I’ve been a Girl Scout for 13 years, this is my last year in fact. Im not offended that your making them better, I’m delighted in fact. Their factories aren’t nut safe for several cookies that were before anymore, so for people like my brother, it’s too much of a risk to just buy our favorite cookies anymore. Im going to make these for my family eventually, they deserve these :)

    Hello Joshua,
I am French and I am sending you this message to tell you my story.
A little over a year ago, I went through a difficult breakup with my first love. To get through this mourning, I had to find something to do. So I started to cook little by little with the French recipes that can be found on the Internet. Although French food is a pillar of world gastronomy, most of the recipes found on French websites are terrible. I finally came across your channel and more precisely your buns video and I fell in love with your channel, your humor, your cooking, in short, your universe. Moreover, I learned a lot of English vocabulary in the field of cooking and now I cook almost all the time with American recipes. I would like to thank you for having allowed me to recover from a difficult ordeal, I would be eternally grateful. Your cookbook is now my bible.
    Antoine, a French fan

As an addition to the ‘but cheaper’ series I’d love to see a vid about where in the kitchen we can cut corners to bring down cost. Things like spices, proteins, sides, even things like utensils, pots, pans, knives

    • @nellgwenn
      @nellgwenn 2 роки тому +2

Get your spices at an Arabic or Indian grocery store. They are cheaper, better quality, and you get much more. I went to an Arabic grocery store about 10 years ago and bought some paprika. I still have it, and it still is potent and flavorful.
As for pots and pans, you could get seconds from a quality brand such as Allclad. Or buy a few items at a time when things are on sale. Do not over spend on non-stick cookware. Eventually the coating will come off. Take very good care of your non-stick, do not put them in the dishwasher no matter what they say. Invest in a good cast iron skillet. If you take care of it, they can last a lifetime. A good cast iron skillet or pot does a ton of work for you.
Also go to stores that sell the produce that regular grocery stores reject, they sell produce at a discount. In Arizona we have a store like that called Sprouts.
If you bake store your flour in the fridge. Less likely to have bugs. Go to thrift stores and look for pyrex and Corning ware. Go to the Dollar store to get ceramic bowls and glassware.
Look for a flour called Blue Bird. It's sold in flour sacks. When you are done using the flour you can turn the sacks into kitchen towel or towels to proof your doughs in.
If it's possible get a water softener. You cut down on the amount of soap you need to wash anything, yourself, dishes, clothes.
Go to church rummage sales to look for appliances. Usually people donate good working items to their church. My mom bought a beautiful set of Japanese dishes and bowls, service for 8 at a church rummage sale. Call up churches and ask them if they have rummage sales and Mark it in your calendar.
Also don't just go to one grocery store. Pick a route that you can easily go to 2 or stores to get the most bang for your buck.
Don't buy olive oil unless you use it on a consistent daily basis. It can go rancid.
Some stores have senior citizens day where you get an extra 10% off. Then there are sales on top of that, and coupons. It's usually the first Tuesday or Wednesday of the month. If you aren't a senior citizen go shopping with one.
Store your yeast in the freezer, along with any nuts you may buy. Nuts will go rancid. The yeast will stay viable longer if kept in the freezer. I could go on, but I'll stop there.

@@beepybopbap I actually made them for Christmas this year, they looked epic even though I only added a bow made out of one of those peel Twizzlers. I didn't add the cookie part which made it WAY too sweet. (my sister found out she couldn't eat bread anymore a bit before Christmas so I went out of my way to make her a bread-less cookies and I remembered this so I gave it a go.)
I rolled the coconut mixture in my hand and formed a ball then squished it onto a parchment lined baking pan. I poked a hole in the center with a wooden spoon to give it the wreath shape and then froze it. After it was rocked hard I dunked it into a bowl of the liquid green melts. I put it back on the parchment and added the bow while the green chocolate was still wet. It started solidifying while it was still on the pan but I still put it back in the freezer.
Anyways it's not too late to make them for some other holiday. Noone said they had to be a circle... how about a heart for Valentines or an egg for Easter. Anyways happy baking! 🙃

Hello Joshua. I decided to give your recipe a try.
I was worried about the caramel because it wasn't clear to me how you expect it to solidify. And in my case the caramel did indeed refuse to solidify, which means that instead of nice cookies, I got messy little blobs. For this reason I say: before attempting this recipe, one should be sure they can get caramel right.
Regarding taste: roasted coconut has indeed a nice flavor. I'll definitely add this idea to the list of my tricks (BTW I used a frying pan). But! The cookies have insane amounts of sugar. This makes them overly sweet. Way too sweet. The taste of sugar covers everything else.
In my opinion, this recipe is just not good, and needs further refinements. But I have learnt something, and I had a great time baking. In the future I'll try making some adjustments and baking the cookies again.
BTW thanks to you I've discovered a box of baked beans in my freezer from a month ago.

fun fact: samoas have been renamed to caramel delights. and the reason they are so expensive is because it funds girl scout camps. the troops only get 0.50 cents out of the 5 dollars

It’s great to make imitations/ improvements on Girl Scout cookies, and buy knock offs when they aren’t being sold, but I encourage everyone to remember that the cookie funds go toward running Girl Scouts, providing programs to girls, and helping troops do special activities like trips and service projects!
