I am a practicing Catholic and this most BEAUTIFUL Hymn only serves to strengthen my Faith even more. Wish they would sing this Hymn more at my Parish. Brings one closer to God.
This hymn is so very beautiful, we sang it at mass last sunday, and I thought I was in heaven itself. I was converted to the Catholic Faith when the Pope came to the UK in 2010. I thought His Holiness was like an angel filled with light !
One of the most beautiful hymns ever written. Whatever you believe regarding the literalism of the Eucharist, regarding the spiritual elevation it's consummation brings, Jesus is the fount of life. Personally, and it took a long time, I do believe we eat His body and drink His blood during Holy Communion. I'm not a conservative Catholic, in the sense that I don't follow dogma rigidly. I'm gay, but I know that He loves me and wants to give me life abundantly. He lost many disciples (see John's Gospel) when he gave the message of the Eucharist, but he spoke shockingly, unequivocally, and didn't flinch. He wants to give of Himself to feed and nurture all of us.
I LOVE THIS HYMN BECAUSE IT SUMS UP MY TRUE BELIEF IN JESUS AS MY LORD AND MY GOD (JOHN 1:1 AND JOHN 20;28) WHO GIVES HIMSELF TO ME HOLY COMMUNION AS MY DIVINE FOOD AND DRINK (JOHN 6).
All the words of Jesus are eternal and infallible truth. God is the Father of all lawful desires. Marriage belongs to the Father. No one steals from God.
Bless this place O Christ we pray and open here a door that no one can shut and grant that soon there will be one Church and one fold and one Shepherd.
At Oxborough Hall today this hymn was one of the hymns we sang in procession around the beautiful grounds bearing the Blessed Sacrament, I really love this !!!
I would love to attend mass at Westminster one day, as it looks very beautiful, this particular mass was with our last Pope Benedict, but I am sure Pope FRancis would love this hymn !

We normally sing "Faith of Our Fathers" to this tune.
I believe the tune was originally composed for this hymn, but yeah, somehow Faith of Our Fathers began to be sung to this tune.

St.Alfonso Maria De Liguori was the only one how was able to write this mercilessly !

what always amazes me is the number of clergy who don't sing......sad.
Remember that these clergy are British. British Catholics don't sing.
