I finally bought this exact model after months of debating if it was worth the price or now. I found it on sale at Best Buy so I bought it and absolutely love it. We always have a drink poured with ice now. Definitely worth the money. I did have to clean it once, it was making odd noises and cleaning it seemed to fix that. We started buying spring water to use in it hoping that it stays cleaner than using our well water.
I tend to just use a cheap pitcher with a filter to it, so I can filter the water first to keep it from building up lime (I'm on a well, so I get some pretty bad hard water deposits). Filters are way cheaper, and they do just as well as bottled water.
If you are going to get this machine, GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. I've gone through 3 of these in the last few years. There are all kinds of problems they have - luckily many have made videos on how to solve them (squeal, pump priming etc). We decided after the last one broke (again - this time, it shoots out grey plastic chunks in the ice, which for some reason they won't cover under the warranty), to try a different (cheaper) brand that we eventually can hook to a waterline. Its a crownful, and the ice is identical to this.
Have you looked into an under the counter ice maker? That might be my next step if this one ever breaks. So far so good tho and it’s almost been a year
I think you’re better off getting a $200 Vividmoo or one of the other brands that appears to be exactly the same. I love mine. It seems to have the same ice making capacity and isn’t as large and the cleaning looks easier because it has a nice open design with the lid off.
Love mine. I'd recommend to anyone interested in buying one, get the extended warranty. I've had many ice machines and trust me, you'll need an extended warranty if you need to replace it.
I just bought one for my husband as an early Xmas gift. Our Samsung ice maker has been a PITA since we got it. So we can not stop having to do the defrost cycle every other day. He can also stop buying bags of ice that take up much needed freezer space!
Thank you for the video, I just ordered this ice maker online after I saw your video and others. You covered some key points that I needed for my decision, now I will pick it up later on today.
My Brand new Opal 2.0 in the first batch had metal shavings in it, had one in my mouth with the first mouthful of ice. So far after about 6 batches of ice, I let it all melt into a large white bowl and i find metal flakes in the bottom. I also found larger metal fragments in the bottom of the water reservoir. What makes me angrier is I have posted a very objectionable review with no biasing or drama on GE's website and they take it down every time citing it does not meet their guidelines which are, 1. Keep your review focused on the product. (It was all about the product). 2. Avoid writing about customer service (nothing about customer service), 3. Refrain from mentioning competitors or the specific price you paid for the product. (None of this was mentioned). 4. Do not include any personally identifiable information, such as full names. (There was none). GE is censoring me from getting this out there because they know it will cause a shit storm. Please spread the word and check your ice and the bottom of the ice maker.
@@miasayles5940 GE's website. Took 3 units until I got the one I was satisfied with. Second had metal, not as much as the first one plus had a very loose part in that back of the reservoir that supports the ice bin. The third unit was issue free. We would have asked for a refund after the first unit, but when GE pulled my reviews I was determined to milk them for all they had until I was satisfied. Happy so far.
@@michaelgilmore341 if GE isn’t willing to take a $600 loss with refunding you then I absolutely don’t want their business, thank you for warning me against this loser company
Got my wife one for Christmas. She misses the ice makers at work (that made sonic style ice). We are permanent work from home now so it was worth it to me and I haven’t even opened it 😂
Haha. Ya I bet a lot of people are buying things they normally wouldn’t but sense you are at home more, it only makes sense to make your home the best you can.
Loved ours for two years. But alas, our Opal (not "Optal") eventually ran into the SAME issues I've seen reported all over. From the whing/screeching sound to reduced ice to absolutely no ice at all being made. We also experienced the make ice/go into "defrost mode" forever issue. In the last year we've had so many problems with this unit that I'm really thinking about going with a totally different brand. Two years for a $600 unit isn't the greatest value, in my opinion -- especially for an ice maker. I have no complaints about it... other than the common issues people eventually experience with it (resulting in a unit that has to be returned, fixed, or tossed -- and their warranty blows, so don't expect to have anything to go wrong within that SHORT warranty window).
Step-daughter bought mom a fridgidaire model ice maker. It worked great the first year maybe even the 2nd year ... this year when summer came it struggles to make good solid ice cubes. We have to make ice and then transfer them to the freezer to keep the ice around. It was relatively cheap and I like to get cheap first off to see if I'm going to use the product/appliance. The wife loves her ice so when I get the next one I think I'm going to go this route.
The amazon one works about a year. Make sure you get a warranty for 2 or more years. You will loose $125 id you send it back, they wont be able to fix it and they keep the bad one to boot. Not sure the UV light in the cleaning cycle even works. You may be able to oil the motor and gearbox but the auger may bind up. I kept up with the cleaning. I used RO filtered water for the source.
I’m on my second one and I’m done with it we love the ice but it’s to much hassle we bought the second one because the first one quit making ice on and off for like 6 months so we bought another one a year later something stop making ice only when it wants to make ice I’ve cleaned it had a person look at it. It’s not reliable and to much money for it not to last long. But we love that type of ice
I had to laugh out loud at the comment about the Samsung ice maker not working. That's the EXACT reason I'm watching your video before buying an ice maker. I appreciate the video. I'll be buying this nugget ice maker.
Being that I am working off a loan and everything, I forgo buying a $500 nugget ice maker and bought this for $22 instead ;) Brigii Ice Cube Tray with Lid&Bin, Ice Cube Mold with 56 Cubes, Stackable Ice Trays for Freezer with Easy-Release Silicone Bottom
Watched the whole thing, thank you! QUESTION... can you use it without the side water thing? Like is there a reservoir below that you can fill and just use that side tank when you need it?
I appreciate everything I used to follow you religiously but I've been so busy trying to make money not to loose my house but I recently have had more time so yeah anyway thanks for everything keep it going !
GE Needs to make a Cafe version of the Opal 2.0 in Matte White with Copper Accents as optional (or something like their other countertop appliances). Charge ~$800 for it (since it is the Cafe version of the GE Profile), and upgrade the overall finishes and some of the cheaper feeling components on it. I would only use 5 stage reverse osmosis filtered water to fill this baby.
I would consider installing a reverse osmosis system with this ice maker and it would increase longevity and save costs in the long run compared to other options.
Awesome video. I just got a different brand nugget ice maker and the nuggets come out wet. Like if I want completely dry ice, I would have to strain a little bit of water off of the ice. This happens if the ice is very fresh or has been there a while. Does yours get like that? I may have to buy this one.
I’d recommend a rubber dog bowl mat with a lip for a small dog that the entire footprint of the machine would fit onto if you dislike the plastic tray in the front.
Overall I enjoyed the machine and I owned both the first and second version. However, after almost two years I started having issues and managed to break it by sticking a tube cleaner too far into the machine. Do yourself a favor and get a protection plan. It does not official support a water line which is a huge disadvantage. I found a much cheaper machine from NewAir that I am going to be getting next week since it was about $250 cheaper including the protection plan and it has a waterline inlet so I'm planning to get an inline filter that you only have to change once a year.
@@linzann1 I've had it for a few weeks now and it's way better imo! Hooked it up to a filtered water line and never filled it up with water once! If you have a fridge with an existing water line and get a filter kit a lot of them have a spliter. Save the money and get the other one.

Just return it for a new one is probably the easiest solution. Do you have the plastic tubes on the back properly hooked up so they don’t leak? That is the only source I can think of
