I've gone from the A7iv and R6 ii to the S5ii. Don't need the advanced X video specs. The user experience, the menus, custom setup, af(almost on par with Sony), real time luts, Vlog, and the rest are fantastic. I prefer the Lumix out of the three. Can't go wrong with either of them but imo the S5ii is the overall best camera for hybrid shooting especially if you're into video. The S5ii(x) is Pannasonic's revolutionary Sony A7iii.
I’m actually following the same path myself lol. R6 to A7iv, back to R6, back to A7iv again, and now trying to decide between either R6 mkii or S5ii lol
@@sixsixvisuals Imo R6ii was not much of an upgrade from the R6. 4mp and unlimited hours recording. S5ii was a huge upgrade but then again the S5 wasn't that great. I really like the S5ii much more than the R6ii. R6iii will likely be pretty awesome considering whats going on these days. Canon will have to step up.
@@parmanduke see my concern is I do a LOT of photo and video equally. I prefer my canon for photo over Sony. But with video I find I never was able to get a satisfying image with my r6 (totally my fault). So I’m hoping the S5ii balances it out for me
I couldn't wait forever for Panasonic to implement phase detect auto-focus and had to go Sony. However; there is something that just feels special and comforting about using these Lumix cameras.... that makes me still want one.
That's an interesting decision, I can relate to liking the S5ii. I didn't do that because of the lens selection, the auto-focus is still quite a bit behind Sony although it's at least in a similar ballpark now. The only has a 33mp sensor vs the 24mp in the Lumix, which for me as a Hybrid shooter is helpful. But the S5ii's 6K video resolution is pretty cool. The A7IV has 7K downsampled which I thought wouldn't look as good but on side by side I like the way it looks more. However; the video formats and menu and just general friendliness of the Lumix for me still makes it tempting. @@KBmediaOnline
After 6 years of using the Panasonic G9, I finally upgraded to a full frame camera. I almost went with the Nikon Z8 or the Sony A7RV or the Canon EOS R5ii, but neither of those had every feature I needed. I could not decide which to get, until I looked at the Panasonic S5iiX. The image stabilization, autofocus, tracking and low light performance has been a dream mirrorless camera I wanted from the beginning. I took it for a field test during the day and night the last couple of days. I can confidentally enjoy photography and videography once again with very little to no frustration and concern of photos and video turning out right.
Currently rocking the original S5. It has been a bit hard for me not to hop over to the S5mII, mainly due to the increased resolution in the viewfinder and the better autofocus. But, trying to hold off until a S1 or S1r successor comes around. If it doesn't by end of Q12024, will probably just grab the S5mII.
Same situation , more a budget thing for me. THe af isnt just " better " is finally usable. So much times AF on S5 ruined some footage, despite I know I can't rely , but sometime for example in a crowd and I want to shoot someone walking on stage, and I can't have my hands on the lens (because I step up the camera using a t ripod ) over the crowd , and just af was so ... tilting. (it was with 85 lumix 1.8 ) so its a lumix lense wich are the "best" to be used with AF on s5.
Its autofocus is 95% of sony but Panasonics are known for softwareupdates which changes the cams significantly whick feels like new cam. I habe both and the autofocus is nearly the same if you know the settings.
Absolutely. And you have to keep in mind this is Panasonics first camera with phase detection so the fact that they are at least as good as Sony's A7III (3rd gen AF), is pretty good. But they did get a late start so they do have a little bit of catching up to do naturally
The color here is just perfect, there is no criticism, I just can't criticize this camera and this is compared to other flagship photo and video cameras, but if Lumix continues to surprise us with its older cameras, then it will be a brand in no competition
There are fantastic lenses from Panasonic. Sigma and Leica. If thats not enough, get an adapter and use pretty much any lens you want. I bought a Canon FD adapter for $29 and use a few vintage Canon lenses on my S5II, love it.
Definitely the prices are much lower than the competition. There are a few missing lenses in Panasonics lineup but Sigma has some amazing L mount options as well. Panasonic actually has a ton of midgrade lenses....it's the super high end pro lenses that I'm still waiting on a few. But most people will probably want these midgrade lenses with this particular camera anyway
I hate to resurrect this comment section, but I have a question. I current shoot on the Canon EOS R, but the recording limit, 4k crop, hit-or-miss AF, plus no 3rd party lenses makes me wanting to move to a new platform. I have rented the R6ii, A7iv, and the Lumix S5iix. I am still on the fence between Sony and Lumix. I do about a 70/30 split leaning towards video over photo and AF for objects (ex: pocket knives) is very important to me. My question is, if you were starting from scratch would you go Sony A7 iv or Lumix S5 iix?
It's a tough choice. In almost every way, the S5IIX is a better camera (the exception being autofocus) but Sony has more lenses, accessories, and is the easier bet in the long run since Panasonics system is newer. I fully expect Panasonic to commit to full frame, it's just that most of their current full frame cameras are gen 1 or gen 2 so they are behind. So if you don't mind taking a bit more risk and if perfect autofocus isn't crucial for what you do, I'd go Lumix
Pretty much all cameras can have moire now because they got rid of the AA filters so it is what it is. But anti-aliasing filters were on every camera 5+ years ago so we were always seeing how effective they were. But no AA filter means more light and more detail which is needed with higher resolution sensors
I'm not hearing about or experiencing this issue with the sony lineup though. But, their cine and hybrid cameras don't have as many megapixels so I assume that's why. I've heard filters can help but will interfere with the AF at least a little. @@learningcameras
@@VeganLinked right. It's the high resolution cameras where it can be an issue and most of those no longer have AA filters built in which helped control moire but also lowered the amount of detail you could get
Just picked up my S5 IIX last night. Coming from the G9, the new S5 II/X/G9 II chassis really is a step down from the original G9 in terms of build materials/quality...The battery door is straight up plastic. BUT the S5 II/X/G9 II is still a LOT of value for what you pay.
As long as your exposure is good, you shouldn't have an issue. I used filters. But remember, the autofocus system "sees" what you see so if the image is dark, what it sees is dark making it difficult to focus. Even with phase detection autofocus, I've noticed the AF algorithms on the S5II series are still very contrast dependent so if you take away contrast or light with filters, it will have more issues locking focus so things like mist filters that reduce contrast might also reduce autofocus performance
looking back at this from today and what is going in with Panasonic and UA-cam camera reviewer space, I'm getting really skeptical of videos that only sing praise of any film gear I've seen. This camera (which is in my hand right now) has somewhat good autofocus and rolling shutter *slightly* better than my a6500...nobody is talking about this in depth and that really bothers me.
So check out my S5II video from the event: ua-cam.com/video/DTPuPXGURLA/v-deo.html because this video isn't a "review". There were actually a few comments in it pointing out that my review was the only one addressing the AF issues. I was actually pretty disappointed in that trip because I was shooting alongside youtubers who were having massive AF issues and NONE of them talked about it in their videos. But I don't blame Panasonic for that...they had nothing to do with it...they gave us 100% free access to shoot whatever we wanted and say whatever we wanted. It's up to us as creators to be honest. I do think that because it was a first event for a lot of people that are just youtubers and not really "press reviewers", that skewed things a bit too much. But again, that isn't an issue with Panasonic or any other brand...obviously plenty of Apple fans with the letter "i" in their name that get invited to Apple events and put out content on the new iPhone that's skewed pro Apple which is way worse than the camera press trips
They say hybrid, but then you only have 1 usb port which you need for a gimbal. And then you dont have any ports for your ssd or powerbank. Whats the solution here since all 3 are essential for car videography?
Because it's a hybrid camera and you mentioned a setup that would require a pretty robust video camera! External power, remote operation for the gimbal, and external recording with prores to an SSD are not things most people are needing. I shoot car rollers all the time but I just use internal batteries or maybe a dummy battery to vmount, and I don't use external recording mostly because I try not to have anything attached to the camera when I'm on a moving car mount
How is the moire effect here while shooting compared to the A7IV? The S5IIX does not have an AA filter, but I don't know if the A7IV does either, as the answers to this vary.
How about the colors and organic film look? I recall back with the GH5 Matti Happoja was already talking about an annoying green tint in vlog. I’ve seen recently footage from s5 ii and it was pretty digital and kinda plastic looking.
The Lumix S5IIX does not support 4TB external SSDs. The max capacity is 2TB. If you go to the Panasonic page where the supported SSDs are listed, there are none that are 4TB. Am I missing something?
How is the autofocus on the S5IIX? I'm torn between this camera (S5IIX) and the Sony A7IV for UA-cam videos, cinematic videography client work, portraits, and wedding photography. Literally, pretty much the ONLY thing that has me even remotely interested in the Sony is the slam-dunk AF.
The S5IIX is massively improved from previous Panasonic cameras but still a step behind the A7IV which means it's more likely to make a mistake or fall off your subject. It's not bad but the A7IV is like 99.5% reliable and the S5IIX is closer to 85-90% if I were to try to give it a grade lol. But Panasonic does have way more video centric features which are especially beneficial for movie, documentary, commercial applications
@@learningcamerasThat makes sense, and is what I’m reading everywhere too… Gosh, I really wanna try to LUMIX, But I don’t wanna be missing once-in-a-lifetime candid wedding shots for clients either… The thing that gets me is the LUMIX has more AF points than even the Sony, …it seems like with some firmware tweaking, the LUMIX could be just as good if not better than the Sony… Panasonic are you listening?
@@The_Dapper_Millennial I mean it's not that surprising...Sony has been using phase detection AF in cameras for years while this is Panasonic's first. Panasonic is definitely way ahead of where Sony was in the first phase detection camera but not quite up to their latest tech. I'm sure it will improve with time and they have been very good with using firmware updates to make it even better
Thank you for this one. Love my S5ii...in combination with the sirui saturn 50. Would be cool if Panasonic adds 1.6x anamorphic mode! How ist the best mode for you for shooting anamorphic in slowmo?
I’m on the XH2S and it’s an incredible hybrid camera, but the ease of use of the S5ii and x are so much better. Especially on the video side since it’s what I’m newer to.
Good to know! I'm actually pretty sure this will be updated over time but 2TB drives are actually the sweet spot for storage/cost anyway and about 4x the storage of what V90 SD cards give you at a fraction of the cost
Great video! I got my s5iix a few months ago and It's pretty good so far. The AF struggles a bit here and there but, I'm trying to learn the flow...I'm down in Broward County, where are you in FL?
The thing that is amazing with this camera is the opengate. :) Thats what really stands out. I own the C70, R5C and R3 but still want the opengate from the s52x sometimes...
If you shoot in electronic shutter, you could see it. It's not the fastest sensor readout but it's better than the Sony A7IV for example. In mechanical shutter you won't have issues
First of all thank you for making me build this I am also considering this option 20 40 60 mm is very nice starting range but that 3.5-5.6 is the only downside… will have to always check iso and the change in dof in kit it comes to 350$ so is a deal if buget is restricted at first… that for 6k mode 24-30fps, for 4k 60 you will have 1.5 crop, so it becomes 30 60 90mm, in this mode you will need a lens 11-20mm or something like this, In my mind i always think of this full frame mm (14 24 35 50 85mm) For sony ff i have 17-28 f2.8, 28-75 f2.8 70-300 f4.5-6.3 (at 275mm it stil has 5.6f so is like 1cm dof and 2mm 100% focus) Now for lumix s5iix On the cheap side in 4k apsc mode you have sigma apsc 18-50mm f2.8 (apsc 28-75mm) 550$, Summary: Option 1: 1lens 350$ in kit f3.5-5.6 (ff 20-40-60, apsc 30 60 90mm) this will get you started only, considering the rest of accessories we need to buy) Option 2: 3 lens 1550$ (ff 6k 20-60 f3.5-5.3, apsc 4k 15-75mm F2.8 Panasonic 20-60 f3.5-5.3 (30-90mm) 350$ Sigma apsc 10-18 f2.8 (15-32mm) 650$ Sigma apsc 18-50mm f2.8 (apsc 28-75mm) 550$ Option 3: 2 lens 1800$ kit f2.8 (ff 6k 16-70mm, aps-c 4k 24-95mm) Sigma 16-28 f2.8 900$ Sigma 28-70 f2.8 900$ Option 4: 2 lens 2700$ kit f2.8 (ff 6k 14-70mm, aps-c 4k 21-95mm) Sigma 14-24 f2.8 (apsc 21-36mm) 1800$ Sigma 28-70 f2.8 (apsc 42-105mm) 900$ Option 5: 5 (3+2optional) lens 4720$ (2020$+2700$ optional) kit f1.4 (ff 6k 14-24-30-50-85, apsc 4k 21-36-45-75-127) Sigma 14mm f1.4 (apsc 21mm) 1600$ (optional) Sigma 24mm f1.4 (apsc 36mm) 950$ sigma 30mm f1.4 (apsc 45mm) 370$, sigma 50mm f1.4 (apsc 75mm) 700$ Sigma 85mm f1.4 (apsc 127mm) 1100$ (optional) Notable mention: sigma apsc 16mm f1.4 (apsc 24mm) 450$ , sigma 30mm f1.4 (apsc 45mm) 370$, panasonic 50 f1.8 (apsc 75mm) 480$ If you find them second hand in good condition is even better if you are starting out like me
Hello great video. I’am a lumix user since the gh4, gh5s. Looking to upgrade to full frame. My only concern withe S5Iix is the moire issue. Have you experienced it shooting with this camera? Thanks
I have not personally experienced it but it's not a camera issue...it's because the S5IIX no longer has an anti aliasing filter. That filter has been removed from almost all cameras 24mp and more because AA filters can have a negative effect on sharpness and detail. So it's something new to Panasonic users because they have been used to lower resolution crop sensor cameras but most high resolution full frame cameras will also have this issue if they don't have an AA filter
Hey Dan, have u perchance attempted to match video footage from the Sony FX30 with Lumix s5iiX? If so, how did it work out? If so, did it work out? Great, good, passable or terrible? 😎😎
Hey! I find Panasonic seems more neutral with colors and probably closer to Canon than Sony. I haven't tried to match them side by side but the 10bit profiles from Sony grade pretty well now so I don't think it will be too hard to get them close. Sony's previous 8bit cameras were tough to work with but the FX30 shouldn't be too hard to get close enough to the S5IIX
Thanks so much! Right now Tamron doesn't support this mount but Sigma does. Almost all of Sigma's newer lenses are created in "L mount" which is what the Panasonic full frame cameras use.
Absolutely, talking head style videos are great for this and photos are great as well. If you want to shoot the talking head videos with full autofocus on, maybe consider the Canon R6II or Sony A7IV instead but they well cost more
The biggest advantages to the S5IIX are full frame, 6k, open gate, (great for anamorphic as well), codecs like prores, , and the photo abilities. And while 4k60 in the S5IIX has a crop, the entire FX30 is a crop camera so advantage still goes to Panasonic. The FX30 has 4k120 and more reliable autofocus so depends on what's most important
@@learningcameras thank you Dan ❤️ one last question, how is the image quality compared cuz at the end of the day we rig it out and spend on accessories but what matters the most is the actual image quality. How do you compare fx30 image quality with full frame cameras like s5ii or fx3
@@raman139 I think full frame has a bigger quality impact on photos than video so for photography, I'd say there is a much larger difference between the FX30 and full frame. I also think the FX3 is simply too low resolution to be useful for photography except in emergencies. On the video side, for talking head videos, interviews, weddings, and doc style video, I think the S5II/S5IIX have features that make them absolutely amazing. For everything else, especially with higher frame rates like 60-120fps, the FX30 and FX3 are great cameras and have the bonus of having reliable enough autofocus to pretty much use for anything.
@@raman139 I mean the FX30 is a great camera so don't feel bad about it...just different sets of strengths! But the FX30 is a great camera, especially if you want those faster frame rates and autofocus
Now I have both. One with an one without the X. Each one for a different purpose. And I‘m happy with both 😊. In one point of your otherwise excellent video I have to disagree. The term „extremly well build“ blongs to the S1 and S1H in my opinion. The S5 II (X) is build really good for the pricepoint. For example the door for the cards is another level on the S1 and S1H.
Too bad that it doesnot have internal BRAW recording and global shutter or a much faster read out of the sensor. Technical is must be possible to have a readout like it isa global shutter, it only takes a smart engineer to accomplice it
So internal BRAW will require CFexpress cards so it would typically be a higher end larger body to support that...I'm thinking the S1 series will have it. Same thing with a faster sensor although I don't expect to see a global shutter anytime soon. Sony just proved it's possible but also that it doesn't have the quality and low light performance of BSI sensors yet so I'm thinking we'll see a faster scanning BSI sensor or maybe stacked CMOS but again, those sensors are typically only in way more expensive cameras so I'd be surprised to see it on a camera that costs under 3 grand. I do think the next Sony A7SIII/FX3 upgrade will have a stacked cmos sensor but not global shutter
@@learningcameras might be entering the rumor mill here, but do you anticipate the price discounts are due to an impending announcement for a new camera? i've seen the registrations and what not. the only thing holding me back from picking up the s5iix is the fear of buying one just to miss out on a new, beefier camera
@@nsmithcine I don't think the sale is related to this but I do think we'll see a new Panasonic S1 series from Panasonic which will be higher end (but also higher price) than the S5 series. No clue when but this year would seem logical for an upgrade. We'll have to see if Panasonic also announces an X version for the S1 series. With the S5II series, both cameras were announced on the same day but the X version took an extra 3+months before you could buy one so we could be well into 2025 before you can actually purchase a S1IIX anyway even if it exists
@@learningcameras that makes sense. kinda tough to drop $2k on the camera when a higher end one might be around the corner. stuck between spending and saving. wish they'd just announce something!
I've been looking at this camera for some time, it has an acceptable price for the prices I quote, however there were a lot of different opinions about the autofocus. I use a Fuji XT4, but I want to switch to something with a solid autofocus, Sony is king in this area, and with the Fuji I'm always in a hurry when I have to use it. Some projects that you develop solo I have to have something reliable in that field, is this camera really solid when it comes to autofocus, at Sony level?
Its autofocus is 95% of sony but Panasonics c are known for softwareupdates which changes the cams significantly whick feels like new cam. I habe both and the autofocus is nearly the same if you know the settings.
I'd say Panasonic is currently slightly better than Fuji (not sure why Fuji can't figure this one out) but Sony is probably the most reliable. The problem is the S5IIX is a vastly better camera than the A7IV for video especially so it's a tough choice. The S5IIX focuses extremely well...but there can be an occasional hiccup which is pretty rare on the latest Sony cameras
we, Panasonic users actually enjoyed using the manual focus since the Gh2 some 10 years ago. It was the most reliable Video machine at that time. That's what Hitchcock and co did since the 1920s'. We may continue to US MF even on this S52 & x, for the sake of being a part of the creative process. and Panasonic has all the FF lenses you will need. No good Having 10 lenses but you never use it. . We operate at higher compressions which this little power-house makes it possible on SSD. As you see, Sony, Canon and otters till don't have. I think this Panasonic with 24-105 is such a complete outfit. and for serious work just add the XLR1 and you have 4 Chanel ' No need for gimbal. Other type of ca,era users have enjoyed AF for vlogs etc. do the manual focus. has always been a leader in the industry, Not as popular as the other couple of brands that had good AF, but those of us who used man
All these extra codecs are cool and all, but i have the standard version S5ii it still shoots 6K 420 10Bit internal. It's well good enough for 99.99999999999999999 of us. Seriously it just is. My footage looks just as good as anything shot on the 'X' version. And Davinci Resolve edits my 6K natively and it runs smooth as butter on my Laptop. Hope this helps.
Great video and yes this camera is top tier...I just ordered the sirui 75mm anamorphic lens from B&H photo was on sale for $383 hope to make something great with it thanks for doing a review on this and would love to see more from you on this.
1st thing thanks for making great content glad to see you did a video on this camera,I pre ordered this camera i had just got my Z9 until this s5miix released I tried waiting for z6iii to drop but that never happen…I’m glad i waited this for the price point is so worth it I’ve watched so many videos on this camera there’s so much to get into video alone not to mention the photography side of it since the firmware update hi res handheld to get great resolution shots its overall a great hybrid cam and look forward to you putting out more on this as well.
Agreed!!! I'm surprised Nikon didn't release the Z6III last year. Obviously they had the Z8 launch so that might be why but the Z6II was a VERY minor update from the original Z6 so and obviously the Z8 is a massive step ahead so they need to filter some of that tech down the line. With full frame 4k60 and over 12fps they could blow away the A7IV in specs if they wanted
Because of GH5 I realize the S5IIX is the only camera less than $6000 that would be sensible upgrade for me. GH5: waveforms, opengate, shutter angle, preview with LUTs (heck, you can even view false color!), great IBIS, many codec options, anamorphic support Then S5IIX adds: PDAF, record to SSD, yet more codec options including 422HQ I have researched everything imaginable. FX3, XH2S, etc, and there is nothing that brings all these features to the table. Maybe the C70? Really crazy how Panasonic produces cameras like this at such prices. I will pull trigger on next S5IIX iteration or maybe go with S1H2, if either of those introduces built in ND, and has lower rolling shutter, though those features aren't nearly as important as what Panasonic already brings to the table.
I totally agree, it’s the first Panasonic camera that I’ve seen reviewed both by video centric users and photographers with good results. And it’s great in lowlight, in comparison to the Gh5 (duh 🤣), with a new high E Ibis modality (with a 1.4 crop) that is simply astonishing.
What's better in this price range? The Sony A7IV is worse and the Canon R6II might be slightly better but you lose quite a bit on the video features. The GH6 is much better thanks to the smaller sensor but I think the smaller sensor is a disadvantage with photos especially
@@DJILLEE yes that and the A7S3, both have the same, very fast FF sensor and nice slow motion capabilities. But its only a 12MP. You can't crop in without severely losing in quality and Sony IBIS is crap compared to S5II. No open gate, nor high bit rate external recording etc. So it depends what you want. For fast motion recording I'd go for A7S3 or even G9II. For everything else, the S5II is superior in every metric.
@@DJILLEE Super low resolution so not exactly a hybrid camera. To get less rolling shutter, you need less pixels or faster sensors. The S3 and E1 get around this by using low resolution sensors which makes them really not workable for most photography projects. Ideally we want fast sensors and Sony doesn't do them in anything under $6k right now. The Canon R6II is probably the fastest readout in this price range but Panasonic is probably 2nd unless you go super low resolution or MUCH further up the price to things like the Nikon Z8, Sony A9III/A1 cameras
Having shot high-speed rollers at highway speeds in full frame 6K, I don't know why people are so disheartened by it. Never bothered me once (and I'm extremely picky!) and it shouldn't be a factor unless you exclusively do whip pans or something.
*So here is the 64 million dollar question* :: _DOES THERE EXIST_ a *recommended minimum write speed* and brand name and/or model of external SSD... ? ? Also, is there an "official" list of "recommended" _proven to work_ at acceptable *good quality* , like the way Atomos has a list of SSD's for their monitor/recorder devices ? Or is any ole' SSD _good enough_ as long as it's USB-C connection type ? . . . . . . . . ANYONE GOT ANY UPDATED INFO ABOUT THIS SUBJECT . ? . ? . ? . . . . . . _THANKS_
If the Fuji XH2s was a full frame camera, it would out perform the S5ii in pretty much every category except for maybe IBIS. But even as a s35 camera, it still out performs the s5ii across many of the specs. Many of the star features on the s5ii/x popped up on the XH2s well beforehand. I’m saying that as someone that shot on Panasonic for almost 10 years all the way up to the S1H. Panasonic has been shaking up the industry for a long time, but this time, it was actually Fuji that came to the table first with the features needed to push things forward; punching WAY above its price tag.
Love the xh2s when I tried it out but ended up went the Panasonic cus of the price. In Australia we can get close to 2 s5ii bodies for the same price of 1 xh2s
I'm in the middle of watching the video right now and I immediately thought that it was the X-H2s that has the "wake-up call" specs! It's funny how many completely overlook Fujifilm... just because it is not full-frame. It is EXACTLY the positive of it being an APS-C sensor(stacked sensor, to be exact) is why it punches WAY above its weight.
True...but you lose quite a few other features on the BM and ease of use for sure. But if you need the frame rates and can't sacrifice the full frame, the BM 6k is great until Panasonic rolls out a new S1 series
Hey Dan, can I get one of them white cars as a bonus if I pick up the Lumix S5iiX? Luv how u hit it right on as to what old school filmmakers like me think about the TikTok vertical framing, but went right on a made a case for shooting in anamorphic with this cam. Very slick & very funny! Keep it up, do have any rumors to share about the supposed S1HII? 😎😎
Hahaha! I don't currently have any rumors on the S1HII but I'll throw it out there and say it should have 6k60 and 4k120 with a 24mp sensor. And if Panasonic wanted to go all out, it would be a stacked CMOS sensor with fast read speeds for very little rolling shutter. I do expect a Sony A7SIV in 2024 with a stacked cmos sensor but I highly doubt Sony will go open gate
Love your reviews, man. Always informative and always energetic. Looking forward to Panasonic's new upcoming line-up and your reviews to go along with them. I think I am going to finally make the jump from Sony to Panasonic; they have finally caught up or surpassed their market rivals. Keep up the great work.
Appreciate that! Definitely looking forward to what Panasonic has coming up....kinda surprised it took them this long to get back in the game lol but they have the ability to crush it with features like open gate, anamorphic support, rugged build, and endless video features so hopefully they throw some new cameras out soon
Thanks! I agree...I personally don't use external SSD's and Prores often for youtube but...it is nice to have just in case lol. I hear once you start shooting prores, it's tough to go back to anything else because the files are so easy to work with
two things stopping this camera to be #1 are: rolling shutter and moire. It bad idea to use it for product photography and for films (especially dynamic) or low budget ads. I have s5, even with BM Assist_12G and use it for the appropriate projects.
The rolling shutter isn't good but it's on par with other cameras in this price point. This sensor is based on the Sony A7III and the Sony A7IV has worse rolling shutter because it went higher on MP without increasing scan speeds. To get better rolling shutter, you either need fast scan speeds or low megapixels. The Canon R6II scan speeds are a little faster but you either need to go low megapixels like the A7SIII (not great for photos), or stacked CMOS which I'm hoping the S1 series which I expect to see this year will use
"Sony and Canon should be worried" , really ? - looking at the B & H Nov23 top 10 selling cameras of 2023 I can't see a single Panasonic model, plenty of Sony and Canon cameras though so I am guessly it's Panasonic who should be worried. There is a price to pay if you ignore your own customers requests to drop useless contrast detect autofocus and get a working phase detect system like everyone else uses for almost a decade. I find it amusing to see people here who can flit from one camera lens mount to another. I can only assume they have just have one or two lenses not 10's of lenses worth many times more than the camera. Sad to produce your best cameras ever only to discover your competion has moved on while you delayed IMO.
I'm sure Panasonic would love a 1 year turnaround (as would Nikon) but like you said because of lenses and ecosystem, it takes a LONG time and yes, I think Panasonic owns that failure. But now Panasonic is pretty close to playing at Sony/Canon levels with autofocus/photo and blowing them away with video so I think Canon and Sony will start feeling pressure as Panasonic expands these features to their other cameras. Especially now that Panasonic offers a decent lens lineup. Remember, this is the FIRST updated phase detection AF camera from Panasonic and the first 2nd gen full frame camera..They still need to update their entire lineup which doesn't happen overnight. Nikon also produced a winner in the Z8 so I do think the days of Sony & Canon enjoying almost no competition are about over. And I wouldn't be surprised to see DJI become a major player next year. But Sony delivered an average camera in the video department with the A7IV which is leaving room for a bit more competition
As an owner of the amazing Osmo Pocket 3 I love how everything like log, 10 bit , 120fps 4k 1" sensor phase detect and gimbal cost about £400. If they ever produce a full frame or even apsc with a similar price performance then even Sony might have to take notice. I also own a A7RV , ZV1 and A6700 - the key is lenses. Not old lenses like Pansonic M43 of which I own many but they are slow and noisy to focus but modern state of the art Gmaster and third parties. Really the game has been won by Sony. Canon sell almost twice as many cameras as Sony but Sony camera revenues are 20% more. That says everything. People are buying high end expensive cameras from Sony. It's no good getting excited about Panasonic's recent conversion to phase detect when Sony AI chip aided autofocus has just raised the bar again. It's like Panasonic are at where Sony were 5 years ago. All my current Sony's have that AI chip and not a gimick. Nikon have done well with a Sony sensor but the A9 iii is the writing on the wall. I love all the "features" of the Panasonic cameras , I love the build quality and the value for money but they are too late to the party. IMO@@learningcameras
@@ourtvchannel Panasonic is definitely playing catch up with autofocus, full frame lenses, and probably with sensor tech but that's about it. And with the massive leap in autofocus ability on the S5II they might be getting to the good enough for most people even if Sony stays in the lead. For example, none of us complained about the autofocus of the Sony A7III because it was good enough. Even though the A7IV improved autofocus, for most people, they were still happy with the A7III. Same thing applies with lenses. Sure, Sony will have more lens options but if the main lenses I need are covered, having more doesn't affect me personally. So yes, Sony is ahead in a few areas but Panasonic has serious advantages so once autofocus and lens selection are good enough, all the things that make Panasonic amazing will hold greater value
Clearly the market doesn't careless about the "Advantages" of Panasonic as demostrated in the sales of their models. Sony are not just leading in tech, lenses and customers - they are leading in revenue from cameras, over 20% more than Canon. The cinema camera rental market in the USA has seen a big move towards Sony in recent months too. Professionals are now choosing Sony over Red. Panasonic are like an athlete at the olympics who turns up at the starting line after the race has started and still expects to finish close to the leads IMO. @@learningcameras
I won't buy a Lumix full frame until they offer full frame 4k60p. I couldn't care any less about all the other stuff. Once they achieve 4k60, no crop.....Bye bye sony. Everyone will move to Lumix.
I'm sure the next S1 camera will have that. But Sony doesn't offer a hybrid camera with 4k60 no crop unless you spend $6000+ so I'm curious what Sony camera you are comparing it to
@@learningcameras When you earn $1,000 a day (minimum) as a videographer, earning the difference of the cost of the S5iiX and an FX3 will only take 2 days. 2 Days of work, and I have access to full frame 4k 60p. With great 10-bit 4:2:2 codecs, great autofocus, and great low-light ability as well, no compromises. 2 days of work, and I can afford to buy a better camera. Why would I ever choose the S5iiX over the FX3, in this scenario?
@@CTcoreytrevor The reason is easy...hybrid. The S5IIX is a vastly superior and more useful photo camera while having a few features like open-gate and 6k that even the FX3 can't match. I've been using anamorphic lenses on my last 2 big shoots and Panasonic is miles ahead when shooting this way. Sony doesn't yet make a good hybrid camera for under $6000 so while I personally use the FX3 a ton, I also need to shoot photos almost everywhere I go so I'm always bringing a 2nd body (A7RV) to be able to do that. But I'd argue that unless your in low light, the S5IIX is actually better than the FX3 in 4k24 so documentary, interviews, even youtube. It's only when you need fast frame rates or to shoot at 12,000 ISO that the FX3 has the advantage.
It does have it over hdmi so you just need to use external recording. The higher end S1H series and Gh6 series do have internal timecode I believe. They probably should have added it to the X but not many other 2000 full frame hybrid cameras have timecode
@@edjefferson9175 So Panasonic has this in the hire end more pro video cameras like the GH6 and S1 series. The S1 desperately needs an update though but I'm guessing timecode will be in the latest version as well
@@learningcameras GH6 and S1H take timecode in via the flash sync port. I believe a firmware could be written to route timecode from the audio input. Only thing keeping S5IIX from Netflix approval is lack of timecode. I assume Panasonic does this to get people to spend more money on higher level tier equipment. To differentiate Pro/Consumer products. Of course we can work around by recording timecode on an audio channel and convert after. I use Tentacle Sync and it works for me. When I submitted my footage with timecode striped on an audio channel the editor wanted nothing to do with it.They want it contained within the metadata.
Well, full frame 4k60 isn't NEEDED by everyone. And this has the advantage of being significantly better for things like interviews, wedding ceremonies, or talking head like youtube videos. It's still usable in 4k60, it's just APSC. The S5 line from Panasonic is also a lower priced line than the R6II. The S5IIX adds a little cost because of the extra codecs but Canon doesn't offer those either. But I personally use 4k60 often as well so the R6II is a great option for that...at least until Panasonic releases a new S1 body which should have FF 4k60
@@learningcameras I hear you, but the projects these types of cameras are used on slow motion is almost always needed. For tripod work cameras half this price are more than enough. Cropping for slow motion doesn’t work because your framing always changes when you switch between photo and video. I’ve tried this and it’s hell. The new S1H will be amazing for sure, but that’s another price category jump up compared to these cameras. I’m pretty sure the S5s could do 4k 60 full frame, what’s a good reason to leave it out? Haha...awesome! Appreciate that
If you Tried Sony, you would switch. Sony has the best auto focus from any camera.
@@deivytrajan Sony also doesn't have as many bells and whistles at the price point that Lumix does.
1:01 Amazing feature: 120fps FULL HD video, with no phase detect autofocus.

I couldn't wait forever for Panasonic to implement phase detect auto-focus and had to go Sony. However; there is something that just feels special and comforting about using these Lumix cameras.... that makes me still want one.
I bought an A7IV and sold it once they came out with the S5ii. I hope I never have to buy a Sony again lol

Stills is where this camera lacks but aside from cropping at higher rates and no 4k 120, it does everything a 6-8 thousand dollar video cam can
Currently rocking the original S5.
I’d say don’t wait because your wasting time in a what if. Just create with what you want to use
II and IIX on sale right now.
Can't wait for them to upgrade the AF from the G9II to the S5IIX
Can’t forget the best IBIS from any camera (aside from the iPhone…)
Definitely agree with that!
I own a s5IIx also, but my camera will only use 2 tb's. not 4 tb's. how do
you use 4 Tb ssd.
I’ve heard this as well. Would love an answer to this as well
Just hope s5 series and s1 series have the same battery, it can be a bit mess if you want to go to s1 series line if the S1H ii release.
I been with Lumix since the S1. I picked up the X a couple months ago and the features are crazy, I don't think I'll ever use them all.
Been shooting 1.5x on a project with the s5iix but the most mind blowing feature is the anamorphic specific stabilization.
The color here is just perfect, there is no criticism, I just can't criticize this camera and this is compared to other flagship photo and video cameras, but if Lumix continues to surprise us with its older cameras, then it will be a brand in no competition
please talk about the variety of lenses for Panasonic and prices!
Thank you very much for responding Dan!@@learningcameras
Why aren’t you using shutter degrees
what about moire?
BUT the S5 II/X/G9 II is still a LOT of value for what you pay.
what about losing focus with filters?
As long as your exposure is good, you shouldn't have an issue. I used filters. But remember, the autofocus system "sees" what you see so if the image is dark, what it sees is dark making it difficult to focus. Even with phase detection autofocus, I've noticed the AF algorithms on the S5II series are still very contrast dependent so if you take away contrast or light with filters, it will have more issues locking focus so things like mist filters that reduce contrast might also reduce autofocus performance
@@learningcameras Cool makes sense thanks for sharing!
looking back at this from today and what is going in with Panasonic and UA-cam camera reviewer space, I'm getting really skeptical of videos that only sing praise of any film gear I've seen.
I want to see a full breakdown of the camera 5:17
My shooting colleague used 2 A74s and I use the S52X. We use the A74 for pictures and S52X for videos

@@learningcamerasThat makes sense, and is what I’m reading everywhere too…
Gosh,

@@The_Dapper_Millennial I mean it's not that surprising...Sony has been using phase detection AF in cameras for years while this is Panasonic's first.

Im not pro videographer, just talking youtube head style and sometimes shorts. But mainly photo. S5ii is ok?
Absolutely, talking head style videos are great for this and photos are great as well. If you want to shoot the talking head videos with full autofocus on, maybe consider the Canon R6II or Sony A7IV instead but they well cost more
Hello ❤how do you compare this with fx30 as the prices are similar
@@learningcameras ❤️ thank you for replying bro , i got the fx30 for music videos and now i am thinking I should have gone for lumix s5ii
@@raman139 I mean the FX30 is a great camera so don't feel bad about it...just different sets of strengths! But the FX30 is a great camera, especially if you want those faster frame rates and autofocus
What lut pack do you use for your videos?
Just my own luts I created over the years. Haven't made them available for sale yet though...just my Lightroom presets
I'll agree with you there!
this camra screen touch ??
Absolutely
I absolutely love mine to the point that I purchased 2 more and sold my Sony's (a1x2, and a7rv)
Grabbing on of these in a few weeks
Awesome!!! It's on a CRAZY sale right now though: bhpho.to/4akJUti
You can't record to a 4 Tb drive. The S5 IIX has a 2 Tb limit.
we, Panasonic users actually enjoyed using the manual focus since the Gh2 some 10 years ago.
I think this Panasonic with 24-105 is such a complete outfit.
and for serious work just add the XLR1 and you have 4 Chanel '
No need for gimbal.
I Hope The S1H Mark 2 Is a Beast
Absolutely...they need to go all out
Great video and yes this camera is top tier...I just ordered the sirui 75mm anamorphic lens from B&H photo was on sale for $383 hope to make something great with it thanks for doing a review on this and would love to see more from you on this.
Awesome! Appreciate that. Enjoy the new rig
u got me on "you are wrong" aheuaheuhauehuae
You had a similar intro for the gh6, I love it 🔥
Thanks so much!
GH5: waveforms, opengate, shutter angle, preview with LUTs (heck, you can even view false color!), great IBIS, many codec options, anamorphic support
Then S5IIX adds: PDAF, record to SSD, yet more codec options including 422HQ
I have researched everything imaginable.
The rolling shutter is the deal breaker for me. It’s way to prevalent for me.
What's better in this price range? The Sony A7IV is worse and the Canon R6II might be slightly better but you lose quite a bit on the video features. The GH6 is much better thanks to the smaller sensor but I think the smaller sensor is a disadvantage with photos especially
@@learningcameras the Sony ZV-E1
Panasonic has been shaking up the industry for a long time, but this time, it was actually Fuji that came to the table first with the features needed to push things forward; punching WAY above its price tag.
what features did fuji come with first?
Love the xh2s when I tried it out but ended up went the Panasonic cus of the price. In Australia we can get close to 2 s5ii bodies for the same price of 1 xh2s
The XH2s is a ripoff. $2,500 for an APS-C camera lol. No wonder it doesnt sell.
H2s is up there above S5xii
I'm in the middle of watching the video right now and I immediately thought that it was the X-H2s that has the "wake-up call" specs! It's funny how many completely overlook Fujifilm... just because it is not full-frame. It is EXACTLY the positive of it being an APS-C sensor(stacked sensor, to be exact) is why it punches WAY above its weight.
I'm loving your videos.
Means a lot!!!
Sick accessories 😎
This Camera will be better than my BMPCC 6K pro, am going for it. Thanks for this Video bro 🙏🏽
Absolutely!!! Check out the sales on the kits right now too: bhpho.to/4akJUti
Insane prices
I really do like this camera 🎉
The frame rates are the reason I didn’t buy this camera I got the Blackmagic 6K FF instead.
True...but you lose quite a few other features on the BM and ease of use for sure. But if you need the frame rates and can't sacrifice the full frame, the BM 6k is great until Panasonic rolls out a new S1 series
Dan nice video but I thought you were doing the Nikon Z8. Just been waiting on that one for a while from you. Nice to see you're back 👍
It's such a great camera
Does Panasonic make their own sensors? Or is it a Sony sensor?
Sony
Panasonic uses modified Sony sensors I believe but has their own color profile
They use Sony for FF, and some super secret non-Sony sensors for MFT.
I LOVE my 2 S5iis. I’d love the S5iix, but don’t need its additional features for what I do. Love the video anyhow.
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Moire!!
No timecode. Not professional.
It does have it over hdmi so you just need to use external recording. The higher end S1H series and Gh6 series do have internal timecode I believe. They probably should have added it to the X but not many other 2000 full frame hybrid cameras have timecode
@@learningcameras Sending timecode out is useless. It needs to come in.
All of this doesn’t matter because it doesn’t have full frame video above 30p. Crazy how the Canon R6 mkii is the only true hybrid still today.
Rarely do pros shoot at 60.come on be real with yourself
Lol, I'd take my S5 ii over the R6 ii any day.
Huge miss from Panasonic.
The sensor is not fast enough to record 4k 60 without a crop otherwise it would have it. We will see if Panasonic makes a faster reading sensor.
