This story had a bit of misfortune during production after director Douglas Camfield had a minor heart attack. Producer Barry Letts directed parts 3 to 7 uncredited. Olaf was the third actually. The first was an extra named Lewis Alexander who was an army officer in The War Machines and later appeared in a Tom Baker story. He lived 1910-2010. Then Zohra Sehgal who was in Marco Polo and The Crusade lived to be 102 (1912-2014).
The current oldest living actor is a man named Arnold Yarrow who appears in a later Pertwee story. He will turn 101 on 17th April.

I'm glad you enjoyed these first two parts so much. I was interested to see what you would think of them, considering they do initially seem to set this story up as a typical 'base under siege' story with a stubborn leader. Although, I think they do a pretty good job of making Stahlman's actions feel believable.
Sutton (the expert that was brought in) says at one point that if the drill was stopped it would seize up because of the depth it was at. The whole project would have to be abandoned. It's also established that Stahlman has been working on the project his whole life, so as frustrating as his behaviour is, it's also somewhat understandable why he does the things he does. Also, the only reason why things start going wrong with the drill is because one of the Primords (the people infected by the green slime) raised the nuclear power too high. Nothing to do with the actual drilling project, or so everyone thinks. There's not enough evidence to connect the green slime to the murders and sabotage, primarily because it's too hot for anyone to analyse.
Still, I know you think this type of story has been done a bit too much in recent seasons, so I'm glad that didn't prevent you from getting into this one. It's got enough interesting things going on outside of those familiar story elements to be still be very interesting. I will say, if you liked these first two parts this much, you should adore the rest of this story. It goes to a completely new level.

A couple of important firsts in this story; it's the first time this Doctor is seen with the Sonic Screwdriver, before anyone comes at me it's confirmed as such in the novelisation...more on that later. Also the creepy music for this week, you mentioned; that's actually a piece of stock music composed by non other than Deila Derbyshire, the talent behind orchestrating our genius theme tune. As she never was commissioned to write any other music for the show, this is the closest we get to a Delia Derbyshire scored Dr Who story.
Despite that piece being used only sparingly it doesn't matter casue there's continuous rumblings from the drilling machinery, always making it's presence felt in the control room scenes.
Elsewhere our disgruntled scientist for this story is behaving particularly badly. Trying to rationalise it in my head I reasoned that Stahlman must have come up against so many people who refused to believe his theories and research. Thus by this point, where he's close to his final aim he's been pushed back so many times, he's completely scathing of any criticism of him. In turn he's provoked an equally hostile response for the Doctor. Despite his cheery entrance, singing away, this has to be the angriest and most combative we've seen this Doctor thus far. Everytime those two are together they try and score point off each other.
The phrase "The Brigadier's hype woman" cracked me up, SO MUCH. Someone needs to get you a badge or a t-shirt with that, asap!!
So we started with the Sonic and we're ending with the Sonic. This is something a friend of mine pointed out about 2 years ago. Liz can't get out without the Doctor opening the doors with the Sonic...but when she comes back in...she's got one. I can't tell you HOW IMPORTANT it is that we know more about this. Dr Liz Shaw, not only an eminent scientist with almost every degree going but she can build her own Sonic Screwdriver, now that's some achievement.

The premise of the story seems to have come from an article the suddenly beleaguered Barry Letts read in a magazine - possibly 'Scientific American' - about two separate attempts to drill through the Earth's crust, conducted individually by the USA and the USSR; both of which were suddenly halted. Doctor Who's descent (if you'll pardon the expression) into scientific apocalypses did not occur in isolation, with Cybermen-creators Kit Pedlar and Gerry Davis already ploughing a similar furrow with their own BBC series 'Doomwatch'.

It's also at this time that, in addition to the Third Doctor, we see representations of Lethbridge Stewart, UNIT and Liz Shaw for a brief period in the TV Comic strip version of Doctor Who, drawn by John Canning. As opposed to future artists, Canning's style was more of a caricature and the presentation of Nicholas Courtney didn't really achieve a likeness, nor really that of Caroline John. His Jon Pertwee, though, was recognizable. It was something to look forward to on a Monday morning and, needless to say, were completely different continuities from the programme on Saturdays, though still, as with the series, stuck on Earth. I don't recall any of the background being offered up in the stories or even mention of the exile. The stories' format were a couple of black and white pages in the rear of the comic and the stories usually ran for roughly a couple of months. There were also Holiday - Summer - Specials to look forward to and annuals at Christmas.

This is one of my favourite Jon Petwee story's perhaps top 3 it's very disturbing and gives the regular cast to be totally different, hope you enjoy it.Yes you definitely could be the Brigadier's second always with him.

Can I imagine being stuck like that for eternity?
Well I've listened to some of 8s audio dramas, so yes.

This is one of the all time greats of Dr Who, and possibly the best 3rd Doctor. You’ll love it - it gives even better in the next few episodes
It adds to the tension that they all have to yell over the drill. Brilliant stuff

I rewatched this story recently, while I still think it suffers from being a little too stretched thin over it's 7 episode runtime, it's still a classic story of Pertwee's era.

I can't explain why, but when Sesska swears, it's the Best Swearing Ever!! Love the idea of her being the Brigadier's Angry Voice, like that Key and Peele "Obama's Angry Voice"!
Brig: "I need you to listen!"
Sesska: "Shut the F*** Up, Bitch!"

This was the first Classic Who I ever watched , and I made the mistake of trying to watch it all in one day, but roughly halved in two sittings. It was not a fun experience! I wasn't ready for Classic Who pacing. Fortunately, it did not deter me from the Classic Series. I enjoy it so much more nowadays.

I am glad you have found your place in the Doctor Who universe. Sesska, The Brigadier's Hype Woman. ;-) . Better than mine, I liked the idea being the Doctor... But after regeneration I would spend much of my first episode complaining about being the first ever Fat Doctor.

It's amazing reading through these comments just how many people are saying that, and it's mine too! When I first watched this on Video in the early 90's, I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. Waited a long time to see Jess react to this!
