    Mine is about 2/3 years old all of sudden just stopped and the yellow circle. I am noticing some white chalky stuff

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching. The yellow light indicates that your system has begun to perform a self-cleaning cycle and will not allow any interference…unless unplugged.
      We recommend allowing the system to fully perform the cleaning cycle and remove any and all contaminates that it wants out…such as the chalky residue.

    So here's my experience with this trash product. I feel compelled to warn people. My son purchased me one as a gift (boy did he regret that). It showed up USED (now I know why, it was refurbished). He contacted Amazon and strangely, they immediately said "just keep it, we'll send a new one". They knew it was refurbished IMO!!! They sent me a new one. After about one week, it started making this LOUD squealing noise. I read up on it and did the vinegar rinse, cleaned and cleaned (about every three days) and still it produced very little ice and squealed so loud everyone in my house was mad. SO, my poor son got in touch with GE and they said "well, we'll send you a refurbished one" but you have to box up the defective one (so they can pawn it off on the next unsuspecting victim), and let me tell you the boxing up process was a nightmare as this thing is HEAVY and was like fitting a very heavy jigsaw puzzle together. I raised all kinds of hell because I didn't want a refurbished unit, my son spent $600 on a NEW one. So GE said "we'll make an exception this time and send you a new one"... like they were doing me some huge favor. So fast-forward to this last new one they sent - SAME PROBLEM, VERY LITTLE ICE AND A VERY LOUD SQUEALING NOISE. I GIVE UP AND I HOPE GE GOES OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!

    How often should we clean our opal? Once a month, once every 2 weeks? And do we have to use vinegar in the cleaning cycle or will plain water work for cleaning cycle? thanks.

      Thanks for watching & sharing your question. We have always followed the manufacturers recommended guide.
      Our guide recommends cleaning at least once a week to keep your machine making fresh ice. It states to use 5 cups water, 1 tsp household bleach.

    Hi! I have a question I purchased a used one, I know horrible idea. 😂 but I plugged it in and did the cleaning process, and tried making ice later, I had it on for twenty minutes, and it made some ice (not very much) so I just let it keep going and then I checked twenty minutes later and the ice was melting and and no new ice was made, so I let it continue for about another 30 minutes and I noticed a steady stream in the back, behind the ice bucket. It also started making a very loud ringing noise. So I’ve kept it turned off. Hoping to find some answers, if my only option is to buy a new one I will 🥲

    I have had my Opal ice maker for over a year. A month ago I noticed blackish spots on my ice. Did the 18 hour cleaning on it then started it back up. Worked great, but after a few days had to clean again... black ice was back. Now I have to clean several times a week. We have well water, so no additives to the water. Any suggestions?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching & a few things can cause this.
      1. Worn out parts...which shouldn’t be the case because it’s only a year old...
      2. Hard water... lots of solids inside water and when frozen, they are very noticeable.
      3. Mold inside machine... which you mentioned you did a thorough cleaning so this should not really be the issue.
      4. Plastic shaving inside ice... ice machines are hard-working machines and overtime, the internal parts can begin degrading and shedding plastic. If this is the case for you, we recommend putting in a call to the manufacturer & discussing replacement options... hopefully they will honor a friendly swap.

    Thanks to prime day, i just picked up an Opal unit. Appreciate the videos and all the answers you have provided. Quick question - do you let your unit run all the time and just add water when needed? Or, do you cycle it on and off when you need more ice made. I noticed my unit puts off a lot of heat on the right side and is a bit noisy when running. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

      Thanks for your concern :) This all happened yesterday. Got home, and there was no ice despite being on all day. I spent hours cleaning and troubleshooting. When I woke up this morning, there was half a bin of ice! I suspect that the problem might have something to do with the weather. My a/c broke down, so it was 88 in my house when I got home. It seems to have started making ice again early in the morning when the temperature was down. If that's the case, then I can deal with it. But there's still that flapping sound. In the meantime, I bought another ice maker from a different manufacturer ... for emergencies. It makes bullet ice, and I hate that! But it's better than no ice at all.

      I also give it about an 8 but I found it varies depending on the water you use. If you use steam distilled water as we typically do, the ice comes out a little less soft than if you use something with more minerals in it like drinking or tap water. We use steam distilled to keep the Opal cleaner but I actually think drinking water that has some minerals makes ice a little closer to Sonic.

      We always turn ours off after it makes full batch of ice. However if you make full batch of ice and then keep the machine on idle, it should turn back on once it detects water below. At this point it will take that water and turn it back into ice and continue this process until you turn it off. We love it!
