitar" ah shutup i can tap on that thing with overdrive on all the way just like any other guitar
@Epidot335 Yeah pay no attention, I wanted to know how well this guitar could handle OTHER types of sounds instead of just blues, and it took me ages to find someone actually doing something unique with it.
What pick are you using? I have noticed the ring over your thumb, are you using a thumb pick or just a regular pick with some sort of thumb ring? Because that would be super cool, no more slipping picks...
@youngaikidoka Why is it close minded to class a guitar in a certain genre? The epiphone dot was originally jazz-based, but is actually very allround, from jazz to blues to metal (I have one myself), but some guitars can't play different genres. You can't play metal on my peerless jazz guitar, because the strings are too thick and too high above the neck, so you can hardly bend or play very fast! So why close minded, it's just a fact.
@dvdsmlprstylr An L5 is a totally different breed to a Epi dot...Its a lot more to do with effects and amplification..I have an extensive guitar collection and my dot is prob the cheapest I own but if I put it thru my Marshall valvestate on a clean channel it sound sweet and crisp as does my 62 strat..BUT put it on channel 2, turn up the gain and it sounds as down and dirty as any other guitar..Especially when you add an Ibanez tubescreamer into the mix..It howls away..I love them
You can really rip it up! And yeah so what if its on a dot? It's a great guitar. Just ask Dave Grohl, Noel Gallagher or Tom Delonge if these guitars are built to rock.
Ah they arent. I have one, and It'll handle anything. I like 'em better than gibsons. They are a lot more durable and come from the factory nicer. btw the vid sounds great!
can u go soft tone (elvis, JC, beatles, rockabilly) to hard(metal. modern punk, hard rock)? on one of these? cause i might buy this instead of an ep sg or a squire telecaster.
So he played a bit of metal on a semi hollow body guitar. So what? Hendrix played his guitar with his teeth, sat on fire and played it behind his back and you close minded people have the audacity to tell this man that he can't do this to his guitar?! You guys should be ashamed of yourselves! Anyway.. I agree with @youngaikdoka and @tegolin. And besides this guitar is pretty versatile! I can't to get it tomorrow! :D
@tiddlywinks98712 There's not that much gain...and besides, music is about expressing what you're feeling, so if he's feeling a lot of gain then so be it.
finally found someone actually playing this guitar instead of tickling it
I just watched a bunch of your Dot videos, and you're a total hero because I am now fully decided that I will buy one of these guitars.
Awesome.
I love that he puts his foot up... It helps you rock harder.
Coopster, you got to be the man on this guitars, outstanding. love watching your videos. love the comparisons of Gibson to Epi's you do. Thanks for taking the time to do this. It's help me out tremendously
dont get why people are complaining about him playing metal on this guitar, surely its a good thing because it shows how versatile this guitar is!
I don't know what I found more entertaining. This, or your fast slap solo on the U.S J-Bass...
Awesome. I'm refinishing an epiphone dot and it's my first electric. Good to see what tones I can look forward to.
Beautiful guitar and really great guitarsolo! Thumbs up
@MorrisseyMarr95 Amen! In Rush's early period, Alex Lifeson played with a lot of distortion on his semi-hollow Gibson ES-355. Nothing wrong with it at all. wow i didnt know this guitar could that good of distortion tone. great playing
It's not about a guitar being for metal or jazz or blues or whatever, it's about it being more well suited to a particular type of music, which really doesn't mean shit.
With that out of the way, I dig your playing.
You have killed all my doubts sound wise about this guitar.
Finally, a guy that deserves the guitar...
im getting one of these tomorrow! im excited. awesome by the way :)
I love the sound of a nasty Semi hollow! Very cool!
Sure this is an Epiphone? What an AWESOME sound!
@tegolin that is so true! as long as you feel comfortable with a guitar i think you can play everyting!
I went to buy an epiphone dot today, but when i got there they only had a left-hander, i'm going back o wednesday to see if they have a right hander in, it really does sound great.
Id have to say one oh my favourite solos ive ever heard on youtube did you right that like I would out that on a Ipod if a had one!
WOW!! Great solo dude!! :)
Sweet playing dude !
Depends if you've got the right equipment. I dont own one myself hoping to get one in the future but from what people have told me it'll handle pretty much anything if you've got the right amp etc. Its a really good guitar :)
SICK! GREAT VID!
one of the best epiphone's guitar ;) , you can prove it in the video
@Tapiola2007 I own a black one and I have fitted a trapeze tailpiece on it and taken off the pick up covers and changed the control knobs to tele style chrome ones..I play metal and hard rock and own some nice old guitars, among them a 62 strat and a 64 tele and I find myself using the dot a lot more..Its not as comfy as a strat but I love the feel of the neck and I think to be honest that amplification is prob more imp for sounds. This is either a heavy blues solo or a bluesy metal solo. Either way it's fuckin awesome.
I want to put a seymore duncan sh 8 in the bridge of one of these. Good times. Nice playing
@tegolin for sure man, i use man jackson rr5 for jazz, and my dot for metal (interchangably, of course)
metallica fan! i feel yah!
Rock on brother!!
wow! cool solo! this vid prooves that epi dot can be in any genre :D haha
I just bought one today!
@mitchellyoungable i play an epiphone dot too. the action on my one is nice and low but thats adjustable if you prefer it higher and the neck is thick and really comfortable to play on. hope this helps :)
its about time someone shredded the shit out of a guitar like this. i like the sound of a semi hollow with a lot of distortion, theres more body and low end.
@happyending3000 It sounds really dumb but a cloth strap helps. I have a bass with really bad dive and I have both the regular (nylon?) and cotton straps and the cotton one kinda grips your shirt so it doesn't slide much.
@lukew0067 awsome! thanks for the help man
Interesting, never actually saw anyone play this stuff on a hollow body, but sounds great!
that was cool
Ted Nugent also ripped on a hollow body guitar, the dot is an awesome guitar and dude you really can play!!
Blink 182's Tom Delonge uses a 335 with an dirty pickup which is an alternative punk
also:
Sick Puppies frontman uses an 335 and they are a little heavy alternative
i have one of those too
nasty sound
I LUV IT
haha sounds badass! Glad I'm buying one :D
@Epidot335 And also, I'm strongly considering getting a dot but using to play heavier music too. thanks for having this video up to show how well the dot handles heavier stuff. any mods on it?
his "333" is a modified version of a 335 with only one pickup, a gibson dirty fingers pickup, a has only a volume knob, no tone knob
Man that sounds great. U got stock PUPS in it or did you change 'em out? What gauge strings U using?
it's got an incredible range of sound. actually, eiphone dot was used by john lennon [he had a natural color dot], you cn see it when they played onthe roof in LONDON, what's more it's good for jazz and blues - the neck pickup makes it soft and warm, but if you set this baby into high tone distortion it really can roock out. I mean, Edge from U2 uses it, and he can rock out really well, also Oasis uses epihone dot, as well as Green day, Queens of the stone age... maybe not death metal, but still
sorry to ruin your 12 years hope but lennon used epi casino
@@pazlyband I learnt that somewhere along the way, yep. Lol my comment's so nooby after all those years :D
@youngaikidoka hehehe yes I get you and I totally agree! I bought me a Dot because it sounds very good for blues, and many blues artists play them, but it seems the Dot can be used for metal too. But it looks a bit weird to play metal with a Dot, because they are usually used for blues and jazz and that kind of stuff! :p
how do you make it sound like this? any mods? amp? because mine just sounds muddy and gross, don't really have money for pickups :/
hey epidot, i just have some questions about the guitar, does it have low action, and is the neck very thick? awsome video btw
You my friend are a bad man.
exactly! what pissed me off when i got this guitar is people telling me "thats a jazz guitar" ah shutup i can tap on that thing with overdrive on all the way just like any other guitar
well you can't argue with the versitility of this guitar i suppose ;)
you killed the purpose of that guitar
@Epidot335 Yeah pay no attention, I wanted to know how well this guitar could handle OTHER types of sounds instead of just blues, and it took me ages to find someone actually doing something unique with it.
Cool guitar. I am curious what type of amp are you using? Thanks
@tegolin but there's jazz or metal pickups.
@MorrisseyMarr95 Dude...that's the greatest comment EVER...thak u so much!
What pick are you using? I have noticed the ring over your thumb, are you using a thumb pick or just a regular pick with some sort of thumb ring? Because that would be super cool, no more slipping picks...
@tegolin
AMEN!!!
Hammer, so ein Zeug auf einer Epi Dot. Mag zwar Blues lieber, aber trotzdem gut, dass einer mal nicht nach Schema F denkt!
Y-O-U A-R-E A-W-E-S-O-M-E
Thanx!
holy crap! i play rock and heavy metal. i think this might be perfect lol just a different color

@jflores85 I wanna know the same thing, I'm either getting this one or a tele.
@tegolin That's Right !!!!
can this be used not just for blues, rock, can it be used for metal
tom delonge and dave grohl play semi hollow guitars?
95% of tone is in the hands. Anyone who says different is lying.
can u go soft tone (elvis, JC, beatles, rockabilly) to hard(metal. modern punk, hard rock)? on one of these? cause i might buy this instead of an ep sg or a squire telecaster.
So he played a bit of metal on a semi hollow body guitar. So what?

Anyway.. I agree with @youngaikdoka and @tegolin.
And besides this guitar is pretty versatile! I can't to get it tomorrow! :D
Are you using stock pick ups - only asking because of the title, (ES-335 is the grade for the Gibson version).
@tiddlywinks98712 There's not that much gain...and besides, music is about expressing what you're feeling, so if he's feeling a lot of gain then so be it.
can you post a video of like a metallica song?
@MorrisseyMarr95 besto coment on youtube ever made !
never really herd a 335 used like that lol
what do you think
Help me this or the Epiphone Les Paul Standard??
@MorrisseyMarr95 dude i totally agree fuck that shit do what u feel mann haha
you just killed a guitar in 5o seconds well done :(
What kind of amp do you use?
who says you cant shred on a hollowbody obviously has never listened to emil wertsler
what is it for a pickup?????
0:13
does it have a name?
Made in japan or korea?
How heavy is this baby?
Thats NOT stock picups!!!! or?
dude are these stock pickups
A guitar is a guitar. There isn't a jazz guitar; or a metal guitar.
Is this Dot stock?
yeah dude, sounds horrid...because this is my first video, without pedals n effects...and the amp distortion sucks.
playing really fast =/= good
