  • So, you want to hit the road, and take your art supplies with you. If you’re traveling my air, you might find this trickier than you’d think. In this video I go into some of the various things you should know before you take your art supplies to the airport. We want to avoid having the TSA confiscate our precious supplies (not to mention expensive). So let’s talk about what to pack, what to carry on, and what to leave at home.

    Oil painting on an airplane? Lol that’s crazy! You don’t have enough room to “beat the devil out of it”

    Hey Mikey! Excellent video! As you know, I travel all over the country painting weddings, and I've given a lot of thought to this subject. All of your tips are very good. In addition to the MSDSLSD safety sheet, (which I have printed and laminated and leave in all my suitcases), I have also printed off the document from the FAA website reminding the gorillas in the basement of their own stated policies. In addition to that I include one handwritten, amateur-looking note Where I beg the gorillas to have mercy on me! (and in which I try to describe that bit about - ITS VEGETABLE OIL!)

      GREAT idea about having laminated info sheets to show people their own policy. I used to regularly visit federal facilities, and never got the same response twice about "their" rules (like I'd turn around and leave after driving 500 miles). Nothing like educating them in public to cut through the hassles and red tape.

    Great tips. I've travel with lots of supplies including brushes, lots of watercolor paint and tubes and have never had a problem. I've done it in road trips and airplanes, last time I went to South Korea and even stopped in Shanghai, China with my carry one full of watercolor (paint, tubes and pans), inks, brushes (regular and waterbrushes), blocks and paper, even dip pens and it was all good and no problems. Kept me super distracted during my 13 hour lay over in Shanghai and then on my 16 hour layover in JFK though! Plus on the way back after hitting art stores in Korea and Japan I had way much more then on the way there. Also, still no problems. Great video as always including the puns with those water bags/containers!

    I've found that if I want certain paint supplies on a trip, instead of taking them on the plane with me, I box them up and mail them to the hotel with a note on the box to hold for arrival on the day I plan to arrive with my name on the package. Then I contact the hotel and let them know I am shipping a package to the hotel. Upon my return home, I do the same thing, I ship it out from the hotel with a prepaid shipping label for the post office to pick up from the hotel. Makes life so much easier than fighting with TSA rules.

    Since my travel is usually going home for Christmas, I just buy my niece paint as her Christmas present and use that while I'm there.

    I’ve traveled with brushes and palette knives in my carry on many times and have never had an issue. If you have any concerns, plastic palette knives should be fine.

    I travel several times a year with small size (00 to 4) short handle Kolinsky sable brushes in my carryon backpack. I prefer to pack the majority of my supplies, but I don't trust TSA or the general rigours of baggage handling with hundreds of dollars worth of brushes I need to do the job I'm traveling for. TSA agents have never even asked to open the brush box or tube to look at them closer. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but I don't think the smaller ferrules are big enough to cause concern. (I have had other weird art things examined for sure!)

    Is the regulation 3oz in total for liquids, or 3oz per each container? Could you travel with multiple 3oz containers? Thanks!

    • @kate7557
      @kate7557 5 років тому +2

      3.4oz (100ml) max per container. all must fit in a quart sized bag in your cary on. no such restrictions on checked bags though. www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/liquids-rule

      Spend some time watching the many, many travel hack you tube videos. The liquids rule will apply whether it's toiletries or liquid art art supplies.

    Art treehouse bio based thinner
    > 217° f . They have other safe products as well. Spike lavender, Canada balsam etc. Not advertising just a heads up to the non toxic painters out there.

    I had a small, round-tipped pair of scissors taken away.
    I had empty small spray bottles. Traveled with water soluble colored pencils. Don't try to carry exacto knives, razor blades. Watch travel hack videos. Check bag if concerned. I didn't have a problem with brushes, they were short. Or, take water-fillable brushes.
