Months in the making, with 14 different sets all well-suited for smashing monster heads, this Build a Better Hunter details key changes introduced to the Hammer and the general skill system in Monster Hunter Rise, and gives a primer for those seeking to take their bonk game to even greater heights. Literally.
Important to note, since talismans are RNG-heavy, edit your own personal sets based off of the good talismans you currently have. I used this tool to create my own, as I could maximize skills based off of what talismans I inputted to the database: mhrise.wiki-db.com/sim/?hl=en . On many builds, consider subbing out one of the levels of masters touch or even attack boost for a level of Wirebug Whisperer. Any extra time you can add to your third wirebug means more Impact Craters for all. If you can comfortably reach Wirebug Whisperer level 3, you'll also get a 20% cooldown time reduction on silkbind attacks. Up to you!
Before anyone asks, I did not include a Dragonheart-focused set in this video for three reasons. For one, Dragonheart sets are easy to make, as you just use either 4- or 5-piece Valstrax depending on what Talisman you have, so feel free to go for it with Nargacuga's hammer (Tigrex is a possibility as well with enough affinity). Secondly, I don't enjoy a Dragonheart playstyle on Hammer because it relies on taking damage, either 30% if running 4-piece Valstrax or 20% of total health if going for the full set. Finally, Dragonheart in multiplayer is always a mess because of hunting horns that heal you, hunters running wide-range/support sets, or any Palico that sports healing moves. Dragonheart will have its place in my next video, however!
All gameplay captured on a Nintendo Switch mostly with the Elgato 4K60S+. The super-smooth sections you may notice are slow-mo clips sped up to display at full-speed.
In-game graphical/soundtrack assets used are all from the Monster Hunter Rise game published by Capcom.

Appreciate it! And yeah I try to leave the builds up for about 5-6 seconds total. It worked better in my Iceborne vids because there was only one build per set. But since in Rise I need to make a basic build + a loaded build for each set, I’m a bit more limited. Next video I’ll try to have each build up for a couple seconds longer for easier pausing (if I go too long though it messes up the pacing of the action, so I’ll experiment).

If you are on Sunbreak, definitely get that skill that makes your palico use their support moves more often, I forget the name of the skill though. Otherwise just stick a good paralysis or sleep weapon on them with the status attack up skill to get a proc or two of those helpful statuses on a hunt.

Love the video! Awesome builds! But I have a quick question how come you don’t use sleep or paralysis gems for the sleep/paralysis build?
Great question! Unlike poison and blast options, there are no hammers in high rank that balance good damage with good status for para and sleep. Volvidon’s hammer has good para, but awful damage potential. Somnacanth’s hammer is the same way. Iron Devil Soul is a decent option if you can max out bludgeoner or handicraft, but it still kind of disappointing.
By focusing more for damage on the para and sleep builds using the rampage hammers, you basically are running a raw build with about 3-4 procs of para and sleep per hunt solo, and maybe a couple in multiplayer as well. Since the para and sleep gems are level-2 in this game, it takes away too much from other valuable skills like attack boost.

Much appreciated. Anything is possible once I get a gaming PC in 2022, with news of Rise Sunbreak launching side-by-side the Switch version. In that lead-up time I do want to have some fun with Iceborne again, and will be doing some modded shenanigans with that. If I can jive with Dual Blades I may do a guide!

It damages more than ACS when used properly, but almost no one uses it because you get zero i-frames or superarmor, and uses 2 wirebugs too. That said, when it works it is a ton of fun and functions a lot like aerial style GS in MHGU!

Xbox, PS, and PC Gamepass players alike: Welcome to Kamura. We have giant bonk sticks and can FLY. All these builds still work damn well too. I personally wouldn't run elemental hammer until you all get Sunbreak with the massive buffs Courage style received, it was nowhere near worth running before the DLC dropped.
It's come to my attention that PS and Microsoft players inherited the TU3 balance changes, so I stand corrected: Run wild! Run Courage sets! And remember: CRUSH EVERY SKULL YOU SEE!

Currently I've been using the rampage meme build. (Bludgeoner/high raw but -30 affinity)
Tali: Attack boost 3 and Agitator 1 with 1 level slot.
Right now my build is:

Slugger 2
Windproof 2

Appreciate it! Yeah I wish bludgeoner was balanced better, it could have made Atlas Hammer builds viable. Sadly even at lvl 3 the boost isn’t enough to counter blue sharpness. Looks like a good anti-Rathian build you have there, though!

Appreciate it! I don’t have a combo video, though I think there are already a few good ones out there. The three combos I lean heavily on for damage, though:
-large opening: spinning bludgeon->upswing->big bang III->Big Bang finisher
-silkbind spinning bludgeon->overhead smash->upswing
->(if near KO/stagger threshold) blue-charged brutal upswing->charge switch->impact crater
I myself use full Valstrax with Valstrax soul on weapon. Combined with my Critical Eye 3, 1 slot Talisman. I end up with DragonHeart 5, Critical Eye 4, Resentment 3, Resuscitate 3, Critical Boost 3, Weakness Exploit 3, Stun Resistance 3, Critical Element 2, and Flinch Free 1
With my Fight Type Palico boosting my crit rate to 100% on weak points, healing bubbles, extra wirebug, self heal, and "Furr-ious" self buff. She paralyzes the enemy with her goth jelly umbrella too. Skills are Status attack up, critical up (s), and Omniresistance
I eat for defence, slugger, and whatever resistance is appropriate. A whetfish reduces my sharpen time when needed.
I *almost* put together a Valstrax set for this video, because Dragonheart really is a unique playstyle, and is the ticket to the highest overall damage you can get in the game, assuming you are good at keeping DH active. The kicker for me is the need to be taking damage for it to activate and (hopefully) not have teammates or palicos healing you out of it. That, and needing to purposely tank hits doesn't jive with how I play. For solo play in a controlled environment, DH is definitely king!
Valstrax Soul probably makes the Rath family and Ibushi/Narwa just melt, though. For the next video, DH on the Great Sword will be great especially for a rage-slash playstyle. Since a large part of the gameplay loop of GS is shoulder-tackling, adamant-charge-slashing, or rage-slashing through attacks, it's a cinch to keep DH active even in multiplayer.
I'm surprised on your build you chose to go for critical element 2 instead of a couple levels of attack boost, have you experimented with either to see which is best? I know if there's a way you can reach AB4, it would definitely be tops.
@@Matadurr DragonHeart I view as primarily defensive. I rarely dance around with my health very low and because of that I can afford to be very aggressive, especially with the wirebug forward strike that makes you immune to knock back. There's definitely more DPS heavy options, but this one is imo reliable and comfy. Frankly the attack boost change would probably be better for me in the long run, but I love those occasional giant numbers.
Edit: Not sure how the math works out exactly, with Valstrax Soul and everything. The numbers are big though.
@@Abyssal86 Oh, dash breaker? Yeah that would combo well with Valstrax armor due to the high defense.
And yeah from what I gather on the meta sub, Dragonheart 5 piece (or 4-piece plus a god-tier AB3/WE2 talisman) are far and away the highest damage potential in a real hunt. Peak Performance beats it a bit, but is difficult to maintain due to no health regen. Heroics/adrenaline is even zanier, but is next to impossible to pull off outside of a speedrun.
The Valstrax Soul stuff I'll test on GS. Though GS leans even more heavily towards raw, so it will probably be ineffective by comparison to something like the Tigrex GS or Rampage.

Wirebug whisperer and silkbind boost with the tigrex hammer. You have to give up spinning move for that other move I'm too lazy to look up, but you can literally spam the level 3 charge so long as you're holding the charge button after connecting
I’m going to change the description later, for some reason wirebug whisperer completely evaded me when putting these builds together. It’s usefulness on the tigrex builds only really counts if hunters a) Exactly know openings to spam impact crater and b) Are matched up with a non-frantic monster. Lvl 1 can be good, and lvl 3 also cuts down wirebug cooldown time, so I could see it taking the place of a level of master’s touch!

@@J_just_J_yes in fact what I did to get better at this demo fight was to watch some of the top speed runners and adapt their tech. Saved me so much time and made the hunt fun!

Thanks! Yeah I edited the rampage theme in a few different spots to better sync up with the events of the intro. Just some crossfading to different sections of the song. Next video should be out soon! Just finishing up some polish and getting the teaser clips ready.

Great vid. Can I ask how you got such smooth slow motion at the start? MHR on switch runs at 30 FPS, right? Your video looked way smoother than that. Thanks.
I was using soft mods on the Switch for the opening sequence while offline that unlocked the frame rate, ran the game at .25x speed, and overclocked the system’s processor. So effectively this gave around 180 frames per second when edited to real-time speed. This gives a lot of room for slow-mo edits. I’m on PC now, running at 4k/60fps. If I can find a mod that simply slows the game world down for me to .25x speed, I’ll now effectively have 240fps to work with for my next video.

Hey! Check out all the happenings with my channel and life in general in my discord. In short, I finally have gotten back into recording content for Rise. Yesterday I spent the time getting used to the controls again. The hope is to get the GS video of the series out around New Years!
MHR is a great game overall. More arcade-y than World/Iceborne, but the mechanics of combat are a little smoother. Recent event quests like the Apex Emergency quests are giving us a taste of Master Rank difficulty. I look forward to Sunbreak! I should have my PC built by Rise’s PC launch, so I’ll be starting fresh there soon.
How do you put the Silkbind boost in the Tigrex Hammer?
It’s from the ore tree before you branch off to the tigrex hammer.
My biggest complaint about rise hammer is how the strength upswing combo has a very wanky hitbox that can only hit the head if you wiff your entire combo otherwise.
Also I believe courage has raw damage multi hits, it does attack more on average making it feel better for elements/status, but the difference isn't that big. I do find that it offers more consistent chunky hits and I find it can flinch more reliability.
Yeah working around the hitboxes can get weird. Thankfully in Sunbreak Courage hammer is super strong with element
How did you get 95 affinity on the tigers build? I have the drum and the roar but only get to 40
Make sure you are taking weakness exploit into account. If you’re bonking the head, which is almost always considered a weak spot for hammer, you’ll get an extra 50% affinity on that attack. So assuming other buffs are active like rousing roar, you will hit 90% affinity on the PP set and 100% affinity on the normal Tigrex set.
TLDR: Your stats menu isn't 100% accurate and only takes baseline stats and buffs into account. Skills like Weakness Exploit aren't accounted for in your stats menu.

I mean that hammer strike that seems to cancel attacks and damage.
It’s called water strike, it’s one of the switch skills you can unlock that replaces the side smash (how you normally begin a Big Bang Combo). For almost all intents and purposes it is a strict upgrade compared to side smash.

I've been using the hammer for about a week and a half. I use the narga hammer, but just got the Tigrex hammer. It may be my build, but it seems like nargas hammer is stronger. Which sucks cuz I just spent 56k. Anyways, it's good to have. However, my question is, why does no one use the rajang hammer?I just layed eyes on it when buying my Tigrex hammer, and noticed it has more base damage, less negative affinity, and thunder elemental damage. The only down side is the green sharpness, but with bludgeoner on lvl 3, wouldn't that be the best, or am I missing something?
Tigrex hammer only comes out on top if you have silkbind boost on it and can successfully counter the negative affinity (max crit eye plus rousing roar helps). Rajang hammer falls short because the damage multiplier granted from bludgeoner 3 *still* doesn’t let it beat blue sharpness, let alone white sharpness.
Bludgeoner in its current form is kind of a trap, much like handicraft. I wish it wasn’t that way but in the game’s current form there are lots of weapons/skill combos that don’t work as well as they should.

Recently got a Slugger 2 Free Meal 2 with 2 level 2 slots talisman 💀
That’s a pretty good one! Especially to help you save some potions over the course of a hunt. In your case, it would be worth putting in another level of slugger AND eating for felyne slugger. You’ll probably get 2 extra KOs per hunt solo, probably an extra KO in 4p hunts.
How do you chain so many hammer hits together?
Any time you end a spinning bludgeon with an upswing you can immediately follow it up with hits in the big bang combo cycle. Where you end the spin determines at what point you begin the cycle.

Great Sword’s will be pretty concise, because with the relative uselessness of critical element in Rise...there’s only a few decent raw GS’s, and a few that are ok for status. I plan on a minimum of four total at the moment. I hope to work HH back in, but the weapon just feels wrong to me in Rise. SnS/Lance are also contenders.

How to have this magnamalo armor style plz
On Switch, you just need the Magnamalo amiibo or a friend that does (they can even log in with your save data and do it remotely). On PC…well….I’m still trying to find someone to mod it in. The best news I have is that the armor IS in the PC version, but you cannot load it in with normal means, and it is stuck at the Switch’s resolution.
Hey man, dont know if you still se comments but how in the world does your game looks so sharp and smooth? I play on switch and it looks REALLY bad and I dont know how to fix it
So for my GS and Hammer vids I used Switch, but ran some soft mods that unlocked the frame rate and overclocked the GPU/CPU. It enabled me to get around 60fps in some areas, though it averages to about 45fps. For parts of the intro, I also used optical flow in my editing program to smooth out particularly choppy parts.
My recent HBG video is all on PC, thankfully.
