Water, reflections, and contrasting forms are the focus of this demonstration. Roger paints on location starting with large basic shapes and refining them as he goes. Since acrylics dry quickly, the layering and glazing process is made easy in the field unlike oils which take time to dry between coats. Sarah tours the artistic town and watches the dragon boat races being held in the harbor.

Thanks for all the videos. As an artist myself (mostly acrylic) I have learned so much from your videos. Most importantly, the tip about covering the whole canvas prior to putting in any details has really enhanced my painting technique. On a different note, being an avid outdoorsman, this painting appears to be of a beaver lodge instead of a dam. Dams typically are on streams, and although they can be utilized as living quarters, lodges are those shelters built on open water such as lakes and ponds. Keep those videos coming. Your art is highly inspirational!

I really appreciate all of your explanations as you paint, I always learn a thing or two. These videos are lots of fun with Sarah’s tours setting up the location, interesting scenes and local information. Thank you both for sharing this!

Great combo of painting and travel. That town in far NE Minnesota is so pristine, clean air and water, and a place for healthy exercise in those boat races. I saw this episode one time on Create, glad to be able to view it again. Yes, that's a beaver lodge, not a damn, but makes a wonderful subject. Great videography.

This was kind of special to me. I live not far from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The city was named for an old beaver dam located in a stream flowing into Beaver Dam River. It has a fair amount of history tied to it as well. It goes back to around 1840. Love the demo as always, Roger.

Thanks Tony. As someone pointed out long after we made this program that what I painted isn't actually a beaver dam but rather a beaver lodge. I really haven't thought about it but they were right. Glad you enjoyed the program.

    That's a beaver lodge, not a dam.

Yep, it's a lodge not a dam. Must be from back east!

You're absolutely right. I hadn't really even thought about it at the time I painted and it just came naturally to me to say that it was a Beaver Dam. Glad you pointed it out, but of course it's too late to change anything on that video now.
