Martha Stewart is the prep queen. So is Ina Garten. Coastal Grandma is very prep. That little Taylor Swift girl does prep well too. Look at the Preppy Handbook from the 80s.
I guess I view preppy somewhat differently. Reese to me is more southern classic vs. preppy. I guess my interpretation of preppy is more New England/Ralph Lauren with polos, dark blazers, khaki, boat shoes, loafer, emblems/crests. Cindy just looks very Calvin Klein modern Americana to me. Meghan as well.. more Calvin Klein, modern minimal, simple fabrics, no embellishments. I'm willing to be taught though but that's my POV.
Thanks for your comment! It might be where we live too which gives us different perspectives?? Personally, I don't see Reese's style as classic. Southern yes but to me that can feel more preppy. I can see how old-money New England vibes can also be seen as preppy but I see that as more Academia Style. I'm curious to hear your thoughts when the classic style type video comes out.
@@EricaBallStyleWASP style and prep are more closely associated than millennial minimalism. To me the style youre showing leans more towards a contemporary millennial style. Think of how much women in the 2010's loved blazers, skinny jeans, stripes. I think thats the style youre showing but more contemporary with beiges and neutrals.
I’ve watched ur vid on classic style too & am having a hard time distinguishing it from preppy? I think I’m a mixture of both but in a bit more casual way. :) thanks for this great series Erica!!
Thanks for your comment Pina! It can be a very subtle difference between the two style types. Sometimes it's the difference in fabric choices, silhouettes, or the way pieces are styled that make the difference.
Love this explanation. I have been trying to figure out my style and also how boho fit in my style and elements. I love flared pants but fitted on top portion. I love a small dose of fringe and flared arms on a shirt. I always called it my hippie look but now I’m 60 and still love a piece of this style but I like to have fitted elements to show my shape and I’ve grown to love a blazer whether, more so for a casual look. I love the sandals but I don’t really wear that style anymore because I’m older. I don’t wear many floppy hats. I I have always loved earth tones but I thought maybe that was minimalist. I have loved this series and I think I have narrowed down somewhat to Classic, slightly edginess with a touch of boho. 😄
Thanks Tana! I'm glad this series helped you get a clearer picture of your style. I love how you combine all the elements to what feels authentic for you ❤
Good timing!!! I put on a Ralph Lauren vintage cable knit sweater and my Bass penny loafers today. Haven’t worn either in awhile!!!! I was thinking - I feel preppy today and I like it!!!! I love navy and pink. I wear pink a lot!!!! 😊
@@mercedes523 I never had Bass when I was younger…. Bass was a luxury!!! I totally get it!!!! My loafers are probably 20 years old. I had them resoled about 2 years ago. 🙂🙂🙂
Boston girl here chiming in....I was raised on preppy/Academia style! These examples are more Cali girl interpretations. Ali MacGraw in "Love Story " and Martha Stewart would be my examples. The style leans more cardigans than Blazers as the extra layer. Luv this series and your excellent interpretation of different styles types
@littlelady7843 and it was East Coastal Grandma in the summer from Cape Cod to Bar Harbor. No neutrals...heavy on the gingham check, madras plaid and seersucker...lol
Love this interpretation Christine! I think that's spot on. I see Academia and Preppy style types as different, but I think it does depend on where you live. How amazing was Ali MacGraw in Love Story though!
@@EricaBallStyle I liked Jackie Bisset Kennedy's style, and Kathryn Hepburn, but I am petite (but slim). It's hard for me to find a way to get the same asthetic.

Hi Erica, I would love you to do a series on fashion icons past and present, Jane Birkin, Anita Pallenberg, Jackie O, Ali McGraw, Victoria Beckham, also modern Parisian style/chic, glamorous grandmas, etc.
I lover preppy style . But I am more gravitated to Tyler Swift's preppy , girly style. Lots of preppy style skirts, dresses, sweaters.....The examples you used are quite representative. But I was a little surprised by Megan Markle. She doesn't give me a preppy vibe. Her style is more masculine and modern in my impression.
Thanks for your comment! Taylor is a great preppy style type. I used her in my What's Your Style video but wanted to show some other examples too. I see Megan as a preppy meets classic style but it also depends on which outfit you're looking at 😉
Great video series. I was hoping maybe you could help me. I was a pair of boots, 5 to 6 inch shank, low heel and soft leather. Little to no heel. I guess I would call a. Feminine army, edge but soft fit. Any brands come to mind. Thanks.
This is not preppy... Slim jeans/skinny jeans is a travesty for this style imo. I feel like the women's version looks almost exactly the same as the men's but with different cuts and with dresses, skirts, and heels. If I find examples I'll leave them, but like other people here have said who live in the northern parts of America, this is not really classic preppy at all. Maybe a modern take.
@@бронза.вафля.конус People have different ideas about preppy depending on where you live. I grew up on the east coast when penny loafers were in. But after styling women for 17 years and living in Los Angeles, this feels like a modern preppy style to me.

Classic. This is accurate.
I think the video is focusing more on silhouettes rather than typical preppy prints, colours, etc. I

Andrea, I remember Bass loafers. I had a pair in High School and I absolutely loved them. It was quite a sacrifice for my Mom because of the price.

I can relate to this. Preppy is hand in hand with academia for me. I loved Ali MacGraw's style in love story.

I consider Levi’s, light pink button down collar and loafers preppy. Also, anything monogrammed.
I love this new series! I can't wait to see more styles!
Thanks so much Sylvia! 😊
So excited to see you cover other aesthetics!

OK I thought I was more classic, but I def have a lot of preppy going on,

Thanks Cheryl! Try Sam Edelman. They are great quality and price point and have some cool styles.
If there was ever a style where jeans are not even on the table, it’s preppy.
Whose style do I admire?
Maleficent
So "Preppy' is "French Chic"?
Taylor Swift is preppy and fun. Got disappointed to see Reese and Meghan here, they make preppy super cliche and boring.
I’m from the east coast, I don’t agree with this version at all 👀 and Meghan Markle ???? 😂😂 please!
