Eco vs Standard mode does it effect MPGs - Ford Bronco Badlands Sasquatch

  • Today we are testing the 2021 Ford Bronco Badlands fuel economy.
    Dave and Kelly wanted to know if the Eco mode made a difference in the Bronco's miles per gallon vs the Normal mode. Using the channels 40.3 mile loop they set out keeping as close to the listed speed limits as possible.
    The Ford Bronco isnt built to be a leader in the MPG game but we were surprised with the results.

    I have a 2024 Bronco Sport Badlands with the 2.0L engine. I live in the city, and I prefer eco mode because the gas pedal is a bit less sensitive for a smoother take off from frequent stops. I think the only other benefit is when the a/c is running it limits how much the compressor is used. Even in eco mode, it still downshifts quickly when needed. Of course, I disable the auto stop/start feature which is maddening in city driving.

    I just did the same test, driving to down state Michigan in my 2dr sasquatch. i drove a little over 200 miles in eco mode and the trip back in normal mode. At 76 mph on cruise. And only got 16.4 mph both ways.

    Great content as always. I'm blown away and impressed. Lots of hills and winter here so 15.1mpg on the Sasquatch...oh and my heavy foot. It's 15.1mpg but I'm having a blast!. On 34 inch Badlands gas is not thst much better. Both are 2.7l v6 with heavy foot average speed 35mpg

    Thanks for the video and overall content. In my personal experience, the eco. vs. normal vs. sport doesn't seem to have a large spread in difference with fuel consumption (if any at all), but for me, it's more about driving feel. Specifically, responsiveness to throttle, shift points and all around "smoothness" of how the vehicle behaves to throttle input. Coming from a larger more boat like Expedition I found that the sport mode is a bit jerky but still fun between stop lights and I tend to default to the eco mode for overall smoothness for me and my passengers. Enjoy the day!

    How about 80 miles in Sport mode (that 4A will tax your mileage). My 2DR 2.7 will get up and go. Drafting behind a semi and at 70 MPH I can get close to 20 MPG (in Normal). Someone told me that Eco mode is best for city driving.

    Wouldn't the interstate be a better test? Mines new, 600ish miles, and ive seen 21 on the computer, i haven't checked it yet in math, miles divided by gallons. With a lot of start and stop, 18. But idling can change that drastically. Its not the most aerodynamic vehicle either so a head wind can effect mileage.

    Hey Dave love your videos been watching them ever since I placed my order for a Bronco back in February last year. Just picked up my Bronco about a week and a half ago it's a badlands with Sasquatch cactus Gray. Have a topic you may want to touch on. There's a pretty major issue with having a light bar mounted on the roof with a soft top. If you do not have the light bar mounted high enough it causes an effect called the von karman effect which creates a cyclone on top of the roof and causes the roof to flap violently. Check it out there's some threads on Bronco 6G just thought it might be something you're interested in I've tried many different brackets evidently the only bracket that will work is from Ford which puts the light bar almost 8 in above the roof which looks kind of ridiculous.

      Thank you for watching the channel! Yep Ive been watching people take issue with the way the lightbar disrupts the air across the soft tops. I will write this down and see what we can do to discuss it - drb

    In ECO mode, is there cylinder deactivation involved, or is it just throttle response? I ask because cylinder deactivation will prematurely wear out the engine due to uneven heat distribution.

I'm averaging 17.7mpg every time I do the drive from Austin TX to Sunrise Beach TX which is a decent hour long drive with a steady 65mph cruise control for most of the way.

  • @craiglamb9029
    @craiglamb9029 Рік тому

    65-70mph on the highway is where it's at for jeeps, broncos, fj cruisers, boxy off road vehicle that have larger tires, bigger engine and/or are just aerodynamically disadvantaged.
    Anything over 65-70mph, and fuel economy just drops off a cliff. The extra air pressure at higher speeds really takes a toll on the high drag coefficients, increased mass and higher frictional drag and mass of the bigger tires, of these vehicles.
    Slow it down and you'll save alot of fuel in these vehicles.
    Save the speed for if you really need to get somewhere or you just want to have a lil fun. 65-70mph everywhere else. Lol

  • @TugHillGuy
    @TugHillGuy 2 роки тому

    Just curious, did you cross-check the computer's numbers by dividing miles traveled by gallons used? 21+ mpg is great for a Sasquatch Badlands, imo! That's probably the heaviest configuration you can get in a regular Bronco. This has me wondering what kind of mileage the Bronco Raptor will get. It is heavier still and comes with 37s and the 3L twin-turbo V6.

    • @AllTerrainNation
      @AllTerrainNation  2 роки тому +1

      We did not do the math on this one. The point here was more showing if the ECO made a difference vs standard mode. The MPGs were gained by keeping the Bronco under 60 mph during the trip. For our test the trip computer worked. We have a MPG test driving to Florida and back to Nashville
